A high-resolution (1-meter) tree canopy assessment was completed for the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. Mapping of existing and potential tree canopy is critical for urban tree management at the landscape level. This classification was created from combined 2015 aerial imagery, LIDAR data, and ancillary thematic layers. These data sets were integrated using an Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach through multi-resolution image segmentation and an iterative set of classification commands in the form of customized rulesets. eCognition Developer was used to develop the rulesets and produce raster classification products for TCMA. The results were evaluated using randomly placed and independent verified assessment points. The classification product was analyzed at regional scales to compare distributions of tree canopy spatially and at different resolutions. The combination of spectral data and LiDAR through an OBIA method helped to improve the overall accuracy results providing more aesthetically pleasing maps of tree canopy with highly accurate results. The data is stored as an 8-bit GEOTIFF file that is readable with GIS software packages such as ERSI ArcGIS, Qgis, etc. The class codes can be found in the classification scheme PDF. An overview map and legend PDF is provided as well.

This data set consists of eight data files. The raw data file, flight_data.csv, consists of sensor readings taken by the UAV during flight; these data include altitude, latitude and longitude, velocity, acceleration, and wind speed and direction. The ground_control_points_coordinates.csv file is a table describing the three-dimensional position of UAV ground control points. GIS files containing data involving the ground control points and the UAV flight path can be found in supplemental_GIS_files.zip; these files can be viewed with Google Earth. JPEG snapshots of the GIS file outputs are named ground_control_points_map.jpg and uav_groundtrack_map.jpg, respectively. The images.zip file contains photos logged by the UAV during flight, as well as a media folder containing pictures of the research team, the ground control points, and the UAV device. The UAV-logged photos are arranged by image type (RGB or NIR) and processing status (original or processed). An orthorectified example of the processed RGB photos can be found in the sample_orthorectified_view.jpg file. Climate data for the flight day and specification sheets for the UAV and imaging sensor can be found in data_sheets.zip. Imagery and sensor data from a commercial small Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle flown over an agriculture field on the morning of October 22, 2014 have been logged and documented. The field includes 16 surveyed ground control points laid out in a 4x4 square serving as known ground control points. This data set serves to study both challenges and opportunities of UAV-based remote sensing for precision agriculture applications. The raw sensor data can be used for navigation system design and analysis. The imagery and logged aircraft state can be used for image processing as well as remote sensing analysis. It is being shared to served as a documented data set for testing new concepts and ideas.
