Research data keyboard_double_arrow_right Dataset 2021 EnglishPublisher:PANGAEA Funded by:EC | PAST4FUTURE, EC | TRACEEC| PAST4FUTURE ,EC| TRACEBurgay, Francois; Spolaor, Andrea; Gabrieli, Jacopo; Cozzi, Giulio; Turetta, Clara; Vallelonga, Paul T; Barbante, Carlo;In this dataset, we present Fe, Na and Ca concentration and fluxes retrieved from the North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling (NEEM) ice core project, covering the last 108 kyrs. The sampling resolution was 110 cm. To ensure an effective dissolution of Fe particles, samples were acidified to pH 1 using Suprapure nitric acid and stored at room temperature for 1 month before the analysis. The ice samples were analyzed with an Inductively Coupled Plasma Single Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer equipped with a quartz Scott spray chamber. Limits of Detection, calculated as three times the standard deviation of the blanks, were 0.8 µg L-1 for 57Fe, 1 µg L-1 for Ca and 3 µg L-1 for Na. Our results show that Holocene Fe fluxes (0.042 -11.7 kyr b2k, 0.5 mg m-2 yr-1) at the NEEM site were four times lower than the average recorded over the last glacial period (11.7– 108 kyr b2k, 2.0 mg m-2 yr-1), while they were greater during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 14.5 – 26.5 kyr b2k, 3.6 mg m-2 yr-1) and Marine Isotope Stage 4 (MIS 4, 60 - 71 kyr b2k, 5.8 mg m-2 yr-1). We present Fe, Ca and Na concentration and fluxes. Dating (GICC05modelext-NEEM-1) and accumulation data are from Rasmussen et al., 2013.

The chronology is based on 17 U-Th ages (Warken et al., 2021) calculated with the half lives of Cheng et al., 2013. The age-depth model was constructed using the algorithm COPRA (Breitenbach et al., 2012).

In order to assess both spatial and temporal variability at submesoscale range, a section consisting in 6-7 oceanographic stations, separated ~4 km (25 km in total), was entirely sampled every 24 h, during a 96 h period (there are no data for 72h). At each station conductivity, temperature, density and fluorescence were determined from surface to 200 m, including the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) by means of CTD mounted onto an oceanographic rosette equipped with six Niskin bottles of 12 L.

The age-depth models were established from mostly Intcal20-calibrated radiocarbon datings with a predefined parameter setting. 1032 sites are located in North America, 1075 sites in Europe, 488 sites in Asia. In the Southern Hemisphere, there are 150 sites in South America, 54 in Africa, and 32 in the Indopacific region. Datings, mostly C14, were retrieved from the Neotoma Paleoecology Database (https://www.neotomadb.org/), with additional data from Cao et al. (2020; https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-12-119-2020), Cao et al. (2013, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.revpalbo.2013.02.003) and our own collection. The related age records were revised by applying a similar approach, i.e., using the Bayesian age-depth modeling routine in R-BACON software. We complement the data publication by providing the source information on the references (most data are related to Neotoma) as a table linked to each Dataset ID. The data set and site IDs are from Neotoma if the data sets are derived from the Neotoma repository. In case of our own data collection efforts (Cao et al. (2020), Cao et al. (2013) and our own data), we used the already published PANGAEA event names in case they are related to the data or created our own site names with referencing to geographical regions similar to the Neotoma data naming principle.

Multiple independent samples were taken and measured for each depth at each core. The aim was to be able to estimate the heterogeneity in age between small samples of foraminifera from the same depth and core. Radiocarbon dating was performed by Accelerated Mass Spectrometry (AMS) using a Mini Carbon Dating System (MICADAS) (Wacker et al. 2010) at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany, using a gas target and following standard operating procedures. Blanks were processed and correction performed according to a procedure in Sun et al. (2020).

In recent decades, reports of C. sowerbii have drastically increased in Europe, North and South America, Australia, Asia, and parts of Africa. However, the worldwide distribution of C. sowerbii remains poorly documented due to the lack of information in various aquatic environments. This dataset globalises the occurrences of this species from an extensive literature review and database review. Information extracted from the literature/database were organised and synthesised according to specific criteria, such as geographic area (continent and country), GPS coordinates, habitat types (i.e., closed/open, artificial/natural, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, etc.). To understand the altitude ranges of C. sowerbii, altitude data were extracted from the elevation layer downloaded from WorldClim (http://www.worldclim.org/; accessed in June 2021) using QGIS version 3.16.3 software.

Deposit WMM7 (sometimes called Antarctic mumiyo) was collected at -71.367 degN, 13.317 degE during the GeoMaud expedition (1995/1996), from the Untersee Oasis, Dronning Maud Land. The aim of the analysis is to investigate snow petrel diet during the Last Glacial stage (22-29 ka) and in turn to infer changing sea-ice conditions in the South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (McClymont et al., Climate of the Past Discussions, submitted). The data include results from non-destructive XRF scanning (ITRAX core scanner, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, U.K.), fatty acid distributions and fatty acid stable isotope ratios (Department of Geography, Durham University, Durham, U.K.) and bulk stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University, Durham, U.K.). The age-depth model is constrained by 6 new bulk radiocarbon measurements (CologneAMS, Cologne, Germany).

The sampling resolution was 110 cm. To ensure an effective dissolution of Fe particles, samples were acidified to pH 1 using Suprapure nitric acid and stored at room temperature for 1 month before the analysis. The ice samples were analyzed with an Inductively Coupled Plasma Single Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer equipped with a quartz Scott spray chamber. Limits of Detection, calculated as three times the standard deviation of the blanks, were 0.8 µg L-1 for 57Fe, 1 µg L-1 for Ca and 3 µg L-1 for Na. Our results show that Holocene Fe fluxes (0.042 -11.7 kyr b2k, 0.5 mg m-2 yr-1) at the NEEM site were four times lower than the average recorded over the last glacial period (11.7– 108 kyr b2k, 2.0 mg m-2 yr-1), while they were greater during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, 14.5 – 26.5 kyr b2k, 3.6 mg m-2 yr-1) and Marine Isotope Stage 4 (MIS 4, 60 - 71 kyr b2k, 5.8 mg m-2 yr-1). We present Fe, Ca and Na concentration and fluxes. Dating (GICC05modelext-NEEM-1) and accumulation data are from Rasmussen et al., 2013.

In order to assess both spatial and temporal variability at submesoscale range, a section consisting in 6-7 oceanographic stations, separated ~4 km (25 km in total), was entirely sampled every 24 h, during a 96 h period (there are no data for 72h). At each station conductivity, temperature, density and fluorescence were determined from surface to 200 m, including the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) by means of CTD mounted onto an oceanographic rosette equipped with six Niskin bottles of 12 L.

The age-depth models were established from mostly Intcal20-calibrated radiocarbon datings with a predefined parameter setting. 1032 sites are located in North America, 1075 sites in Europe, 488 sites in Asia. In the Southern Hemisphere, there are 150 sites in South America, 54 in Africa, and 32 in the Indopacific region. Datings, mostly C14, were retrieved from the Neotoma Paleoecology Database (https://www.neotomadb.org/), with additional data from Cao et al. (2020; https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-12-119-2020), Cao et al. (2013, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.revpalbo.2013.02.003) and our own collection. The related age records were revised by applying a similar approach, i.e., using the Bayesian age-depth modeling routine in R-BACON software. We complement the data publication by providing the source information on the references (most data are related to Neotoma) as a table linked to each Dataset ID. The data set and site IDs are from Neotoma if the data sets are derived from the Neotoma repository. In case of our own data collection efforts (Cao et al. (2020), Cao et al. (2013) and our own data), we used the already published PANGAEA event names in case they are related to the data or created our own site names with referencing to geographical regions similar to the Neotoma data naming principle.

Multiple independent samples were taken and measured for each depth at each core. The aim was to be able to estimate the heterogeneity in age between small samples of foraminifera from the same depth and core. Radiocarbon dating was performed by Accelerated Mass Spectrometry (AMS) using a Mini Carbon Dating System (MICADAS) (Wacker et al. 2010) at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany, using a gas target and following standard operating procedures. Blanks were processed and correction performed according to a procedure in Sun et al. (2020).

In recent decades, reports of C. sowerbii have drastically increased in Europe, North and South America, Australia, Asia, and parts of Africa. However, the worldwide distribution of C. sowerbii remains poorly documented due to the lack of information in various aquatic environments. This dataset globalises the occurrences of this species from an extensive literature review and database review. Information extracted from the literature/database were organised and synthesised according to specific criteria, such as geographic area (continent and country), GPS coordinates, habitat types (i.e., closed/open, artificial/natural, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, etc.). To understand the altitude ranges of C. sowerbii, altitude data were extracted from the elevation layer downloaded from WorldClim (http://www.worldclim.org/; accessed in June 2021) using QGIS version 3.16.3 software.

Deposit WMM7 (sometimes called Antarctic mumiyo) was collected at -71.367 degN, 13.317 degE during the GeoMaud expedition (1995/1996), from the Untersee Oasis, Dronning Maud Land. The aim of the analysis is to investigate snow petrel diet during the Last Glacial stage (22-29 ka) and in turn to infer changing sea-ice conditions in the South Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (McClymont et al., Climate of the Past Discussions, submitted). The data include results from non-destructive XRF scanning (ITRAX core scanner, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, U.K.), fatty acid distributions and fatty acid stable isotope ratios (Department of Geography, Durham University, Durham, U.K.) and bulk stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University, Durham, U.K.). The age-depth model is constrained by 6 new bulk radiocarbon measurements (CologneAMS, Cologne, Germany).
