    This presentation is focused on radar down-streaming applications designed for cultural heritage as part of previous or ongoing research activities of the Cyprus University of Technology. The study initially presents the broader context regarding systematic monitoring and the need for earth observation products for heritage applications. Then, a short overview of the space programme and recent trends are highlighted, especially the use of big data. The presentation is then focused on specific examples and studies of SAR applications for cultural heritage using down-streaming services such as the use of integrated Sentinel-1 and Sentinel- 2 for the detection of archaeological proxies, the use of the Hybrid Pluggable Processing Pipeline (HyP3) cloud-based system of NASA Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) for detecting displacements within archaeological sites in Cyprus after a 5.6 Magnitude scale earthquake event. Furthermore, results from a study dealing with monitoring vertical sprawl in Cyprus using Google Earth Engine and Sentinel-1 are demonstrated. Further results are shown for rapid mapping after technological accidents near heritage sites and exploiting the recently released European Ground Motion Service (EGMS). The presentation ends with a general discussion and future steps.

    The thesis will focus on several infills of spoliated soil and material from the recent excavations on the Forum of Caesar. As a result of the excavation in a domus terrinee (Fig. 1), infills of dark, muddy soils with little to no material was attending between layers with a high concentration of Late Roman material (4th-6th centuries AD). Both infills are dated between the 9th and 10th centuries AD based on Medieval ceramics found within. This study investigates spoliation as a secondary context occurring in a contemporary Medieval setting. On this basis, three methodological approaches have been chosen as part of the interdisciplinary studies of the Danish-Italian investigations on the Forum of Caesar. With a combination of traditional archaeological investigations, soil examinations and digital analysis, this study seeks to understand the impact of spoliation, on the basis of soil formation and archaeological remains. From these analyses it can be concluded that the reoccurring Dark Earth formation has been caused based on the impact of floods or severe water flow, yet also due to spoliation of soil. The archaeological remains are also evidence of a more specific reuse of material remains. Moreover, it has become clear that what can be observed in the profiles (e.g., Dark Earth and material) does not constitute a specific phase of flooding, such require the results of the micromorphological analysis. This study of spoliation offers great insight into the resources available and used in the Medieval period.

    MCur (Statistics), North-West University, Mahikeng Campus Many debt collection companies need to rely on research focusing on data analysis methods that can assist them to analyse their unstructured data which holds information that could help them to better assign their collection agents to high repayment probable accounts. These types of accounts are characterised by the debtor’s ability to repay which comprise their employment status among many other driving factors. Unfortunately, analysing unstructured data is extremely challenging as it comes in natural forms such as audio recordings, videos and images, to mention a few. The aim of this study was to seek for data analysis methods that can accurately predict the employment status of the debtor using audio call recordings. Transcription of the recordings to text was done using Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), followed by data cleaning and the transcribed text was represented in numerical form using the Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF- IDF) and the Count Vectorizer. The study then compared the accuracy of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Naïve Bayes classifiers in predicting the employment status of the debtor. To evaluate the performance of the ASR transcription method, word error rate (WER) was used, for text and to compare ANN and Naïve Bayes, the accuracy, recall and F1-Score were used. An overall WER of 106.93 was archived by the speech recognition ASR method. ANN with TF-IDF was identified as the best model for predicting employment status from transcribed audio recordings. This thesis discusses the lithic technological change in Grassridge Rockshelter, a multi-component site located in the interior region of the Eastern Cape of South Africa that presents a rich high-resolution stratigraphy that interchanges with periods of hiatuses between the Late Pleistocene (LP) dated to about ~43ka, Terminal Pleistocene (TP) dated to ~13ka and Mid-Holocene (MH) occupations dated to ~7ka. The similarities and differences between the LP and TP as well as the TP and MH lithic assemblages are analysed to better understand the behaviours of toolmakers. The analyses use raw material type choices and numerous lithic tool typologies as proxies to track lithic variability. Also considered in this study are tool traits that include platform treatment, external platform angle, platform thickness, early/late debitage exploitation, length over width ratio, profile, and width over thickness ratio. The frequencies of each tool trait are arranged into Tostevin's (2012) methodology system of knapping behaviours to consider various explanations – environmental, economic, and sociocultural- for these variations.

    MEd (Curriculum Studies, North-West University, Vanderbijlpark) Campus Historical thinking allows an individual to understand the past by analysing and evaluating sources. These skills are not only critical in the discipline of history, but it also emphasises critical thinking to ensure a deeper inquiry and interpretation of the past. This study aimed to explore the factors that influence historical thinking and how these factors relate to self-directed learning and higher-order levels of historical thinking with first-year Senior and Further Education and Training (Sr. & FET) History for Education students. To reach the aim of the study, a qualitative exploratory case study was employed. This exploratory case study focused on the relationship between historical thinking and self-directed learning within the lived experiences within the case of first-year Sr. & FET History for Education students at the North-West University. Three data sets were collected for the empirical study. Data were collected in the form of two documents and two 45-60 minute online semi-structured interviews with each of the participants. The two documents were two essay assessments from each of the first-year student participants that completed the first year, first-semester module (HISE112) at the North-West University on the Vanderbijlpark and Mahikeng campuses. The audio of the interviews was transcribed verbatim and analysed using an inductive thematic data analysis. Both documents were analysed by means of summative content analysis. With the data analyses, the researcher found that the participants’ conceptual level of historical thinking mostly aligned with the theoretical concepts. With the application of historical thinking, the participants’ application did not align with most of the historical thinking concepts, pointing to a low level of historical thinking skills. The only historical thinking concepts that improved throughout the semester were taking historical perspectives and establishing historical significance. This improvement was due to the feedback that was provided by the lecturer on the first assignment. The participants also only improved in identifying these concepts from secondary sources, pointing to a lack of originality in creating their own interpretations. The participants’ lack of originality was also highlighted by mostly being influenced by external factors in forming not only their perceptions of the different historical thinking concepts but also their perceptions of history in general. The participants were also externally influenced regarding their self-directed learning process. The participants relied on the lecturer to evaluate their work. Only after receiving feedback from the lecturer, did the participants fulfil the rest of the steps in the self-directed learning process. The dependent nature of the participants to form perceptions and to be guided on what to improve in their learning points to a serious lack of independence in interpreting history and in their learning process. The participants were only consumers of information and did not understand why and how they understood the information that they consumed, pointing to a clear lack of micro- reflection or metacognition. The factor in self-directed learning that may improve historical thinking was independence, more specifically independently creating information based on metacognition. By only understating a concept to its fullest extent, can an individual independently reach the highest level relating to that specific concept. Only once participants’ lack of understanding was pointed out by the lecturer, did they manage to take the first steps in the self-directed learning process. The result was a marginal improvement with the second essay assignment. Masters

    Cultural assets of historical value need to be holistically documented to ensure their long-term preservation. A key component of the holistic docu-mentation of a cultural heritage object is the materials’ characterization by means of analytical techniques. In this work we have employed non-invasive analytical techniques (x-ray fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy and computed tomography) for the study of three ceramic zoomorphic rhyta, belonging to the museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides located at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foun-dation in Nicosia, Cyprus. The plain ware rhyta in the form of a he-goat are dating to the Hellenistic period (310-30 B.C). We have used non-invasive portable XRF and Raman spectroscopy for the in situ chemical characterization of color traces preserved at the surface of the three zoomorphic rhyta. In addition, we have em-ployed Computed Tomography (CT) as a non-invasive method to investigate the manufacturing technique of the ceramics. CT was used to visualize manufactur-ing details and to provide the accurate profiles of the ceramics, especially of the closed shapes. CT enabled a closer examination of the objects and generated a three-dimensional (3D) digital model of the artefacts which was used to replicate them using additive manufacturing (3D printing).

    Authors: Agapiou, Athos;
