    AbstractThis chapter reports an investigation into possible brain bases for negation. It begins with a review of negation experiments that used behavioral studies (measuring Reaction Time—RT), and functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) experiments that sought to identify local activations that correlate with the presence of negation. The chapter dwells on a major methodological problem that permeates the experimental study of negation processing, and proposes a solution: instead of overt negation, we study expressions that contain a covert negation—expressions that are Downward Entailing (DE) as evinced by their ability to reverse inferences and license NPIs in their scope. DE operators are thus taken to contain a hidden, or covert, negation, and contrast with the Upward Entailing counterparts (few vs. many; less vs. more). The chapter reviews behavioral experiments in healthy adults that indicate that DE has a processing cost, and an fMRI study that finds a single brain location for this computation. These results serve as a basis for an experiment on individuals with Broca’s aphasia. Tests with DE and UE quantifiers with these patients resulted in a mixed picture, which is discussed and its implications are derived.

    The referring expressions (REs) produced by a natural language generation (NLG) system can be misunderstood by the hearer, even when they are semantically correct. In an interactive setting, the NLG system can try to recognize such misunderstandings and correct them. We present an algorithm for generating corrective REs that use contrastive focus (“no, the BLUE button”) to emphasize the information the hearer most likely misunderstood. We show empirically that these contrastive REs are preferred over REs without contrast marking.

    En el presente artículo se cuestiona la noción de especialización agrícola a partir de los debates sobre las innovaciones técnicas y el desarrollo socioeconómico rural entre los siglos XVIII y XX. Para ello, los autores se basan en los resultados de las investigaciones que han actualizado la historia rural europea durante las últimas décadas y proponen tres posibles lecturas para entender cómo los cultivos y las actividades especializadas han transformado la organización de las explotaciones y de los territorios. En primer lugar, parten de la síntesis pionera de la historiadora Joan Thirsk sobre la agricultura alternativa para analizar las distintas maneras de describir y rechazar este fenómeno desde el punto de vista de la producción. La segunda lectura se centra en el desarrollo de las redes comerciales, las cadenas de suministro y los sectores industriales concebidos, en cierta medida, para modelar la huella espacial de los sistemas especializados. En tercer lugar, y desde el punto de vista de estos sistemas, estudian las dinámicas contemporáneas de intensificación productiva, racionalización técnica y selección socioeconómica. The article analyzes the notion of agricultural specialization looking at the debates on technical innovations and socio-economic development in the countryside between the 18th and the 20th century. It is based on the research literature that has renewed European rural history during the past decades. Three different perspectives are proposed to explore how specialized crops and activities transformed farming and regional organization. Firstly, the pioneering historical work on alternative agricultures by Joan Thirsk serves to compare various definitions and approaches to specialization from the production side. Secondly, the article questions how changes in commercial networks, supply chain and industrial activities can shape the spatial footprint of the specialized rural systems. Thirdly, these systems become the fieldwork for observing the contemporary dynamics of agricultural intensification, technical rationalization, and socio-economic selection.     Authors: Fernando Bermejo; Ezequiel A. Di Paolo; Mercedes X. Hüg; Claudia Arias;

    The sensorimotor approach proposes that perception is constituted by the mastery of lawful sensorimotor regularities or sensorimotor contingencies (SMCs), which depend on specific bodily characteristics and on actions possibilities that the environment enables and constrains. Sensory substitution devices (SSDs) provide the user information about the world typically corresponding to one sensory modality through the stimulation of another modality. We investigate how perception emerges in novice adult participants equipped with vision-to-auditory SSDs while solving a simple geometrical shape recognition task. In particular, we examine the distinction between apparatus-related SMCs (those originating mostly in properties of the perceptual system) and object-related SMCs (those mostly connected with the perceptual task). We study the sensorimotor strategies employed by participants in three experiments with three different SSDs: a minimalist head-mounted SSD, a traditional, also head-mounted SSD (the vOICe) and an enhanced, hand-held echolocation device. Motor activity and fist- person data are registered and analyzed. Results show that participants are able to quickly learn the necessary skills to distinguish geometric shapes. Comparing the sensorimotor strategies utilized with each SSD we identify differential features of the sensorimotor patterns attributable mostly to the device, which account for the emergence of apparatus-based SMCs. These relate to differences in sweeping strategies between SSDs. We identify, also, components related to the emergence of object-related SMCs. These relate mostly to exploratory movements around the border of a shape. The study provides empirical support for SMC theory and discusses considerations about the nature of perception in sensory substitution. Fil: Bermejo, Fernando Raul.     Authors: Rolland, Jorge;

    El análisis de manuales escolares en torno a la «transición a la democracia» muestra complejas relaciones entre el campo oficial, disciplinar y social. Se constata una secuencia común, con iconos y núcleos similares, y un marco compartido de significaciones («dualismo antinómico»), en una muestra encuadrada en las reformas de 1993 y 2006. Ello remite a un producto aceptado y aceptable legal, económica, política, disciplinar y socialmente. Pero asimismo existen acentuadas divergencias historiográficas (sobre el cambio histórico y sus fundamentos, y la epistemología) y distintas relaciones con los relatos críticos (integral, institucional) y las memorias sociales (de los gobiernos constitucionales, de los organismos de derechos humanos y militar), a partir de los relatos de la ruptura, continuidad y transición propiamente. Esto indica que los textos se entrelazan con las luchas de la historia y la memoria, con implicaciones para los jóvenes.     Till present, models that determined batch plants configurations in the chemical process industry resorted to models with binary variables to represent the different admissible options. This approach allowed representing the problem in a simple way while considering a significant number of alternatives. Nevertheless, the non-convexity that arises when dealing with detailed models for representing the involved units operation prevents its correct resolution or has a low performance. This work presents a representation of the problem through a superstructure that takes explicitly into account all the alternatives without resorting to binary variables. By using extremely simple modeling, it is possible to manage an appropriate number of options for this type of problems by means of a non-linear programming (NLP) model. Moreover, it is possible to consider duplication in series of production stages, which is an alternative that has not been used till now. This approach is posed for the case of a fermentors network. The solution is reached with very low requirements as regards employed computer time and without the aforementioned difficulties. Fil: Corsano, Gabriela.     Authors: García, Lila;

    El objetivo de este artículo es analizar si la reciente humanización de las legislaciones y políticas migratorias en Latinoamérica nos permite hablar de una nueva era de las migraciones en nuestra región. En efecto, los procesos de integración, los consultivos regionales en migración y las políticas y legislaciones domésticas en la región han virado en los últimos años hacia un entendimiento de estos procesos en clave de derechos humanos. De igual manera, el sistema interamericano de derechos humanos ha dado mayor visibilidad a las cuestiones migratorias. Luego, discuto estas incorporaciones recíprocas (de los derechos humanos en las migraciones y de estas en los derechos humanos) desde el rol del Estado, tanto a nivel internacional como doméstico, y los efectos de las determinaciones legales y sus incompatibilidades. El artículo concluye mostrando que los derechos humanos fueron construidos precisamente para el movimiento y que su reciente y mutua incorporación se debe al encuentro de las lógicas emancipatorias y regulatorias del paradigma de la modernidad. Por lo tanto, referir la migración con derechos humanos no cambia ni cuestiona sus puntos de partida y debemos pensar en una política regional del derecho humano a migrar. The objective of this article is to analyze whether the recent humanization of laws and migratory policies in Latin America allows us to speak of a new era of migrations in our region. In fact, the processes of integration, regional consultancies on migration, and domestic policies and legislation have all turned in recent years towards an understanding of these processes in terms of human rights. In the same way, the Inter-American Human Rights System has given greater visibility to migratory issues. I therefore discuss these mutual incorporations (of human rights into migrations and of the latter into human rights) from the perspective of the role of the state, both at the international and domestic level, and the effects of the legal determinations and their incompatibilities. The article concludes by showing that human rights were constructed precisely for movement and that their recent and mutual incorporation is due to the encounter of the emancipatory and regulatory logics of the paradigm of Modernity. Therefore, referring to migration with human rights neither changes nor challenges its starting points and so we should think in terms of a regional policy of the human right to migrate. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar se a recente humanização das legislações e das políticas migratórias na América Latina nos permite falar de uma nova era das migrações em nossa região. De fato, os processos de integração, os consultivos regionais em migração, as políticas e as legislações nacionais na região têm se dirigido, nos últimos anos, a um entendimento desses processos em termos de direitos humanos. Da mesma forma, o sistema interamericano de direitos humanos tem dado maior visibilidade às questões migratórias. Em seguida, discuto essas mútuas incorporações (dos direitos humanos nas migrações e destas nos direitos humanos) a partir do papel do Estado, tanto no âmbito internacional quanto no nacional, e os efeitos das determinações legais e suas incompatibilidades. O texto conclui mostrando que os direitos humanos foram construídos precisamente para o movimento e que sua recente e mútua incorporação se deve ao encontro das lógicas emancipatórias e regulatórias do paradigma da modernidade. Portanto, referir a migração com direitos humanos não muda nem questiona seus pontos de partida; além disso, devemos pensar numa política regional do direito humano a migrar.     Active learning has been successfully applied to a number of NLP tasks. In this paper, we present a study on Information Extraction for natural language licenses that need to be translated to RDF. The final purpose of our work is to automatically extract from a natural language document specifying a certain license a machine-readable description of the terms of use and reuse identified in such license. This task presents some peculiarities that make it specially interesting to study: highly repetitive text, few annotated or unannotated examples available, and very fine precision needed.In this paper we compare different active learning settings for this particular application. We show that the most straightforward approach to instance selection, uncertainty sampling, does not provide a good performance in this setting, performing even worse than passive learning. Density-based methods are the usual alternative to uncertainty sampling, in contexts with very few labelled instances. We show that we can obtain a similar effect to that of density-based methods using uncertainty sampling, by just reversing the ranking criterion, and choosing the most certain instead of the most uncertain instances. acceptedVersion Fil: Cardellino, Cristian Adrián.     Written mathematical notation conveys, in a compact visual form, the nested functional relations among abstract concepts such as operators, numbers or sets. Is the comprehension of mathematical expressions derived from the human capacity for processing the recursive structure of language? Or does algebraic processing rely only on a language-independent network, jointly involving the visual system for parsing the string of mathematical symbols and the intraparietal system for representing numbers and operators? We tested these competing hypotheses by scanning mathematically trained adults while they viewed simple strings ranging from randomly arranged characters to mathematical expressions with up to three levels of nested parentheses. Syntactic effects were observed in behavior and in brain activation measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magneto-encephalography (MEG). Bilateral occipito-temporal cortices and right parietal and precentral cortices appeared as the primary nodes for mathematical syntax. MEG estimated that a mathematical expression could be parsed by posterior visual regions in less than 180. ms. Nevertheless, a small increase in activation with increasing expression complexity was observed in linguistic regions of interest, including the left inferior frontal gyrus and the posterior superior temporal sulcus. We suggest that mathematical syntax, although arising historically from language competence, becomes "compiled" into visuo-spatial areas in well-trained mathematics students. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.     Authors: Saab, Andres;

    <p>I show that core implicit subjects in Spanish (i.e., the ones that occur with analytical passives, impersonal <em>se</em>, and causatives) can be derived from a theory under which absence of <em>Merge</em> in external subject position is a possible syntactic output. Core implicit arguments then have no syntactic representation (<em>pace</em> Landau 2010). Absence of <em>Merge</em> can make to arise two different scenarios: (i) a conflict at the interfaces, which requires the implementation of some repair strategy, (ii) no conflict at the interfaces; i.e., a legitimate object at the interfaces. The first scenario is illustrated with reference to the so-called impersonal <em>se</em> in Spanish, and the second one with reference to analytical passives. The proposed system is able to capture a set of very intricate facts that does not have a satisfactory solution hitherto. Crucially, this particular view on implicit arguments, together with a purely syntactic theory of argument structure, derives the full distribution of impersonals and reflexives in <em>hacer</em> ‘to make’ causative contexts. Finally, it is shown that the arbitrary readings that the two scenarios above described display have a different source: whereas impersonal <em>se</em> requires (costly) default computation at the interface, arbitrary interpretations in analytical passives are calculated at the <em>v</em>P level. </p>
