    Digital skills can be a valuable resource in work life, especially in such times as the current COVID-19 pandemic, during which working from home has become new reality. Although increasing numbers of older employees (aged 50 years and above) are using digital technologies to work remotely, many of these older adults still have generally lower digital skills. Whether the pandemic will be a push factor for the acquisition of computer skills in late working life remains unclear. This study investigated the explanatory factors of the computer skills gained by older workers who were working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, using representative data for 28 countries from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The analysis of the survey responses of 11,042 employed persons aged 50 years and older revealed that, 13% worked only at home due to the pandemic, while 15% said they worked at home and in their usual workplace. The descriptives indicate that full-time homeworking is more of an option among those with tertiary education and who already have some computer skills. Of the older employees who worked only at home, 36% reported an improvement in their computer skills, whereas of the older workers who worked at home and at their usual workplaces, only 29% reported such an improvement. Our results based on logistic regressions suggest that significantly more women, younger employees, respondents with tertiary educational qualifications, and those whose work was not affected by unemployment or even business closure acquired new computer skills, regardless of whether they were working permanently or only partly from home. The study underlines the importance of investigating the possible digital skills gained from the home office situation resulting from the pandemic.

    Celem niniejszego opracowania jest krytyczna analiza przepisów dotyczących nabywania przez kościoły i inne związki wyznaniowe nieruchomości z bonifikatą w trybie art. 68 ust. 1 pkt 6 ustawy z dnia 21 sierpnia 1997 r. o gospodarce nieruchomościami. Przepis ten znajduje swoje uzasadnienie w gwarantowanej w Konstytucji Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej wolności sumienia i religii, a konkretnie w prawie do posiadania świątyń i innych miejsc kultu w zależności od potrzeb ludzi wierzących. Odnoszące się do tego przepisy są jednak nieprecyzyjne. Brakuje przede wszystkim legalnej definicji „celów działalności sakralnej”, którym mają służyć nabywane nieruchomości. Skutkuje to problemami interpretacyjnymi, co negatywnie oddziałuje na praktykę. Wskazując na luki w obowiązującym prawodawstwie, autorzy stawiają postulaty de lege ferenda, których celem jest zwiększenie transparentności procedur stosowanych przy nabywaniu przez związki wyznaniowe nieruchomości z bonifikatą i zapewnienie faktycznego wykorzystywania nabytych w tym trybie nieruchomości na cele sakralne. The present paper aims to critically analyze the regulations on purchasing real estates with a discount by churches and other religious organizations under Article 68 para. 1.6 of the Act of 21 August 1997 on the management of real estates. This provision is motivated by the freedom of conscience and religion and specifically by the right to possess sanctuaries and other places of worship for the satisfaction of the needs of believers guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. However, the relevant regulations are not precise enough. In particular, there is no legal definition of the “purposes of sacral activity” that are to be served by the purchased real estates. This gives rise to interpretation problems, which has a negative effect on practice. The paper points out the legal loopholes in the current legislation and makes de lege ferenda proposals aimed at enhancing transparency of the rules applied to purchasing real estates with a discount by religious organizations and ensuring that the purchased real estates are actually used for sacral purposes.

    Authors: Dranseika, Vilius; Bystranowski, Piotr; Żuradzki, Tomasz;

    There is a familiar claim that, when compared to the early days of bioethics, the role of philosophy in bioethics has diminished. Let’s call it the Disconnection Thesis. The latest discussion of this claim can be found in a recent American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB) target article, "The Place of Philosophy in Bioethics Today" (Blumenthal-Barby et al. 2022). While the authors do not openly endorse the claim, much of the paper consists of suggestions on how the role of philosophy in bioethics could be made more pronounced. However, do we know whether the Disconnection Thesis is true? How could we test it? And even if we concede that philosophy plays a relatively small role in bioethics today, can we check whether that role was significantly more marked at some earlier stage of this relatively young academic field? In this blog post, based on our commentary just published in AJOB (Bystranowski, Dranseika, Żuradzki 2022b) we would like to do two things. First, we describe several attempts to test the claim that the role of philosophy in bioethics has diminished. Second, we want to encourage the readers to suggest what other observable - and testable - patterns we could expect were this claim true.

    A short history of the Library, which was established in 1972 within the structures of the Institute of Inventiveness and Protection of Intellectual Property. The article presents the history of the Library, which is inextricably linked with the history of the Department of Intellectual Property Law of the Jagiellonian University (formerly the Institute of Intellectual Property Law of the Jagiellonian University) and with the organizational changes taking place in the structures of the Jagiellonian University. The described history of the library is a perfect picture of changes and technological development that also took place in librarianship. Krótka historia Biblioteki, która została utworzona w 1972 roku w strukturach Międzyuczelnianego Instytutu Wynalazczości i Ochrony Własności Intelektualnej. W artykule przedstawiono losy Biblioteki, które są nierozerwalnie związane z historią Katedry Prawa Własności Intelektualnej UJ (dawniej Instytut Prawa Własności Intelektualnej UJ) i ze zmianami organizacyjnymi zachodzącymi w strukturach Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Opisane dzieje Biblioteki stanowią doskonały obraz rozwoju technologicznego jaki miał miejsce także w bibliotekarstwie.

    Authors: Dąbrowski, Roman;

    L’objectif de cet article est de présenter les axes des transformations qui ont eu lieu dans l’utilisation de la tradition de l’épopée classique dans la poésie épique à l’époque des Lumières polonaises. Le sujet principal en sont les aspects les plus importants de ces transformations concernant les œuvres appartenant à l’épopée héroïque et, dans une moindre mesure, à l’épopée héroï-comique. Dans cette perspective, les textes d’Ignacy Krasicki s’avèrent les plus intéressants. Cependant, les ouvrages d’autres auteurs, notamment ceux créés dans les premières décennies du XIXe siècle, illustrent également le sujet abordé. Dans cet article l’auteur analyse les caractéristiques qui témoignent des tentatives visant à poursuivre et à développer les conventions épiques classiques, ainsi qu’à les transformer ou à les rattacher à d’autres catégories esthétiques. The aim of the article is to show the directions of changes that took place in the use of the tradition of the classic epic in the epic poetry of the Polish Enlightenment. The most important aspects of these transformations concerning the works belonging to the heroic epic and, to a lesser extent, to the heroic-comic epic are the main subject of this paper. The works by Ignacy Krasicki turn out to be the most interesting. However, also the works of other authors, especially those written in the first decades of the 19th century, illustrate this issue well. The article shows their features that testify to attempts to continue classical epic conventions, transform them or combine them with other aesthetic categories. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie kierunków przemian, jakie dokonywały się w zakresie wykorzystania tradycji klasycznej epopei w poezji epickiej polskiego oświecenia. Przedmiotem uwagi stają się istotne z punktu widzenia tychże przemian aspekty wybranych dzieł należących do epiki heroicznej, w mniejszym stopniu heroikomicznej. Najbardziej interesujące okazują się tutaj utwory Ignacego Krasickiego. Także jednak dzieła innych autorów, szczególnie powstałe w pierwszych dekadach XIX w., dobrze ilustrują omawiane zagadnienie. W artykule omówione zostały te ich cechy, które świadczą o próbach kontynuowania klasycznych konwencji epickich, ich przekształcania lub łączenia z innymi kategoriami estetycznymi.

    The topic of a conversation of three literary scholars which took place in the last months of the Zbigniew Herbert Year (2018) is the experience recorded in the poet’s poems and essays of the Mediterranean culture, antiquity as a tool of cognition, an important code as well as the experience of his real journeys to the south of Europe being a kind of dividing line in his literary output and resonating in it.

    Authors: Fayard, Nicole;

    Recent Shakespearean productions, just like current European crises, have highlighted the exclusionary nature of European identity. In defining the scope of this special issue, the aim of this introduction is to shift the study of Shakespeare in/and Europe away from the ideological field of “unity within diversity” and its attendant politics of negotiation and mediation. Instead, it investigates whether re-situating Shakespearean analysis within regimes of exclusionary politics and group conflict attitudes helps to generate dynamic cultural and social understandings. To what effect is Shakespeare’s work invoked in relation with the tensions inherent in European societies? Can such invocations encourage reflections on Europe as a social, political and/or cultural entity? Is it possible to conceptualize Shakespearean drama as offering an effective instrument that connects―or not―the voices of the people of Europe?

    Authors: Prażmowska, Karolina;

    Sprawa Al Mahdiego przed Międzynarodowym Trybunałem Karnym jest sprawą przełomową, niepozbawioną kontrowersji. 27 września 2016 roku Międzynarodowy Trybunał Karny po raz pierwszy w historii wydał wyrok dotyczący zbrodni wojennej polegającej na zamierzonym kierowaniu ataków na budynki przeznaczone na cele religijne, edukacyjne, artystyczne, naukowe lub pomniki historyczne, pod warunkiem, że nie są one celami wojskowymi, powołując się tym samym na art. 8 ust. 2 lit (e) (iv) Statutu Rzymskiego. Sprawa Al Mahdiego stanowi punkt wyjścia dla historycznej analizy znaczenia kultury oraz jej ochrony w prawie międzynarodowym – od wąsko postrzeganego przedmiotu ochrony w postaci dóbr kulturalnych, w czasach konfliktu zbrojnego, poprzez ochronę dziedzictwa kulturalnego w jego materialnym wyrazie, do ochrony dziedzictwa niematerialnego. Obecne rozumienie kultury jako tworu żywego oraz dostrzeżenie znaczenia, jakie kultura oraz dziedzictwo odgrywają zarówno dla lokalnych wspólnot, jak i społeczności międzynarodowej, czyni dziedzictwo istotnym elementem ludzkiej godności i tym samym praw człowieka. The case of Al Mahdi in the International Criminal Court is a landmark case, though being a controversial one. On 27th of September 2016 the ICC for the first time issued a judgement concerning the war crime of intentionally directing attacks against buildings dedicated to religion, education, art, science or historic monuments, provided they are not military objectives. The case of Al Mahdi is a starting point for the historical analysis of the notion of culture in the international law – from the cultural property, protected in the times of armed conflicts, through cultural heritage in its tangible form, to intangible heritage. By understanding culture as dynamic and pivotal for local societies, as well as for international community, cultural heritage is now being perceived as an important part of human dignity and thus human rights.

    Authors: Nowicka, Daria;

    In his book Poeta w labiryncie historii. Studia o pisarskich rolach Jerzego Ficowskiego (Poet in the labyrinth of history. Studies on writer’s roles of Jerzy Ficowski) Jerzy Kandziora strives to provide a holistic outlook on the literary output of the author of Ptak poza ptakiem (A bird beyond birds). The main interpretation categories proposed by the scholar include time, labyrinth and history. They allowed the author to create a cross-section book ranging from describing Ficowski’s pre-poetic life, through his literary and artistic fascinations with Schulz, Wojtkiewicz, Tuwim and the everyday world, to the experience of borderland, both literal and poetic. Using this essayistic and also in some fragments synthetic form of description, Kandziora marks a new trend in interpreting the poet’s output and draws attention particularly to the impact of the social imaginary for the functioning of the poet in contemporary literary studies. Jerzy Kandziora w swojej książce Poeta w labiryncie historii. Studia o pisarskich rolach Jerzego Ficowskiego podjął próbę całościowego spojrzenia na twórczość autora Ptaka poza ptakiem. Głównymi kategoriami interpretacyjnymi zaproponowanymi przez badacza stały się czas, labirynt i historia. Pozwoliły one autorowi na typ lektury przekrojowej – począwszy od opisania życia przedpoetyckiego Ficowskiego, przez jego literackie i artystyczne fascynacje Schulzem, Wojtkiewiczem, Tuwimem, światem codziennym, aż po doświadczenie pogranicza, tego dosłownego i poetyckiego. Tą eseistyczną, fragmentami również syntetyczną forma opisu, Kandziora zaznacza nowy nurt odczytań twórczości poety, zwraca uwagę zwłaszcza na wpływ społecznego imaginarium w funkcjonowaniu poety we współczesnym literaturoznawstwie.

    Authors: Stanisławski, Tadeusz; Filak, Agnieszka;

    Authors: Dranseika, Vilius; Bystranowski, Piotr; Żuradzki, Tomasz;

    Authors: Dąbrowski, Roman;

    Authors: Fayard, Nicole;

    Authors: Prażmowska, Karolina;

    Authors: Nowicka, Daria;
