Any improvement in this process can directly affect the quality of the applications in which knowing the word’s senses is important. For example, word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, and clustering of web search result in lexically ambiguous queries. In this paper, we propose a novel WSI model that makes use of automatically generated lexical substitutes for a target word to construct a graph and data preparation for the next steps. Following the data preparation step, we make use of Leader–Follower graph clustering to find the basic senses of the target word. The senses of the target word inside the remaining or new upcoming instances will be decided according to their contextual embedding’s similarities with the basic sense. Besides, to make the number of found sense groups of a target word much closer to the reality, we apply post-processing at the end. The results of experiments on SemEval2010 dataset confirm that the proposed method outperforms all the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of both harmonic and geometric v-measure and f-score with a lower average number of sense groups.

Recently, a lot of progress has been made by adopting multimodal deep learning approaches for integrating vision and language. However, the task of developing image captioning models is most commonly addressed using datasets of natural images, while not many contributions have been made in the domain of artwork images. One of the main reasons for that is the lack of large-scale art datasets of adequate image-text pairs. Another reason is the fact that generating accurate descriptions of artwork images is particularly challenging because descriptions of artworks are more complex and can include multiple levels of interpretation. It is therefore also especially difficult to effectively evaluate generated captions of artwork images. The aim of this work is to address some of those challenges by utilizing a large-scale dataset of artwork images annotated with concepts from the Iconclass classification system. Using this dataset, a captioning model is developed by fine-tuning a transformer-based vision-language pretrained model. Due to the complex relations between image and text pairs in the domain of artwork images, the generated captions are evaluated using several quantitative and qualitative approaches. The performance is assessed using standard image captioning metrics and a recently introduced reference-free metric. The quality of the generated captions and the model’s capacity to generalize to new data is explored by employing the model to another art dataset to compare the relation between commonly generated captions and the genre of artworks. The overall results suggest that the model can generate meaningful captions that indicate a stronger relevance to the art historical context, particularly in comparison to captions obtained from models trained only on natural image datasets.

Cultural heritage is an important factor in ensuring regional development. Practice has demonstrated that first sustainability of heritage sites needs to be ensured and tourism they generate should also be re-visited as current over-tourism models are unsustainable. The assumption is that cultural/creative industries (CCI) can be a powerful tool for heritage livability as well as for sustainable tourism based on experiences. In order to stimulate regional development, specific CCI measures are often introduced in public policies but results of policy interventions are rarely monitored. Their performance can be measured against the pre-set indicators. Research studies focusing on such indicators are scarce. This short communication provides a possible conceptual framework alongside concrete indicators for cultural/creative industries’ sector impact assessment on cultural heritage and sustainable experiential tourism on the policy as well as on the project level. Desk research and brainstorming methods were applied to design the indicator sets resulting in a tool which is to be further tested and used in practice.

This article describes a graph method for labeling word senses and identifying sentiment potential of lexemes by integrating the corpus- based syntactic-semantic dependency graph layer, lexical semantic resources and sentiment dictionaries. The method, implemented as ConGraCNet application, projects a semantic function to a particular syntactical dependency corpus layer and constructs a seed lexeme graph with high conceptual similarity collocates. Seed lexeme graph is clustered into subgraphs that reveal polysemous semantic nature of a lexeme in a corpus. Using a WordNet, a hypernym graph is created to assert a set of synset labels for a lexical cluster of the seed lexeme, thus providing a generalization of community features. In addition, by integrating sentiment dictionaries, we describe graph propagation methods for sentiment analysis. Original dictionary sentiment values are integrated into ConGraCNet lexical graph in order to calculate sentiment values of node lexemes and lexical clusters, and to ultimately identify sentiment potential of a seed lexeme with respect to a specific corpus. The method can be used for resolving sparsity of sentiment dictionaries and enriching the sentiment evaluation of lexical structures in sentiment dictionaries, revealing relative sentiment potential of polysemous lexemes with respect to a specific corpus. We exemplify the application of the methodology on several lexemes in different languages and corpora and present the evaluation results of two surveys. The proposed approach has the potential to be used as a complementary method to other NLP contemporary resources for the enrichment of various semantic tasks including word disambiguation, domain relatedness, sense structure, synonymy, antonymy and metaphoricity, as well as establish a cross- and intra-cultural discourse variations of prototypical conceptualization patterns and knowledge representations.

Transport and mobility in cities are important factors in the sustainability of the urbanized world. This article investigates one type of intra-urban transport: railway transport and the surrounding areas along the railway, i.e., whether railway corridors can be a factor in the sustainable development of cities in the 21st century. The aim of the article is to determine specific characteristics of railway corridors and identify problems and cultural-historical specifics related to the industrial cultural heritage of the railway. The article examines the importance of an integrated approach to the planning of railway corridors and emphasizes the importance of multicriteria analyses in the decision-making process for corridor areas. As a case study, the city of Osijek is selected because in the past the railway strongly influenced its economical and urban development. Concretization and specification methods applied to the city of Osijek prove that railway corridors can become factors of the sustainable development of cities. The article proves that railway corridors have the potential to transform sustainable urban development because they pass through central, often historical, city areas, they occupy large surfaces and have a long linear spatial continuity. The scientific contribution of the article is the identification and systematization of the contribution of the transformation of railway corridors to the sustainable development of cities.

In the wake of recent strong earthquakes in Croatia, there is a need for a detailed and more comprehensive post-earthquake damage assessment. Given that masonry structures are highly vulnerable to horizontal actions caused by earthquakes and a majority of the Croatian building stock is made of masonry, this field is particularly important for Croatia. In this paper, a complete assessment of an educational building in Zagreb Lower Town is reported. An extensive program of visual inspection and geometrical surveys has been planned and performed. Additionally, an in situ shear strength test is presented. After extensive fieldwork, collected data and results were input in 3Muri software for structural modeling. Moreover, a non-linear static (pushover) analysis was performed to individuate the possible failure mechanisms and to compare real-life damage to software results.

AbstractThis paper highlights the principal features of the Mw5.4 Zagreb earthquake. Located within the city limits at a depth of 10 km, the earthquake generated a peak ground acceleration of more than 0.2 g and a maximum spectral acceleration of about 0.6 g at 0.1 s in the historic downtown area. The situation was particularly challenging since the event occurred amid a partial Covid-19 lockdown at temperatures close to 0 °C, emphasizing the extensive and complex vulnerability of the local communities and individuals. 27 people were reported severely injured, one of which later died. The surprisingly high economic costs, needed to achieve a full reconstruction of damaged buildings and infrastructure in the affected area, are currently evaluated at more than 10B euros. Description of the organization of the emergency response in the first days and the observed damage to buildings is given with typical examples. The focus is on the performance of older masonry residential and cultural heritage buildings in the historic downtown, their inspection and evaluation of damage to structural and non-structural components. This information provides the basis for understanding of the negative impacts and clarifies the overall context identifying the enablers and barriers to the still ongoing recovery process. It also helps to increase the awareness of the seismic vulnerability of European cities with similar construction practices.

This, however, is a challenge because word meaning often depends on the context. Recent approaches to representing word meaning in context rely on lexical substitution (LS), where a word is represented with a set of meaning-preserving substitutes. While face valid, it is not clear to what extent substitute-based representation corresponds to the more established sense-based representation required for many NLP tasks. We present an empirical study that addresses this question by quantifying the correspondence between substitute- and sense-based meaning representations. We compile a high-quality dataset annotated with lexical substitutes and sense labels from two well-established sense inventories, and conduct a correlation analysis using a number of substitute-based similarity measures. Furthermore, as recent work has demonstrated the efficacy of system-produced substitutes for word meaning representation, we compare human- and system-produced substitutes to determine the performance gap between the two. Lastly, we investigate to what extent the results translate to the fundamental semantic task of word sense induction (WSI). Our experiments show the validity of LS for word meaning in context representation and justify the use of system-produced substitutes for WSI.

The model identifies the relevant document sections (personal information, education, employment, etc.) and the corresponding specific information at the lower hierarchy level (names, addresses, roles, skill competences, etc.). Our approach employs the transformer architecture and its multilingual implementation of the encoder part in the form of the BERT language model. The models are trained and tested on a large, manually annotated CV dataset, achieving high scores on standard accuracy measures. The proposed models exhibit important properties of end-to-end training and interpretability, which was investigated by visualizing the model attention and its vector representations.

Systems for 3D reconstruction are constantly developing but due to the shape and size of artifacts it is usually necessary to perform 3D scanning from several different positions in space. This brings up the problem of 3D registration which is a process of aligning different point clouds. Software-based 3D registration methods typically require identifying the sufficient number of point correspondence pairs between different point clouds. These correspondences are frequently found manually and/or by introducing a specially designed objects in the scene. On the other hand, in this work we explore whether OpenPose, a well-known deep learning model, can be used to find corresponded point pairs between different views and eventually assure a successful 3D registration. OpenPose is trained to find patterns and keypoints on images containing people. We acknowledge that many artifacts are indeed human like postures and we test our ideas on finding correspondences using OpenPose. Furthermore, if an artifact is nothing like human like appearance, we demonstrate a method introducing in 3D scene a simple human like image, and in turn allowing OpenPose to facilitate 3D registration between 3D scans from different views. The proposed 3D registration pipeline is easily applicable to many existing 3D scanning solutions of artifacts.

Any improvement in this process can directly affect the quality of the applications in which knowing the word’s senses is important. For example, word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, and clustering of web search result in lexically ambiguous queries. In this paper, we propose a novel WSI model that makes use of automatically generated lexical substitutes for a target word to construct a graph and data preparation for the next steps. Following the data preparation step, we make use of Leader–Follower graph clustering to find the basic senses of the target word. The senses of the target word inside the remaining or new upcoming instances will be decided according to their contextual embedding’s similarities with the basic sense. Besides, to make the number of found sense groups of a target word much closer to the reality, we apply post-processing at the end. The results of experiments on SemEval2010 dataset confirm that the proposed method outperforms all the state-of-the-art solutions in terms of both harmonic and geometric v-measure and f-score with a lower average number of sense groups.

Recently, a lot of progress has been made by adopting multimodal deep learning approaches for integrating vision and language. However, the task of developing image captioning models is most commonly addressed using datasets of natural images, while not many contributions have been made in the domain of artwork images. One of the main reasons for that is the lack of large-scale art datasets of adequate image-text pairs. Another reason is the fact that generating accurate descriptions of artwork images is particularly challenging because descriptions of artworks are more complex and can include multiple levels of interpretation. It is therefore also especially difficult to effectively evaluate generated captions of artwork images. The aim of this work is to address some of those challenges by utilizing a large-scale dataset of artwork images annotated with concepts from the Iconclass classification system. Using this dataset, a captioning model is developed by fine-tuning a transformer-based vision-language pretrained model. Due to the complex relations between image and text pairs in the domain of artwork images, the generated captions are evaluated using several quantitative and qualitative approaches. The performance is assessed using standard image captioning metrics and a recently introduced reference-free metric. The quality of the generated captions and the model’s capacity to generalize to new data is explored by employing the model to another art dataset to compare the relation between commonly generated captions and the genre of artworks. The overall results suggest that the model can generate meaningful captions that indicate a stronger relevance to the art historical context, particularly in comparison to captions obtained from models trained only on natural image datasets.

Cultural heritage is an important factor in ensuring regional development. Practice has demonstrated that first sustainability of heritage sites needs to be ensured and tourism they generate should also be re-visited as current over-tourism models are unsustainable. The assumption is that cultural/creative industries (CCI) can be a powerful tool for heritage livability as well as for sustainable tourism based on experiences. In order to stimulate regional development, specific CCI measures are often introduced in public policies but results of policy interventions are rarely monitored. Their performance can be measured against the pre-set indicators. Research studies focusing on such indicators are scarce. This short communication provides a possible conceptual framework alongside concrete indicators for cultural/creative industries’ sector impact assessment on cultural heritage and sustainable experiential tourism on the policy as well as on the project level. Desk research and brainstorming methods were applied to design the indicator sets resulting in a tool which is to be further tested and used in practice.

This article describes a graph method for labeling word senses and identifying sentiment potential of lexemes by integrating the corpus- based syntactic-semantic dependency graph layer, lexical semantic resources and sentiment dictionaries. The method, implemented as ConGraCNet application, projects a semantic function to a particular syntactical dependency corpus layer and constructs a seed lexeme graph with high conceptual similarity collocates. Seed lexeme graph is clustered into subgraphs that reveal polysemous semantic nature of a lexeme in a corpus. Using a WordNet, a hypernym graph is created to assert a set of synset labels for a lexical cluster of the seed lexeme, thus providing a generalization of community features. In addition, by integrating sentiment dictionaries, we describe graph propagation methods for sentiment analysis. Original dictionary sentiment values are integrated into ConGraCNet lexical graph in order to calculate sentiment values of node lexemes and lexical clusters, and to ultimately identify sentiment potential of a seed lexeme with respect to a specific corpus. The method can be used for resolving sparsity of sentiment dictionaries and enriching the sentiment evaluation of lexical structures in sentiment dictionaries, revealing relative sentiment potential of polysemous lexemes with respect to a specific corpus. We exemplify the application of the methodology on several lexemes in different languages and corpora and present the evaluation results of two surveys. The proposed approach has the potential to be used as a complementary method to other NLP contemporary resources for the enrichment of various semantic tasks including word disambiguation, domain relatedness, sense structure, synonymy, antonymy and metaphoricity, as well as establish a cross- and intra-cultural discourse variations of prototypical conceptualization patterns and knowledge representations.

Transport and mobility in cities are important factors in the sustainability of the urbanized world. This article investigates one type of intra-urban transport: railway transport and the surrounding areas along the railway, i.e., whether railway corridors can be a factor in the sustainable development of cities in the 21st century. The aim of the article is to determine specific characteristics of railway corridors and identify problems and cultural-historical specifics related to the industrial cultural heritage of the railway. The article examines the importance of an integrated approach to the planning of railway corridors and emphasizes the importance of multicriteria analyses in the decision-making process for corridor areas. As a case study, the city of Osijek is selected because in the past the railway strongly influenced its economical and urban development. Concretization and specification methods applied to the city of Osijek prove that railway corridors can become factors of the sustainable development of cities. The article proves that railway corridors have the potential to transform sustainable urban development because they pass through central, often historical, city areas, they occupy large surfaces and have a long linear spatial continuity. The scientific contribution of the article is the identification and systematization of the contribution of the transformation of railway corridors to the sustainable development of cities.

In the wake of recent strong earthquakes in Croatia, there is a need for a detailed and more comprehensive post-earthquake damage assessment. Given that masonry structures are highly vulnerable to horizontal actions caused by earthquakes and a majority of the Croatian building stock is made of masonry, this field is particularly important for Croatia. In this paper, a complete assessment of an educational building in Zagreb Lower Town is reported. An extensive program of visual inspection and geometrical surveys has been planned and performed. Additionally, an in situ shear strength test is presented. After extensive fieldwork, collected data and results were input in 3Muri software for structural modeling. Moreover, a non-linear static (pushover) analysis was performed to individuate the possible failure mechanisms and to compare real-life damage to software results.

AbstractThis paper highlights the principal features of the Mw5.4 Zagreb earthquake. Located within the city limits at a depth of 10 km, the earthquake generated a peak ground acceleration of more than 0.2 g and a maximum spectral acceleration of about 0.6 g at 0.1 s in the historic downtown area. The situation was particularly challenging since the event occurred amid a partial Covid-19 lockdown at temperatures close to 0 °C, emphasizing the extensive and complex vulnerability of the local communities and individuals. 27 people were reported severely injured, one of which later died. The surprisingly high economic costs, needed to achieve a full reconstruction of damaged buildings and infrastructure in the affected area, are currently evaluated at more than 10B euros. Description of the organization of the emergency response in the first days and the observed damage to buildings is given with typical examples. The focus is on the performance of older masonry residential and cultural heritage buildings in the historic downtown, their inspection and evaluation of damage to structural and non-structural components. This information provides the basis for understanding of the negative impacts and clarifies the overall context identifying the enablers and barriers to the still ongoing recovery process. It also helps to increase the awareness of the seismic vulnerability of European cities with similar construction practices.

This, however, is a challenge because word meaning often depends on the context. Recent approaches to representing word meaning in context rely on lexical substitution (LS), where a word is represented with a set of meaning-preserving substitutes. While face valid, it is not clear to what extent substitute-based representation corresponds to the more established sense-based representation required for many NLP tasks. We present an empirical study that addresses this question by quantifying the correspondence between substitute- and sense-based meaning representations. We compile a high-quality dataset annotated with lexical substitutes and sense labels from two well-established sense inventories, and conduct a correlation analysis using a number of substitute-based similarity measures. Furthermore, as recent work has demonstrated the efficacy of system-produced substitutes for word meaning representation, we compare human- and system-produced substitutes to determine the performance gap between the two. Lastly, we investigate to what extent the results translate to the fundamental semantic task of word sense induction (WSI). Our experiments show the validity of LS for word meaning in context representation and justify the use of system-produced substitutes for WSI.

The model identifies the relevant document sections (personal information, education, employment, etc.) and the corresponding specific information at the lower hierarchy level (names, addresses, roles, skill competences, etc.). Our approach employs the transformer architecture and its multilingual implementation of the encoder part in the form of the BERT language model. The models are trained and tested on a large, manually annotated CV dataset, achieving high scores on standard accuracy measures. The proposed models exhibit important properties of end-to-end training and interpretability, which was investigated by visualizing the model attention and its vector representations.

Systems for 3D reconstruction are constantly developing but due to the shape and size of artifacts it is usually necessary to perform 3D scanning from several different positions in space. This brings up the problem of 3D registration which is a process of aligning different point clouds. Software-based 3D registration methods typically require identifying the sufficient number of point correspondence pairs between different point clouds. These correspondences are frequently found manually and/or by introducing a specially designed objects in the scene. On the other hand, in this work we explore whether OpenPose, a well-known deep learning model, can be used to find corresponded point pairs between different views and eventually assure a successful 3D registration. OpenPose is trained to find patterns and keypoints on images containing people. We acknowledge that many artifacts are indeed human like postures and we test our ideas on finding correspondences using OpenPose. Furthermore, if an artifact is nothing like human like appearance, we demonstrate a method introducing in 3D scene a simple human like image, and in turn allowing OpenPose to facilitate 3D registration between 3D scans from different views. The proposed 3D registration pipeline is easily applicable to many existing 3D scanning solutions of artifacts.
