Le marché de la rencontre n’a pas attendu Meetic, Tinder ou Grindr pour prospérer. Tout au plus l’ère numérique lui a-t-elle conféré, en même temps qu’un regain de vitalité, une légitimité nouvelle. Pendant près de deux siècles, ce domaine d’activité de réputation douteuse a fait de la discrétion une qualité première. Son entremise est longtemps demeurée taboue dans les familles. L’examen des registres d’agences matrimoniales et de la presse dédiée aux annonces permet néanmoins de lever le voile. Par-delà les figures chères au vaudeville – ambitieux coureurs de dots, parents autoritaires, oies blanches ou vieilles filles rêveuses –, qui sont les créateurs de ces agences, quels sont les services qu’ils proposent et quelle en est la clientèle ? Du Courrier de l’hymen dans les années 1790 au Chasseur français (qui revendique 4,5 millions de naissances), les annonces sont aussi la source d’une histoire de l’ordinaire, à hauteur des hommes et des femmes à la recherche d’amour et de bons partis. Par leurs silences entendus et leurs connotations équivoques, elles nous apprennent ce qui, selon les époques, est communément perçu comme admis, désirable ou au contraire inacceptable. Elles sont ainsi des indices de la transformation des sociétés, qu’il s’agisse de l’équilibre entre enjeux économiques et romantiques, du poids des stéréotypes de genre ou des failles grandissantes de la société bourgeoise patriarcale.

This article presents a detailed chronology of the creation of L'Ami des hommes and the very special role played by Richard Cantillon's Essai sur la nature du commerce en général in this process. It shows that Mirabeau obtained the manuscript of the French translation of the Essai made by Cantillon himself through a marquis de Saint-George. We provide a biography of this obscure character and discuss his relationship with both Cantillon and the Marquis de Mirabeau. Then, we study how Mirabeau used Cantillon's text as a source of inspiration for four projects developed in different contexts. We show that, from 1740 to 1757, his relationship to Cantillon's text changed. His first two tries merely abstracted and rewrote the original text of the Essai to adapt it to a general readership. In the early 1750s, motivated by his discussions with his younger brother, the Chevalier de Mirabeau, on political economy, the marquis developed a more ambitious plan. He decided to provide an annotated edition of Cantillon's Essai. By 1756, Mirabeau realized that his ideas and interests had become so much different from those of Cantillon that it was best to reconceive his project as a stand-alone and completely original text, the one he finally published as L'Ami des hommes in 1757.

En Ukraine, les migrations vers l’Ouest de l’Europe, accentuées par la guerre menée par la Russie depuis 2014, s’inscrivent dans une longue histoire migratoire. Situé entre l’Europe et la Fédération de Russie, pris entre deux systèmes migratoires, le pays a connu, depuis le début des années 2000, un renversement des flux de l’Est vers l’Ouest. Les migrants ukrainiens ont ainsi pu développer leur connaissance du territoire européen et des réseaux de proches dans plusieurs pays. L’agression russe du 24 février 2022 renforce cette tendance d’une population ukrainienne qui regarde résolument vers l’Europe.

The Maldives Heritage Survey aims to systematically inventory and document endangered tangible cultural heritage in the Maldives – including mosques, cemeteries, Buddhist temple ruins, and other historical structures and physical objects – through digital photography, laser scanning, 3D modelling, and GIS to create an open-access resource website and heritage database. The materials documented through this work are critically endangered, facing both natural and human threats that jeopardize the survival and accessibility of historical information for this vital node in pre-modern global economic and religious networks at the cross-roads of an interconnected Indian Ocean world. The project, based at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, is led by Dr Michael Feener and funded by Arcadia. Work in the country is done in partnership with the Maldives Department of Heritage (now National Center for Cultural Heritage) and with the support of Washington University’s SaieLab and the Earth Observatory of Singapore at Nanyang Technological University. Ce livre propose dix portraits de célibataires sur le temps long de l’histoire, du Moyen Âge au XXe siècle. Il part du constat d’une invisibilité des célibataires dans les recherches historiques en France : le célibat y a rarement été perçu comme une variable significative de la vie des individus, ou bien il n’est abordé qu’en négatif du mariage. Sans prétendre à la synthèse, l’ouvrage veut présenter différentes « vies de célibat », historiquement et socialement situées. Penser des individus par leur célibat permet à la fois de comprendre ce qu’être célibataire veut dire selon les époques, quelles pratiques sociales et quelles représentations collectives recoupe cette notion. Cette galerie de portraits incarne donc, par des trajectoires de vies, la progressive formalisation et stigmatisation du célibat face à la norme du mariage.

The Maritime Asia Heritage Survey works to systematically inventory and document endangered tangible cultural heritage in the Maldives and Indonesia – including historical structures, archaeological sites, manuscripts and physical objects. The documentation produced in the course of our work includes site, feature, and object records with geospatial data, digital photography, LiDAR point clouds, orthophotomaps, 3D models, CAD site plans and architectural elevations, IIIF digitized manuscripts, and oral history video interviews The materials documented through this work are critically endangered, facing both natural and human threats. Our work thus creates a digital archive of multimedia source material for the history of the Indian Ocean world.
