    Text-based open-ended questions in academic formative and summative assessments help students become deep learners and prepare them to understand concepts for a subsequent conceptual assessment. However, grading text-based questions, especially in large courses, is tedious and time-consuming for instructors. Text processing models continue progressing with the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms. Especially after breakthroughs in Large Language Models (LLM), there is immense potential to automate rapid assessment and feedback of text-based responses in education. This systematic review adopts a scientific and reproducible literature search strategy based on the PRISMA process using explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria to study text-based automatic assessment systems in post-secondary education, screening 838 papers and synthesizing 93 studies. To understand how text-based automatic assessment systems have been developed and applied in education in recent years, three research questions are considered. All included studies are summarized and categorized according to a proposed comprehensive framework, including the input and output of the system, research motivation, and research outcomes, aiming to answer the research questions accordingly. Additionally, the typical studies of automated assessment systems, research methods, and application domains in these studies are investigated and summarized. This systematic review provides an overview of recent educational applications of text-based assessment systems for understanding the latest AI/NLP developments assisting in text-based assessments in higher education. Findings will particularly benefit researchers and educators incorporating LLMs such as ChatGPT into their educational activities. Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables

    As per the objectives of Project CHANGES, particularly its thematic sub-project on the use of virtual technologies for museums and art collections, our goal was to obtain a digital twin of the temporary exhibition on Ulisse Aldrovandi called "The Other Renaissance", and make it accessible to users online. After a preliminary study of the exhibition, focussing on acquisition constraints and related solutions, we proceeded with the digital twin creation by acquiring, processing, modelling, optimising, exporting, and metadating the exhibition. We made hybrid use of two acquisition techniques to create new digital cultural heritage objects and environments, and we used open technologies, formats, and protocols to make available the final digital product. Here, we describe the process of collecting and curating bibliographical exhibition (meta)data and the beginning of the digital twin creation to foster its findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability. The creation of the digital twin is currently ongoing.

    Authors: Moon Duchin; Bridget Eileen Tenner;

    "Compactness," or the use of shape as a proxy for fairness, has been a long-running theme in the scrutiny of electoral districts; badly-shaped districts are often flagged as examples of the abuse of power known as gerrymandering. The most popular compactness metrics in the redistricting literature belong to a class of scores that we call contour-based, making heavy use of area and perimeter. This entire class of district scores has some common drawbacks, outlined here. We make the case for discrete shape scores and offer two promising ideas: a cut score and a spanning tree score. We use recent United States redistricting history as a source of examples. No shape metric can work alone as a seal of fairness, but we argue that discrete metrics are better aligned both with the grounding of the redistricting problem in geography and with the computational tools that have recently gained significant traction in the courtroom.     Authors: Vijaya Kanaparthi;

    In this study, I employ a multifaceted comprehensive scientometric approach to explore the intellectual underpinnings of AI and ML in financial research by examining the publication patterns of articles, journals, authors, institutions, and nations by leveraging quantitative techniques, that transcend conventional systematic literature reviews, enabling the effective analysis of vast scientometric and bibliographic data. By applying these approaches, I identify influential works, seminal contributions, thought leaders, topical clusters, research streams, and new research frontiers, ultimately fostering a deeper understanding of the knowledge structure in AI and ML finance research by considering publication records from 2010 to 2022 from several search engines and database sources. The present study finds a marked increase in publications from 2017 to 2022, which highlights a growing interest and expanding research activity in the field, indicating its potential significance and relevance in the contemporary academic landscape.

    Authors: Mahdi Bahrami; Amir Albadvi;

    The cultural heritage buildings (CHB), which are part of mankind's history and identity, are in constant danger of damage or in extreme situations total destruction. That being said, it's of utmost importance to preserve them by identifying the existent, or presumptive, defects using novel methods so that renovation processes can be done in a timely manner and with higher accuracy. The main goal of this research is to use new deep learning (DL) methods in the process of preserving CHBs (situated in Iran); a goal that has been neglected especially in developing countries such as Iran, as these countries still preserve their CHBs using manual, and even archaic, methods that need direct human supervision. Having proven their effectiveness and performance when it comes to processing images, the convolutional neural networks (CNN) are a staple in computer vision (CV) literacy and this paper is not exempt. When lacking enough CHB images, training a CNN from scratch would be very difficult and prone to overfitting; that's why we opted to use a technique called transfer learning (TL) in which we used pre-trained ResNet, MobileNet, and Inception networks, for classification. Even more, the Grad-CAM was utilized to localize the defects to some extent. The final results were very favorable based on those of similar research. The final proposed model can pave the way for moving from manual to unmanned CHB conservation, hence an increase in accuracy and a decrease in human-induced errors. I analyze factory worker households in the early 1920s in Osaka to examine idiosyncratic income shocks and consumption. Using the household-level monthly panel dataset, I find that while households could not fully cope with idiosyncratic income shocks at that time, they mitigated fluctuations in indispensable consumption during economic hardship. In terms of risk-coping mechanisms, I find suggestive evidence that savings institutions helped mitigate vulnerabilities and that both using borrowing institutions and adjusting labor supply served as risk-coping strategies among households with less savings.

    In the intricate field of legal studies, the analysis of court decisions is a cornerstone for the effective functioning of the judicial system. The ability to predict court outcomes helps judges during the decision-making process and equips lawyers with invaluable insights, enhancing their strategic approaches to cases. Despite its significance, the domain of Arabic court analysis remains under-explored. This paper pioneers a comprehensive predictive analysis of Arabic court decisions on a dataset of 10,813 commercial court real cases, leveraging the advanced capabilities of the current state-of-the-art large language models. Through a systematic exploration, we evaluate three prevalent foundational models (LLaMA-7b, JAIS-13b, and GPT3.5-turbo) and three training paradigms: zero-shot, one-shot, and tailored fine-tuning. Besides, we assess the benefit of summarizing and/or translating the original Arabic input texts. This leads to a spectrum of 14 model variants, for which we offer a granular performance assessment with a series of different metrics (human assessment, GPT evaluation, ROUGE, and BLEU scores). We show that all variants of LLaMA models yield limited performance, whereas GPT-3.5-based models outperform all other models by a wide margin, surpassing the average score of the dedicated Arabic-centric JAIS model by 50%. Furthermore, we show that all scores except human evaluation are inconsistent and unreliable for assessing the performance of large language models on court decision predictions. This study paves the way for future research, bridging the gap between computational linguistics and Arabic legal analytics. Comment: 26 pages

    Automated fact-checking, using machine learning to verify claims, has grown vital as misinformation spreads beyond human fact-checking capacity. Large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 are increasingly trusted to write academic papers, lawsuits, and news articles and to verify information, emphasizing their role in discerning truth from falsehood and the importance of being able to verify their outputs. Understanding the capacities and limitations of LLMs in fact-checking tasks is therefore essential for ensuring the health of our information ecosystem. Here, we evaluate the use of LLM agents in fact-checking by having them phrase queries, retrieve contextual data, and make decisions. Importantly, in our framework, agents explain their reasoning and cite the relevant sources from the retrieved context. Our results show the enhanced prowess of LLMs when equipped with contextual information. GPT-4 outperforms GPT-3, but accuracy varies based on query language and claim veracity. While LLMs show promise in fact-checking, caution is essential due to inconsistent accuracy. Our investigation calls for further research, fostering a deeper comprehension of when agents succeed and when they fail.

    The unprecedented success of image reconstruction approaches based on deep neural networks has revolutionised both the processing and the analysis paradigms in several applied disciplines. In the field of digital humanities, the task of digital reconstruction of ancient frescoes is particularly challenging due to the scarce amount of available training data caused by ageing, wear, tear and retouching over time. To overcome these difficulties, we consider the Deep Image Prior (DIP) inpainting approach which computes appropriate reconstructions by relying on the progressive updating of an untrained convolutional neural network so as to match the reliable piece of information in the image at hand while promoting regularisation elsewhere. In comparison with state-of-the-art approaches (based on variational/PDEs and patch-based methods), DIP-based inpainting reduces artefacts and better adapts to contextual/non-local information, thus providing a valuable and effective tool for art historians. As a case study, we apply such approach to reconstruct missing image contents in a dataset of highly damaged digital images of medieval paintings located into several chapels in the Mediterranean Alpine Arc and provide a detailed description on how visible and invisible (e.g., infrared) information can be integrated for identifying and reconstructing damaged image regions. Petya Osenova was partially supported by CLaDA-BG, the Bulgarian National Interdisciplinary Re- search e-Infrastructure for Resources and Technologies in favor of the Bulgarian Language and Cultural Heritage, and partially through the EU infrastructures CLARIN and DARIAH, Grant number DO01- 377/18.12.2020. Parliamentary and legislative debate transcripts provide an informative insight into elected politicians’ opinions, positions, and policy preferences. They are interesting for political and social sciences as well as linguistics and natural language processing (NLP) research. While exiting research studied individual parliaments, we apply advanced NLP methods to a joint and comparative analysis of six national parliaments (Bulgarian, Czech, French, Slovene, Spanish, and United Kingdom) between 2017 and 2020. We analyze emotions and sentiment in the transcripts from the ParlaMint dataset collection, and assess if the age, gender, and political orientation of speakers can be detected from their speeches. The results show some commonalities and many surprising differences among the analyzed countries.

    Authors: Moon Duchin; Bridget Eileen Tenner;

    "Compactness," or the use of shape as a proxy for fairness, has been a long-running theme in the scrutiny of electoral districts; badly-shaped districts are often flagged as examples of the abuse of power known as gerrymandering. The most popular compactness metrics in the redistricting literature belong to a class of scores that we call contour-based, making heavy use of area and perimeter. This entire class of district scores has some common drawbacks, outlined here. We make the case for discrete shape scores and offer two promising ideas: a cut score and a spanning tree score. We use recent United States redistricting history as a source of examples. No shape metric can work alone as a seal of fairness, but we argue that discrete metrics are better aligned both with the grounding of the redistricting problem in geography and with the computational tools that have recently gained significant traction in the courtroom.     Authors: Vijaya Kanaparthi;

    Authors: Mahdi Bahrami; Amir Albadvi;

    The cultural heritage buildings (CHB), which are part of mankind's history and identity, are in constant danger of damage or in extreme situations total destruction. That being said, it's of utmost importance to preserve them by identifying the existent, or presumptive, defects using novel methods so that renovation processes can be done in a timely manner and with higher accuracy. The main goal of this research is to use new deep learning (DL) methods in the process of preserving CHBs (situated in Iran); a goal that has been neglected especially in developing countries such as Iran, as these countries still preserve their CHBs using manual, and even archaic, methods that need direct human supervision. Having proven their effectiveness and performance when it comes to processing images, the convolutional neural networks (CNN) are a staple in computer vision (CV) literacy and this paper is not exempt. When lacking enough CHB images, training a CNN from scratch would be very difficult and prone to overfitting; that's why we opted to use a technique called transfer learning (TL) in which we used pre-trained ResNet, MobileNet, and Inception networks, for classification. Even more, the Grad-CAM was utilized to localize the defects to some extent. The final results were very favorable based on those of similar research. The final proposed model can pave the way for moving from manual to unmanned CHB conservation, hence an increase in accuracy and a decrease in human-induced errors.     Authors: Ogasawara, Kota;

Authors: Miok, Kristian; Hidalgo Tenorio, Encarnación; Osenova, Petya; Benítez Castro, Miguel Ángel; +1 Authors

    This work is based upon the collaboration in the COST Action CA18209 – NexusLinguarum “European network for Web-centred linguistic data science”, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Sci- ence and Technology). Marko Robnik-Šikonja received financial support from the Slovenian Research Agency through core research programme P6-0411 and projects J6-2581, J7-3159, and V5-2297. Encar- nación Hidalgo Tenorio was financially supported by the European Social Fund, the Andalusian Gov- ernment, and the University of Granada (Project References: A-HUM-250-UGR18 & P18-FR-5020).
