    Authors: Cottegnies, Line;

    La réception de La Princesse de Clèves en Angleterre témoigne d’une rencontre manquée. Traduit de manière anonyme dès 1679, le roman ne rencontre pas le succès attendu. Certes, cette traduction est rééditée en 1688, mais la réception du roman est contrariée par le grand succès de l’adaptation théâtrale très libre qu’en donne le dramaturge Nathaniel Lee en 1680 au Queen’s Theatre, et dont le texte est publié en 1689. Adaptée spécifiquement au goût de la Restauration, la pièce ne reprend que quelques scènes-clés du roman, et, si le Prince et la Princesse de Clèves sont à peu près conformes à leurs modèles, le Duc de Nemours est représenté sous les traits d’un libertin, à l’image des roués (« rakes »), qui peuplaient les comédies londoniennes depuis les années 1660. Le roman passe ici clairement au second plan. Cette adaptation théâtrale semble avoir brouillé la perception de La Princesse de Clèves en Angleterre, en constituant un filtre à son appréciation. Ce n’est qu’au XVIIIe siècle, presque un demi-siècle plus tard, à l’heure de la sensibilité triomphante, que la fiction de Mme de Lafayette connaît un regain d’intêrêt en Angleterre. La Princesse de Clèves, retraduite en 1720, est alors intégrée dans plusieurs recueils de romans continentaux publiés au cours du siècle. Cet article revient sur les raisons de ce décalage dans la réception de La Princesse de Clèves, en étudiant ce moment de l’histoire littéraire anglaise, vers 1680, où les romans français sont traduits par brassées. Faut-il expliquer l’accueil relativement réservé rencontré par La Princesse de Clèves au XVIIe siècle comme procédant de la différence entre un goût anglais et un goût français ? On montrera que si le roman a très certainement pâti du brouillage créé par l’adaptation théâtrale de la pièce de 1680 ou 1681, il représentait aussi une forme de roman difficilement transposable en Angleterre en 1679. The reception of La Princesse of Clèves in England bears witness to a failed encounter. Anonymously translated in 1679, the novel did not meet with the expected success. Although the translation was republished in 1688, the novel's reception was thwarted by the great success of the very free theatrical adaptation given by the playwright Nathaniel Lee in 1680 at Queen's Theatre, the text of which was published in 1689. Adapted specifically to the tastes of the Restoration, the play takes up only a few key scenes from the novel, and while the Prince and Princess of Cleves are more or less true to their models, the Duke of Nemours is portrayed as a libertine, in line with the “rakes” who had populated London comedies since the 1660s. This theatrical adaptation seems to have blurred the perception of the French novel in England, acting as a filter for its appreciation. It was not until the eighteenth century, almost half a century later, at a time when novels of sensibility became fashionable, that Mme de Lafayette's fiction enjoyed renewed interest in England. The Princess of Cleves, retranslated in 1720, was then included in several collections of continental novels published over the course of the century. This article looks at the reasons for this gap in the reception of La Princesse de Clèves, by studying the moment in English literary history, around 1680, when French novels were translated by the dozens. Should we explain the relatively lukewarm reception of La Princesse of Clèves in the seventeenth century as a result of the difference between English and French tastes? This article shows that while the novel certainly suffered from the confusion created by the theatrical adaptation of the play in 1680 or 1681, it also represented a form of novel that was difficult to transpose to England in 1679.

    Este trabajo busca analizar las emociones que acompañaron los procesos identitarios de los españoles instalados en Francia. Se tratará así de entender en qué medida y de qué manera los afectos y sensibilidades de estos emigrantes influyeron, no solamente en la manera en la que estos construyeron su identidad de español expatriado sino en cómo estos (re)pensaron sus estrategias migratorias durante su estancia en el país vecino.

    Reasoning by analogies permeates theoretical developments in physics and astrophysics, motivated by the unreachable nature of many phenomena at play. For example, analogies have been used to understand black hole physics, leading to the development of a thermodynamic theory for these objects and the discovery of the Hawking effect. The latter, which results from quantum field theory on black hole space-times, changed the way physicists approached this subject: what had started as a mere aid to understanding becomes a possible source of evidence via the research programme of `analogue gravity' that builds on analogue models for field effects. Some of these analogue models may and can be realised in the laboratory, allowing experimental tests of field effects. Here, we present a historical perspective on the connection between the Hawking effect and analogue models. We also present a literature review of current research, bringing history and contemporary physics together. We argue that the history of analogue gravity and the Hawking effect is divided into three distinct phases based on how and why analogue models have been used to investigate fields in the vicinity of black holes. Furthermore, we find that modern research signals a transition to a new phase, where the impetus for the use of analogue models has surpassed the problem they were originally designed to solve. Comment: Version accepted for publication in special issue of EPJH on modern developments in quantum theory

    Authors: Huleux, François;

    La diversité biologique connaît un schéma d'érosion face auquel la communauté internationale tente de lutter. Depuis quelques années, les communautés locales et autochtones sont reconnues comme un modèle de conservation et d'utilisation durable de cette diversité. Elles recréent, expriment et transmettent des connaissances et pratiques de gestion des ressources naturelles depuis des temps immémoriaux pour certaines. En 2003, la Convention pour la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel immatériel (ci-après « Convention PCI ») est adoptée afin de préserver ce patrimoine qui est lui aussi sur le point de disparaître en raison de l'acculturation, la mondialisation, la déforestation, etc. Malgré la relation d’interdépendance qui caractérise certains éléments du patrimoine culturel immatériel (ci-après « PCI ») avec les éléments matériels naturels auxquels ils sont associés, la Convention ne guide pas ses Parties vers la reconnaissance et préservation de cette relation. Plus précisément, elle ne guide pas ses Parties vers la conservation et l’utilisation durable de l’ensemble des éléments de la biodiversité nécessaires à la sauvegarde du PCI (réseau de vie). C’est pourquoi, certains pourraient s’interroger sur la capacité de la Convention PCI à sauvegarder le PCI associé à la biodiversité ? A l’heure de l’extinction des espèces et de la raréfaction des connaissances et pratiques « traditionnelles », il apparaît primordial de faire évoluer la mise en œuvre de la Convention par une révision de ses Directives opérationnelles chargées de préciser les engagements des Parties et régulièrement amendées par le Comité intergouvernemental de sauvegarde du PCI et l’Assemblé générale des États parties à la Convention vers une sauvegarde mieux adaptée au PCI associé à la biodiversité. L’approche par écosystème développée sous l’empire de la Convention sur la diversité biologique (ci-après « CDB ») dont les objectifs sont la conservation, l’utilisation durable de la biodiversité et le partage juste et équitable des avantages découlant de l’utilisation des ressources naturelles sert de base à cette proposition de révision des directives de la Convention PCI. L’approche permet de gérer des écosystèmes considérés comme des réseaux de vie dont les Hommes et la diversité culturelle sont un élément à part entière. The international community is trying to fight the current pattern of biodiversity erosion. In recent years, local and indigenous communities have been recognized as models in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. Some of them have been recreating, expressing and transmitting knowledge and natural resources management practices for centuries. In 2003, the Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage (hereinafter “ICH Convention”) was adopted in order to preserve this heritage, which is also on the verge of disappearing due to acculturation, globalization, deforestation, etc. Despite the interdependent relationship which characterizes certain elements of intangible cultural heritage (hereinafter “ICH”) with the natural material elements associated to it, the Convention does not guide its Parties towards the recognition and preservation of this unique relationship. More specifically, it does not guide them towards the conservation and sustainable use of the elements of biodiversity that are necessary to the safeguarding of ICH (considered as a network of life). This is why, some might question the capacity of the ICH Convention to safeguard ICH associated with biodiversity? At a time when species and tradition knowledge and practices are going extinct, it is essential to refine the implementation of the Convention by a revision of its Operational Directives responsible for specifying the commitments of the Parties – and which are regularly amended by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of ICH and the General Assemble of State Parties to the Convention – towards a better suited safeguarding of ICH associated with biodiversity. The ecosystem approach developed for the implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (hereinafter “CBD”) – whose objectives are the conservation, sustainable use of biodiversity and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits obtained from the use of natural resources – is the basis for this proposal to revise the Operation Directives of the ICH Convention. This approach allows the sustainable management of ecosystems considered as being networks of life including humans and their biodiversity.

    We describe the most recent energy density functional derived within the quark meson coupling model. Although fit to the binding energies and charge radii of just seventy magic nuclei, the accuracy with which it reproduces nuclear properties across the entire periodic table is outstanding. As well as outlining a number of those results, we present an argument explaining why having a physically motivated model with a small number of parameters is especially desirable as one seeks to make predictions in new regions of N and Z. As an example we show the predictions for known super-heavy nuclei that were not included in the fit. Contribution to INPC2022

    Les hommages à l'énigmatique dea Dard(…) manifestent une volonté typiquementromaine de signaler son respect d’une divinité locale, dans le cadre du contrôle dezones isolées mais stratégiques au cœur de la région illyrienne et de la province deMésie supérieure. Ces actes de piété traduisent une volonté des autorités romaines deconduire une action diplomatique auprès des populations locales, particulièrement auxabords des stationes parfois fort éloignées des légions et des officia dont ellesconstituaient un détachement. Ces dédicaces ne sauraient en tous les cas êtreconsidérées comme les preuves irréfutables de la résistance d’une identitédardanienne face à l’ordre romain. Elles laissent entendre bien-entendu que le culte deces divinités locales dont le nom nous échappe, avait survécu au cœur de la provincede Mésie supérieure. Le paradoxe tient au fait que nous connaissons mieux l’existencede ces divinités locales grâce aux hommages de militaires romains The tributes to the enigmatic dea Dard(...) show a typically Roman desire to signal one's respectfor a local deity, within the framework of the control of isolated but strategic areas in the heartof the Illyrian region and the province of Moesia superioris. These acts of piety reflect the desireon the part of the Roman authorities to carry out diplomatic action with the local population,particularly in the vicinity of the stationes, often away from the legions and officia of whichthey were a detachment. In any case, these dedications cannot be considered as irrefutable proofof the resistance of a Dardanian identity to the Roman order. They do, of course, suggest thatthe cult of these local and enigmatic deities had survived in the heart of the province of Moesiasuperioris. The paradox lies in the fact that we know more about the existence of these localdeities thanks to the tributes of Roman soldiers, even if their names remain unknown.

    Based on a formalism introduced in our previous work, we reconstruct the phenomenological function $G_{\rm eff}(z)$ describing deviations from General Relativity (GR) in a model-independent manner. In this alternative approach, we model $\mu\equiv G_\mathrm{eff}/G$ as a Gaussian process and use forecasted growth-rate measurements from a stage-IV survey to reconstruct its shape for two different toy models. We follow a two-step procedure: (i) we first reconstruct the background expansion history from Supernovae (SNe) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements; (ii) we then use it to obtain the growth history $f\sigma_8$, that we fit to redshift-space distortions (RSD) measurements to reconstruct $G_\mathrm{eff}$. We find that upcoming surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) might be capable of detecting deviations from GR, provided the dark energy behavior is accurately determined. We might even be able to constrain the transition redshift from $G\to G_\mathrm{eff}$ for some particular models. We further assess the impact of massive neutrinos on the reconstructions of $G_\mathrm{eff}$ (or $\mu$) assuming the expansion history is given, and only the neutrino mass is free to vary. Given the tight constraints on the neutrino mass, and for the profiles we considered in this work, we recover numerically that the effect of such massive neutrinos does not alter our conclusions. Finally, we stress that incorrectly assuming a $\Lambda$CDM expansion history leads to a degraded reconstruction of $\mu$, and/or a non-negligible bias in the ($\Omega_\mathrm{m,0}$,$\sigma_{8,0}$)-plane. Le site du Moutot à Lavau (Aube), fouillé sur 2 hectares par l’Inrap en 2014-2015, correspond à un complexe funéraire monumental occupé à plusieurs reprises, entre le Hallstatt A1 et la fin de l’Antiquité. Il se caractérise d’abord par sa stratigraphie, obligeant à un décapage délicat et au relevé de grandes longueurs de coupe. La conservation partielle de plusieurs élévations tumulaires a permis l’appréhension des pratiques et de l’architecture funéraires sur le temps long. De manière inattendue, la fouille a permis de documenter une exceptionnelle tombe princière du Ve siècle avant notre ère, dont l’étude a nécessité une adaptation technique et méthodologique constante. Fouille de longue haleine, partagée entre les recherches menées sous abri et sur plateaux mobiles de la tombe du prince et l’examen tous azimuts de son contexte, l’opération de Lavau constitue aujourd’hui un cas unique dans le paysage de la recherche. The site of Moutot at Lavau (Aube), where a surface of two hectares was excavated by Inrap in 2014-2015, is a funerary monumental complex occupied on several occasions, between Hallstatt A1 and the end of Antiquity. It is remarkable above all for its stratigraphy, which has forced archaeologists to carry out delicate scraping and removal of the surface, and to draw sections of great length. The partial preservation of several elevations of tumuli allowed understanding grave practices and architecture over a long period of time. Unexpectedly, excavation permitted the documentation of an exceptional princely tomb of the 5th century BCE, whose study required constant technical and methodological adaptation. The excavation at Lavau is long-term endeavour with research carried out under a shelter and work on mobile flooring on the prince’s tomb, as well as full-scale examination of its context. It forms a unique case in the landscape of research. El yacimiento de Moutot en Lavau (departamento de Aube), donde el Inrap llevó a cabo una excavación sobre un área de 2 hectáreas entre 2014 y 2015, es un complejo funerario monumental habitado en numerosas ocasiones entre el Hallstatt A1 y fines de la Antigüedad. El sitio se caracteriza primeramente por su estratigrafía, que requiere un decapado delicado y el registro de largas franjas. La conservación parcial de varias elevaciones de túmulos ha llevado a aprehender las prácticas y la arquitectura funerarias en el largo plazo. Asimismo y de forma inesperada, la excavación ha permitido documentar una excepcional tumba principesca del siglo V antes de nuestra era, cuyo estudio requirió una constante adaptación técnica y metodológica. La operación arqueológica de Lavau —trabajo de largo aliento repartido entre los análisis de la tumba realizados a cubierto y sobre plataformas móviles, y el estudio de su contexto en todos los niveles— constituye un caso único en el panorama actual de la investigación.

    Authors: Elisa Andretta; José Pardo-Tomás;

    L'article est inscrit dans une recherche de long cours sur les pratiques et les politiques de la nature qui se sont définies entre les péninsules ibérique et italienne entre les années 1540 et 1550. Il se focalise sur le contexte de conservation et d’utilisation de quatre volumes d'herbiers appartenus à l'ambassadeur et savant espagnol Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, pour étudier plus en profondeur les modes de production de savoir sur la nature que cet objet de savoir complexe incarnait et qu'il contribua a en même temps à construire. Tout d'abord, l'article vise à montrer comment l'herbier pouvait constituer un outil d'archivage et d'étude qui trouvait son origine dans une artificialisation de la nature, le résultat d’un travail collectif au croisement entre le savoir-faire artisanal et les pratiques textuelles. Il décrit une méthode d’enquête qui comprend à la fois la manipulation de l'objet matériel sur le terrain et dans le cabinet et une pratique d’annotation, basée sur la consultation de manuscrits et d'imprimés dans une bibliothèque. En outre, grâce à l’étude des inventaires de la bibliothèque-cabinet de Diego Hurtado de Mendoza et de la correspondance de certains membres de son cercle, nous avons tenté de resituer cet objet dans ce lieu de savoir où il était conservé. El redescubrimiento de los herbarios de Diego Hurtado de Mendoza en la Biblioteca de El Escorial permite ofrecer una mirada diferente a la biblioteca del aristócrata, diplomático, coleccionista y poeta granadino. Cuando su biblioteca pasó a manos de Felipe II, tras la muerte de Mendoza en 1575, los herbarios se incorporaron al programa cultural, político y artístico que se estaba creando en torno al monasterio-palacio-mausoleo. Este artículo pretende proponer una nueva mirada a estos herbarios situándolos en los dos contextos culturales en los que vivieron, el de su producción y el de su recepción. Ambos contextos se basaron no sólo en la biblioteca mendocina como espacio de construcción de conocimiento sobre el mundo natural, sino también desempeñando diferentes roles dentro de una biblioteca que se había movido entre Italia (Venecia, Trento, Padua, Bolonia, Roma) y España (Granada, Madrid, El Escorial) a lo largo de cuatro décadas decisivas para el futuro de la Monarquía Católica.     Authors: Haran, Julien; Kergoat, Gael J.; de Medeiros, Bruno;

    In tropical environments, and especially tropical rainforests, a major part of pollination services is provided by diverse insect lineages. Unbeknownst to most, beetles, and more specifically hyperdiverse weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea), play a substantial role there as specialist mutualist brood pollinators. The latter contrasts with a common view where they are only regarded as plant antagonists. This study aims at giving a comprehensive understanding of what is known on plant-weevil brood-site mutualistic interactions, through a review of the known behavioral, morphological and physiological features found in these systems, and the identification of potential knowledge gaps to fill. To date, plant-weevil associations have been described or indicated in no less than 600 instances. Representatives of major plant lineages are involved in these interactions, which have emerged independently at least a dozen times. Strikingly, these mutualistic interactions are associated with a range of convergent traits in plants and weevils. Plants engaged in weevil-mediated pollination are generally of typical cantharophilous type exhibiting large, white and fragrant flowers or inflorescences and they also show specific structures to host the larval stages of their specialist pollinators. Another characteristic feature is that flowers often perform thermogenesis and exhibit a range of strategies to separate sexual phases, either spatially or temporally. Conversely, lineages of brood-site weevil pollinators present numerous shared behavioral and physiological traits, and often form multispecific assemblages of closely related species on a single host; recent studies also revealed that they generally display a high degree of phylogenetic niche conservatism. This pollination mutualism occurs in all tropical regions, and the contrasts between the known and expected diversity of these systems suggests that a wide range of interactions remain to be described globally. Our early estimates of the species richness of the corresponding weevil clades and the marked pattern of phylogenetic niche conservatism of host use further suggest that weevil-based pollination far exceeds the diversity of other brood-site mutualistic systems, which are generally restricted to one or a few groups of plants. As such, weevil pollinators constitute a relevant model to explore the emergence and evolution of specialized brood-site pollination systems in the tropics. Review manuscript submitted to PCI Ecology.

    Authors: Cottegnies, Line;

    Authors: Huleux, François;

Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. D

    Le site du Moutot à Lavau (Aube), fouillé sur 2 hectares par l’Inrap en 2014-2015, correspond à un complexe funéraire monumental occupé à plusieurs reprises, entre le Hallstatt A1 et la fin de l’Antiquité. Il se caractérise d’abord par sa stratigraphie, obligeant à un décapage délicat et au relevé de grandes longueurs de coupe. La conservation partielle de plusieurs élévations tumulaires a permis l’appréhension des pratiques et de l’architecture funéraires sur le temps long. De manière inattendue, la fouille a permis de documenter une exceptionnelle tombe princière du Ve siècle avant notre ère, dont l’étude a nécessité une adaptation technique et méthodologique constante. Fouille de longue haleine, partagée entre les recherches menées sous abri et sur plateaux mobiles de la tombe du prince et l’examen tous azimuts de son contexte, l’opération de Lavau constitue aujourd’hui un cas unique dans le paysage de la recherche. The site of Moutot at Lavau (Aube), where a surface of two hectares was excavated by Inrap in 2014-2015, is a funerary monumental complex occupied on several occasions, between Hallstatt A1 and the end of Antiquity. It is remarkable above all for its stratigraphy, which has forced archaeologists to carry out delicate scraping and removal of the surface, and to draw sections of great length. The partial preservation of several elevations of tumuli allowed understanding grave practices and architecture over a long period of time. Unexpectedly, excavation permitted the documentation of an exceptional princely tomb of the 5th century BCE, whose study required constant technical and methodological adaptation. The excavation at Lavau is long-term endeavour with research carried out under a shelter and work on mobile flooring on the prince’s tomb, as well as full-scale examination of its context. It forms a unique case in the landscape of research. El yacimiento de Moutot en Lavau (departamento de Aube), donde el Inrap llevó a cabo una excavación sobre un área de 2 hectáreas entre 2014 y 2015, es un complejo funerario monumental habitado en numerosas ocasiones entre el Hallstatt A1 y fines de la Antigüedad. El sitio se caracteriza primeramente por su estratigrafía, que requiere un decapado delicado y el registro de largas franjas. La conservación parcial de varias elevaciones de túmulos ha llevado a aprehender las prácticas y la arquitectura funerarias en el largo plazo. Asimismo y de forma inesperada, la excavación ha permitido documentar una excepcional tumba principesca del siglo V antes de nuestra era, cuyo estudio requirió una constante adaptación técnica y metodológica. La operación arqueológica de Lavau —trabajo de largo aliento repartido entre los análisis de la tumba realizados a cubierto y sobre plataformas móviles, y el estudio de su contexto en todos los niveles— constituye un caso único en el panorama actual de la investigación.

    Authors: Elisa Andretta; José Pardo-Tomás;

    L'article est inscrit dans une recherche de long cours sur les pratiques et les politiques de la nature qui se sont définies entre les péninsules ibérique et italienne entre les années 1540 et 1550. Il se focalise sur le contexte de conservation et d’utilisation de quatre volumes d'herbiers appartenus à l'ambassadeur et savant espagnol Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, pour étudier plus en profondeur les modes de production de savoir sur la nature que cet objet de savoir complexe incarnait et qu'il contribua a en même temps à construire. Tout d'abord, l'article vise à montrer comment l'herbier pouvait constituer un outil d'archivage et d'étude qui trouvait son origine dans une artificialisation de la nature, le résultat d’un travail collectif au croisement entre le savoir-faire artisanal et les pratiques textuelles. Il décrit une méthode d’enquête qui comprend à la fois la manipulation de l'objet matériel sur le terrain et dans le cabinet et une pratique d’annotation, basée sur la consultation de manuscrits et d'imprimés dans une bibliothèque. En outre, grâce à l’étude des inventaires de la bibliothèque-cabinet de Diego Hurtado de Mendoza et de la correspondance de certains membres de son cercle, nous avons tenté de resituer cet objet dans ce lieu de savoir où il était conservé. El redescubrimiento de los herbarios de Diego Hurtado de Mendoza en la Biblioteca de El Escorial permite ofrecer una mirada diferente a la biblioteca del aristócrata, diplomático, coleccionista y poeta granadino. Cuando su biblioteca pasó a manos de Felipe II, tras la muerte de Mendoza en 1575, los herbarios se incorporaron al programa cultural, político y artístico que se estaba creando en torno al monasterio-palacio-mausoleo. Este artículo pretende proponer una nueva mirada a estos herbarios situándolos en los dos contextos culturales en los que vivieron, el de su producción y el de su recepción. Ambos contextos se basaron no sólo en la biblioteca mendocina como espacio de construcción de conocimiento sobre el mundo natural, sino también desempeñando diferentes roles dentro de una biblioteca que se había movido entre Italia (Venecia, Trento, Padua, Bolonia, Roma) y España (Granada, Madrid, El Escorial) a lo largo de cuatro décadas decisivas para el futuro de la Monarquía Católica.     Authors: Haran, Julien; Kergoat, Gael J.; de Medeiros, Bruno;
