    Thermal stress on the biosphere during the extreme warmth of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was most severe at low latitudes, with sea surface temperatures at some localities exceeding the 35 ◦C at which marine organisms experience heat stress. Relatively few equivalent terrestrial sections have been identified, and the response of land plants to this extreme heat is still poorly understood. Here, we present a new record of the PETM from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater that has been identified based on nannofossil biostratigraphy, an acme of the dinoflagellate genus Apectodinium, and a negative carbon isotope excursion. Geochemical and microfossil proxies show that the PETM is marked by elevated TEXH 86-based sea surface temperatures (SSTs) averaging ∼ 37.8 ◦C, an in crease in terrestrial input and surface productivity, salinity stratification, and bottom water anoxia, with biomarkers for green and purple sulfur bacteria indicative of photic zone euxinia in the early part of the event. Pollen and plants spores in this core provide the first PETM floral assemblage described from Mexico, Central America, and the northern Caribbean. The source area was a diverse coastal shrubby tropical forest with a remarkably high abundance of fungal spores, indicating humid conditions. Thus, while seafloor anoxia devastated the benthic marine biota and dinoflagellate assemblages were heat-stressed, the terrestrial plant ecosystem thrived.     The early Miocene of Patagonia (Argentina) provides one of the best-known records of odontocetes for an age interval with scarce fossils. Most of these taxa are historically old and briefly described, which has contributed, in part, to their controversial taxonomic position. The shark-toothed dolphin Phoberodon arctirostris was described almost 100 years ago and suggested as a member of Platanistoidea and Squalodontidae. However, it has not been analysed recently and has never been included in a phylogenetic analysis. Recent fieldwork in the early Miocene sediments in Patagonia yielded a new specimen referred to this species, allowing for its modern and detailed description and the first phylogenetic analyses. Analyses recovered P. arctirostris as a stem Odontoceti or an early-diverging platanistoid, more closely related to an unnamed Oligocene specimen from New Zealand and not in a clade with Squalodon calvertensis (i.e. Squalodontidae). The reconstructed body length of P. arctirostris indicates that it is one of the largest stem Odontoceti. Our results suggest that during the early Miocene of Patagonia, archaic odontocete forms (i.e. P. arctirostris) cohabited with archaic and more crownward platanistoids (i.e. Aondelphis talen and Notocetus vanbenedeni), helping to characterize the early Miocene cetacean communities of Patagonia.     Water availability is fundamental to societies and ecosystems, but our understanding of variations 55 in hydroclimate (includingextreme events, flooding, and decadal periods of drought) is limited because of a paucity of modern instrumental observationsthat are distributed unevenly across the globe and only span parts of the 20th and 21st centuries. Such data coverage isinsufficient for characterizing hydroclimate and its associated dynamics because of its multidecadal-to-centennial variability andhighly regionalized spatial signature. High-resolution (seasonal to decadal) hydroclimatic proxies that span all or parts of the60 Common Era (CE) and paleoclimate model simulations are therefore important tools for augmenting our understanding ofhydroclimate variability. In particular, the comparison of the two sources of information is critical for addressing theuncertainties and limitations of both, while enriching each of their interpretations. We review the principal proxy data availablefor hydroclimatic reconstructions over the CE and highlight contemporary understanding of how these proxies are interpreted ashydroclimate indicators. We also review the available last-millennium simulations from fully-coupled climate models and65 discuss several outstanding challenges associated with simulating hydroclimate variability and change over the CE. A specificreview of simulated hydroclimatic changes forced by volcanic events is provided, as well as a discussion of expectedimprovements in estimated forcings, models and their implementation in the future. Our review of hydroclimatic proxies andlast-millennium model simulations is used as the basis for articulating a variety of considerations and best practices for how toperform proxy-model comparisons of CE hydroclimate. This discussion provides a framework for how best to evaluate70 hydroclimate variability and its associated dynamics using these comparisons, as well as how they can better informinterpretations of both proxy data and model simulations. We subsequently explore means of using proxy-model comparisonsto better constrain and characterize future hydroclimate risks. This is explored specifically in the context of several examplesthat demonstrate how proxy-model comparisons can be used to quantitatively constrain future hydroclimatic risks as estimatedfrom climate model projections.     Thermal stress on the biosphere during the extreme warmth of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was most severe at low latitudes, with sea surface temperatures at some localities exceeding the 35 ◦C at which marine organisms experience heat stress. Relatively few equivalent terrestrial sections have been identified, and the response of land plants to this extreme heat is still poorly understood. Here, we present a new record of the PETM from the peak ring of the Chicxulub impact crater that has been identified based on nannofossil biostratigraphy, an acme of the dinoflagellate genus Apectodinium, and a negative carbon isotope excursion. Geochemical and microfossil proxies show that the PETM is marked by elevated TEXH 86-based sea surface temperatures (SSTs) averaging ∼ 37.8 ◦C, an in crease in terrestrial input and surface productivity, salinity stratification, and bottom water anoxia, with biomarkers for green and purple sulfur bacteria indicative of photic zone euxinia in the early part of the event. Pollen and plants spores in this core provide the first PETM floral assemblage described from Mexico, Central America, and the northern Caribbean. The source area was a diverse coastal shrubby tropical forest with a remarkably high abundance of fungal spores, indicating humid conditions. Thus, while seafloor anoxia devastated the benthic marine biota and dinoflagellate assemblages were heat-stressed, the terrestrial plant ecosystem thrived.     The early Miocene of Patagonia (Argentina) provides one of the best-known records of odontocetes for an age interval with scarce fossils. Most of these taxa are historically old and briefly described, which has contributed, in part, to their controversial taxonomic position. The shark-toothed dolphin Phoberodon arctirostris was described almost 100 years ago and suggested as a member of Platanistoidea and Squalodontidae. However, it has not been analysed recently and has never been included in a phylogenetic analysis. Recent fieldwork in the early Miocene sediments in Patagonia yielded a new specimen referred to this species, allowing for its modern and detailed description and the first phylogenetic analyses. Analyses recovered P. arctirostris as a stem Odontoceti or an early-diverging platanistoid, more closely related to an unnamed Oligocene specimen from New Zealand and not in a clade with Squalodon calvertensis (i.e. Squalodontidae). The reconstructed body length of P. arctirostris indicates that it is one of the largest stem Odontoceti. Our results suggest that during the early Miocene of Patagonia, archaic odontocete forms (i.e. P. arctirostris) cohabited with archaic and more crownward platanistoids (i.e. Aondelphis talen and Notocetus vanbenedeni), helping to characterize the early Miocene cetacean communities of Patagonia.     Water availability is fundamental to societies and ecosystems, but our understanding of variations 55 in hydroclimate (includingextreme events, flooding, and decadal periods of drought) is limited because of a paucity of modern instrumental observationsthat are distributed unevenly across the globe and only span parts of the 20th and 21st centuries. Such data coverage isinsufficient for characterizing hydroclimate and its associated dynamics because of its multidecadal-to-centennial variability andhighly regionalized spatial signature. High-resolution (seasonal to decadal) hydroclimatic proxies that span all or parts of the60 Common Era (CE) and paleoclimate model simulations are therefore important tools for augmenting our understanding ofhydroclimate variability. In particular, the comparison of the two sources of information is critical for addressing theuncertainties and limitations of both, while enriching each of their interpretations. We review the principal proxy data availablefor hydroclimatic reconstructions over the CE and highlight contemporary understanding of how these proxies are interpreted ashydroclimate indicators. We also review the available last-millennium simulations from fully-coupled climate models and65 discuss several outstanding challenges associated with simulating hydroclimate variability and change over the CE. A specificreview of simulated hydroclimatic changes forced by volcanic events is provided, as well as a discussion of expectedimprovements in estimated forcings, models and their implementation in the future. Our review of hydroclimatic proxies andlast-millennium model simulations is used as the basis for articulating a variety of considerations and best practices for how toperform proxy-model comparisons of CE hydroclimate. This discussion provides a framework for how best to evaluate70 hydroclimate variability and its associated dynamics using these comparisons, as well as how they can better informinterpretations of both proxy data and model simulations. We subsequently explore means of using proxy-model comparisonsto better constrain and characterize future hydroclimate risks.
