The Rome Prize of the German Academy Villa Massimo is by far the most important award for German artists. It is awarded to renowned artists from the fields of fine arts, composition, literature, and architecture. Despite the award’s sig- nificant status, its position in the German literary and cultural-political system and the selection policy on which it is based remains largely under-researched. This article examines institutional and personal networks of the Rome Prize, the objecti- ves of the respective actors and the mechanisms of selection. The major aim of the study is to analyse archival material on writers who have received grants. The pe- riod of investigation begins in 1957 and ends in 1974 with the institutional reorgani- zation of the Villa Massimo. Wydział Socjologii Głównym problemem badawczym podejmowanym w rozprawie jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, jaki charakter mają relacje łączące współczesną sztukę i nauki społeczne. Pracy badawczej towarzyszą trzy główne cele: 1) rekonstrukcja przemian w obrębie studiowanych relacji w kontekście europejskim w perspektywie uwarunkowań historycznych i współczesnych; 2) uporządkowanie i rozwinięcie koncepcji interdyscyplinarności; 3) identyfikacja, usystematyzowanie oraz analiza współczesnych form współdziałania pomiędzy sztuką i naukami społecznymi. Rozprawa składa się z dwóch części: teoretycznej i empirycznej. Część teoretyczna obejmuje: 1) rekonstrukcję historycznych porządków społecznych; 2) opis koncepcji interdyscyplinarności; 3) analizę „interdyscyplinarnych” predyspozycji i strategii wpisujących się w logiki działania nauk społecznych oraz współczesnej sztuki; 4) problematykę współczesnych kontekstów interdyscyplinarnych związków między nimi; 5) analizę stanu badań na temat przedsięwzięć łączących sztukę i nauki społeczne. Na część empiryczną składa się: 6) omówienie metodologii badań empirycznych oraz przebieg badania CAWI; 7) przedstawienie wyników badań dotyczących specyfiki przedsięwzięć łączących sztukę i nauki społeczne; 8) analiza motywacji towarzyszących autorom projektów oraz problemów i ograniczeń, na jakie ich działania napotykają; 9) opis modeli multi- inter- i transdyscyplinarnej współpracy występujących w badanych projektach. The main research problem of my dissertation is the nature of the relationship between contemporary art and social sciences. The research has three objectives: 1) to reconstruct transformations within the studied relationship in the European context from a historical and contemporary perspective; 2) to investigate the development of the concept of interdisciplinarity; 3) to identify, systematise and analyse contemporary practices at the intersection of art and social sciences. The dissertation is divided into two parts: theoretical and empirical. The theoretical addresses: 1) the historical reconstruction of the social orders; 2) the concept of interdisciplinarity; 3) 'interdisciplinary' predispositions and strategies embedded in the logic of social sciences and contemporary art fields; 4) the contemporary contexts of the interdisciplinary intersections between art and social sciences; 5) the state of research on the practices intertwining contemporary art and social sciences. The empirical part of the dissertations includes presentation of: 6) the methodology of the empirical research and the course of the conducted CAWI survey; 7) the research results concerning the specificity of the projects gathered in the study; 8) the analysis of the project authors’ motivations and the problems and constraints that their activities encounter; 9) the models of multidisciplinary collaboration present in studied projects.

During the large flood of the Vistula River in 2010, the riverine brackish water surface plume extended up to 70 km into the Gulf of Gdańsk (Baltic Sea), leaving a thin layer of medium-grained sand deposits. It inspired a search for palaeoflood records in marine sediments. Thus, we aimed to identify the most useful flood indicators and apply them to reveal palaeoflood records in sediment cores from the Gulf of Gdańsk. The study is based on analyses of surface samples, collected during and one year after the 2010 flood, and two long sediment cores, which were subjected to high-resolution grain size, diatom, and geochemical analyses, while chronology was based on the combined AMS 14C, 210Pb and 137Cs dating. It was found that, in a water depth of less than 30 m, modern large flood deposits were not preserved after a year. Sediment cores retrieved from greater water depths (over 60 m) were composed of sandy mud, and most of the 1 cm thick sediment samples were characterized by unimodal grain size distribution. However, some of the samples were bimodal, with the additional mode in fine-grained fractions, which is interpreted to be the result of direct deposition from riverine flood surface water plume. The diatom assemblages revealed a moderate downcore variability, except for the intervals characterized by bimodal grain size distributions. They contained elevated amounts of benthic oligohalobous (freshwater) and decreased euhalobous and mesohalobous taxa, supporting the likely interpretation of these layers as deposited during river flood events. During the last c. 4 ka, a dozen major flood events were identified. However, their application to flood climate reconstruction is challenging because of relatively frequent and partly unknown changes in major river mouth positions in the past. We suggest that thin deposits of major floods left on the seafloor and subjected to further mixing maybe still recognized using a combination of high-resolution grain size distribution and diatom analyses supplemented by a good understanding of the depositional system history. Starting point of the undertaken research, is a serious doubt about the effectiveness of the heritage protection mechanisms functioning in polish legal system. In order to improve this efficiency, I make an attempt to find and describe a legal institution that, together with other institutions will create a new model of heritage management in Poland. Assessment of the current situation both as it comes to legislation and actual condition of monuments preservation allows us to indicate the needs which are about to be met by the new institution. Therefore it is essential to refocus the system from the protection to the management. Ownership of cultural goods, in relation to the obligation of protecting and sharing with public, has a specific encumbered nature. It has characteristics of the trusteeship that can be seen in relationship of the owner with the cultural goods and beneficiary. Therefore, the rest of the dissertation is devoted to the search for institution that implements both the fiduciary and managerial aspects, that meets the expressed needs and the encumbered nature of the ownership. On the example of a Scottish trust, I show that the structure of fiduciary property is consistent with the civil understanding of the right of ownership. It allows me to propose a legal solution in the form of a new, optional management model, which will shape the legal relationship of heritage in Poland. The core institution is fiduciary ownership of cultural goods. The whole concept is complemented by suggestions on how to introduce a new institution to the legal order and the elements supporting the main institution.

XI w. The dissertation discusses the early medieval pottery remains that were recovered from the oldest occupation horizons at the Ducal stronghold (site no. 15, 15c), the first suburbium (site no 14) and the second suburbium (site no 5.). These sites form the stronghold complex on the Lech Mountain in Gniezno. The preliminary thesis, methods, and descriptive criteria, that are important for the chronological, cultural, and social interpretations, were presented. The results of the pottery analysis were presented from a chronological and cultural perspective. Three horizons were distinguished: the early Slav horizon, the tribal horizon, and the early Piast dynasty horizon. The pottery was characterized based on the comparative analysis, including the deposit processes and the significance of the stronghold complex on the Lech Mountain. The description showed the pottery amid the local, regional and western Slavic pottery production. It was proven that foreign elements, characteristic for the northern and southern cultural circles, must have had an influence on the development of Gniezno pottery from the 8th to the 1st half of the 11th century.

In his Prolegomena to Historiosophy, published in 1838, August von Cieszkowski wrote that we are at the turning point in history, when facts turn into deeds. This raises the question of what is actually to be understood by the term “deed” [Tat] and why, the hour of the deed should have come precisely now. After focusing on Hegel’s concept of a history of freedom, I will present two models of understanding action and conclude by discussing their consequences. More specifically, I will undertake a search that will lead us – by way of a detour via Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit – to Fichte’s concept of the act of doing. That socio-political practice can be justified in this way, however, is denied by those who argue that society and politics in Hegel fall under the category of objective and not of absolute spirit. The alternative model of action that I will focus on, concerns action in relation to objects, or labour, a model that Hegel had already worked out in Jena, and that Marx will re-discover (rather than invent) and further develop.

Today, strategic culture becomes an essential element of the national security policy of the Russian Federation. While absorbing some modern aspects, its strategic culture reflects historical lessons learnt by the Russian Empire and the USSR. Russia still cannot refuse from the idea to restore its superpower status and to fight for new territories. Thus, we can define a number of essential elements of the Russian strategic culture formed in relation to the historical and contemporary development of this state. Throughout the history, the Russians have legitimized the decisions and activities of the ruling elites. As the Russian leadership has long built up powerful associations which had taken root in the minds of people while remembering patriotism and love for their Motherland, the Russians believe in the importance of maintaining and enhancing patriotic feelings. While cultivating its civilizational and cultural detachment, Russia continues developing its own messianic idea which envisages the views of the special historical kismet of Russia. In order to fulfill its global tasks, Russia uses the policy of military interventions and violates state sovereignty of other countries, since the ‘militant’ political culture of its leaders has always militarized the strategic culture of the RF. So, the strategic culture of Russia emanates from the unique position and history of this state which manages to adapt it to the new realities. However, Russia’s aspirations to reclaim its status as a global superpower at any cost do not allow its strategic culture to be changed or even to be altered.

The purpose of this paper is to conduct the first systematic analysis of the spatio-temporal systems in Shakespeare’s dialogues along the lines of historical pragmatics and discourse analysis. The text used for analysis is The Riverside Shakespeare edited by Evans (1997). Language employs spatio-temporal systems by which the speakers judge how distant the situations they wish to express are from their domain. Such relationships of space and time are embodied by spatio-temporal elements such as pronouns, demonstratives, adverbs, tenses, and modals, with a proximal (close) and distal (distant) distinction. These elements can be related to each other to take either a proximal or distal perspective not only in either the spatial or temporal domain, but also in the integrated spatio-temporal domain. The speakers can continue to take the same perspective, or alternate different perspectives, in discourse. However, few studies have attempted such a comprehensive analysis of spatio-temporal systems in the development of English, not to mention in its Early Modern period. This paper performs both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the spatio-temporal systems in Julius Caesar. First, a quantitative analysis of how frequently each element of space and time is employed shows which perspective, i.e., proximal or distal, is likely to be taken. Second, a qualitative analysis reveals how these elements are related with each other to take either proximal or distal perspective, and how these perspectives change in discourse. In these analyses, the present paper pays attention to the interactions between the interlocutors in order to investigate how these interactions in dialogues impact the selection of elements of space and time. This research was supported by Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS KAKENHI No. 15K02595; No. 18K00642), which I gratefully acknowledge.

Abstract Old and Early Middle English did not yet have modal sentential adverbs of low probability. Old Norse did not have such words, either. From the 13th century onwards first epistemic prepositional phrases of Anglo-Norman origin functioning as modal adverbials consisting of the preposition per/par and nouns such as adventure, case, chance were borrowed into Middle English. In the late 15th century an analogous hybrid form per-hap(s), the combination of the Old French preposition per/par ‘by, through’ and the Old Norse noun hap(p) ‘chance’, both singular and plural, was coined according to the same pattern and was gradually grammaticalized as a univerbated modal sentence adverb in Early Modern English. The Norse root happ- was the source of some other new (Late) Middle English words which had no cognate equivalents in the source language: the adjective happy with its derivatives happily, happiness, etc. and the verb happen. Together with another new Late Middle English formation may-be, a calque of French peutêtre, perhaps superseded the competing forms mayhap, (modal) happily, percase, peradventure, perchance, prepositional phrases with the noun hap and, finally, per-hap itself in Early Modern English after two centuries of lexical layering or multiple synonymy. The history of perhaps is a clear example of grammaticalization, whereby a prepositional phrase became a modal adverb now also used as a discourse marker. We find here all the typical features of the process: phonetic attrition, decategorization, univerbation, and obligatorification.
