In recent years, the term “trauma” has become one of the keywords of Western culture. When a person or a group goes through an experience that seems to shatter the foundations of their lives, its use seems to impose itself as if it were a pristine and self-evident idea. Subjectivities constructed around a past event that continues in the present, or peoples that today experience the present consequences (all too present) of past sufferings; in both spheres, the notion of trauma is called upon to explain a particular alteration of memory and mental functioning, becoming one of the categories derived from “psy” discourses most embraced by contemporary thought. Despite the widespread use of pre-trained models in NLP, well-performing pre-trained models for low-resource languages are scarce. To address this issue, we propose two novel BERT models for the Luxembourgish language that improve on the state of the art. We also present an empirical study on both the performance and robustness of the investigated BERT models. We compare the models on a set of downstream NLP tasks and evaluate their robustness against different types of data perturbations. Additionally, we provide novel datasets to evaluate the performance of Luxembourgish language models. Our findings reveal that pre-training a pre-loaded model has a positive effect on both the performance and robustness of fine-tuned models and that using the German GottBERT model yields a higher performance while the multilingual mBERT results in a more robust model. This study provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners working with low-resource languages and highlights the importance of considering pre-training strategies when building language models.

In early modern Europe information circulated in the form of regular manuscript newsletters. However, most of the once existing news sheets did not survive. This study will present novel methods (random sampling with replacement, aka bootstrapping, and Bayesian statistics) to harness this lost corpus and to analyze its gender dimensions.

This contribution focuses on the dissemination of mythLOD data. Two visualisations have been developed to represent the relations between museal and bibliographic sources preserved in the Knowledge Base. mythLOD is presented as a case study to highlight that the visualisation of narratives is not just a matter of interface, but a new service to acquire new knowledge from data.

This paper develops a mode of ranking the impact of cut-points and their removal in network analysis, considering the extent to which fragmentation and disruption can be intrepreted as new measures of power, and applying experiments to an epistolary network at the Tudor court to demonstrate potential historical application.

In 1961, the Eichmann trial opened in Jerusalem, and its worldwide resonance through media coverage questioned the collective conscience about responsibility for Nazi crimes. German philosopher Hannah Arendt attended the process as a special correspondent for the U.S. magazine The New Yorker. Her Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (1963) caused a great scandal: the author advanced the brazen idea of collective co-responsibility for Nazi crimes, reporting the identikit of a standard bureaucrat, a seemingly ordinary man, just like any one of us. Almost sixty years after its publication, this study adopts a primarily psycho(patho)logical perspective to reflect once again on the considerations Arendt shared in the Banality of Evil. In showing the multiple facets of banality, the research investigates recent results in the analysis of the criminal mind in order to shed light on the etiology of evil.
