    El Niño–Southern Oscillation dynamics affect global weather patterns, with regionally diverse hydrological responses posing critical societal challenges. The lack of seasonally resolved hydrological proxy reconstructions beyond the observational era limits our understanding of boundary conditions that drive and/or adjust El Niño–Southern Oscillation variability. Detailed reconstructions of past El Niño–Southern Oscillation dynamics can help modelling efforts, highlight impacts on disparate ecosystems and link to extreme events that affect populations from the tropics to high latitudes. Here, mid-Holocene El Niño–Southern Oscillation and hydrological changes are reconstructed in the south-west Pacific using a stalagmite from Niue Island, which represents the period 6.4–5.4 ka BP. Stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios, trace elements and greyscale data from a U/Th-dated and layer counted stalagmite profile are combined to infer changes in local hydrology at sub-annual to multi-decadal timescales. Principal component analysis reveals seasonal-scale hydrological changes expressed as variations in stalagmite growth patterns and geochemical characteristics. Higher levels of host rock-derived elements (Sr/Ca and U/Ca) and higher δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C values are observed in dark, dense calcite laminae deposited during the dry season, whereas during the wet season, higher concentrations of soil-derived elements (Zn/Ca and Mn/Ca) and lower δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C values are recorded in pale, porous calcite laminae. The multi-proxy record from Niue shows seasonal cycles associated with hydrological changes controlled by the positioning and strength of the South Pacific Convergence Zone. Wavelet analysis of the greyscale record reveals that El Niño–Southern Oscillation was continuously active during the mid-Holocene, with two weaker intervals at 6–5.9 and 5.6–5.5 ka BP. El Niño–Southern Oscillation especially affects dry season rainfall dynamics, with increased cyclone activity that reduces hydrological seasonality during El Niño years. We have developed a device for digitizing coins using photometric stereo, which serves two purposes. For inventory it allows identifying a coin, which has been digitized before, and avoids mixing up similar coins. This is important because the classic marking directly on the object is not possible without obscuring the design. Secondly, one can view a digitized coin on screen and interactively change the light direction similar to Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI). This enables researchers to better recognize details, especially in the case of often corroded coin finds, and also enables location independent investigations and exchanges. The digitization result consists of color (albedo) and normal information for each pixel, which allows to analyze topographic properties apart from color. We think that this type of data can enable the development of new algorithmic analysis methods. The classification of coins, especially medieval coins, requires specialist knowledge and a great deal of experience. Digital support can help archaeologists without numismatic knowledge to classify coins correctly by providing initial clues and showing, which coins in a comparative data base show similarities with a newly found coin. For the development of such digital tools, we provide a selection of coin data as an open dataset. For the dataset we have selected samples of medieval coins from three different types, which are described in Mehl 499, 595 and Bahrfeldt 19. The dataset contains 2D and 3D data only for their obverses. A possible research direction could be to measure similarity between these samples, such that samples of the same type are more similar than samples of different type. Many samples show only a part of a complete coin. This increases the challenge e.g. for shape correspondence. Multi-scale integral invariant (MSII) features included with the 3D data may help to focus on minting features.

    Correct identification and correction of contradictions and inconsistencies within financial reports constitute a fundamental component of the audit process. To streamline and automate this critical task, we introduce a novel approach leveraging large language models and an embedding-based paragraph clustering methodology. This paper assesses our approach across three distinct datasets, including two annotated datasets and one unannotated dataset, all within a zero-shot framework. Our findings reveal highly promising results that significantly enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the auditing process, ultimately reducing the time required for a thorough and reliable financial report audit.

    This paper addresses the classification of Arabic text data in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on Natural Language Inference (NLI) and Contradiction Detection (CD). Arabic is considered a resource-poor language, meaning that there are few data sets available, which leads to limited availability of NLP methods. To overcome this limitation, we create a dedicated data set from publicly available resources. Subsequently, transformer-based machine learning models are being trained and evaluated. We find that a language-specific model (AraBERT) performs competitively with state-of-the-art multilingual approaches, when we apply linguistically informed pre-training methods such as Named Entity Recognition (NER). To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale evaluation for this task in Arabic, as well as the first application of multi-task pre-training in this context. submitted to IEEE SSCI 2023

    Abstract Conventional interior insulation systems protect the wall from condensation in winter by the help of vapor barriers or vapor retarding insulation materials. However, these solutions also reduce the drying potential of the walls towards the inside. This can be a disadvantage if wetting from the outside due to rain or other influences takes place and the drying potential to the outside is not sufficient. In such cases, so called capillary active materials can be an alternative, because they provide additional drying potential to the inside in summer thanks to a rather low vapor diffusion resistance. In winter they work without vapor retarders because they can store and wick water away from the condensation plane back towards the interior by capillary action. In practice, there are currently many different materials under the label "capillary active" with a correspondingly wide range in terms of moisture storage, liquid transport and vapor diffusion resistance and it is difficult to decide, whether material is suitable for an application or not. There is still missing a common definition of the performance of such materials. While for most other materials already simplified design and application rules for the application as interior insulation are available, capillary active interior insulation materials still require an individual design, normally by the help of hygrothermal simulation. In order to simplify also their practice application, a classification of the moisture performance of capillary active interior insulation, considering the influencing parameters of relevance on the moisture level at the critical interface between wall and interior insulation was developed. On this basis, also a simplified verification process as well as design rules for the main practical application fields become possible, which allows designers to choose an appropriate system for the specific situation.

    Abstract In electrical grids with high renewable percentage, the production is less demand-driven, but more dependent on weather conditions. Usually there are periodical weather patterns in the winter period with substantial amounts of wind energy production. Sometimes this results in a shut-off of the wind turbines due to the inability of the grid to use the produced power (overproduction). This paper assesses two thermal storage systems to service space heating and domestic hot water that exploit the overproduction of electricity and thereby bridge periods of lower electricity production. The first system utilizes inner walls and ceilings with a thermally activated building system (TABS) to store and dissipate heat. The second system is a stand-alone high temperature stone storage system (HTSS). Models to simulate such systems within a whole building simulation framework are introduced and the verification with measured data from field measurements is presented. Both models are used to assess the systems with regard to the speed of loading and the potential to bridge time periods without additional heating in high-performance buildings. It is shown that both systems can provide heating and domestic hot water (DHW) up to 13 days without substantial additional electricity.

    Background: Biomedical knowledge graphs (KG) have become crucial for describing biological findings in a structured manner. To keep up with the constantly changing flow of knowledge, their embedded information must be regularly updated with the latest findings. Natural language processing (NLP) has created new possibilities for automating this upkeep by facilitating information extraction from free text. However, due to annotated and labeled biomedical data limitations, the development of completely autonomous information extraction systems remains a substantial scientific and technological hurdle. This study aims to explore methodologies best suited to support the automatic extraction of causal relationships from biomedical literature with the aim of regular and rapid updating of disease-specific pathophysiology mechanism KGs. Methods: Our proposed approach first searches and retrieves PubMed abstracts using the desired terms and keywords. The extension corpora are then passed through the NLP pipeline for automatic information extraction. We then identify triples representing cause-and-effect relationships and encode this content using the Biological Expression Language (BEL). Finally, domain experts perform an analysis of the completeness, relevance, accuracy, and novelty of the extracted triples. Results: In our test scenario, which is focused on the KG regarding the phosphorylation of the Tau protein, our pipeline successfully contributed novel data, which was then subsequently used to update the KG leading to the identification of six additional upstream regulators of Tau phosphorylation. Conclusion: Here, it is demonstrated that the NLP-based workflow we created is capable of rapidly updating pathophysiology mechanism graphs. As a result, production-scale, semi-automated updating of pre-existing, curated mechanism graphs is enabled.

    In this paper, we present the results of a Europe-wide survey on the implementation of CoE Recommendation R (2000)13 on a European policy on access to archives conducted in October 2022 on behalf of the Council of Europe (CoE). It shows that overall great progress has been made in improving access to their public Archives. It also shows that there are still deficits in some instances, for example in the availability of finding aids for classified holdings or in the granting of access corrections for otherwise inaccessible archive holdings. We also highlight several challenges to the accessibility of archives, many of which are related to the ongoing process of digitalization. On the one hand, there is the growing expectation of users that collections be digitized and made accessible online, while at the same time the available resources of the Archives remain scarce. Finally, digitalization and the adoption of the GDPR also exacerbate the tension between data protection and freedom of information - often at the detriment of accessibility.

    ABSTRACTOoids are abundant carbonate grains throughout much of Earth's history, but their formation is not well understood. Here, an in‐depth study of microbial bioerosion features of Holocene ooids from the Schooner Cays ooid shoals (Great Bahama Bank, Eleuthera, Bahamas) and the Shalil al Ud ooid shoals in the Arabian/Persian Gulf (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) is presented. No obvious differences were found in ooid size distribution, cortex layer thickness, the composition of nuclei or euendolithic community when comparing ooids from both locations. Microendolithic borings are present in most studied ooid surfaces, but the intensity of (micro‐)bioerosion varies significantly. Applying an epoxy vacuum cast‐embedding technique allowed the identification of ichnotaxa and their inferred producers (various genera of diatoms, cyanobacteria, coccolithophores and unspecified bacteria). Euendolithic taxa have specific low‐light tolerances and light optima. This implies that information about the relative bathymetry (seafloor versus burial within an ooid shoal) and ecology for ooid cortex formation can be obtained via the presence or absence of their respective ichnotaxa. The history of a statistically significant number of ooid cortices can be translated into dune dynamics and the temporal variations thereof by allocating the inferred index producer to a defined burial or light penetration zone. In this context, ooid formation can be divided into four stages: (i) an agitation stage in the water column, characterized by the colonization of grains by photoautotrophs; (ii) a resting stage, characterized by temporary burial of the ooid, leading to immobilization and a shift towards heterotrophs; (iii) a sleeping stage, characterized by prolonged burial and colonization by organotrophs; and (iv) a reactivation stage, characterized by a resurfacing of the ooid and a subsequent shift towards photoautotrophs. The sleeping stage is presumably a stage of ooid degradation where bioerosion, mainly by heterotrophic fungi and bacteria is particularly active.

    Authors: Wolfgang Koch;

    Multiple sensor data fusion and adaptive sensor resources management are key technologies for realizing modern aerospace and electronic systems, researched by the information fusion community. In October 2023, on the 20th anniversary of the death of Günter van Keuk, one of its pioneers, we recall aspects of the early history of this branch of applied computer science in the German defense domain. In 2023 also the Fraunhofer Institute for Communications, Information Processing, and Ergonomics (FKIE) looks back on 60 years of one of its roots, the Research Institute for Radio and Mathematics (FFM), van Keuk's scientific home, as well as on 60 years of target tracking in Germany, which has led to FFM's foundation in 1963.

    Authors: Wolfgang Koch;
