    Η ελληνική αρχιτεκτονική έχει μια μακρά ιστορία που μπορεί να χρονολογηθεί πολλές χιλιετίες πίσω. Ένα συναρπαστικό χαρακτηριστικό αυτού είναι το πώς είχε εξαπλωθεί και επηρεάσει την αρχιτεκτονική των κοντινών και μακρινών περιοχών. Σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις, η αρχιτεκτονική επιρροή διαδόθηκε μέσω στρατιωτικών εκστρατειών όπως του Αλεξάνδρου. Σε άλλες περιπτώσεις υιοθετήθηκε αργότερα για συμβολικούς λόγους. Αυτή η εργασία αναλύει την αληθοφάνεια της ελληνιστικής επιρροής στην αρχαία θρησκευτική αρχιτεκτονική της Σρι Λάνκα στο πλαίσιο του Transmission of Design. Η μελέτη μου επικεντρώνεται σε τρία σημαντικά χαρακτηριστικά μεταξύ του θόλου και του Vatadage. Το πρώτο είναι η δομική σύγκριση και η απεικόνιση των σημείων που μοιράζονται ορισμένα αρχιτεκτονικά χαρακτηριστικά, καθώς και πού διαφέρουν. Το δεύτερο είναι να χαράξουμε μια υποθετική διαδρομή επιρροής που βασίζεται σε ιστορικά δεδομένα. Το τελευταίο χαρακτηριστικό είναι να συγκρίνουμε τη συμβολική λειτουργία αυτών των θρησκευτικών κατασκευών για να κατανοήσουμε τους σκοπούς για τους οποίους χτίστηκαν. Greek architecture has a long history that can be dated back several millennia. A fascinating characteristic of that is how it had spread and influenced the architecture of regions near and far. In some cases, the architectural influence was spread through military campaigns such as Alexander’s. In other cases, it was later adopted for symbolic reasons. This paper analyzes the plausibility of Hellenistic influence in ancient Sri Lankan religious architecture within the framework of Transmission of Design. My study is focused on three significant characteristics between the tholos and Vatadage. The first is the structural comparison and illustrating where they share certain architectural attributes, as well as where they differ. The second is to draw a hypothetical path of influence based on historical data. The final characteristic is to compare the symbolic function of these religious structures to understand the purposes why they were built.

    Τα ιερά κορυφής, από τους κύριους τόπους λατρείας στη Μινωική Κρήτη, θεωρούνται ότι παρουσιάζουν αλλαγές κατά την Νεοανακτορική περίοδο. Η εμφάνιση υψηλής ποιότητας αναθημάτων, όπως οι ενεπίγραφες τράπεζες υγρών προσφορών, οι διπλοί πελέκεις, και τα ρεαλιστικής τεχνοτροπίας ειδώλια εκείνη την περίοδο έχουν ερμηνευθεί ως σημάδι επιρροής ηγετικών ομάδων. Ταυτόχρονα, τα ιερά κορυφής είναι από τους λίγους τόπους λατρείας που θεωρούνται ότι φιλοξένησαν λαϊκές τελετουργίες. Εάν και οι ηγετικές ομάδες και τα κατώτερα στρώματα της κοινωνίας συγκεντρώνονταν στα ιερά κορυφής, είναι απόλυτη ανάγκη να κατανοηθούν οι τρόποι με τους οποίους πραγματοποιούνταν αυτές οι διαδράσεις. Η σωστή εκτίμηση της κοινωνικής διάστασης των ιερών κορυφής κατά τη Νεοανακτορική περίοδο περιλαμβάνει μία λεπτομερή κατανόηση του τρόπου με τον οποίο το σύνολο του υλικού συμμετείχε στις τελετουργίες, τις διαμόρφωνε και επιδεχόταν συγκεκριμένου τύπου κοινωνικές διαδράσεις. Ο εξοπλισμός πυ χρησιμοποιήθηκε στην τελετουργική δραστηριότητα αποτελεί κλειδί για την επιτέλεση της τελετουργία ςκαθαυτής. Σε αυτή την εργασία, αναλύονται σημειωτικά λίθινα εγχάρακτα αγγεία και διπλοί πελέκεις από τα Νεοανακτορικά σύνολα, στο πλαίσιο μίας συγκειμενικής προσέγγισης, ώστε να αναγνωρισθεί η σημασία των τρόπων κοινωνικοποίησης κατά την περίοδο αυτή, η οποία αποτελεί και την ακμή του Μινωικού πολιτισμού. Peak sanctuaries, some of the main cult places in Minoan Crete, are known to present changes during the Neopalatial period. The appearance of high-quality votive objects, such as inscribed libation tables, double-axes, and naturalistic-style figurines during this period has been interpreted as a sign of elite influence. At the same time, peak sanctuaries are one of the few cult places known to have housed popular rituals. If both elite and lower strata of society congregated at peak sanctuaries, understanding the ways in which these interactions took place is imperative. Properly appreciating the social dimension of peak sanctuaries during the Neopalatial period entails a detailed understanding of how the material assemblage participated in the ritual, shaped it, and afforded certain social interactions. The paraphernalia utilized in ritual activity constitute a key in the performance of the ritual itself. In this work, stone-carved vases and double-axes from Neopalatial assemblages are analyzed semiotically and in a contextual approach, to acknowledge their importance to ways of socializing during this period that marks the heydey of the Minoan civilization.

    Authors: Mavroeidi Georgia;

    Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζονται τριάντα έξι τμήματα παναθηναϊκών αμφορέων τα οποία προέρχονται από τις σωστικές ανασκαφές για το έργο του ΤΡΑΜ στον Πειραιά. Αν και η μελέτη της συγκεκριμένης κατηγορίας κεραμικής είναι ιδιαίτερα προσφιλής στην έρευνα, τα νέα ευρήματα μπορούν να ρίξουν περισσότερο φως σε άγνωστες πτυχές της ζωής των ανθρώπων του Πειραιά. Τα ευρήματα καλύπτουν μια περίοδο μεγάλης διάρκειας από την Αρχαϊκή έως την Ελληνιστική εποχή και η μελέτη τους επιβεβαιώνει και συνάμα αντικατοπτρίζει την ιστορία και τη σημασία του Πειραιά ως επινείου της Αθήνας. Η πλειονότητά τους εντοπίστηκε σε μια πολυσύχναστη πλευρά της αρχαίας πόλης, όμορη με δημόσιους χώρους, με τον Κάνθαρο και τη ζώνη του Εμπορίου. Εκεί ανασκάφτηκαν κυρίως οικιστικοί χώροι με εργαστηριακές εγκαταστάσεις της κλασικής περιόδου και χώροι ιδιωτικής λατρείας της ελληνιστικής περιόδου. Ως προς το υλικό, απαντώνται τμήματα της κύριας και της δευτερεύουσας όψης καθώς και επιμέρους στοιχείων του αγγείου. Κεντρική μορφή των σωζόμενων αμφορέων είναι η Αθηνά, ενώ διατηρούνται και αποσπασματικές απεικονίσεις γυμνικών και ιππικών αγωνισμάτων. Η διάρθρωση της εργασίας εκτείνεται σε έξι κύρια μέρη. Η Εισαγωγή πραγματεύεται στοιχεία σχετικά με το εξεταζόμενο θέμα, την εξέλιξη των Παναθηναϊκών αγώνων, τη σημασία των παναθηναϊκών αμφορέων ως επάθλων, τη διακίνηση των αμφορέων και του ελαίου. Στο κεφάλαιο Ι τίθεται εν συντομία η επισκόπηση της ιστορίας της έρευνας. Στο κεφάλαιο ΙΙ αναφέρονται πληροφορίες για τον αρχαίο Πειραιά, τις θέσεις προέλευσης του υλικού καθώς και παρατηρήσεις για τη φυσιογνωμία του. Στο κεφάλαιο ΙΙΙ παρουσιάζονται αναλυτικά τα κεραμικά ευρήματα και η διακόσμησή τους. Εξετάζεται η διακόσμηση και οι επιγραφές της κύριας όψης των αγγείων αλλά και η δευτερεύουσα όψη των αμφορέων με τα εικονιζόμενα αθλήματα. Τέλος διατυπώνονται τα γενικά συμπεράσματα. Έπεται ο Κατάλογος, που διαρθρώνεται με βάση το κεφάλαιο ΙΙΙ. Ειδικότερα, περιγράφονται αναλυτικά τα ευρήματα, συνοδευόμενα από εικόνες. Η εργασία κλείνει με την παράθεση των σχεδίων, των χαρτών καθώς και των συμπληρωματικών εικόνων. The present thesis examines thirty-six fragments of panathenaic amphoras from the rescue excavation work for the Tramway in Piraeus. Although the study of this category of ceramics is particularly popular in research, the new findings may shed more light on unknown aspects of the lives of the people of Piraeus. The findings cover a long period from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period and their study confirms and at the same time reflects the history and importance of Piraeus as the main port of Athens. Most of them originate from a central side of the ancient city, adjacent to public spaces as Kantharos and the Commerce Zone. In this area were excavated residential areas with laboratory facilities of the classical period and places of private worship of the Hellenistic period. The study material includes parts of the main and secondary sides of the vessels. The central figure of the surviving amphorae is Athena, while fragmentary depictions of athletic and equestrian events are preserved. The thesis is structured into six main parts. In the Introduction they are mentioned some details regarding the study material, the evolution of the Panathenaic Games, the importance of panathenaic amphoras as prizes, the trade of amphoras and panathenaic oil. Chapter I provides a brief overview of the research history. Chapter II gives information about ancient Piraeus, the places of origin of the material as well as observations on its physiognomy. Chapter III presents in detail the ceramic finds and their decoration. The decoration and the inscriptions of the main side of the vessels are examined, as well as the secondary side of the amphoras with the depicted sports. Finally, the general conclusions of this study are presented. The Catalog follows, structured on the basis of Chapter III. In particular, the findings are described in detail, accompanied by illustrations and some drawings. At the end are presented lists of drawings, maps and additional images.

    Αυτή η διατριβή εξετάζει τα αλεξανδρινά αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία και τον τρόπο με τον οποίο η Πτολεμαϊκή Αλεξάνδρεια εισήγαγε και εξήγαγε αρκετά αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία στις τρεις μεγάλες Πτολεμαϊκές πόλεις Κύπρο, Μακεδονία και Πέτρα. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο, εξετάζονται οι λόγοι και τα στοιχεία που οδηγούν στη διαμόρφωση της αλεξανδρινής αρχιτεκτονικής και πώς ο συγκρητισμός των ελληνικών και αιγυπτιακών πεποιθήσεων διαμόρφωσε τα στοιχεία της ταφικής αρχιτεκτονικής και των τάφων. Το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο συγκρίνει τα μακεδονικά αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία με άλλα ελληνιστικά και αλεξανδρινά και πώς αναπτύχθηκε η μακεδονική ταφική αρχιτεκτονική κατά την περίοδο των Πτολεμαίων, ιδιαίτερα ως προς τη λειτουργία και το υλικό. Το τρίτο κεφάλαιο εξετάζει τα αρχαιολογικά στοιχεία που σχετίζονται με την αρχιτεκτονική αλεξανδρινή επίδραση στους τάφους της Νέας Πάφου στην Κύπρο ως προς τα διαφορετικά αρχιτεκτονικά στοιχεία. Το τέταρτο κεφάλαιο επισημαίνει την ανάπτυξη των ελληνιστικών αλεξανδρινών στοιχείων στην αρχιτεκτονική της Πέτρας και πώς επηρέασε τα εσωτερικά και εξωτερικά μέρη των τάφων της Πέτρας και τα χαρακτηριστικά της αλεξανδρινής διακόσμησης που διαμόρφωσαν τα χαρακτηριστικά του κιονόκρανου, τοιχογραφίες κ.λπ. Εξάγονται συμπεράσματα σχετικά με το αποτέλεσμα της τεχνοτροπικής μετάδοσης και τις εξελίξεις του σχεδιασμού του τάφου στις περιπτώσεις που μελετήθηκαν στις προαναφερθείσες πόλεις. This dissertation examines Alexandrian architectural elements and how Ptolemaic Alexandria imported and exported several architectural elements to the three major Ptolemaic cities Cyprus, Macedonian and Petra. Chapter one, examines the reasons and evidence that lead to the formation of the Alexandrian architecture, and how the syncretism of Greek and Egyptian beliefs shaped the elements of funerary architecture and tombs. Chapter two, compares the Macedonian architectural elements with other Hellenistic and Alexandrian ones, and how the Macedonian tombs architecture developed during the Ptolemaic period, especially in terms of the function and material. Chapter three, examines the archaeological evidence relating to the architectural Alexandrian influence on Nea Paphos tombs in Cyprus in terms of the different architectural elements. Chapter four highlights the development of the Hellenistic Alexandrian elements in the architecture of Petra, and how it influenced the interior and exterior parts of Petra tombs and the Alexandrian decoration characteristics that formed the features of the capital, wall-paintings and etc. Conclusions are drawn on the result of style transmission and developments of tomb's design in the cases studied in the aforementioned cities.

This MA dissertation aims to shed some light on the close relationship that may have or may have not taken place between the newly arrived Greek settlers and the Indigenous Indiketan populations on the small emporion of Ampurias located in the Iberian Peninsula. The focus has been put on the first centuries of exchange between the two communities, to examine the initial contacts that took place in the Classical period. To achieve this, several pieces of archaeological remains have been addressed in this essay. To start, cult and ritual practices have been studied to understand how religion worked in the enclave. In the second place, funerary practices have been analysed in order to examine possible different practices linked to cultural manifestations. To finish, domestic pottery assemblages have also been interpreted, for they constitute one of our best sources regarding day-to-day activities.

    Greek like most languages contains vocabulary of exogenous origins. This thesis focuses on the non-Greek terms present in this language since the Linear B tablets, the oldest written record of Greek. Through the non-Greek lexicons attested on them, the connection between the early Greek speakers and the languages from which these vocabularies originated is explored, comparing the archaeological and written record. Situated in the prime position between east and west, and southern and northern Aegean, Delos in the Hellenistic period accommodated pilgrims, inhabitants, merchants and occasionally troops. This dissertation analyses the politics of representation within the confines of the sanctuary in veneration of Phoibos Apollo, Artemis and Leto. Focusing on dedication by Hellenistic kings, the subsequent impact on the Delian sacred landscape is explored. Both the physical ramifications of such benefactions and contributions are studied as well as the effects on the cultic and sacred experience of those visiting the sanctuary. Beginning with consideration of the history of Delos, the mythology surrounding the island as well as the first architectural contributions to the sanctuary, this study incorporates Delos’ past in order to contextualise its position in the Hellenistic epoch and simultaneously during the island’s own period of independence from political authority. By determining continuities and contrasts in the forms of construction and display from early times, the nuance of royal representation in the Hellenistic can be analysed.

    Authors: YAO Tianqi;

    Η διατριβή θα επικεντρωθεί στο θέμα της ζωφόρου του Παρθενώνα. Πρόκειται για ένα από τα πιο διάσημα μνημεία του κλασικού κόσμου. Με βάση τις προηγούμενες έρευνες για τη ζωφόρο του Παρθενώνα, οι περισσότερες από τις οποίες επικεντρώθηκαν στην ερμηνεία και την ταυτοποίηση των μορφών της ζωφόρου. Λιγότεροι ερευνητές συζητούν τη σημασία της ζωφόρου του Παρθενώνα. Με το ιστορικό υπόβαθρο της Αθήνας του 5ου αιώνα π.Χ. και την περιγραφή της ζωφόρου, προσπαθώ να εξηγήσω τη σημασία της ζωφόρου του Παρθενώνα για τους Αθηναίους με τις ταυτότητες των Αθηναίων, την πολιτική του Περικλή και την ηρωική εμπλοκή κατά τον 5ο αιώνα π.Χ. Τα αποτελέσματα αναμένεται να συμβάλουν στη μελέτη άλλων γλυπτών διακοσμήσεωνκαι τις ταυτότητες των θεατών. Οι ταυτότητες των Αθηναίων αντανακλούν διάφορες πτυχές. Ως προστάτιδα της Αθήνας, η Αθηνά ήταν σημαντική για την Αθήνα. Οι μύθοι για την Αθηνά και τα Παναθήναια δημιούργησαν την ταυτότητα των Αθηναίων. Με θρησκευτική έννοια, η πομπή των Παναθηναίων ως τελετουργία μετάβασης αποκαθιστούσε τη θέση της Αθηνάς και των Αθηναίων. Οι ταυτότητες των Αθηναίων ανδρών, του ιππικού, των γυναικών και των κοριτσιών είχαν ομοιότητες και διαφορές. Ο νέος πολίτης του Περικλή δημιούργησε την ταυτότητα των Αθηναίων κοριτσιών στην πολιτική. Δημιούργησε επίσης την ταυτότητα των Αθηναίων. Στον ηρωικό υπαινιγμό της ζωφόρου του Παρθενώνα, οι Αθηναίοι θα σκέφτονταν τους ιππείς και τα άρματα ως ήρωες που πολεμούσαν για την Αθήνα κατά τη διάρκεια του ιστορικού γεγονότος ή πέθαιναν στον πόλεμο του Μαραθώνα ή ως ήρωες που ακολουθούσαν τον Ερεχθέα εναντίον του Ευμόλπου. Για να τιμήσουν τη νίκη και τους ήρωες, οι γλύπτες απεικονίζουν τους ιππείς και τα άρματα στη ζωφόρο. The thesis will focus on the theme of the Parthenon frieze. It is one of the most famous monuments in the Classical world. Based on the former research on the Parthenon frieze, most of which focused on the interpretation and identification of figures on the frieze. Fewer researchers discuss the significance of the Parthenon frieze. With the historical background of Athens in the 5th century B.C and the description of the frieze, I try to explain the significance of the Parthenon Frieze to Athenians with Athenians’ identities, Pericles’ policies and heroic implication during the 5th century B.C. The results are expected to contribute to the study of other sculptural decorations and identities of viewers. The identities of Athenians reflect various aspects. As the protector of Athens, Athena was important to Athena. Myths about Athena and Panathenaia created an identity of Athenians. In a religious sense, the Panathenaic procession as rites of passage re-established the status of Athena and Athenians. The identities of Athenian men, cavalry, women and girls had similarities and differences. Pericles’ new citizen law created the identity of Athenian girls in politics. It also created the identity of Athenians. To the heroic implication of the Parthenon frieze, Athenians would think of horse riders and chariots as heroes fighting for Athens during the historical event or dying in the Marathon War or as heroes following Erechtheus against Eumolpos. To commemorate the victory and heroes, sculptors depict the horse riders and chariots on the frieze.

    Authors: Mavroeidi Georgia;

    Αυτή η μεταπτυχιακή διατριβή στοχεύει να ρίξει λίγο φως στη στενή σχέση που μπορεί να έχει ή μπορεί να μην έχει λάβει χώρα μεταξύ των νεοαφιχθέντων Ελλήνων αποίκων και των ιθαγενών Ινδικετανικοί πληθυσμοί στο μικρό εμπόριο του Αμπουριά που βρίσκεται στην Ιβηρική Χερσόνησος. Το επίκεντρο έχει δοθεί στους πρώτους αιώνες ανταλλαγής μεταξύ των δύο κοινότητες, για να εξετάσει τις αρχικές επαφές που έγιναν στην Κλασική περίοδο. Προς την για να επιτευχθεί αυτό, πολλά κομμάτια αρχαιολογικών καταλοίπων έχουν εξεταστεί σε αυτό το δοκίμιο. Αρχικά, οι λατρείες και οι τελετουργικές πρακτικές έχουν μελετηθεί για να κατανοηθεί πώς λειτουργούσε η θρησκεία τον θύλακα. Κατά δεύτερον, έχουν αναλυθεί ταφικές πρακτικές για να εξετάσει πιθανές διαφορετικές πρακτικές που συνδέονται με πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις. Για να τελειώσω, εγχώριο Οι συνθέσεις κεραμικής έχουν επίσης ερμηνευτεί, γιατί αποτελούν μια από τις καλύτερες πηγές μας σχετικά με τις καθημερινές δραστηριότητες.

    Authors: YAO Tianqi;
