Over the past two decades, extensive research has been conducted on the rhetorical structure of research articles (RAs) from the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) genre approach. However, RA configuration from the Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) genre perspective remains under-investigated, particularly in the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) field. This study aimed to examine the deployment of SFL elemental genres to construct the TCM RAs. To this end, 40 empirical articles published from 2020 to 2021 were selected from five high-impact TCM journals for the analysis. The findings showed that report, recount, argument, and explanation were employed to construct the TCM RAs. Under these broad genre families, 13 elemental genres were identified, for instance, descriptive report, procedural recount, exposition and factorial explanation. Regarding the frequency, report and recount played a major role in configuring the TCM RAs whereas argument and explanation played a supplementary role. Moreover, the ESP genre held that the macro-structure of RA is shaped like an hourglass, which was also attested by the present SFL elemental genres in terms of the generic complexity. Such deconstruction of a macrogenre into elemental genres serving as building blocks of text promises pedagogical implications for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teachers and graduate students.

We use the information in the successive vintages of GDE and GDI to obtain an improved timely measure of U.S. aggregate output by exploiting cointegration between the different measures taking seriously their monthly release calendar. We also combine all existing overlapping comprehensive revisions to achieve further improvements. We pay particular attention to the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic, which, despite producing dramatic fluctuations, did not generate noticeable revisions in previous growth rates. Our results suggest that revised GDE estimates, unlike GDI ones, are increasingly precise and receive higher weights, but early estimates retain some influence.

Studied in the current literature solely for his miniature work at the court of Henry VIII, Lucas Horenbout (d.1544) was equally sought after as an illuminator of prayerbooks. His career in this genre marks an important inflection point in the history of English art. The late 15th and early 16th centuries saw the final fluorescence of the illuminated prayerbook. This occurred side-by-side with a publishing revolution anchored in new technology that changed the parameters of book production and distribution. The Reformation, together with the advent of the printing press, combined to transform the market for illuminating skills Lucas had learned in his father’s workshop in Ghent. His artistic output between 1530 and 1544 bridges the transition from traditional handwritten, hand-illuminated manuscripts to the modern, mass-produced printed book. This paper discusses that transition through Horenbout’s proposed work in five illuminated prayerbooks created for four different patrons: Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Kateryn Parr and Anne Stanhope, Countess of Hertford and later Duchess of Somerset, as well as his collaborative additions to the 1539 Great Bible under the patronage of Thomas Cromwell. Horenbout’s career demonstrates how an elite artist adapted his art both to a changing marketplace and to the shifting power politics of the Tudor court.

The mass retailing of fashionable clothing is a practice which is bounded both by time, since each season’s new styles renders previous garments obsolete, and by space, as innovations are promoted as sanctioned by fashion capitals such as Paris, London, or New York. This study of fashion advertising in British national periodicals from 1880–1914 reflects on the historiography of retailing, from Jefferys to Breward and Stobart, which often makes strong distinctions between London and the provinces. Case studies of two retailers with multiple branches, H.J. Nicoll and Alfred Stedall, and of two retailers selling through mail-order, John Noble and Pryce Jones, will examine the methods used to sell goods internationally, nationally and locally. These case studies will draw on unpublished publicity documents in the National Archives and other collections, and on advertisements in national and local newspapers. An analysis of discourses of place in fashion magazines will investigate the ways in which magazines acted as virtual spaces in which readers could both receive and offer information. This will lead on to a consideration of Appadurai and Augé’s concepts of space, place and non-place in consumption, and the applicability of these to earlier periods.

Reinforcement Learning holds great promise for data-driven decision-making in various social contexts, including healthcare, education, and business. However, classical methods that focus on the mean of the total return may yield misleading results when dealing with heterogeneous populations typically found in large-scale datasets. To address this issue, we introduce the K-Value Heterogeneous Markov Decision Process, a framework designed to handle sequential decision problems with latent population heterogeneity. Within this framework, we propose auto-clustered policy evaluation for estimating the value of a given policy and auto-clustered policy iteration for estimating the optimal policy within a parametric policy class. Our auto-clustered algorithms can automatically identify homogeneous subpopulations while simultaneously estimating the action value function and the optimal policy for each subgroup. We establish convergence rates and construct confidence intervals for the estimators. Simulation results support our theoretical findings, and an empirical study conducted on a real medical dataset confirms the presence of value heterogeneity and validates the advantages of our novel approach.

This article introduces a dynamic minimum variance portfolio (MVP) model using nonlinear volatility dynamic models, based on high-frequency financial data. Specifically, we impose an autoregressive dynamic structure on MVP processes, which helps capture the MVP dynamics directly. To evaluate the dynamic MVP model, we estimate the inverse volatility matrix using the constrained l1-minimization for inverse matrix estimation (CLIME) and calculate daily realized non-normalized MVP weights. Based on the realized non-normalized MVP weight estimator, we propose the dynamic MVP model, which we call the dynamic realized minimum variance portfolio (DR-MVP) model. To estimate a large number of parameters, we employ the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and predict the future MVP and establish its asymptotic properties. Using high-frequency trading data, we apply the proposed method to MVP prediction.

Abstract With theoretical support of critical discourse studies (VAN DIJK, 2009, FAIRCLOUGH, 2010, RESENDE, 2019) and the interdiscursive analysis of public policies (Resende, 2018, Fischer, 2016), in this paper I present results of a project that focused on representations in online journalism regarding public policies aimed at the homeless population. The research project “Representação de políticas públicas para população em situação de rua como gestão do território: metáforas espaciais na Folha de S. Paulo” (CAPES 88881.172032 / 2018-01) considered the main newspaper of the city of São Paulo, in its digital platform. In a corpus of 105 texts on public policies analyzed through a QDA software, the paper focus on metaphors about social services towards the homeless population. I take the categories of metaphors proposed by Charteris-Black (2004) as an epistemological key. The analyzes show texts that relate public policies to war, and consistently associate people in homelessness to danger. Metaphors also objectify people on homelessness, which is consistent with the representation of their forced displacements, or associate homeless people with dirt, consistent with the hygienist policies reported in the newspaper.

Abstract Background To advance new therapies into clinical care, clinical trials must recruit enough participants. Yet, many trials fail to do so, leading to delays, early trial termination, and wasted resources. Under-enrolling trials make it impossible to draw conclusions about the efficacy of new therapies. An oft-cited reason for insufficient enrollment is lack of study team and provider awareness about patient eligibility. Automating clinical trial eligibility surveillance and study team and provider notification could offer a solution. Methods To address this need for an automated solution, we conducted an observational pilot study of our TAES (TriAl Eligibility Surveillance) system. We tested the hypothesis that an automated system based on natural language processing and machine learning algorithms could detect patients eligible for specific clinical trials by linking the information extracted from trial descriptions to the corresponding clinical information in the electronic health record (EHR). To evaluate the TAES information extraction and matching prototype (i.e., TAES prototype), we selected five open cardiovascular and cancer trials at the Medical University of South Carolina and created a new reference standard of 21,974 clinical text notes from a random selection of 400 patients (including at least 100 enrolled in the selected trials), with a small subset of 20 notes annotated in detail. We also developed a simple web interface for a new database that stores all trial eligibility criteria, corresponding clinical information, and trial-patient match characteristics using the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) common data model. Finally, we investigated options for integrating an automated clinical trial eligibility system into the EHR and for notifying health care providers promptly of potential patient eligibility without interrupting their clinical workflow. Results Although the rapidly implemented TAES prototype achieved only moderate accuracy (recall up to 0.778; precision up to 1.000), it enabled us to assess options for integrating an automated system successfully into the clinical workflow at a healthcare system. Conclusions Once optimized, the TAES system could exponentially enhance identification of patients potentially eligible for clinical trials, while simultaneously decreasing the burden on research teams of manual EHR review. Through timely notifications, it could also raise physician awareness of patient eligibility for clinical trials.

The Jomon period of Japan is characterised by a unique combination of sedentary and hunting/gathering lifestyles, spanning for more than 10,000 years from the final Pleistocene to the Holocene. The transition from the preceding Palaeolithic period to the Jomon period is known to have begun with the appearance of pottery usage. However, knowledge of the genetic background of the Jomon people is still limited. We aimed to determine the population-scale complete mitogenome sequences of the Initial Jomon human remains and compare the occurrence of mitochondrial haplogroups in the Jomon period from temporal and regional perspectives. For human remains dated to 8200–8600 cal BP, we determined their complete mitogenome sequences using target enrichment-coupled next-generation sequencing. We successfully obtained the complete mitogenome sequences with high depth of coverage and high concordance on consensus sequences. These sequences differed by more than three bases each, except for two individuals having completely identical sequences. Co-existence of individuals with haplogroups N9b and M7a was first observed at the same archaeological site from the Initial Jomon period. The genetic diversity within the population was not found to be low even in the Initial Jomon period.

The culture and artistic heritage of Ghana have been endorsed by the rich influence of Akan symbols like Adinkra, the akuaba doll, and others from various ethnic groups. However, the integration of ethnically unique near-extinct symbols into an art piece to highlight the cultural diversity of Ghana for wall hanging is rare. This work brings to life indigenous Ghanaian symbols on the verge of extinction from four ethnic groups, namely, the Akan, Ewe, Ga-Adangbe, and Mole-Dagbani to design a wall hanging for interior decoration, especially for public spaces by adopting Cora Marshal’s aesthetico research to generate a “Quali-Aesthetico” model. The design aesthetically ingrained conceptual aboriginal art and near-extinct indigenous Ghanaian symbols from the four ethnic groups as inspiration. The creative integration of these symbols yielded an interesting art piece that provides a unique ambiance for a simulated interior-decorated airport and an art gallery suitably displayed on flat interior surfaces. Besides the artistic expression of the art piece, interpretations of the uniquely combined symbols and their philosophical meanings have been provided to educate the public about the rich Ghanaian cultural heritage. The art piece also seeks to preserve near-extinct identity symbols and create a sense of belonging for the younger generation.
