The dataset contains the processed and analysed research data from the research project 'Policy-making of early nature conservation. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom compared, 1930-1960', funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 832350.The dataset contains the Data Management Plan, the researcher's notes on literature and archival sources, and export files for his full literature reference system (also including notes, summaries etc.). This collection contains raw data in MEG-BIDS format. The purpose is to allow re-use of the data in different projects. Original publication abstract: The possibility to combine smaller units of meaning (e.g., words) to create new and more complex meanings (e.g., phrases and sentences) is a fundamental feature of human language. In the present project, we investigated how the brain supports the semantic and syntactic composition of two-word adjective-noun phrases in Dutch, using magnetoencephalography (MEG). The present investigation followed up on previous studies reporting a composition effect in the left anterior temporal lobe (LATL) when comparing neural activity at nouns combined with adjectives, as opposed to nouns in a non-compositional context. The first aim of the present study was to investigate whether this effect, as well as its modulation by noun specificity and adjective class, can also be observed in Dutch. A second aim was to investigate to what extent these effects may be driven by syntactic composition rather than primarily by semantic composition as was previously proposed. To this end, a novel condition was administered in which participants saw nouns combined with pseudowords lacking meaning but agreeing with the nouns in terms of grammatical gender, as real adjectives would. We failed to observe a composition effect or its modulation in both a confirmatory analysis (focused on the cortical region and time-window where it has previously been reported) and in exploratory analyses (where we tested multiple regions and an extended potential time-window of the effect). A syntactically driven composition effect was also not observed in our data. We do, however, successfully observe an independent, previously reported effect on single word processing in our data, confirming that our MEG data processing pipeline does meaningfully capture language processing activity by the brain. The failure to observe the composition effect in LATL is surprising given that it has been previously reported in multiple studies. Reviewing all previous studies investigating this effect, we propose that materials and a task involving imagery might be necessary for this effect to be observed. In addition, we identified substantial variability in the regions of interest analysed in previous studies, which warrants additional checks of robustness of the effect. This dataset contains the data that is used in:Struik, Tara and Ans van Kemenade. Information structure and OV word order in Old and Middle English: a phase-based approach. To appear in Journal of Comparative Germanic LinguisticsThe history of English is characterised by variation in the position of the object with the regard to the verb. Where Present-day English only allows VO word orders, earlier stages display a significant number of OV structures as well, which are lost after the 13th century. It has frequently been suggested that this variation is influenced by information structure. We test the hypothesis that OV orders are the result of the discourse-givenness of the object. Our understanding of what fuels this variation feeds the formal analysis that is proposed; OV orders are derived from a VO base. The syntactic trigger to move objects leftward is lost.The hypothesis was tested by retrieving subclauses with a finite verb, a non-finite verb and a direct object from historical English corpora (850-1570). The objects in the Old English and early Middle English period were subsequently annotated for information structure and length. This dataset contains the datafiles, divided by period. Translations are included in separate datafiles. Non-referential objects are included in separate datafiles. This experimental study assessed if specific existential conditions motivate narrative processing of tragic entertainment about loss. Participants were assigned to a 3 (MSS: Mortality Salience of Self vs. MSLO: Mortality Salience of Loved One vs. No Mortality Control) X 2 (Tragic Entertainment: Moderate vs. High Eudaimonic Quality) factorial design (N=187). We measured death thought accessibility and mixed affect as intermediate processes, and boundary expansion of the self-concept and identification as measures of narrative processing. This dataset is a revised version of the touched by tragedy dataset that was registered in 2019 (Das & te Hennepe, 2019). The present version is identical to the previous dataset, but includes two additional composite scales (MC_moving and MC_Elevating) and two additional (recoded) numeric variables for education and nationality.

The dataset presented here includes sculptural portraits of Roman emperors (mostly carved from marble or casted in bronze) that were collected for the purposes of analyzing the representation of Roman emperors in freestanding sculpture as part of the NWO funded research project "Constraints and Tradition: Roman Power in Changing Societies" (2017-2021). The dataset consists of processed data. Entries in the dataset were collected using museum catalogues and archaeological/art-historical reports. The dataset includes portrait heads (when applicable: together with their accompanying body and base) and provides detailed information on their provenance, formal features, iconography, context.

This dataset contains data on population, prices, wages, coffee production, amount of land under plantations and tax data used to compute inequality for the regions of West Sumatra and Priangan (West Java) during the period 1800-1940. The data is used in the publication entitled: "Globalization, Inequality and Institutions in West Sumatra and West Java, c. 1800-1940".
