description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Article 2022 Italy EnglishIOP Publishing Ltd EC | EUROfusionFederico Galli; Cristiano Ciurluini; Vincenzo Narcisi; Fabio Giannetti; Gianfranco Caruso;Abstract After decades of operation in nuclear power plants, Once-Through Steam Generators (OTSGs) were recently proposed for nuclear fusion applications. In particular, they are supposed to be installed in the primary cooling systems of the European Union Demonstration fusion power plant (EU-DEMO). One of the key reactor components is the Breeding blanket (BB). Among the BB concepts that are currently under study, Water-Cooled Lithium-Lead (WCLL) option was considered for this work. The WCLL blanket is divided in two main subsystems, the breeder zone (BZ) and the first wall (FW), each one provided with an independent cooling circuit, named Primary Heat Transfer System (PHTS). Thermal power removed from BB by BZ and FW PHTS is driven to the Power Conversion System (PCS) to be converted into electricity. The thermal coupling is ensured by two OTSGs per system. At the Department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energy Engineering (DIAEE) of Sapienza University of Rome, a simulation activity was carried out to understand the component thermal-hydraulic behavior during DEMO normal operations. For calculation purposes, a full model of the steam generator was prepared by using a modified version of RELAP5/MOD3.3 system code. The computational activity performed allows to preliminary characterize the OTSG thermal-hydraulic performances during both pulse and dwell phases.

This study uses a stylized, socio-hydrological model to simulate the mutual feedbacks between human societies and flood events. It integrates hydrological modelling with cultural theory and proposes four ideal types of society that reflect existing dominant risk perception and management: risk neglecting, risk monitoring, risk downplaying and risk controlling societies. We explore the consequent trajectories of flood risk generated by the interactions between floods and people for these ideal types of society over time. Results suggest that flood losses are substantially reduced when awareness raising attitudes are promoted through inclusive, participatory approaches in the community. In contrast, societies that rely on top-down hierarchies and structural measures to protect settlements on floodplains may still suffer significant losses during extreme events. This study illustrates how predictions formed through social science theories can be applied and tested in hydrological modelling. </span></p>

By sequencing 523 ancient humans, we show that the primary source of ancestry in modern South Asians is a prehistoric genetic gradient between people related to early hunter-gatherers of Iran and Southeast Asia. After the Indus Valley Civilization's decline, its people mixed with individuals in the southeast to form one of the two main ancestral populations of South Asia, whose direct descendants live in southern India. Simultaneously, they mixed with descendants of Steppe pastoralists who, starting around 4000 years ago, spread via Central Asia to form the other main ancestral population. The Steppe ancestry in South Asia has the same profile as that in Bronze Age Eastern Europe, tracking a movement of people that affected both regions and that likely spread the distinctive features shared between Indo-Iranian and Balto-Slavic languages.

This article focuses on prehistoric communities and asks who performed specific tasks. Ceramic specialisation is traditionally approached through models of production organisation that are largely based on ethnoarchaeological case studies and are usually difficult to link with the archaeological evidence. Based on these models, the economic framework plays a key role in associating the emergence of specialisation with the intensification of the demand for goods and identifying specialists by the amount of time required for production. This approach neglects the social value of products and the social context sustaining skills development. This article discusses surface treatments as a means to understand the skills of potters and the social values of specific ceramic products in Copper Age communities from central Italy. The methodology combines the analysis of technological traces and experimental archaeology used to infer craftspeople’s expertise and reveals differences in the chaine operatoire and skills involved in the production of domestic and funerary vessels. The results support a hypothesis of household specialisation that developed in these communities based upon differences in skills, knowledge and dedication among potters and the recurrent association of skilled productions with ritual contexts.

Yoffe; Jun Zhu;International audience; The EuPRAXIA project aims at designing the world’s first accelerator based on plasma-wakefield advanced technique, which can deliver a 5 GeV electron beam with simultaneously high charge, low emittance and low energy spread to user’s communities. Such challenging objectives can only have a chance to be achieved when particular efforts are dedicated to identify the subsequent issues and to find the way to solve them. Many injection/acceleration schemes and techniques have been explored by means of thorough simulations in more than ten European institutes to sort out the most appropriate ones. The specific issues of high charge, high beam quality and beam extraction then transfer to the user’s applications, have been tackled with many innovative approaches*. This article highlights the different advanced methods that have been employed by the EuPRAXIA collaboration and the preliminary results obtained. The needs in terms of laser and plasma parameters for such an accelerator are also summarized.

Bertarelli; G. Gobbi; J. Guardia-Valenzuela; Michael Guinchard; Fiona Harden; Michele Pasquali; Stefano Redaelli; E. Skordis; Two new absorbing materials were developed as collimator inserts to fulfil the requirements of HL-LHC higher brightness beams: molybdenum-carbide graphite (MoGr) and copper-diamond (CuCD). These materials were tested under intense beam impacts at CERN HiRadMat facility in 2015, when full jaw prototypes were irradiated. Additional tests in HiRadMat were performed in 2017 on another series of material samples, including also improved grades of MoGr and CuCD, and different coating solutions. This paper summarizes the main results of the two experiments, with a main focus on the behaviour of the novel composite blocks, the metallic housing, as well as the cooling circuit. The experimental campaign confirmed the final choice for the materials and the design solutions for HL-LHC collimators, and constituted a unique chance of benchmarking numerical models. In particular, the tests validated the selection of MoGr for primary and secondary collimators, and CuCD as a valid solution for robust tertiary collimators. Proceedings of the 10th Int. description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Article 2022 Italy EnglishIOP Publishing Ltd EC | EUROfusionFederico Galli; Cristiano Ciurluini; Vincenzo Narcisi; Fabio Giannetti; Gianfranco Caruso;Abstract After decades of operation in nuclear power plants, Once-Through Steam Generators (OTSGs) were recently proposed for nuclear fusion applications.
