    Collocations are one of the most studied types of word combinations. Their intricate nature, based on varying degrees of restriction, begs the question as to how modifications in their typical form influence the way they are processed by native speakers and learners. In this study, an eye-tracking experiment was carried out. We compared native speakers and learners of Italian when processing typical (i.e., common) and atypical (i.e., uncommon) collocations of Italian. Atypical collocations were developed by manipulating the grammatical and lexical components of a set of typical collocations. We also investigated how the online processing was affected by the different modifications (i.e., lexical and grammatical) performed and proficiency levels included. Both kinds of modifications disrupt collocation processing, with lexical modification being generally more salient than grammatical modification in terms of processing costs. Further, proficiency level influences phraseological processing, with varying effects related to the different kinds of modifications. The findings of our study are largely in line with previous research, while providing new insights into how lexis and grammar affect phraseological processing. They contribute to the evidence on languages other than English, a still under-researched domain in second language acquisition as a whole.

    Authors: Federica Ruggiero;

    Il presente contributo si concentra sul fenomeno dell’ironia verbale intesa come modalità marcata della comunicazione indiretta. In particolare, si intende discutere la cosiddetta concezione “ecoica” proposta dalla Teoria della Pertinenza (Sperber, Wilson, in part. 1978; 1981; cfr. anche Colston, Gibbs, 2007), per illustrarne da un lato l’originalità e l’innovatività rispetto ai quadri interpretativi del passato, dall’altro per evidenziarne le questioni lasciate aperte – soprattutto per alcuni limiti generali insiti nell’approccio pertinentista (cfr. Bianchi, 2009) – che di fatto costituiscono gli interrogativi irrisolti sul tema. Alla luce di questa analisi, saranno proposti alcuni spunti di integrazione alla suddetta teoria, sviluppando i suggerimenti provenienti dalle ricerche di Tommaso Russo Cardona (2017) e la sua proposta di analizzare l’ironia alla luce della Speech Acts Theory austiniana. Verbal irony between the “ecoic” conception and the austinian approach This contribution focuses on verbal irony as a marked mode of indirect communication. In particular, the intent is to discuss the so-called “echoic” conception proposed by Relevance Theory (Sperber, Wilson, in part. 1978; 1981; cf. also Colston, Gibbs, 2007), in order to illustrate, on the one hand, its originality and innovativeness compared with the earlier interpretative frameworks, and to highlight, on the other hand, the issues left open - especially due to some general limitations inherent in the pertinentist approach (cf. Bianchi, 2009) – that in fact represent the unresolved questions on the topic. In the light of this analysis, some suggestions for integration will be proposed, drawing from the research of Tommaso Russo Cardona (2017) and his proposal to analyse irony in the light of Austin’s Speech Acts Theory.

    Il presente contributo intende esplorare il discorso sulla salute di persone sorde tenendo conto delle dinamiche comunicative tra medico e paziente, delle conoscenze enciclopediche non sempre condivise, delle informazioni e dei servizi di interpretariato non sempre accessibili. I dati sono stati raccolti in un ciclo di incontri nell’ambito di un progetto realizzato dall’Ente Nazionale Sordi. I focus group erano strutturati secondo un approccio basato sull’etnografia della comunicazione, intorno a due parole-chiave “credenza” e “conoscenza” e facendo riferimento ad uno sfondo teorico basato sui principi del discourse analysis, dell’Health Belief Model e relativi sviluppi e limiti (Carpenter, 2010). Dalle analisi emerge un vero e proprio ‘discorso sulla salute e sulla malattia’ che ingloba una dimensione semio-linguistica e sociostorica in un intreccio narrativo fatto di credenze, corpi, pratiche, di rappresentazioni, che richiede di essere tenuto in considerazione nella presa in carico della persona sorda e nella costruzione di percorsi di cura condivisi e accessibili. What the signs do not say: implicit and explicit meaning in the representation of health of deaf people This paper aims to explore the discussion on the health of deaf people, taking into account the communication dynamics between doctor and patient, the encyclopedic knowledge that is not always shared, and the information and interpreting services that are not always accessible. The data were collected in a series of meetings as part of the project “How do you feel? Inclusive prevention and health support campaign for deaf people”, held by the Italian Association of the Deaf (ENS). The focus groups were structured according to an approach based on the ethnography of communication, around two key words “belief” and “knowledge” and referring to a theoretical background inspired by the principles of discourse analysis, the Health Belief Model and related developments and limits (Carpenter, 2010). From the results emerges a real ‘discourse on health and illness’ which incorporates a semio-linguistic and socio-historical dimension in a narrative intertwining made up of beliefs, bodies, practices, representations, which requires to be taken into consideration when taking charge of the deaf person and in the construction of shared and accessible care paths.

    Authors: Barni Monica;

    Il contributo si concentra sull’analisi del modo in cui i termini ‘multilinguismo’ e ‘plurilinguismo’ sono utilizzati nei documenti di politica linguistica europea, e sulle loro implicazioni per l’educazione linguistica. In tali documenti, anche molto recenti, è presente ancora una forte oscillazione dell’uso e del significato dei due termini, che contribuisce a condizionate la concreta applicazione pratica dell’educazione plurilingue, come intesa da De Mauro (1975) e dalle Dieci Tesi GISCEL.  From GISCEL Theses to european multi-(?)-linguistic policy documents: same challenges in different contexts The paper focuses on analyzing the way the terms ‘multilingualism’ and ‘plurilingualism’ are used in European language policy documents, and their implications for language education. In such documents, even very recent ones, there is still a strong fluctuation in the use and meaning of the two terms, which contributes to conditioning the concrete practical application of ‘plurilingual education’, as conceived by De Mauro (1975) and the Dieci Tesi GISCEL.

    AbstractUnalloyed copper objects were produced in the Chalcolithic Southern Levant in a two‐step process. Copper ore was smelted in pit furnaces, and the mechanically extracted copper prills melt in crucibles and cast into objects. However, the air supply remained unknown, and practical considerations shed doubt on the validity of some of the reconstructed practices. To refine the reconstruction, the metallurgical material from Abu Matar was reassessed. Most importantly, several previously unreported fragments suggest the use of bellows and covering the furnace with large pottery fragments. Our results provide probably the earliest evidence for the use of bellows.

    Abstract The transition away from fossil fuels towards a carbon-neutral, clean and circular economy is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Energy communities are one of the tools to re-structure our energy systems by harnessing the energy and allowing citizens to participate actively in the energy transition and thereby enjoy greater benefits. The definition of Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) given by the European Commission, places the REC as an association that produces and shares renewable energy, generating and managing cost-effective green energy autonomously, reducing CO2 emissions and energy waste. Observing this definition, the new Italian regulations concerning RECs boost distributed generation, encouraging the development of ‘zero-mile’ local energy production and smart grids. This research aims to evaluate the conditions to propose a REC in the Tor Sapienza district, as an Italian prototype, assessing the possibilities and advantages of transforming it into a large-scale sustainable infrastructure by means of a deep energy transition and the active role of local citizens, public administrations and small and medium-sized enterprises. Thanks to an in-depth technological, environmental and demographic survey of the neighbourhood, the study focuses on the retrofitting of a social housing complex in Tor Sapienza, as the main prosumer of the REC.

    Abstract The energy issue due to dependence on fossil fuels, pollution, and problems due to climate change are closely related issues. To address them, in recent years, solutions are being studied that provide for different methodologies that exploit alternative sources and technologies capable of reducing the environmental impact. One of the sectors most affected by the problem linked to environmental sustainability is the building sector, as can be read in the European Union directive 91 of 2002: “the energy used in the residential, healthcare and service sectors, made up for the most part of buildings, represents more than 40% of the total energy consumption”. To reduce the environmental load due to construction, it is necessary to study the energy performance of buildings, understand their critical issues and improve their efficiency using systems that exploit renewable energy sources and new construction techniques. In this study, a methodology will be developed to analyse the plant and energy characteristics of healthcare facilities, referring to the “target” buildings of a healthcare complex of Central Italy that will be used as a case study, highlighting all the problems and critical issues. Solutions will be proposed to improve the energy performance of the healthcare buildings, indicating the interventions to be implemented.

    Abstract Energy communities (ECs) are instrumental in driving the transition to renewable energy in urban areas. This study focuses on implementing ECs in Rome’s Tor Bella Monaca district, with a particular focus on linear mass housing. Using the Urban Modeling Interface (UMI) and Simulink, four energy community scenarios were simulated to evaluate their potential outcomes. The scenarios involved integrating photovoltaics and heat pumps into the community’s infrastructure to assess their impact on renewable energy production and CO2 reduction. The results demonstrate that higher electrification within an energy community leads to increased self-consumption of renewable energy and reduced reliance on the grid. Furthermore, the integration of heat pumps enhances energy consumption efficiency. This research highlights the significant potential of energy communities and innovative technologies in managing local renewable energy resources effectively. It provides valuable insights for developing sustainable energy models in urban areas. It emphasizes the importance of carefully evaluating technology sizing, integration, and the inclusion of thermal and electrical storage to maximize self-consumption while minimizing CO2 emissions. The study’s findings offer practical guidance for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders involved in sustainable energy management. They underscore the need for a holistic approach that combines technological advancements, community engagement, and thoughtful integration of renewable energy systems. Ultimately, this research contributes to the adoption of energy communities as crucial elements of a resilient and environmentally-friendly future.

    Abstract SDG 7 “affordable and clean energy” aims at expanding infrastructure and upgrading technology to provide clean and more efficient energy in all countries, encouraging socio-economic growth and helping the environment. Its implementation through legislative instruments led to the writing of the Sapienza Energy Plan and the Energy Implementation Program, which define a series of medium-term implementation strategies on buildings inside and outside the Sapienza University campus. Strategies aimed at the energy redevelopment of the building envelope to achieve the minimization of energy needs and the construction of PV systems as well as the technical and regulatory adaptation of existing HVAC systems to improve the environmental comfort conditions. By the requirements of current legislation, the Energy Performance has been quantified through the energy efficiency analysis of the building in its current state and post-interventions, led using a simulation on an energy diagnostic software. After the analyses, the refurbishment interventions have allowed defining the guidelines, in compliance with the contents of the Guidelines for the energy efficiency of cultural heritage and the PES, through a series of strategies aimed at the conservation and improvement of the building envelope and at improving the energy efficiency and the IEQ of the School of Mathematics.

    Authors: Federica Ruggiero;

    Authors: Barni Monica;
