    What connects the sci-fi book Dune with coastal dunes and geoengineering? The answer lies in humans and their world-making activities. This paper proposes an innovative approach to coastal dunes as hybrid environments by analyzing the dunes stabilization programs developed on the US Pacific Coast. It looks into the shifting sands of the Oregon coast and how they influenced Frank Herbert to write his novel, why local communities and federal authorities were interested in fixing the moving dunes and how these works ended up having unexpected consequences. It explores how human features acting as forcing mechanisms on beach-dune systems caused changes that turned into controlling influences in their own right, creating new environments and concerns. The paper ends with a reflection on how fiction and the history of dunes can be used to critically think about the anthropocentric hubris of building futures by geoengineering the planet for environmental repair.

    This repository includes two datasets used in Ranghetti et al. (2018) and Ranghetti & Boschetti (2022) to analyse the magnitude of a decreasing trend in the extent of submerged rice paddies during the rice-sowing period in the Italian rice district: methods used to generate these data from MODIS remote sensing imagery are described in these papers. ffavg_2021.csv: this dataset includes values of yearly FFavg (averaged Flooding Fraction) at pixel level. Each record represent the FFavg value of a specific pixel in a specific year. x and y identifies the latitude and longitude of each record (in UTM32 coordinates); subdistrict represent the sub-district ID of each pixel ("A" to "G"); year is the year whose each record refers to; ff is the FFavg value (range 0-1); count is the number of MODIS images used to generate each FFavg aggregated value. ws_2021.csv: this dataset includes values of WS (proportion of Water-Seeded rice surface) at sub-district and district levels. subdistrict represent the sub-district ID of each record ("A" to "G", plus "all" which identifies values aggregated at district level); year is the year whose each record refers to; ws is the WS value (range 0-1); count is the number of pixels used to generate each WS aggregated record.     Vent opening hazard models are routinely used as inputs for assessing distal volcanic hazards (lava flows, tephra fallout) in distributed volcanic fields. These vent opening hazard models have traditionally relied on the location of mapped vents; seldom have they taken into account how vents are linked in space and time. We show that inputs needed to appropriately model distal hazards are fundamentally different than thoses required to model near-vent hazards (ground deformation). We provide a computational model to obtain more appropriate eruptive source parameters (ESPs) for distal volcanic hazard sources and show the utility of our code through three examples. The code's strength is that it links events based on the spatio-temporal relationships of vents through heirarchical clustering. The development of the code and its strenghts and weaknesses are discussed. This work challenges previous ideas about ESPs and we hope this work leads to further improvement in hazard assessment methods.

    International audience; This study investigates the potential to recover iron and chromium from a chromium-bearing carbon steel Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag. This slag contains indeed about 30 wt.% Fe and 2.5 wt.% Cr. However, the minerals are intergrown at small scale (<100 µm) and iron and chromium are mostly contained in spinel phases which makes the separation challenging. Several methods including Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe analysis were used in order to fully characterize the products obtained after a low-intensity magnetic separation of this carbon steel EAF slag, with the objective to define a pre-treatment process allowing the recovery of iron-rich particles and of a chromium-upgraded fraction. The results show that even if the magnetic separation seems to be not efficient in a first approach for producing an iron-rich/chromium-poor fraction, this fraction can be obtained by adding an attrition step which means that some separation mechanisms still occurred during the magnetic separation. However, it was not possible to produce a chromium-rich fraction. The main bottleneck for reaching a good separation is most probably the very fine liberation size of the iron and chromium bearing minerals.

    The adverse effects of air pollutants on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems are unquestionable. However, in recent years, indications of effects beyond these organ systems have become more evident. Traffic-related air pollution has been linked with neurological diseases, exacerbated cognitive dysfunction, and Alzheimer's disease. However, the exact air pollutant compositions and exposure scenarios leading to these adverse health effects are not known. Although several components of air pollution may be at play, recent experimental studies point to a key role of ultrafine particles (UFPs). While the importance of UFPs has been recognized, almost nothing is known about the smallest fraction of UFPs, and only >23 nm emissions are regulated in the EU. Moreover, the role of the semivolatile fraction of the emissions has been neglected. The Transport-Derived Ultrafines and the Brain Effects (TUBE) project will increase knowledge on harmful ultrafine air pollutants, as well as semivolatile compounds related to adverse health effects. By including all the major current combustion and emission control technologies, the TUBE project aims to provide new information on the adverse health effects of current traffic, as well as information for decision makers to develop more effective emission legislation. Most importantly, the TUBE project will include adverse health effects beyond the respiratory system; TUBE will assess how air pollution affects the brain and how air pollution particles might be removed from the brain. The purpose of this report is to describe the TUBE project, its background, and its goals.

    In March 2018, a landslide in Hrvatska Kostajnica completely destroyed multiple households. The damage was extensive, and lives were endangered. The question remains: Can it happen again? To enhance the knowledge and understanding of the soil and rock behaviour before, during, and after this geo-hazard event, multi-level sensing technologies in landslide research were applied. Day after the event field mapping and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data were collected with the inspection of available orthophoto and “geo” data. For the landslide, a new geological column was developed with mineralogical and geochemical analyses. The application of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) for detecting ground surface displacement was undertaken in order to determine pre-failure behaviour and to give indications about post-failure deformations. In 2020, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in the landslide body was undertaken to determine the depth of the landslide surface, and in 2021 ERT measurements in the vicinity of the landslide area were performed to obtain undisturbed material properties. Moreover, in 2021, detailed light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data were acquired for the area. All these different level data sets are being analyzed in order to develop a reliable landslide model as a first step towards answering the aforementioned question. Based on applied multi-level sensing technologies and acquired data, the landslide model is taking shape. However, further detailed research is still recommended.

    Onesnaženje podzemne vode s pesticidi je splošno razširjen problem, tako v svetu kot tudi v Sloveniji. Glede na pretekle velike obremenitve podzemne vode s pesticidi, je bil namen predstavljene raziskave ugotoviti razširjenost pesticidov v podzemni vodi Krško-Brežiškega polja v obdobju 2018 - 2019 in pri tem preveriti uporabnost metode vzorčenja vode s pasivnimi vzorčevalniki. Skupno smo odvzeli 21 vzorcev podzemne vode na enajstih lokacijah in po dva vzorca v rekah Sava in Krka. V vodi smo določili 15 različnih pesticidov in njihovih razgradnih produktov. V vzorcih podzemne vode sta bila največkrat določena atrazin in njegov razgradni produkt desetilatrazin. Sledijo pesticidi desetilterbutilazin, terbutilazin, metolaklor ter simazin. V površinski vodi smo zaznali atrazin, desetilatrazin, klortoluron, metolaklor in terbutilazin. S kvalitativno metodo vzorčenja s pasivnimi vzorčevalniki smo v podzemni in površinski vodi odvzeli skupno 24 vzorcev. Izločili smo 8 pesticidov, ki se pojavljajo v dveh serijah. Pogostnost pojavljanja posameznih pesticidov je po obeh metodah primerljiva. Pasivno vzorčenje vode se je izkazalo za primerno metodo identifikacije prisotnosti pesticidov. Največje obremenitve s pesticidi na Krško-Brežiškem polju prihajajo s kmetijskih površin. Podzemna voda je bolj obremenjena s pesticidi v osrednjem delu polja v smeri toka od zahoda proti vzhodu. Atrazin in desetilatrazin sta še vedno, kljub dvajsetletni prepovedi, najpogosteje in v najvišjih koncentracijah zaznana pesticida v podzemni vodi Krško-Brežiškega polja. Groundwater pollution with pesticides is a problem that occurs all over the world as well as in Slovenia. Considering the past high loads of groundwater with pesticides, the purpose of the presented research was to determine the presence of pesticides in the groundwater of Krško-Brežiško polje in the period 2018-2019 and to check the applicability of the passive sampling method. A total of 21 groundwater samples were taken at 11 locations and 2 samples each in the Sava and Krka rivers. We identified 15 pesticides and their degradation products. Atrazine and its degradation product desethylatrazine were most frequently determined in groundwater samples. They are followed by desethylterbutylazine, terbutylazine, metolachlor and simazine. Atrazine, desethylatrazine, chlortoluron, metolachlor and terbuthylazine were detected in surface water. A total of 24 samples were taken in groundwater and surface water using the qualitative passive sampling method. We singled out 8 pesticides that appear in two campaigns. The frequency and occurrence of individual pesticides by both methods are comparable. Passive sampling has proven to be an appropriate method of identifying the presence of pesticides. The highest loads in the Krško-Brežiško field arise from the agricultural land areas. Groundwater is more contaminated with pesticides in the central part of the field in the direction of groundwater flow from west to east. In the groundwater of the Krško-Brežice field, atrazine and desethylatrazine are still the most frequently detected pesticides with higher concentrations, despite a 20 years long ban on the use of atrazine-based plant protection products.

    In the present article we use geometric microliths (a specific type of arrowhead) and Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) in order to evaluate possible origin points and expansion routes for the Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula. In order to do so, we divide the Iberian Peninsula in four areas (Ebro river, Catalan shores, Xúquer river and Guadalquivir river) and we sample the geometric microliths existing in the sites with the oldest radiocarbon dates for each zone. On this data, we perform a partial Mantel test with three matrices: geographic distance matrix, cultural distance matrix and chronological distance matrix. After this is done, we simulate a series of partial Mantel tests where we alter the chronological matrix by using an expansion model with randomised origin points, and using the distribution of the observed partial Mantel test’s results as a summary statistic within an Approximate Bayesian Computation-Sequential Monte-Carlo (ABC-SMC) algorithm framework. Our results point clearly to a Neolithic expansion route following the Northern Mediterranean, whilst the Southern Mediterranean route could also find support and should be further discussed. The most probable origin points focus on the Xúquer river area.

    Exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) may affect neurodevelopmental outcomes in children. The mechanisms underlying these relationships are not currently known. We aim to assess whether PM affects the developing brains of schoolchildren in Poland, a country characterized by high levels of PM pollution. Children aged from 10 to 13 years (n = 800) are recruited to participate in this case–control study. Cases (children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) are being recruited by field psychologists. Population-based controls are being sampled from schools. The study area comprises 18 towns in southern Poland characterized by wide-ranging levels of PM. Comprehensive psychological assessments are conducted to assess cognitive and social functioning. Participants undergo structural, diffusion-weighted, task, and resting-state magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PM concentrations are estimated using land use regression models, incorporating information from air monitoring networks, dispersion models, and characteristics of roads and other land cover types. The estimated concentrations will be assigned to the prenatal and postnatal residential and preschool/school addresses of the study participants. We will assess whether long-term exposure to PM affects brain function, structure, and connectivity in healthy children and in those diagnosed with ADHD. This study will provide novel, in-depth understanding of the neurodevelopmental effects of PM pollution.     Sunlight is an abundant and clean energy source, the harvesting of which could make a significant contribution to society's increasing energy demands. Metal halide perovskites (MHP) have recently received attention for solar fuel generation through photocatalysis and solar-driven electrocatalysis. However, MHP photocatalysis is limited by low solar energy conversion efficiency, poor stability, and impractical reaction conditions. Compared to photocatalysis, MHP solar-driven electrocatalysis not only exhibits higher solar conversion efficiency but also is more stable when operating under practical reaction conditions. In this Perspective, we outline three leading types of MHP solar-driven electrocatalysis device technologies now in the research spotlight, namely, (1) photovoltaic-electrochemical (PV-EC), (2) photovoltaic-photoelectrochemical (PV-PEC), and (3) photoelectrochemical (PEC) approaches for solar-to-fuel reactions, including water-splitting and the CO2 reduction reaction.     What connects the sci-fi book Dune with coastal dunes and geoengineering? The answer lies in humans and their world-making activities. This paper proposes an innovative approach to coastal dunes as hybrid environments by analyzing the dunes stabilization programs developed on the US Pacific Coast. It looks into the shifting sands of the Oregon coast and how they influenced Frank Herbert to write his novel, why local communities and federal authorities were interested in fixing the moving dunes and how these works ended up having unexpected consequences. It explores how human features acting as forcing mechanisms on beach-dune systems caused changes that turned into controlling influences in their own right, creating new environments and concerns. The paper ends with a reflection on how fiction and the history of dunes can be used to critically think about the anthropocentric hubris of building futures by geoengineering the planet for environmental repair.

    This repository includes two datasets used in Ranghetti et al. (2018) and Ranghetti & Boschetti (2022) to analyse the magnitude of a decreasing trend in the extent of submerged rice paddies during the rice-sowing period in the Italian rice district: methods used to generate these data from MODIS remote sensing imagery are described in these papers. ffavg_2021.csv: this dataset includes values of yearly FFavg (averaged Flooding Fraction) at pixel level. Each record represent the FFavg value of a specific pixel in a specific year. x and y identifies the latitude and longitude of each record (in UTM32 coordinates); subdistrict represent the sub-district ID of each pixel ("A" to "G"); year is the year whose each record refers to; ff is the FFavg value (range 0-1); count is the number of MODIS images used to generate each FFavg aggregated value. ws_2021.csv: this dataset includes values of WS (proportion of Water-Seeded rice surface) at sub-district and district levels. subdistrict represent the sub-district ID of each record ("A" to "G", plus "all" which identifies values aggregated at district level); year is the year whose each record refers to; ws is the WS value (range 0-1); count is the number of pixels used to generate each WS aggregated record.     Vent opening hazard models are routinely used as inputs for assessing distal volcanic hazards (lava flows, tephra fallout) in distributed volcanic fields. These vent opening hazard models have traditionally relied on the location of mapped vents; seldom have they taken into account how vents are linked in space and time. We show that inputs needed to appropriately model distal hazards are fundamentally different than thoses required to model near-vent hazards (ground deformation). We provide a computational model to obtain more appropriate eruptive source parameters (ESPs) for distal volcanic hazard sources and show the utility of our code through three examples. The code's strength is that it links events based on the spatio-temporal relationships of vents through heirarchical clustering. The development of the code and its strenghts and weaknesses are discussed. This work challenges previous ideas about ESPs and we hope this work leads to further improvement in hazard assessment methods.

    International audience; This study investigates the potential to recover iron and chromium from a chromium-bearing carbon steel Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag. This slag contains indeed about 30 wt.% Fe and 2.5 wt.% Cr. However, the minerals are intergrown at small scale (<100 µm) and iron and chromium are mostly contained in spinel phases which makes the separation challenging. Several methods including Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe analysis were used in order to fully characterize the products obtained after a low-intensity magnetic separation of this carbon steel EAF slag, with the objective to define a pre-treatment process allowing the recovery of iron-rich particles and of a chromium-upgraded fraction. The results show that even if the magnetic separation seems to be not efficient in a first approach for producing an iron-rich/chromium-poor fraction, this fraction can be obtained by adding an attrition step which means that some separation mechanisms still occurred during the magnetic separation. However, it was not possible to produce a chromium-rich fraction. The main bottleneck for reaching a good separation is most probably the very fine liberation size of the iron and chromium bearing minerals.

    The adverse effects of air pollutants on the respiratory and cardiovascular systems are unquestionable. However, in recent years, indications of effects beyond these organ systems have become more evident. Traffic-related air pollution has been linked with neurological diseases, exacerbated cognitive dysfunction, and Alzheimer's disease. However, the exact air pollutant compositions and exposure scenarios leading to these adverse health effects are not known. Although several components of air pollution may be at play, recent experimental studies point to a key role of ultrafine particles (UFPs). While the importance of UFPs has been recognized, almost nothing is known about the smallest fraction of UFPs, and only >23 nm emissions are regulated in the EU. Moreover, the role of the semivolatile fraction of the emissions has been neglected. The Transport-Derived Ultrafines and the Brain Effects (TUBE) project will increase knowledge on harmful ultrafine air pollutants, as well as semivolatile compounds related to adverse health effects. By including all the major current combustion and emission control technologies, the TUBE project aims to provide new information on the adverse health effects of current traffic, as well as information for decision makers to develop more effective emission legislation. Most importantly, the TUBE project will include adverse health effects beyond the respiratory system; TUBE will assess how air pollution affects the brain and how air pollution particles might be removed from the brain. The purpose of this report is to describe the TUBE project, its background, and its goals.

    In March 2018, a landslide in Hrvatska Kostajnica completely destroyed multiple households. The damage was extensive, and lives were endangered. The question remains: Can it happen again? To enhance the knowledge and understanding of the soil and rock behaviour before, during, and after this geo-hazard event, multi-level sensing technologies in landslide research were applied. Day after the event field mapping and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) data were collected with the inspection of available orthophoto and “geo” data. For the landslide, a new geological column was developed with mineralogical and geochemical analyses. The application of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) for detecting ground surface displacement was undertaken in order to determine pre-failure behaviour and to give indications about post-failure deformations. In 2020, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in the landslide body was undertaken to determine the depth of the landslide surface, and in 2021 ERT measurements in the vicinity of the landslide area were performed to obtain undisturbed material properties. Moreover, in 2021, detailed light detection and ranging (LIDAR) data were acquired for the area. All these different level data sets are being analyzed in order to develop a reliable landslide model as a first step towards answering the aforementioned question. Based on applied multi-level sensing technologies and acquired data, the landslide model is taking shape. However, further detailed research is still recommended.

    Onesnaženje podzemne vode s pesticidi je splošno razširjen problem, tako v svetu kot tudi v Sloveniji. Glede na pretekle velike obremenitve podzemne vode s pesticidi, je bil namen predstavljene raziskave ugotoviti razširjenost pesticidov v podzemni vodi Krško-Brežiškega polja v obdobju 2018 - 2019 in pri tem preveriti uporabnost metode vzorčenja vode s pasivnimi vzorčevalniki. Skupno smo odvzeli 21 vzorcev podzemne vode na enajstih lokacijah in po dva vzorca v rekah Sava in Krka. V vodi smo določili 15 različnih pesticidov in njihovih razgradnih produktov. V vzorcih podzemne vode sta bila največkrat določena atrazin in njegov razgradni produkt desetilatrazin. Sledijo pesticidi desetilterbutilazin, terbutilazin, metolaklor ter simazin. V površinski vodi smo zaznali atrazin, desetilatrazin, klortoluron, metolaklor in terbutilazin. S kvalitativno metodo vzorčenja s pasivnimi vzorčevalniki smo v podzemni in površinski vodi odvzeli skupno 24 vzorcev. Izločili smo 8 pesticidov, ki se pojavljajo v dveh serijah. Pogostnost pojavljanja posameznih pesticidov je po obeh metodah primerljiva. Pasivno vzorčenje vode se je izkazalo za primerno metodo identifikacije prisotnosti pesticidov. Največje obremenitve s pesticidi na Krško-Brežiškem polju prihajajo s kmetijskih površin. Podzemna voda je bolj obremenjena s pesticidi v osrednjem delu polja v smeri toka od zahoda proti vzhodu. Atrazin in desetilatrazin sta še vedno, kljub dvajsetletni prepovedi, najpogosteje in v najvišjih koncentracijah zaznana pesticida v podzemni vodi Krško-Brežiškega polja. Groundwater pollution with pesticides is a problem that occurs all over the world as well as in Slovenia. Considering the past high loads of groundwater with pesticides, the purpose of the presented research was to determine the presence of pesticides in the groundwater of Krško-Brežiško polje in the period 2018-2019 and to check the applicability of the passive sampling method. A total of 21 groundwater samples were taken at 11 locations and 2 samples each in the Sava and Krka rivers. We identified 15 pesticides and their degradation products. Atrazine and its degradation product desethylatrazine were most frequently determined in groundwater samples. They are followed by desethylterbutylazine, terbutylazine, metolachlor and simazine. Atrazine, desethylatrazine, chlortoluron, metolachlor and terbuthylazine were detected in surface water. A total of 24 samples were taken in groundwater and surface water using the qualitative passive sampling method. We singled out 8 pesticides that appear in two campaigns. The frequency and occurrence of individual pesticides by both methods are comparable. Passive sampling has proven to be an appropriate method of identifying the presence of pesticides. The highest loads in the Krško-Brežiško field arise from the agricultural land areas. Groundwater is more contaminated with pesticides in the central part of the field in the direction of groundwater flow from west to east. In the groundwater of the Krško-Brežice field, atrazine and desethylatrazine are still the most frequently detected pesticides with higher concentrations, despite a 20 years long ban on the use of atrazine-based plant protection products.

    In the present article we use geometric microliths (a specific type of arrowhead) and Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) in order to evaluate possible origin points and expansion routes for the Neolithic in the Iberian Peninsula. In order to do so, we divide the Iberian Peninsula in four areas (Ebro river, Catalan shores, Xúquer river and Guadalquivir river) and we sample the geometric microliths existing in the sites with the oldest radiocarbon dates for each zone. On this data, we perform a partial Mantel test with three matrices: geographic distance matrix, cultural distance matrix and chronological distance matrix. After this is done, we simulate a series of partial Mantel tests where we alter the chronological matrix by using an expansion model with randomised origin points, and using the distribution of the observed partial Mantel test’s results as a summary statistic within an Approximate Bayesian Computation-Sequential Monte-Carlo (ABC-SMC) algorithm framework. Our results point clearly to a Neolithic expansion route following the Northern Mediterranean, whilst the Southern Mediterranean route could also find support and should be further discussed. The most probable origin points focus on the Xúquer river area.

    Exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) may affect neurodevelopmental outcomes in children. The mechanisms underlying these relationships are not currently known. We aim to assess whether PM affects the developing brains of schoolchildren in Poland, a country characterized by high levels of PM pollution. Children aged from 10 to 13 years (n = 800) are recruited to participate in this case–control study. Cases (children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) are being recruited by field psychologists. Population-based controls are being sampled from schools. The study area comprises 18 towns in southern Poland characterized by wide-ranging levels of PM. Comprehensive psychological assessments are conducted to assess cognitive and social functioning. Participants undergo structural, diffusion-weighted, task, and resting-state magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). PM concentrations are estimated using land use regression models, incorporating information from air monitoring networks, dispersion models, and characteristics of roads and other land cover types. The estimated concentrations will be assigned to the prenatal and postnatal residential and preschool/school addresses of the study participants. We will assess whether long-term exposure to PM affects brain function, structure, and connectivity in healthy children and in those diagnosed with ADHD. This study will provide novel, in-depth understanding of the neurodevelopmental effects of PM pollution.     Sunlight is an abundant and clean energy source, the harvesting of which could make a significant contribution to society's increasing energy demands. Metal halide perovskites (MHP) have recently received attention for solar fuel generation through photocatalysis and solar-driven electrocatalysis. However, MHP photocatalysis is limited by low solar energy conversion efficiency, poor stability, and impractical reaction conditions. Compared to photocatalysis, MHP solar-driven electrocatalysis not only exhibits higher solar conversion efficiency but also is more stable when operating under practical reaction conditions. In this Perspective, we outline three leading types of MHP solar-driven electrocatalysis device technologies now in the research spotlight, namely, (1) photovoltaic-electrochemical (PV-EC), (2) photovoltaic-photoelectrochemical (PV-PEC), and (3) photoelectrochemical (PEC) approaches for solar-to-fuel reactions, including water-splitting and the CO2 reduction reaction.
