    Udbina – Gradina is the only site from the Late Middle Ages (15th century) to the Post-Medieval Period (16th–17th century) with a considerable amount of archaeobotanical remains analysed so far in Croatia. A significant quantity of large-grain cereals was found onsite, the most dominant of which was free-threshing wheat (Triticum aestivum group), as well as a smaller quantity of weed admixtures. We present an overview of the carpological results of the thus far researched and published medieval and post-medieval sites in Croatia and provide a comparison with the newly researched site of Udbina – Gradina. Udbina – Gradina je jedini lokalitet iz razdoblja kasnog srednjeg (15. stoljeće) – novog vijeka (16. – 17. stoljeće) s većom količinom arheobotaničkih ostataka do sada analiziran na području hrvatske. na lokalitetu je nađena veća količina krupnozrnih žitarica u čijem sastavu je najdominantnija nepljevičasta pšenica (Triticum aestivum grupa) te manja količina korovnih primjesa. napravljen je pregled karpoloških rezultata do sada istraženih i objavljenih srednjo- i novovjekovnih lokaliteta na području hrvatske te usporedba s novoistraženim lokalitetom udbinske Gradine.

    Authors: Marin Matković;

    The article discusses 36 clay pipes unearthed during archeological excavations at five sites in Osijek: Tvrđa – Courtyard of the Franciscan monastery (2012), Tvrđa – Imperial gates (2016), Tvrđa – Eastern entrance (2017), Osijek – Vukovarska 192 (2014), and Osijek – Queen Katarina Kosača Park (2015–2016). The first three are post-medieval sites in Tvrđa, while the last two are in the Downtown, where a postmedieval settlement emerged on the remains of Roman Mursa after the end of Ottoman rule. Most of the pipes are of Ottoman type and style (17th–19th century). The two most numerous groups from the 17th and part of the 18th century with apparent distribution patterns stand out. The pipes from the first group are characteristic in the area that more or less coincides with the territory of royal Hungary while finds from the second group have parallels at numerous sites in southeastern and partly central Europe but primarily in the area that was under Ottoman rule. Finds of Hungarian (18th–19th century) and Austrian types (19th century) are present in a smaller number. Among them there are pipes with master or workshop marks, often from major production centers. U članku je obrađeno 36 keramičkih lula koje su pronađene prilikom arheoloških istraživanja na pet pozicija u gradu Osijeku: Tvrđa – Dvorište franjevačkoga samostana (2012.), Tvrđa – Carska vrata (2016.), Tvrđa – Istočni ulaz (2017.), Osijek – Vukovarska 192 (2014.) i Osijek – Park kraljice Katarine Kosače (2015. – 2016.). U prva tri slučaja riječ je o novovjekovnim lokalitetima u Tvrđi, dok su zadnja dva u Donjem gradu, gdje se na mjestu nekadašnje rimske Murse razvilo novovjekovno naselje nakon nestanka osmanske vlasti. Lule su većinom osmanskoga tipa i stila (17. – 19. st.) od kojih se brojnošću ističu dvije grupe iz 17. i dijela 18. st., s jasnim obrascem rasprostiranja. Lule prve grupe karakteristične su na području koje manje ili više odgovara prostoru Ugarske, dok primjerci druge grupe pronalaze analogije na brojnim lokalitetima jugoistočne, dijelom i srednje Europe, no prvenstveno na prostoru koji je bio pod osmanskom vlašću. Nešto manje lula je ugarskoga (18. – 19. st.) i austrijskoga tipa (19. st.) među kojima su i primjerci s majstorskim ili radioničkim oznakama, često iz većih proizvodnih središta.

    Authors: Katarina Šprem;

    Istarski poluotok bogat je mineralnim sirovinama, ponajprije karbonatnim i silicijskim sedimentnim stijenama koje su na ovom području neraskidivo povezane procesom koji se naziva silicifikacija. Silicijske sedimentne stijene (rožnjaci) zbog svoje su tvrdoće i školjkastog loma vrlo pogodne za izradu oruđa lomljenjem ili cijepanjem, stoga je znanje o ležištima ove vrste stijena bilo vrlo važno za prapovijesne zajednice u Istri. U ovom radu iznijet ćemo osnovne podatke o primarnim i sekundarnim ležištima rožnjaka na području hrvatskog dijela Istarskog poluotoka, vizualne i mehaničke karakteristike sakupljenih uzoraka, kao i mikropetrografske karakteristike određene pomoću binokularnog polarizacijskog mikroskopa. Iznijet ćemo podatke o geološkoj starosti stijene domaćina u kojima su zabilježeni rožnjaci. Spomenut ćemo terminološku problematiku u arheološkoj literaturi te postaviti pitanje istraživanja provenijencije istarskog rožnjaka, odnosno mogućnost raspoznavanja sirovine s različitih ležišta na poluotoku. Spomenut ćemo i arheološka nalazišta na kojima je zabilježena prisutnost istarske sirovine. Na nekim ležištima rožnjaka pronađene su i izrađevine, odnosno jezgre koje su služile za proizvodnju odbojaka ili sječiva, a koje su također dokumentirane. The Istrian Peninsula is rich in mineral resources, primarily carbonate and siliceous sedimentary rocks, which are inextricably linked by a process called silicification. Due to their hardness and conchoidal fracture, siliceous sedimentary rocks (cherts) are very suitable for knapping tools, therefore the knowledge about the location of chert deposits was very important for prehistoric communities in Istria. In this paper, we will present basic data on primary and secondary chert deposits in the Croatian part of the Istrian Peninsula, visual and mechanical characteristics of the collected samples, as well as micropetrographic characteristics determined using a binocular polarizing microscope. We will present data on the geological age of the host rock in which cherts were recorded. We will mention the terminological issues in the archaeological literature and raise the issue of research into the provenance of Istrian chert, that is, the possibility of identifying the raw material from different deposits on the Peninsula. We will also mention the archaeological sites where the presence of Istrian raw materials was recorded. Artifacts and cores used to knap flakes and blades were also found and recorded on some of the surveyedchert deposits.

    U radu su analizirani biljni makroostaci na glinenim ulomcima s organskim primjesama s nalazišta Nadin – Gradina u sjevernoj Dalmaciji. Ulomci keramičke posude većih dimenzija skladišne namjene potječu iz jednog zatvorenog naseobinskog konteksta (SJ 419) datiranog radiokarbonskom metodom u razdoblje starijeg željeznog doba, odnosno u vremenski okvir posljednje četvrtine 9. st. pr. Kr. do sredine 8. st. pr. Kr. Organske primjese korištene su od najranijh vremena u smjesi za izradu keramike kako bi se utjecalo na svojstva konačnog keramičkog produkta. Takvi sušeni ili pečeni keramički predmeti sadrže tragove korištenja biljnih primjesa u vidu otisaka i biljnih ostataka. Identificirani biljni ostaci većim dijelom potječu od ostataka vršidbe žitarica: pšeno, stabljike i listovi te pljeve i ostaci klasa. Na temelju analize otisaka i ostataka biljnih primjesa bilo je moguće determinirati krupnozrne žitarice: ječam (Hordeum sp.) i pšenicu (Triticum sp.) te sitnozrne: proso/muhar (Panicum/Setaria sp.). Od ostalih nalaza pronađeni su tragovi masline (Olea europaea) i drijena (cf. Cornus mas) te skupine trava (Poaceae). Otisci i ostaci biljnih primjesa u keramici često ostaju nezamijećeni, iako predstavljaju vrijednu dopunu klasičnoj analizi biljnih makrofosila, a time i dodatne podatke o gospodarskim strategijama i okolišu zajednice koja je keramiku proizvela.

    U Zemaljskome muzeju Bosne i Hercegovine, u Franjevačkome samostanu u Tolisi, zatim muzeju u Doboju, Muzeju Hercegovine u Mostaru kao i drugim muzejskim ustanovama, između mnogobrojnih nalaza, čuva se i određeni broj predmeta koji se mogu uvrstiti u širu skupinu predmeta koji pripadaju pojasnim garniturama, okovima, falerama, dugmadima, pojasnim jezičcima, privjescima, vrhu korice mača te dijelovima kacige. Ovi predmeti u najvećoj mjeri pripadaju dijelu vojničke opreme za remenje, pojaseve, zatim kao dio konjske opreme, cipela, oklopa i drugih dijelova. Navedeni predmeti služili su u praktične svrhe, ali i kao dio dekorativnoga sadržaja. U nekim slučajevima pojedine forme su u odnosu na interpretaciju mogle imati i apotropejsko i profilaktičko značenje. S obzirom na široki spektar predmeta koji su obrađeni, i datacijski okvir je razmjerno širi te se kreće od 1. stoljeća pa do razdoblja kasne antike. Among the many artefacts held by the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Franciscan monastery in Tolisa, the museum in Doboj, the Museum of Herzegovina in Mostar and other museums, are a number that form a diverse group including belt sets, belt plates, phalerae, buttons, strap-ends, pendants, the tips of scabbards and helmet parts. Most of these are belonged to military straps and belts, or to horse harness, shoes, armour etc., and were both practical and decorative. Some examples could be interpreted as apotropaic and prophylactic in nature. This broadly defined group also covers a wide range of dates, from the 1st century to late Antiquity.

    Authors: Antonela Barbir; Zlatko Perhoč; Krunoslav Zubčić; Ivor Karavanić;

    Kaštel Štafilić – Resnik is the first underwater Paleolithic site in Croatia to be systematically investigated. The site is located in the Kaštela Bay in central Dalmatia which, like the rest of the Adriatic Basin, has undergone geomorphological changes caused, among other factors, by marine transgression. Sea level rise at the Pleistocene to Holocene transition destructively affected the Pleistocene strata and caused the submergence of the site. The lithic finds are typologically placed in the Mousterian culture, with the exception of a few finds belonging to the Upper Paleolithic. The paper presents the results of technological and typological analysis of findings collected by I. Svilan in Kaštela Bay and, for the first time, raw material analysis of lithic finds from systematic research but also from the collection of I. Svilan, which confirm that Neanderthals occupied Kaštela Bay during the Middle Paleolithic. Kaštel Štafilić – Resnik prvi je sustavno istraživan podvodni paleolitički lokalitet u Hrvatskoj. Lokalitet je smješten u Kaštelanskom zaljevu u srednjoj Dalmaciji koja je, kao i cijeli jadranski bazen, prošla kroz geomorfološke promjene uzrokovane, među ostalim i marinskom transgresijom. Podizanje razine mora na prijelazu iz pleistocena u holocen utjecalo je na destrukciju pleistocenskih slojeva i potapanje lokaliteta. Nalazi su tipološki smješteni u mustjersku kulturu, uz iznimku nekolicine nalaza koji pripadaju gornjem paleolitiku. U radu su predstavljeni rezultati tehnološke i tipološke analize nalaza koje je prikupio I. Svilan u Kaštelanskom zaljevu i, po prvi puta, sirovinske analize litičkih nalaza iz sustavnih istraživanja, ali i iz zbirke I. Svilana, koji potvrđuju Kaštelanski zaljev kao mjesto boravka neandertalaca u srednjem paleolitiku.

    Authors: Nikšić, Petra;

    U radu su predstavljeni i analizirani kasnoantički glazirani tarionici s lokaliteta Josipovac – Verušed kraj Osijeka i Lobor – Majka Božja Gorska u Hrvatskome zagorju, a uz njih i drugi tarionici pronađeni u Verušedu. Antičko i kasnoantičko ruralno naselje u Verušedu, prema dosadašnjim spoznajama temeljenima na pronađenome pokretnom materijalu, posebno metalnim predmetima, pokazuje vremenski okvir života od 2. do najkasnije početka 5. stoljeća. S druge strane, lokalitet u Loboru, zahvaljujući više izoliranom i refugijalnom karakteru svoga položaja u nestabilnim vremenima kasne antike, nastavio je egzistirati i u 6. stoljeću. Prosperitet je obilježila izgradnja, održavanje i obnova značajnoga crkvenog kompleksa koji je bio središte kasnoantičkoga visinskog naselja u čijem su kontekstu pronađeni ulomci glaziranih tarionika. S obzirom na različitosti između ta dva lokaliteta, izdvojeni su uzorci kasnoantičkih glaziranih tarionika kako bi se utvrdio stupanj sličnosti proizvodnje, distribucije i korištenja toga tipa glaziranoga posuđa. Ulomci tarionika su tipološki i kronološki analizirani, a obrađene su i druge osnovne karakteristike kasnoantičkih glaziranih tarionika, poput dimenzija, granulata, premaza, glazure i ukrasa. Glazirani tarionici s lokaliteta Josipovac – Verušed i Lobor – Majka Božja Gorska uspoređeni su međusobno, kao i s dostupnim podacima o glaziranim tarionicima s drugih istovremenih lokaliteta. This paper presents and analyzes late antique glazed mortars from the sites Josipovac – Verušed near Osijek and Lobor – Our Lady of the Mountain in Hrvatsko Zagorje, as well as non-glazed mortars found in Verušed. Previous research on small finds, especially metal objects, confirms that the antique and late antique rural settlement in Verušed was inhabited from the 2nd to the beginning of the 5th century at the latest. On the other hand, the site in Lobor, due to its isolated geographic position in the unstable times of Late Antiquity, survived into the 6th century, its prosperity marked by the construction, maintenance, and restoration of a significant church complex that was the center of the late antique hillfort in the context of which the fragments of glazed mortars were found. Considering the differences between these two sites, samples of late antique glazed mortars were chosen in order to determine the degree of similarity and difference in the production, distribution, and use of this type of glazed pottery. Mortar fragments are typologically and chronologically analyzed, with a discussion of other basic characteristics of late antique glazed mortars, such as measurements, grit, slip, glaze, and decorations. Glazed mortars from Josipovac – Verušed and Lobor – Our Lady of the Mountain are compared with each other and with the available data on glazed mortars from other similar sites.

    Authors: Marijan, Mia;

    Within the project ‘Mapping, Documenting, and Surveying the Archaeological Sites on the Island of Šćedro’, conducted in the summers of 2018 and 2019, many stone mounds were discovered on the island of Šćedro that had not been recorded in previous expert and amateur archaeological research. The field survey and remote (aerial) sensing documented circular, oval, and elongated bulk cairns, in addition to modern dry-stone walls. A review of satellite images from the State Geodetic Administration from 1968 and new aerial records observed the influence of vegetation on the (reduced) visibility of the archaeological formations from the air. In particular, the study of the circular cairns identified patterns in the selection of stone material and the position for their erection. Based on their characteristics, their location in the landscape, and similar structures already researched in the region, we assume that they are of an archaeological character, probably prehistoric burial mounds, whose presence on the island of Šćedro may indicate a marked intensity of use of the island in the past. However, the character and time of construction of each mound should be confirmed and clearly defined by expert archaeological excavations. U sklopu projekta „Mapiranje, dokumentiranje i pregled arheoloških lokaliteta otoka Šćedra“, provedenoga u ljeto 2018. i 2019. godine, otkriven je izrazito veliki broj kamenih gomila na otoku Šćedru koje nisu bile ustanovljene u dosadašnjim stručnim i amaterskim arheološkim istraživanjima otoka. Terenskim su pregledom i zračnim istraživanjem, pored suvremenih suhozida, dokumentirane kružne, ovalne i izdužene rasute kamene gomile. Na osnovi pregleda satelitskih snimki Državne geodetske uprave iz 1968. i novih zračnih snimki, uočava se utjecaj vegetacije na (smanjenu) vidljivost takvih tvorevina iz zraka. Proučavanjem posebice kružnih gomila utvrđeno je postojanje obrazaca pri odabiru kamenoga materijala i položaja za njihovo podizanje. Temeljem njihovih karakteristika, smještaja u krajoliku i već istraženih sličnih struktura toga prostora, pretpostavljamo da su arheološkoga karaktera, i to prapovijesni grobni humci, što vjerojatno ukazuje na izrazitiji intenzitet korištenja otoka u prošlosti. Ipak, kao bi se potvrdio i jasno definirao karakter gomila, kao i kronološko određenje svake, trebaju se provesti stručna arheološka iskopavanja.

    Authors: Željka Bedić; Juraj Belaj; Filomena Sirovica;

    The analysis comprised of 50 skeletons from the sacristy of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gora, buried from the beginning of the 11th century until the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century and chronologically divided into four burial phases. In all phases, a high average age at death was observed in females, who are noticeably underrepresented in all the phases except the first. The highest mortality of subadults was recorded between 2 and 8 years of age, when physiological stress is greatest. Indicators of subadult stress have been recorded in all phases, suggesting poor living conditions and inadequate diet. This is further indicated by the cases of scurvy in the first and second phases as well as infectious diseases in the first (leprosy) and fourth (tuberculosis) phases. On the other hand, the Gora sample generally had a low frequency of traumas, most of them related to accidental injuries. However, the presence of intentional violence is indicated by a perimortem trauma in a subadult from the first phase and an antemortem trauma on the nasal bones of a female from the fourth phase. The relatively small sample had a surprisingly large number of pathological changes, a high frequency of subadult stress indicators, and the presence of intentional violence; indicating unfavourable living conditions in this area in all the considered phases. Iz sakristije crkve Uznesenja Blažene Djevice Marije u Gori analizirano je 50 kostura koji se datiraju od samoga početka XI. pa sve do kraja XVI. ili početka XVII. stoljeća te su kronološki podijeljeni u četiri faze ukopavanja. U svim je fazama kod žena uočena visoka prosječna doživljena starost te je, osim u prvoj fazi, primjetna njihova podzastupljenost u odnosu na muškarce. Najveći mortalitet djece zabilježen je između 2. i 8. godine života kada je fiziološki stres najveći. Pokazatelji subadultnog stresa zabilježeni su u svim fazama te ukazuju na loše životne uvjete i neadekvatnu prehranu. Na to upućuju i slučajevi skorbuta zabilježeni i u prvoj i u drugoj fazi te pojava zaraznih bolesti u prvoj (lepre) i četvrtoj fazi (tuberkuloze). S druge strane, u gorskom je uzorku zabilježena niska učestalost trauma, a većina prisutnih odnosi se na slučajne ozljede. Ipak, o prisutnosti namjernoga nasilja govori perimortalna trauma kod djeteta iz prve faze te antemortalna trauma na nosnim kostima žene iz četvrte faze. Na relativno malome uzorku iz sakristije zabilježen je iznenađujuće velik broj patoloških promjena, visoka učestalost indikatora subadultnog stresa i prisutnost namjernoga nasilja, što ukazuje na nepovoljne životne uvjete na ovome prostoru u svim razmatranim fazama.

    Authors: Marin Matković;

    Authors: Katarina Šprem;

    Authors: Knežić, Dolores; Šoštarić, Renata; Čelhar Martina;

    U radu su analizirani biljni makroostaci na glinenim ulomcima s organskim primjesama s nalazišta Nadin – Gradina u sjevernoj Dalmaciji. Ulomci keramičke posude većih dimenzija skladišne namjene potječu iz jednog zatvorenog naseobinskog konteksta (SJ 419) datiranog radiokarbonskom metodom u razdoblje starijeg željeznog doba, odnosno u vremenski okvir posljednje četvrtine 9. st. pr. Kr. do sredine 8. st. pr. Kr. Organske primjese korištene su od najranijh vremena u smjesi za izradu keramike kako bi se utjecalo na svojstva konačnog keramičkog produkta. Takvi sušeni ili pečeni keramički predmeti sadrže tragove korištenja biljnih primjesa u vidu otisaka i biljnih ostataka. Identificirani biljni ostaci većim dijelom potječu od ostataka vršidbe žitarica: pšeno, stabljike i listovi te pljeve i ostaci klasa. Na temelju analize otisaka i ostataka biljnih primjesa bilo je moguće determinirati krupnozrne žitarice: ječam (Hordeum sp.) i pšenicu (Triticum sp.) te sitnozrne: proso/muhar (Panicum/Setaria sp.). Od ostalih nalaza pronađeni su tragovi masline (Olea europaea) i drijena (cf. Cornus mas) te skupine trava (Poaceae). Otisci i ostaci biljnih primjesa u keramici često ostaju nezamijećeni, iako predstavljaju vrijednu dopunu klasičnoj analizi biljnih makrofosila, a time i dodatne podatke o gospodarskim strategijama i okolišu zajednice koja je keramiku proizvela.

    U Zemaljskome muzeju Bosne i Hercegovine, u Franjevačkome samostanu u Tolisi, zatim muzeju u Doboju, Muzeju Hercegovine u Mostaru kao i drugim muzejskim ustanovama, između mnogobrojnih nalaza, čuva se i određeni broj predmeta koji se mogu uvrstiti u širu skupinu predmeta koji pripadaju pojasnim garniturama, okovima, falerama, dugmadima, pojasnim jezičcima, privjescima, vrhu korice mača te dijelovima kacige. Ovi predmeti u najvećoj mjeri pripadaju dijelu vojničke opreme za remenje, pojaseve, zatim kao dio konjske opreme, cipela, oklopa i drugih dijelova. Navedeni predmeti služili su u praktične svrhe, ali i kao dio dekorativnoga sadržaja. U nekim slučajevima pojedine forme su u odnosu na interpretaciju mogle imati i apotropejsko i profilaktičko značenje. S obzirom na široki spektar predmeta koji su obrađeni, i datacijski okvir je razmjerno širi te se kreće od 1. stoljeća pa do razdoblja kasne antike. Among the many artefacts held by the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Franciscan monastery in Tolisa, the museum in Doboj, the Museum of Herzegovina in Mostar and other museums, are a number that form a diverse group including belt sets, belt plates, phalerae, buttons, strap-ends, pendants, the tips of scabbards and helmet parts. Most of these are belonged to military straps and belts, or to horse harness, shoes, armour etc., and were both practical and decorative. Some examples could be interpreted as apotropaic and prophylactic in nature. This broadly defined group also covers a wide range of dates, from the 1st century to late Antiquity.

    Authors: Marijan, Mia;

    Authors: Željka Bedić; Juraj Belaj; Filomena Sirovica;
