    El Niño–Southern Oscillation dynamics affect global weather patterns, with regionally diverse hydrological responses posing critical societal challenges. The lack of seasonally resolved hydrological proxy reconstructions beyond the observational era limits our understanding of boundary conditions that drive and/or adjust El Niño–Southern Oscillation variability. Detailed reconstructions of past El Niño–Southern Oscillation dynamics can help modelling efforts, highlight impacts on disparate ecosystems and link to extreme events that affect populations from the tropics to high latitudes. Here, mid-Holocene El Niño–Southern Oscillation and hydrological changes are reconstructed in the south-west Pacific using a stalagmite from Niue Island, which represents the period 6.4–5.4 ka BP. Stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios, trace elements and greyscale data from a U/Th-dated and layer counted stalagmite profile are combined to infer changes in local hydrology at sub-annual to multi-decadal timescales. Principal component analysis reveals seasonal-scale hydrological changes expressed as variations in stalagmite growth patterns and geochemical characteristics. Higher levels of host rock-derived elements (Sr/Ca and U/Ca) and higher δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C values are observed in dark, dense calcite laminae deposited during the dry season, whereas during the wet season, higher concentrations of soil-derived elements (Zn/Ca and Mn/Ca) and lower δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C values are recorded in pale, porous calcite laminae. The multi-proxy record from Niue shows seasonal cycles associated with hydrological changes controlled by the positioning and strength of the South Pacific Convergence Zone. Wavelet analysis of the greyscale record reveals that El Niño–Southern Oscillation was continuously active during the mid-Holocene, with two weaker intervals at 6–5.9 and 5.6–5.5 ka BP. El Niño–Southern Oscillation especially affects dry season rainfall dynamics, with increased cyclone activity that reduces hydrological seasonality during El Niño years. Wind-abraded cobbles (ventifacts) and aeolian sand are known from the sandy-gravelly coastal areas of south-western Sweden, especially in association with raised deltas. Ventifacts are recorded on at least two different stratigraphic levels, at some sites atop glaciofluvial sediment, at other sites atop littoral deposits, and in some places at both levels, while aeolian sand usually forms a surficial cover. The formation of ventifacts has usually been coupled to abrasion due to katabatic winds from the retreating ice sheet or with periglacial climate during the Younger Dryas stadial (12.8–11.7 ka). To determine the timing of these deflation events, we have applied a combination of dating methods to ventifacts and associated sediments on top of an ice-contact delta at Veinge, south-western Sweden. Quartz and feldspar luminescence dating as well as portable luminescence profiling has been used for littoral and aeolian sediments over- and underlying deflation surfaces, while rock surface luminescence burial dating and paired 14C–10Be cosmogenic nuclide dating were conducted on ventifacts. The results show that a first deflation event occurred c. 16.5 ka, just after deglaciation and prior to a regional transgression that peaked around 15.7 ka. At 12.4–11.4 ka, during the Younger Dryas stadial, a new set of ventifacts formed on the surface of the exposed littoral sands and gravels. Some wind abrasion also occurred in the early Holocene, but at c. 8.5 ka the surface was covered by aeolian sand, up to 2.5 m thick. The combination of different dating methods have allowed us to draw more informed conclusions on the timing and duration of these wind abrasion/transport events than would have been possible from the use of only single-method dating. It has also made it possible to infer some environmental conditions during deposition. For example, both glaciofluvial and littoral deposits show evidence of incomplete bleaching of the luminescence signal. This suggests short subaerial transport and brief reworking by waves, respectively, though bleaching conditions improved during shore regression. Rock surface burial luminescence profiles reveal that some ventifacts were repeatedly exposed, but that later event(s) were shorter in duration as indicated by quartz-feldspar age comparisons. Around 20 cyclists from India embarked on long and arduous intercontinental journeys between 1923 and 1942 individually or in groups. Many of these ‘globe cyclists’, as they were often referred to by the Indian press, later wrote media articles and longer travelogues about their expeditions. This article examines the narratives of these long-distance cycling expeditions to argue that these journeys can illuminate new histories of the bicycle’s socio-cultural impact beyond the West, the self-fashioning of Indian cyclotourists as an example of complicit masculinity, and world tours as a novel form of anti-imperial counter-mobility. It does so by drawing on several historiographical subfields that have hitherto rarely been mobilized together, namely the histories of sports, masculinity, colonialism and decolonization, tourism, and (everyday) technology. The article focuses pars pro toto on the tours of Adi Hakim, Jal Bapasola, and Rustom Bhumgara (1923-1928) and Ramnath Biswas (1931-1940) that were strongly over-determined by the contexts of colonialism, anti-colonialism, and decolonisation, while nationalist masculinity represented another recurring trope. Background: Patients with cancer starting systemic treatment programs, such as chemotherapy, often develop depression. A prediction model may assist physicians and health care workers in the early identification of these vulnerable patients. Objective: This study aimed to develop a prediction model for depression risk within the first month of cancer treatment. Methods: We included 16,159 patients diagnosed with cancer starting chemo- or radiotherapy treatment between 2008 and 2021. Machine learning models (eg, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator [LASSO] logistic regression) and natural language processing models (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers [BERT]) were used to develop multimodal prediction models using both electronic health record data and unstructured text (patient emails and clinician notes). Model performance was assessed in an independent test set (n=5387, 33%) using area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), calibration curves, and decision curve analysis to assess initial clinical impact use. Results: Among 16,159 patients, 437 (2.7%) received a depression diagnosis within the first month of treatment. The LASSO logistic regression models based on the structured data (AUROC 0.74, 95% CI 0.71-0.78) and structured data with email classification scores (AUROC 0.74, 95% CI 0.71-0.78) had the best discriminative performance. The BERT models based on clinician notes and structured data with email classification scores had AUROCs around 0.71. The logistic regression model based on email classification scores alone performed poorly (AUROC 0.54, 95% CI 0.52-0.56), and the model based solely on clinician notes had the worst performance (AUROC 0.50, 95% CI 0.49-0.52). Calibration was good for the logistic regression models, whereas the BERT models produced overly extreme risk estimates even after recalibration. There was a small range of decision thresholds for which the best-performing model showed promising clinical effectiveness use. The risks were underestimated for female and Black patients. Conclusions: The results demonstrated the potential and limitations of machine learning and multimodal models for predicting depression risk in patients with cancer. Future research is needed to further validate these models, refine the outcome label and predictors related to mental health, and address biases across subgroups. Background: Physicians are hesitant to forgo the opportunity of entering unstructured clinical notes for structured data entry in electronic health records. Does free text increase informational value in comparison with structured data? Objective: This study aims to compare information from unstructured text-based chief complaints harvested and processed by a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm with clinician-entered structured diagnoses in terms of their potential utility for automated improvement of patient workflows. Methods: Electronic health records of 293,298 patient visits at the emergency department of a Swiss university hospital from January 2014 to October 2021 were analyzed. Using emergency department overcrowding as a case in point, we compared supervised NLP-based keyword dictionaries of symptom clusters from unstructured clinical notes and clinician-entered chief complaints from a structured drop-down menu with the following 2 outcomes: hospitalization and high Emergency Severity Index (ESI) score. Results: Of 12 symptom clusters, the NLP cluster was substantial in predicting hospitalization in 11 (92%) clusters; 8 (67%) clusters remained significant even after controlling for the cluster of clinician-determined chief complaints in the model. All 12 NLP symptom clusters were significant in predicting a low ESI score, of which 9 (75%) remained significant when controlling for clinician-determined chief complaints. The correlation between NLP clusters and chief complaints was low (r=−0.04 to 0.6), indicating complementarity of information. Conclusions: The NLP-derived features and clinicians’ knowledge were complementary in explaining patient outcome heterogeneity. They can provide an efficient approach to patient flow management, for example, in an emergency medicine setting. We further demonstrated the feasibility of creating extensive and precise keyword dictionaries with NLP by medical experts without requiring programming knowledge. Using the dictionary, we could classify short and unstructured clinical texts into diagnostic categories defined by the clinician. JMIR Medical Informatics, 12 ISSN:2291-9694

    As one of the most effective methods to improve the accuracy and robustness of speech tasks, the audio–visual fusion approach has recently been introduced into the field of Keyword Spotting (KWS). However, existing audio–visual keyword spotting models are limited to detecting isolated words, while keyword spotting for unconstrained speech is still a challenging problem. To this end, an Audio–Visual Keyword Transformer (AVKT) network is proposed to spot keywords in unconstrained video clips. The authors present a transformer classifier with learnable CLS tokens to extract distinctive keyword features from the variable‐length audio and visual inputs. The outputs of audio and visual branches are combined in a decision fusion module. As humans can easily notice whether a keyword appears in a sentence or not, our AVKT network can detect whether a video clip with a spoken sentence contains a pre‐specified keyword. Moreover, the position of the keyword is localised in the attention map without additional position labels. Exper- imental results on the LRS2‐KWS dataset and our newly collected PKU‐KWS dataset show that the accuracy of AVKT exceeded 99% in clean scenes and 85% in extremely noisy conditions. The code is available at https://github.com/jialeren/AVKT. CAAI Transactions on Intelligence Technology, 9 (1) ISSN:2468-2322

    Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can enhance the generation quality of large language models (LLMs) by incorporating external token databases. However, retrievals from large databases can constitute a substantial portion of the overall generation time, particularly when retrievals are periodically performed to align the retrieved content with the latest states of generation. In this paper, we introduce PipeRAG, a novel algorithm-system co-design approach to reduce generation latency and enhance generation quality. PipeRAG integrates (1) pipeline parallelism to enable concurrent retrieval and generation processes, (2) flexible retrieval intervals to maximize the efficiency of pipeline parallelism, and (3) a performance model to automatically balance retrieval quality and latency based on the generation states and underlying hardware. Our evaluation shows that, by combining the three aforementioned methods, PipeRAG achieves up to 2.6$\times$ speedup in end-to-end generation latency while improving generation quality. These promising results showcase the effectiveness of co-designing algorithms with underlying systems, paving the way for the adoption of PipeRAG in future RAG systems.

    Reminiscence is the act of recalling or telling others about relevant personal past experiences. It is an important activity for all individuals, young and old alike. In fact, reminiscence can serve different functions that can support or be detrimental to one's well-being. Although previous studies have extensively investigated older adults' recalling of autobiographical memories, the evidence for young adults remains scarce. Therefore, in this work, we analyze young adults' production of reminiscence and their functions with a naturalistic observation method. Furthermore, we demonstrate that natural language processing and machine learning can automatically detect reminiscence and its negative functions in young adults' everyday conversations. We interpret machine learning model results using Shapley explanations. Our results indicate that young adults reminisce in everyday life mostly to connect with others through conversation, to compensate for a lack of stimulation or to recall difficult past experiences. Moreover, our models improve existing benchmarks from the literature on the automated detection of older adults' reminiscence in everyday life. Finally, our results may support the development of digital health intervention programs that detect reminiscence and its functions in young adults to support their well-being. The authors present the results of radiocarbon dating of early medieval pottery from two furnaces discovered at Gródek on the Bug River, site 35. Dated by "traditional" methods, the pottery sits in the 11th c., but the 14C dates are earlier by roughly 150 years. In view of the unquestioned stratigraphy of the samples related to the pottery, the results presented here should be considered as a contribution to the discussion of pottery workshop development in eastern Poland, which apparently followed a different pattern than that examined so far only in relation to the western, Greater Poland center of the Piast state. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki datowania radiowęglowego wczesnośredniowiecznej ceramiki z dwóch pieców odkrytych na stanowisku nr 35 w Gródku nad Bugiem. „Tradycyjne” datowanie wskazuje na XI w., podczas gdy uzyskane daty 14C są o około 150 lat starsze. Stratygraficzny związek próbek i ceramiki nie budzi wątpliwości, należy zatem omawiane wyniki potraktować jako głos w dyskusji dotyczącej różnych rytmów przemian warsztatu garncarskiego na ziemiach Polski wschodniej, rozpatrywanych dotąd wyłącznie w odniesieniu do wielkopolskiego centrum państwa Piastów. The carbon isotopic signature inherited from soil and epikarst processes may be modified by degassing and prior calcite precipitation (PCP) before its imprint on speleothem calcite. Despite laboratory demonstration of PCP effects on carbon isotopes and increasingly sophisticated models of the governing processes, to date, there has been limited effort to deconvolve the dual PCP and soil-epikarst components in measured speleothem isotopic time series. In this contribution, we explore the feasibility, advantages, and disadvantages of using trace element ratios and δ⁴⁴Ca to remove the overprinting effect of PCP on measured δ¹³C to infer the temporal variations in the initial δ¹³C of drip water prior to degassing and PCP. In nine examined stalagmites, the most widely utilized PCP indicators Mg/Ca and δ⁴⁴Ca covary as expected. However, Srg/gCa does not show consistent relationships with δ⁴⁴Ca so PCP is not the dominant control on Srg/gCa. From δ⁴⁴Ca and Mg/Ca, our calculation of PCP as f_Ca, the fraction of initial Ca remaining in solution at the time the stalagmite layer is deposited, yields multiple viable solutions depending on the assumed δ⁴⁴Ca fractionation factor and inferred variation in DMg. Uncertainty in the effective fractionation of δ¹³C during degassing and precipitation contributes to uncertainty in the absolute value of estimated initial δ¹³C. Nonetheless, the trends in initial δ¹³C are less sensitive to these uncertainties. In coeval stalagmites from the same cave spanning the 94 to 82 ka interval, trends in calculated initial δ¹³C are more similar than those in measured δ¹³C and reveal a common positive-Anomaly initial δ¹³C during a stadial cooling event. During deglaciations, calculated initial δ¹³C implies a trend of greater respiration rates and higher soil CO₂, although the higher interglacial drip water saturation favors more extensive PCP. Initial δ¹³C can be estimated for active and fossil speleothems from a range of settings, wherever there is confidence that Mg/Ca and/or δ⁴⁴Ca provides a quantitative indication of past changes in PCP. Further study of Mg partitioning in speleothems will improve the robustness of Mg/Ca as a PCP proxy. Climate of the Past, 19 (12) ISSN:1814-9332 ISSN:1814-9324

    El Niño–Southern Oscillation dynamics affect global weather patterns, with regionally diverse hydrological responses posing critical societal challenges. The lack of seasonally resolved hydrological proxy reconstructions beyond the observational era limits our understanding of boundary conditions that drive and/or adjust El Niño–Southern Oscillation variability. Detailed reconstructions of past El Niño–Southern Oscillation dynamics can help modelling efforts, highlight impacts on disparate ecosystems and link to extreme events that affect populations from the tropics to high latitudes. Here, mid-Holocene El Niño–Southern Oscillation and hydrological changes are reconstructed in the south-west Pacific using a stalagmite from Niue Island, which represents the period 6.4–5.4 ka BP. Stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios, trace elements and greyscale data from a U/Th-dated and layer counted stalagmite profile are combined to infer changes in local hydrology at sub-annual to multi-decadal timescales. Principal component analysis reveals seasonal-scale hydrological changes expressed as variations in stalagmite growth patterns and geochemical characteristics. Higher levels of host rock-derived elements (Sr/Ca and U/Ca) and higher δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C values are observed in dark, dense calcite laminae deposited during the dry season, whereas during the wet season, higher concentrations of soil-derived elements (Zn/Ca and Mn/Ca) and lower δ¹⁸O and δ¹³C values are recorded in pale, porous calcite laminae. The multi-proxy record from Niue shows seasonal cycles associated with hydrological changes controlled by the positioning and strength of the South Pacific Convergence Zone. Wavelet analysis of the greyscale record reveals that El Niño–Southern Oscillation was continuously active during the mid-Holocene, with two weaker intervals at 6–5.9 and 5.6–5.5 ka BP. El Niño–Southern Oscillation especially affects dry season rainfall dynamics, with increased cyclone activity that reduces hydrological seasonality during El Niño years.     Wind-abraded cobbles (ventifacts) and aeolian sand are known from the sandy-gravelly coastal areas of south-western Sweden, especially in association with raised deltas. Ventifacts are recorded on at least two different stratigraphic levels, at some sites atop glaciofluvial sediment, at other sites atop littoral deposits, and in some places at both levels, while aeolian sand usually forms a surficial cover. The formation of ventifacts has usually been coupled to abrasion due to katabatic winds from the retreating ice sheet or with periglacial climate during the Younger Dryas stadial (12.8–11.7 ka). To determine the timing of these deflation events, we have applied a combination of dating methods to ventifacts and associated sediments on top of an ice-contact delta at Veinge, south-western Sweden. Quartz and feldspar luminescence dating as well as portable luminescence profiling has been used for littoral and aeolian sediments over- and underlying deflation surfaces, while rock surface luminescence burial dating and paired 14C–10Be cosmogenic nuclide dating were conducted on ventifacts. The results show that a first deflation event occurred c. 16.5 ka, just after deglaciation and prior to a regional transgression that peaked around 15.7 ka. At 12.4–11.4 ka, during the Younger Dryas stadial, a new set of ventifacts formed on the surface of the exposed littoral sands and gravels. Some wind abrasion also occurred in the early Holocene, but at c. 8.5 ka the surface was covered by aeolian sand, up to 2.5 m thick. The combination of different dating methods have allowed us to draw more informed conclusions on the timing and duration of these wind abrasion/transport events than would have been possible from the use of only single-method dating. It has also made it possible to infer some environmental conditions during deposition. For example, both glaciofluvial and littoral deposits show evidence of incomplete bleaching of the luminescence signal. This suggests short subaerial transport and brief reworking by waves, respectively, though bleaching conditions improved during shore regression. Rock surface burial luminescence profiles reveal that some ventifacts were repeatedly exposed, but that later event(s) were shorter in duration as indicated by quartz-feldspar age comparisons.     Authors: Fischer-Tiné, Harald; Naha, Souvik;
