The archive "Immovable Cultural Assets" at the Regional History Museum – Sofia contains 1300 documentation folders of buildings, bridges and monuments located in the centеr of the city. Currently, all folders have their own digital copies - text in MS Word file and original old photos, mainly from the 70s and 80s of the last century, with corresponding image from current time. Plans and sketches of the surrounding landscape are attached as well. However, the focus of the digital unit is not on the architectural ensemble and urban planning, but for the historical reference for the person or event related to the particular monument. Through various methods of work, an attempt was made to preserve part of the history of the city - preserving its memory in digital format. Тhey consisted digitalization of the paper folder, collecting information in two various ways: at the libraries, archives and in the field – by describing and photographing the monument.

The paper presents for the first time the imports of Spanish lustreware in Bulgaria. For a long time such ware remained neglected probably because there have been very few finds usually representing an insignificant segment of the ceramic assemblages from medieval settlements. However, to assume a supply of western goods is more than reasonable given the wide trade contacts of the Tarnovo Tsardom and the Dobrudzha Despotate during the 14th c., and the dominant role of the Italian maritime republics in the Black Sea trading region. The targeted search for Spanish imports in several museum collections confirmed their presence in six settlements along the Black Sea coast: Sozopol, Varna, Kastritsi, Kaliakra, the fortresses of Rusokastro and Petrich near Varna. The pottery included in the paper illustrates the 14th to 15th c. imports of the following well known in the European studies subgroups of Valencian production: loza valenciana malagueňa dorada y azul; loza valenciana dorada Pula; loza valenciana dorada clasicá. The presence of some 16th c. post-Valencian products, most probably originating from the workshops of Muel, Saragossa, is also suggested. Most of the examined finds show that Iberian imports, even though just a few, reached Bulgaria between the 1330s and the late 15th c., most likely due to Italian merchants. Numerous written sources prove that the main reason for the active policy followed by Genoa and Venice was the export of cheap cereals and raw materials. There is no explicit information about the import of ceramics but given the connections of the two maritime republics with Spanish ports, especially the Genoese ones, it can be assumed that they supplied luxury lustreware to both Bulgarian lands and cities on the North Black Sea coast.

In the course of rescue archaeological excavations of site 1/1000 at Baba Velika locality, located at the foot of Vrashka chuka in Northwest Bulgaria, the remains of an Early Iron Age site were encountered. This paper is focused on the pottery assemblage found during the rescue archaeological excavations at Vrashka chuka. The study presents the main characteristic of the Early Iron Age pottery found in the features and the general characteristics of the pottery found in the Early Iron Age cultural layer. It also discusses the recognizable shapes and decorative motifs and points out synchronous parallels. The study of the pottery assemblage from Vrashka chuka provided us with the opportunity to shed a new light on the development of the Early Iron Age in Northwest Bulgaria, and especially the district of the modern city of Vidin. The intensive archaeological excavations in recent years have opened a new page in the studies of the Early Iron Age in this part of Bulgaria, which so far was not studied in details.

The analyzed pottery artefacts derive from vessels from ritual structures and from urns from a necropolis located near the village of Dubene, Karlovo Minicipality. The ritual structures are dated to the Early Bronze Age (EBA) III, while the cemetery is dated to the EBA II.All pottery artefacts are studied by optical (petrographic) and XRD analyses. The obtained data indicate that the most of the samples have similar mineralogy. The observed rock and mineral inclusions suggest local origin of the raw material, taking into account the composition of the rocks in the surroundings of the Dubene site. Some differences in terms of technology have been found.Based on the mineral composition and the XRD study, the firing temperature of the pottery is above 550°C.The analyzed white encrustation proved to be apatite, made most probably of bone matter.

Excavations at Hacılar Büyük Höyük, which is located 27 km to the southwest of Burdur, began in 2011 under my direction and are still in progress. The pre-planned, “sawtooth”-shaped defence system surrounds the settlement along the western slope like a necklace. The first of the two city gates designed to conform to the defence system is the Western Gate, and the other is the Southern Gate. Items found on the floors and in the courtyards of most of the 49 casemates uncovered so far include various kinds of pottery, baked clay, stone seals; idols made of baked clay, marble and other stone types; ‘pubis’ models (?) formed from pebbles; metal finds such as needles, bracelets, spatulas and daggers; bone pins and awls, handles shaped from deer antlers; chipped stone artefacts, grinding stones and tools. This indicates that the buildings that make up the defence system were also used as residences.

The article offers new data on the Neolithisation process in the Struma valley and the Central Balkans based on recent research at the Early Neolithic settlement Ilindentsi in southwestern Bulgaria. The settlement was inhabited during the second half of the Early Neolithic. The stratigraphic analysis points to at least two main periods, which belong respectively to the Early Neolithic (Ilindentsi I) and the Middle Neolithic (Ilindentsi II). The entire ceramic assemblage shows a very smooth transition from the Early to the Middle Neolithic with two transitional stages of the final Early Neolithic – Ilindentsi FEN I and Ilindentsi FEN II.The results of this multidisciplinary study show the complexity of the processes related to the Neolithisation of this part of southeast Europe and the diversity of factors influencing the foundation and development of Ilindentsi, as well as its place in the network of early Neolithic settlements in the Balkans.

At the turn of the 7th millennium cal. BC the European Mesolithic underwent a major transformation in its technical traditions. This break is marked by a complete renewal of the lithic industries, with the disappearance of the production of bladelets (or slim flakes) obtained by direct percussion, used for the shaping of narrow armatures, and the appearance of standardised blades production, obtained by indirect percussion or pressure, used for the manufacture of trapeze armatures or notched blades. This break allows for a clear distinction between the First and Second Mesolithic.Recent work has been undertaken on this question, including collective works in collaborative programs (in particular those undertaken by T. Perrin) and the excavation of sites documenting this period. New analysis offers a fresh look at this key moment of the European Mesolithic. In light of recent evidences gathered in the Cuzoul of Gramat site (where excavations have been resumed since 2005 under the direction of N. Valdeyron), this paper propose to reassess the question of this transition between First and Second Mesolithic.

The field surveys of the area of Pliska – the first Bulgarian capital – are part of the “Development of the Archaeological Map of Bulgaria” project. At the same time, they are a continuation of the long-term development for completion of the Pliska archaeological map, which began in the distant 1899. The creation of the archaeological map of Pliska has a long history and numerous authors. The main goal has always been the registration of visible sites within the Great earthen rampart – the Outer city of Pliska, as well as in the near vicinity of the town. So far intensive field surveys in the Pliska area were conducted in 2010–2012. In 2017, over a period of 25 days, 4 km2 were covered in the eastern, northern and western parts of the Outer city, which has a total area of 23 km2. Seventy six sites - settlements, buildings, building complexes, churches and a necropolis were registered. The common criteria for collecting and classifying information from the survey area set the basis for building an objective picture of the settlement structure of the Outer City of Pliska.

The article discusses three so far unpublished silver cone-shaped elements of horse-trappings found in the tomb near the village of Ruets, Targovishte region. The tomb near the village of Ruets (old Yrukleler), Targovishte region in North-eastern Bulgaria, was discovered by chance in 1925 in the Maljuk mound located in the Kavatsite locality to the southeast of the village. Vasil Mikov excavated the tomb in the same year. According to the available data, a burial was revealed in the tomb, that in turn was under a mound. The grave goods found in the tomb include a bronze Chalcidian type helmet, a bimetal bell cuirass made of bronze and iron, a folding bronze plate (μίτρη) worn together with/under the bell cuirass, an iron short sword – akinakes, two iron spear heads, eleven bronze arrowheads, a bronze amphora-hydria with images of Sirens in the lower parts of the handles, a bronze strainer, a bronze situla, a bronze vessel – podanipter, a bronze buckle, an iron bridle, two bone objects, a glass vessel (aryballos) and a fragment of a red-figured hydria. At present they are stored in the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia. Due to the nature of their discovery, it is unclear whether these are all grave goods to the buried warrior. Tree silver cone-shaped elements of horse-trappings are also among the items mentioned above and they are the subject of the present study.

This article presents pottery from the Еarly and Late Iron Age discovered some time ago in the region of Kozloduy. The Еarly Iron Age is better represented with materials from five sites. The Late Iron Age was registered at two sites. Some sites can be defined as settlements, others as necropolises. On the basis of the pottery characteristics, suggestions about the cultural affiliation and cultural links of the region at the end of 2nd and 1st millennium BC are offered.
