No, but the paper argues that Bohr understood his correspondence principle, or at least an aspect of that principle expressed by the notion of rational generalization, as grounded in Hankel's principle of permanence, adapted to new historical and theoretical contexts. This is shown to illuminate some otherwise obscure aspects of Bohr's approach to quantum theory, as well as a seemingly strange criticism against this approach, due to Feyerabend and Bohm. 27 pages

Landscapes are socially produced and reproduced spaces. This is easily recognizable for large-scale urban groups with built environments that dominate living places. But it also pertains to all types of societies and cultures, even small-scale hunter–gatherers, once the ontological beliefs structuring landscape perception and use are acknowledged. The foragers of south–central and southern California and the Great Basin illustrate this fact. They maintained a widely shared ontological perspective supported by a fundamental cognitive postulate. This is that supernatural power, the principle causative agent in the universe, was differentially distributed among individuals and places. The distribution of power, revealed by certain geomorphological features and natural events, structured their perceptions of landscape. These perceptions were expressed in ritual and symbolism, including petroglyphs and pictographs as durable manifestations of ceremonies on the landscape. The ontological relationship between power and landscape explains a longstanding question in hunter–gatherer archaeology: Why were rock writing sites created at specific locations? It also explains another equally significant but rarely considered and related problem: Why do some localities have massive quantities of rock writings that dwarf most other sites? The landscape symbolism of and the placement of sites by Native Californian and Great Basin tribes is explained by reference to their shared ontological beliefs, illustrating how they structured their ritual practices and archaeological record.

Abstract Church construction was one of the most challenging, and most political, tasks undertaken by medieval cities. Comparing examples from across Europe reveals profound differences, however, in both the architecture of politics and the politics of architecture; that is, how building projects were administered and how their administration shaped their socio-political significance. Although ranging across the continent, this article is centered on construction in two representative cities: Vienna and London. While the former had a small number of churches, all under the direct control of the mayor and council, the latter had over a hundred, each overseen by locally appointed officers. In Vienna, church construction was, thus, an important field of activity for the city government, which oversaw the work and celebrated its own leadership of the project; in London, it lay outside civic control and offered local opportunities for domination by wealthy families. This difference can be found across the continent, separating the large, old cities of England, northern France, Spain, and the Low Countries, which could have numerous churches, from smaller towns and cities both in these places and across the rest of central, northern, and southern Europe, which typically had a single, major parish church and only a few subordinate ones. This article considers the implications of these two contrasting models—centralized and decentralized, civic and parochial, high government and local politics—on how architectural production functioned as a field of political activity and how church building shaped local distributions and articulations of power in medieval Europe.

ABSTRACTAuthigenic Mg‐calcite and dolomite are frequently observed in restricted, evaporative environments, such as lagoon or lake systems, but their formation is difficult to capture due to slow growth rates. Lake Neusiedl, an alkaline and subhaline lake with a mean water depth of 0.7 m in Austria, offers a natural system to study the precipitation of Ca‐Mg‐carbonate phases, which occur as fine‐grained, unconsolidated and largely homogenized mud. To elucidate the timing and formation mechanisms of these authigenic carbonate phases, the mineralogical and isotopic composition and radiocarbon age of different sediment grain‐size fractions from <0.2 to >3.0 μm were analysed. X‐ray diffraction analyses show two broad peaks of Mg‐calcite and protodolomite (lacking ordering peaks), suggesting that the carbonates are authigenic rather than detrital in origin. Calibrated carbon‐14 ages range between 200 cal yr bp and 3700 cal yr bp. The linear correlation of age and grain size suggests a very slow growth rate of single crystals of 0.23 to 0.60 μm/ka. These rates suggest an extremely slow sedimentation rate in a shallow lake that existed during most of the Holocene. The higher abundance of protodolomite in older grain fractions, in contrast to the presence of high‐Mg calcite in the youngest fractions, suggests a growth succession where high‐Mg calcite develops first and subsequently transforms into protodolomite. Much higher ages of 6 cal ka bp to 15 cal ka bp are measured in carbonates of lake deposits exposed on land, in a section north‐west of the recent lake, suggesting a growth rate of those carbonate minerals of 0.13 μm/ka. These time constraints further suggest that some carbonate grains could already have nucleated from lake water before or during the last glacial maximum, although under slightly different hydrochemical conditions.

This paper offers a detailed overview of the archeological data from the “Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum” (RRLN) project. It focuses on the less-explored northern and northeastern rural regions of Roman-period Noricum (c. 16/15 BC to 488 AD). The University of Vienna’s PHAIDRA system was employed for the long-term archiving of selected new archeological data, adhering to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. The project adopted an innovative digital archeology approach, combining open geodata with various unstructured datasets within a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. Accordingly, this method aimed to deepen our understanding of Roman rural landscapes in a specific Area of Interest (AoI). The paper highlights the selective preservation of crucial archeological data in a specialized repository and also promotes open science to improve the discoverability and usability of data related to Roman-period objects.

libEscansión is a state-of-the-art Python library for analysing Spanish mixed verses. It parses the verse to find syllabic nuclei, rhythmic pattern, assonance, and consonance, as well as to provide a phonological transcription of the syllables. It scores 98.64% accuracy against the manually annotated corpus [ADSO 100] with the option adso=True, which forces considering interjections as non-stressed to meet ADSO's annotation criteria. This tops the until-now state-of-the-art. Nevertheless, vanilla scansion – i.e., stressing interjections – still outperforms the state-of-the art, achieving 97.01% accuracy. Furthermore, after evaluating the corpus' manual scansion and spelling, we found that the disagreement was in most cases due to an improper spelling or even to non-standard human analysis (unstressed interjections, adverbd in -mente lacking secondary stress, etc.). With a corrected corpus, the agreement reaches 99.13 %, being the resting 0.87% non-erroneus disagreements.

Data citation plays a crucial role in Open Science, especially in diverse domains like cultural heritage. With its inherently interdisciplinary nature, establishing a robust methodology for data citation becomes essential. This methodology not only aids in identification and attribution but also fosters integration across disciplines. The ongoing project “A FAIR-enabling citation model for Cultural Heritage Objects”, funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 program, aims to design a sustainable and FAIR-enabled citation model for cultural heritage objects (CHO), emphasizing the multidimensional nature of citation within this context. Supported by EOSC Future and the Research Data Alliance, this project engages in a series of activities to develop and assess its citation model, leveraging specific case studies.

Das Projekt "Historische Buntpapiere an der UB Wien" wurde im Rahmen des Universitätslehrganges "Library and Information Studies" (Grundlehrgang 2022-2024) an der Universitätsbibliothek Wien durchgeführt. Buntpapier wird in der Buchproduktion als Bezugsmaterial für Einbände und als Vorsatz seit Jahrhunderten eingesetzt. Mitunter aufwändig künstlerisch gestaltet, gibt es eine Vielzahl an Techniken und Varianten. Das Projekt befasste sich mit der systematischen Erfassung von historischen Buntpapieren in Büchern der Fachbereichsbibliothek Kunstgeschichte und der Hauptbibliothek der UB Wien. Ausgangspunkt war die Annahme, dass zahlreiche Buntpapiere in den Büchern der UB Wien vorhanden sind. Diese wurden aber vor Projektbeginn nicht (systematisch) katalogisiert. Im Zuge des Projekts wurde ein Workflow erarbeitet und getestet, der die Autopsie der Bestände, die Eintragung von Buntpapierbeschreibungen im Bibliothekssystem Alma und die Digitalisierung der Einbände beinhaltet. Insgesamt wurden mehr als 260 Bucheinbände beschrieben; ausgewählte Buntpapiere wurden im Rahmen einer Ausstellung an der UB präsentiert.
