    Funnelling(Fun) is a recently proposed method for cross-lingual text classification (CLTC) based on a two-tier learning ensemble for heterogeneous transfer learning (HTL). In this ensemble method, 1st-tier classifiers, each working on a different and language-dependent feature space, return a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (with one dimension for each class) for each document, and the final classification decision is taken by a meta-classifier that uses this vector as its input. The meta-classifier can thus exploit class-class correlations, and this (among other things) givesFunan edge over CLTC systems in which these correlations cannot be brought to bear. In this article, we describeGeneralized Funnelling(gFun), a generalization ofFunconsisting of an HTL architecture in which 1st-tier components can be arbitraryview-generating functions, i.e., language-dependent functions that each produce a language-independent representation (“view”) of the (monolingual) document. We describe an instance ofgFunin which the meta-classifier receives as input a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (as inFun) aggregated to other embedded representations that embody other types of correlations, such as word-class correlations (as encoded byWord-Class Embeddings), word-word correlations (as encoded byMultilingual Unsupervised or Supervised Embeddings), and word-context correlations (as encoded bymultilingual BERT). We show that this instance ofgFunsubstantially improves overFunand over state-of-the-art baselines by reporting experimental results obtained on two large, standard datasets for multilingual multilabel text classification. Our code that implementsgFunis publicly available.

    Abstract In recent years, a strong effort has been dedicated to the development of tokamak plasma regimes alternative to the standard high confinement mode (H-mode) with type-I edge localized mode (ELM), i.e. ELM-free and small-ELM regimes, given the associated hardly sustainable energy and particle fluxes on plasma facing components. In this work, we will focus on new H-mode regimes with small-ELMs, the so-called baseline small-ELMs (BSE), characterized by high thermal confinement and low core impurity accumulation, which have been recently found at JET. In order to characterize the micro-turbulence at play at the top of the pedestal, an extensive local linear gyrokinetic analysis with the GKW code has been carried out. In particular, a comparison between a reference type-I ELM (#97395) and two BSE plasmas (#96994 and #94442) has been performed. The ion-scale (0.1 ≤ k θ ρ i ≤ 2) micro-turbulence is found to have different characteristics in the two regimes. Indeed, kinetic-ballooning modes (KBM) are destabilized in the type-I ELM regime at k θ ρ i ∼ 0.1, while they are stable in BSE regimes. In addition, negative (i.e. electron-diamagnetic-direction) frequency modes, identified as electron-temperature-gradient (ETG) modes, are destabilized at k θ ρ i ∼ 1.5 in the type-I ELM regime while BSE regimes are characterized by positive (i.e. ion-diamagnetic-direction) frequency modes. Meanwhile, at electron-scale (10 ≤ k θ ρ i ≤ 700) ETG modes are the dominant micro-instabilities in both regimes. Then, since BSE regimes are characterized by a higher impurity concentration at the pedestal, particular attention has been given to the role played by them. We found that impurities represent a critical player in the linear dynamics, strongly affecting the nature of micro-instabilities at ion-scale.

    This paper deals with a UAV LiDAR methodological approach for the identification and extraction of archaeological features under canopy in hilly Mediterranean environments, characterized by complex topography and strong erosion. The presence of trees and undergrowth makes the reconnaissance of archaeological features and remains very difficult, while the erosion, increased by slope, tends to adversely affect the microtopographical features of potential archaeological interest, thus making them hardly identifiable. For the purpose of our investigations, a UAV LiDAR survey has been carried out at Perticara (located in Basilicata southern Italy), an abandoned medieval village located in a geologically fragile area, characterized by complex topography, strong erosion, and a dense forest cover. All of these characteristics pose serious challenge issues and make this site particularly significant and attractive for the setting and testing of an optimal LiDAR-based approach to analyze hilly forested regions searching for subtle archaeological features. The LiDAR based investigations were based on three steps: (i) field data acquisition and data pre-processing, (ii) data post-processing, and (iii) semi-automatic feature extraction method based on machine learning and local statistics. The results obtained from the LiDAR based analyses (successfully confirmed by the field survey) made it possible to identify the lost medieval village that represents an emblematic case of settlement abandoned during the crisis of the late Middle Ages that affected most regions in southern Italy.

    In high momenta range, the construction of a Ring Imaging CHerenkov (RICH) detector for the particle identification at the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC) is a complicated task. A compact collider setup imposes to construct a RICH with a short radiator length, hence limiting the number of photons. The number of photons can be increase by choosing to work in far UV region. However, as standard fused-silica windows are opaque below 165 nm, therefore, a windowless RICH approach could be a possible choice. In the far UV range, CsI is a widely used photo-cathode (PC) to detect photons, but because of its hygroscopic nature, it is very delicate to handle. Its Quantum Efficiency (QE) degrades in high intensity ion fluxes. These are the key reasons to search a novel, less delicate PC with sensitivity in the far UV region. Hydrogenated nanodiamond films are proposed as an alternative PC material and shown to have promising characteristics. The performance of nanodiamond PC coupled to THGEM-based detectors is the objects of our ongoing R & D.The first phase of these studies includes the characterization of THGEMs coated with nanodiamont PC, the comparison of the effective QE in vacuum and in gaseous atmospheres, the hardness respect to the PC bombardment by ions from the multiplication process. The approach is described in detail as well as all the results obtained so far with these exploratory studies.

    X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique employed for elemental analysis of a wide range of materials. Its advantages are especially valued in archaeometry, where portable instruments are available. Considering ancient glass, such instruments allow for the detection of some major, minor, and trace elements linked to the deliberate addition of specific components or to impurities in the raw materials of the glass batch. Besides some undoubted advantages, portable XRF (p-XRF) has some limitations that are addressed in this study. The performance assessment of four different p-XRF units and the reconciling of their output were conducted. The results show the limitations in cross-referencing the data obtained from each unit and suggest procedures to overcome the issues. The p-XRF units were tested on the set of Corning reference glasses and on a small set of archaeological glasses with known composition. The compatibility of the output was assessed using multivariate statistical tools. Such a workflow allows us to consider data from multiple sources in the same frame of reference.

    International audience; An approach to the representation and documentation of craft processes is proposed. The proposed approach is a method for the systematic identification and digital representation of pertinent data, information, and knowledge. The outcome representation is compatible with contemporary digitisation practices and digital preservation standards. The implementation of the approach is provided within the context of an online platform that is accompanied by auxiliary tools for digital curation. This platform is a multiple user system, where craft representations can be collaboratively authored, shared, displayed, and digitally preserved in standardised formats. Basic uses of this scheme and presentational applications are provided, along with identification of future work and limitations.

    For the past 20 years, the community of heritage scientists has frequently exploited the synchrotron radiation-based techniques offered at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble, France [Citation1]. X-ray imaging techniques (in particular, micro computed-tomography, µCT) are regularly employed to probe non-destructively the inner structure of objects and materials. In paleontology, this can offer information on the functioning and evolution of organs and organisms. In addition, analytical techniques such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) are often used, alone or combined, for the chemical analysis of micro-fragments of historical manufactured materials. This can give clues about both the early days of objects (physical and chemical processes used in the production of artworks and the evolution of these skills in time and space) as well as the evolution/alteration of objects (nature of degradation products and environmental factors contributing to these degradations). The limited size of samples and their high heterogeneity often require access to micro and nano-probes. The new capabilities offered by the ESRF upgrade "EBS" (Extremely Brilliant Source), as well as instrumental developments at new and strongly refurbished beamlines, have motivated the organization of a dedicated "EBS-workshop" about cultural and natural heritage, which was held in January 2020 at the ESRF, attracting more than 150 participants, among which were 90 new ESRF users. Most of the talks were broadcast on the ESRF YouTube Channel and are still available (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLsWatK2_NAmyyA0n03OMJMAKobVIvow2D). Through scientific presentations, tutorials, and discussions, the objectives of the workshop were: To illustrate to expert and non-expert users the many capabilities offered by synchrotron radiation-based techniques for the study of natural and cultural heritage materials/objects; To present EBS and the related instrumental developments, highlighting the ground-breaking capabilities that will be offered through the ESRF upgrade phase 2 (thanks to the new source, new beamlines, and new instruments); To present and discuss the upstream and downstream challenges associated with these new instruments (e.g., access models and data analysis, data management...), which are fundamental for making the experiments a success. This was notably a very good opportunity to discuss the implementation of new beamtime access modes. This event has been fundamental in some of the developments detailed in the following.

    If citation is a common practice for publications, it is relatively new for data especially in SSH. This paper will present the work carried out during the SSHOC project about data citation in general and more precisely how to make them actionable. The metaphor of a travel journal of an expedition seemed appropriate to us to present this work carried out during the SSHOC project. The first part was to study this terra incognita by making an inventory of citation practices (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3595965). To summarize, we discovered that in the research communities we investigated, practices were seldom standardized and were very diverse, generally producing citations that could not be processed by machines: in other words they were not “actionable”. This led us to develop a sort of guide necessary to journey through this new, uncharted territory in the form of a set of recommendations ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5361717) to build citations in SSH. So as not to reinvent the wheel, we based these recommendations on existing principles created by Force11 ( https://doi.org/10.25490/a97f-egyk) by adapting them to the specific characteristics of the SSH data. These recommendations were validated by a committee of experts from different backgrounds and structures (RDA participants, CODATA director, OpenAire Engineers etc.) during a round table (https://www.sshopencloud.eu/news/roundtable-experts-data-citation) and in a parallel review process. Then we decided to analyze the resources available in this new territory, that is, the repositories that are so crucial to be able to cite data. We carried out an analysis of 85 repositories against 7 quality criteria based on the recommendations which ensure continuity with the work mentioned above: PID from “Unique Identification & Persistence” Landing page from “Access” Structured metadata from “Importance & Credit and Attribution” Cite as from “Evidence, Specificity & Verifiability” Versioning from “Specificity and Verifiability” Standardized vocabularies from “Interoperability and Flexibility” Links to publications from “Importance” The results of this survey (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5603306) are encouraging - even if there is room for improvement, particularly in the use of Persistent Identifiers. Importantly, the presence of a landing page in almost all cases allowed us to build up a test sample made up of a very diverse dataset from those repositories for which we want to build standardized and actionable citations. In parallel we developed a tool in order to “harvest” the resources found in this new land so as to better understand them and also be able to explain them to others. We developed a prototype composed of three components: a harvester which grabs information about a dataset and normalizes it an API to disseminate the metadata of the citation thereby making it actionable a citation viewer for human purposes For the first iteration to populate this prototype, we used the dataset collected during our survey of repositories and we are going to gradually add more datasets from various sources. This prototype is primarily designed to implement what we called “actionability” to a citation and provide a ready-to-use citation in various citation formats. Starting from the PID of a dataset, the prototype attempts to aggregate metadata from different sources: the repository of the dataset, the PID Registration Agency and a number of Knowledge Graphs. For instance, while metadata associated with a DOI (Digital Object Identifier) are limited and those provided by a handle are even more scarce, it is possible to get more information from a landing page and thus enrich the citation. We also used another indirect approach to gather additional information by using a registry of repositories (RE3Data https://www.re3data.org/) which provides, among other things, information on the available APIs available for a specific repository. Thus the prototype can give a unified view of information about datasets coming from different sources. For researchers, it thus avoids cumbersome work on how to cite a dataset or get information about its provenance. In return, it makes a researcher aware of the importance of properly documenting a dataset and depositing it in a “good” repository. This paper will present in greater detail what we learned at each step of this expedition and how a research project can take advantage of a good citation system to enhance the visibility of the output. We will also introduce the potential uses based on the information provided by the prototype such as the possibility of associating a specific tool to process data or the use of this information as a base to build data papers.

    We are assisting today to the increased need of web-based Integrated solutions in and for Cultural Heritage. This presentation will offer a national overview on the different activities in the field of Cultural Heritage that are increasingly requiring the use of the network, from the design of interactive media to field acquisition (i.e. in archaeological sites), from data analysis and simulation to 3d model semantic annotation, from collaboration in virtual environments to web3d applications for museums and monuments. Example of recent tools, services and applications will be provided (as for Aton, Emviq, 3D Hop and Movida). The challenges and potentialities offered by infrastructural projects such as ERIHS will be set as the turning point that will lead, in the next decade, to new Data Spaces, CH research National Cloud and CH Italian digital library.

    Abstract In NIO1, a compact H- ion source installed at RFX operated in continuous mode, gas conditioning was needed to improve results in Cs-free regimes (up to a current density about 25 or 30 A/m2). Installation of a cesium oven gave an additional increase of current, progressively limited also by a rapid overcesiation: we observed an average density about 50 A/m2 (with a peak of 67 A/m2). Obtained beam optics is briefly compared with simulations and previous results in the Cs-free regime in similar conditions (as source voltage, often set below or equal 11 kV). In both regimes, central beamlet apparent density is larger, possibly because of a narrow bias plate mask, now enlarged. Further improvements for Cs-based regime include a moderate oven reservoir temperature, careful tuning and a substantial increase of beam voltage, and power handling capability.

    Funnelling(Fun) is a recently proposed method for cross-lingual text classification (CLTC) based on a two-tier learning ensemble for heterogeneous transfer learning (HTL). In this ensemble method, 1st-tier classifiers, each working on a different and language-dependent feature space, return a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (with one dimension for each class) for each document, and the final classification decision is taken by a meta-classifier that uses this vector as its input. The meta-classifier can thus exploit class-class correlations, and this (among other things) givesFunan edge over CLTC systems in which these correlations cannot be brought to bear. In this article, we describeGeneralized Funnelling(gFun), a generalization ofFunconsisting of an HTL architecture in which 1st-tier components can be arbitraryview-generating functions, i.e., language-dependent functions that each produce a language-independent representation (“view”) of the (monolingual) document. We describe an instance ofgFunin which the meta-classifier receives as input a vector of calibrated posterior probabilities (as inFun) aggregated to other embedded representations that embody other types of correlations, such as word-class correlations (as encoded byWord-Class Embeddings), word-word correlations (as encoded byMultilingual Unsupervised or Supervised Embeddings), and word-context correlations (as encoded bymultilingual BERT). We show that this instance ofgFunsubstantially improves overFunand over state-of-the-art baselines by reporting experimental results obtained on two large, standard datasets for multilingual multilabel text classification. Our code that implementsgFunis publicly available.
