In this thesis I present a human history of the diffusion of the phenomenon of public banking in late-medieval and early modern Europe (1350–1650), with a focus on the sixteenth and early-seventeenth century. The adjective ‘human’ symbolizes a shift away from a canon composed solely of a selection of banks considered public de jure, despite the absence of a clear-cut definition, in favour of a comprehensive re-consideration of banks, proposals and unsuccessful projects from almost every corner of early modern Europe, and of the interplay between those who proposed, designed, requested, transferred technical knowledge for, evaluated and, ultimately, decided whether to implement them. Based on the discovery of three previously unknown public banks, the consideration of thirty-three projects and the re-appraisal of ten banks regarded by de facto public banks in literature, I challenge the existing orthodoxy which portrays the diffusion of the phenomenon of public banking as a stepping-stone path of very loosely related experimentations mostly limited to economically vibrant cities and established through impersonal decontextualised initiatives. Instead, I show how the diffusion of the phenomenon of public banking was substantially unitary and grounded on the perception of public banking as a ‘ready solution’, the existence of precise mechanisms for the acquisition of technical knowledge and a shift from municipal collective initiatives to individual initiatives as an engine of diffusion. I start from the analysis of the inherent ambiguity of the definition (Introduction) to then proceed to frame the appearance of a via catalana and a via italiana to public banking practices in the fifteenth century (Ch. 1), shape a case-study in municipal resilience through the portrayal of the activities of the understudied Taula of Barcelona under the reign of Charles V (Ch. 2), pinpoint the institutionalised pattern of transfer of technical knowledge behind the capillary diffusion of the taula-model in the Spanish Empire under Philip II (Ch. 3), examine the intertwined paths that led to the establishment of public banks in Europe between the 1580s–1650s starting from a Spanish perspective (Ch. 4) and, ultimately, identify the main trends and characters of a ‘transition period’ wedged between early fifteenth-century attempts and the advent of banks of issue and financiers in the second half of the seventeenth century (Ch. 5). Ultimately, these reconsiderations provide a new evolutionary metaphor for pre-1650s public banks, namely, as neither proto-central banks, nor true central banks, nor a primordial soup of undefined inorganic building blocks and unformed conglomerates, but as neanderthalensis. In essence, they ought to be considered a species in their own right.

The quantification of visual aesthetics and complexity have a long history, the latter previously operationalized via the application of compression algorithms. Here we generalize and extend the compression approach beyond simple complexity measures to quantify algorithmic distance in historical and contemporary visual media. The proposed "ensemble" approach works by compressing a large number of transformed versions of a given input image, resulting in a vector of associated compression ratios. This approach is more efficient than other compression-based algorithmic distances, and is particularly suited for the quantitative analysis of visual artifacts, because human creative processes can be understood as algorithms in the broadest sense. Unlike comparable image embedding methods using machine learning, our approach is fully explainable through the transformations. We demonstrate that the method is cognitively plausible and fit for purpose by evaluating it against human complexity judgments, and on automated detection tasks of authorship and style. We show how the approach can be used to reveal and quantify trends in art historical data, both on the scale of centuries and in rapidly evolving contemporary NFT art markets. We further quantify temporal resemblance to disambiguate artists outside the documented mainstream from those who are deeply embedded in Zeitgeist. Finally, we note that compression ensembles constitute a quantitative representation of the concept of visual family resemblance, as distinct sets of dimensions correspond to shared visual characteristics otherwise hard to pin down. Our approach provides a new perspective for the study of visual art, algorithmic image analysis, and quantitative aesthetics more generally.

In this two-part paper, we review, and then develop, the assessment of the hole argument for general relativity. This first Part reviews the literature hitherto, focussing on the philosophical aspects. It also introduces two main ideas we will need in Part II: which will propose a framework for making comparisons of non-isomorphic spacetimes. In Section 1 of this paper, we recall Einstein's original argument. Section 2 recalls the argument's revival by philosophers in the 1980s and 1990s. This includes the first main idea we will need in Part II: namely, that two spacetime points in different possible situations are never strictly identical -- they are merely counterparts. In Section 3, we report -- and rebut -- more recent claims to "dissolve" the argument. Our rebuttal is based on the fact that in differential geometry, and its applications in physics such as general relativity, points are in some cases identified, or correspond with each other, between one context and another, by means other than isometry (or isomorphism). We call such a correspondence a threading of points. This is the second main idea we shall use in Part II. Comment: 31 pages

In this two-part paper we review, and then develop, the assessment of the hole argument for general relativity. The review (in Part I) discussed how to compare points in isomorphic spacetimes, i.e. models of the theory. This second Part proposes a framework for making comparisons of {\em non}-isomorphic spacetimes. It combines two ideas we discussed in Part I -- the philosophical idea of counterparts, and the idea of threading points between spacetimes other than by isomorphism -- with the mathematics of fibre bundles. We first recall the ideas from Part I (Section 1). Then in Section 2 and an Appendix, we define a fibre bundle whose fibres are isomorphic copies of a given spacetime or model, and discuss connections on this fibre bundle. This material proceeds on analogy with field-space formulations of gauge theories. Finally, in Section 3, we show how this fibre bundle gives natural expressions of the philosophical ideas of counterparts, and of threading. Comment: 22 pages, 8 page appendix

This article explores confirmation as a ritual of Christian initiation in the context of the English Reformation. It examines how this rite of passage, which was demoted from its traditional status as a sacrament, survived and evolved in the wake of the theological, liturgical and ecclesiological changes associated with the advent of Protestantism. It traces the permutations of the practice of laying on of hands that both united and fractured people within the Church of England and its evangelical outer rings between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. It also considers the social history of a ritual that increasingly coincided with the transition from childhood to puberty, and its capacity to shed light on the formation of collective religious identity, bodily habitus and lived experience. Finally, it briefly discusses the Counter-Reformation of confirmation and its transformation into a marker of the confessional militancy of a minority faith.

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years. Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants.
