In the Anthropocene, predicted sea-level rise is expected to continue, threating human life and activities along the coast. Dunes play a vital role in providing protection from this threat, aside from the ‘ecosystem’ services that they supply. This article uses scientific, popular and unpublished sources from the nineteenth century and twentieth to examine New Zealand’s largest coastal dune system: the Manawatū-Whanganui dune field. Extending south from Pātea to Paekakariki, it comprises approximately 900 square kilometres. Here, destabilized dunes drifting inland caused social, economic and political problems over the last 150 years. In the nineteenth century, human activities were responsible for setting the dunes in motion. Debates about the matter and attempts to prevent and stop it were then occurring in many parts of the world. Since dunes were a common concern, knowledge and practices were shared and travelled between countries though experts and migrants. The consequences of the solutions implemented and new environmental conditions explain that dunes are still a major issue in the Manawatū- Whanganui region. This article presents a comparative analysis of historical and present- day human responses to dune management to better understand long-term dune drift, its mechanisms and responses. Despite looking at a local case, this study can be extrapolated to dunes worldwide. It shows that holistic management of coastal ecosystems must take into account interdisciplinary analyses of long-term relations between dunes and society. Otherwise, the full picture about the present situation of dunes cannot be apprehended, compromising the implementation of future adaptation measures. Replication studies in psychological science sometimes fail to reproduce prior findings. If these studies use methods that are unfaithful to the original study or ineffective in eliciting the phenomenon of interest, then a failure to replicate may be a failure of the protocol rather than a challenge to the original finding. Formal pre-data-collection peer review by experts may address shortcomings and increase replicability rates. We selected 10 replication studies from the Reproducibility Project: Psychology (RP:P; Open Science Collaboration, 2015) for which the original authors had expressed concerns about the replication designs before data collection; only one of these studies had yielded a statistically significant effect ( p < .05). Commenters suggested that lack of adherence to expert review and low-powered tests were the reasons that most of these RP:P studies failed to replicate the original effects. We revised the replication protocols and received formal peer review prior to conducting new replication studies. We administered the RP:P and revised protocols in multiple laboratories (median number of laboratories per original study = 6.5, range = 3–9; median total sample = 1,279.5, range = 276–3,512) for high-powered tests of each original finding with both protocols. Overall, following the preregistered analysis plan, we found that the revised protocols produced effect sizes similar to those of the RP:P protocols (Δ r = .002 or .014, depending on analytic approach). The median effect size for the revised protocols ( r = .05) was similar to that of the RP:P protocols ( r = .04) and the original RP:P replications ( r = .11), and smaller than that of the original studies ( r = .37). Analysis of the cumulative evidence across the original studies and the corresponding three replication attempts provided very precise estimates of the 10 tested effects and indicated that their effect sizes (median r = .07, range = .00–.15) were 78% smaller, on average, than the original effect sizes (median r = .37, range = .19–.50). This chronicle came out of a research on the portuguese language and communications carried out at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in 2018, and reflects the perception of a foreigner, in this case poet Leonel Alvarado, of daily live in the city. Esta crônica surgiu de uma pesquisa sobre língua portuguesa e comunicações desenvolvida na Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, em 2018, e reflete a percepção de um estrangeiro, neste caso do poeta Leonel Alvarado, sobre o cotidiano da cidade.

Abstract Data Mining is the process of analyzing data using automated methodologies to find hidden patterns [1]. Data mining processes aim at the use of the dataset generated by a process or business in order to obtain information that supports decision making at executive levels [2] [3] through the automation of the process of finding predictable information in large databases and answer to questions that traditionally required intense manual analysis [4]. Due to its definition, data mining is applicable to educational processes, and an example of that is the emergence of a research branch named Educational Data Mining, in which patterns and prediction search techniques are used to find information that contributes to improving educational quality [5]. This paper presents a performance study of data mining algorithms: Decision Tree and Logistic Regression, applied to data generated by the academic function at a higher education institution.

Abstract One problem in classifying tasks is the handling of features that characterize classes. When the list of features is long, a noise resistant algorithm of irrelevant features can be used, or these features can be reduced. Authorship attribution is a task that assigns an anonymous text to a subject on a list of possible authors, has been widely addressed as an automatic text classification task. In it, n-grams can produce long lists of features even in small corpora. Despite this, there is a lack of research exposing the effects of using noise-resistant algorithms, reducing traits, or combining both options. This paper responds to this lack by using contributions to discussion forums related to organized crime. The results show that the classifiers evaluated, in general, benefit from feature reduction, and that, thanks to such reduction, even classical algorithms outperform state-of-the-art classifiers considered highly noise resistant.

The malacological collection of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, curated by Dr. Carla B. Kotzian, has been recently donated to the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP, Brazil). The collection is rich in well preserved specimens of terrestrial gastropods from central Rio Grande do Sul state, in southernmost Brazil. That region, centered in the municipality of Santa Maria, represents a transitional area between the Atlantic Rainforest and Pampas biomes and has been scarcely reported in the literature. Therefore, we present a taxonomical study of these specimens, complemented by historical material of the MZSP collection. Overall, we report 20 species, mostly belonging to the Stylommatophora, from which four represent new records for Rio Grande do Sul: Adelopoma brasiliense, Happia vitrina, Macrodontes gargantua, and Cyclodontina corderoi. The present report of C. corderoi is also the first from Brazil. Two introduced species were found in the studied material: Bradybaena similaris and Zonitoides sp. A coleção malacológica da Universidade Federal de Santa Matia, curada pela Dra. Carla B. Kotzian, foi recentemente doada ao Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (MZSP, Brasil). A coleção é rica em espécimes bem preservados de gastrópodes terrestres do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, no extremo sul do Brasil. Esta região, centrada no município de Santa Maria, representa uma área de transição entre os biomas Mata Atlântica e Pampa, e tem sido pouco relatada na literatura. Visando melhoria desse cenário, apresentamos um estudo taxonômico desses espécimes, complementado por material histórico da coleção MZSP. No total, relatamos 20 espécies, na sua maioria pertencentes a Stylommatophora, das quais quatro representam novos registros para o Rio Grande do Sul: Adelopoma brasiliense, Happia vitrina, Macrodontes gargantua e Cyclodontina corderoi. O presente relato de C. corderoi é também o primeiro do Brasil. Duas espécies introduzidas foram encontradas no material estudado: Bradybaena similaris e Zonitoides sp.
