Methods An open cohort of over 6 million adults was constructed from provincial physician billing and hospitalization records between 2000 and 2013. We defined incident SARD cases (SLE, Sjogren’s syndrome, scleroderma, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, polyarteritis nodosa and related conditions, polymyalgia rheumatic, other necrotizing vasculopathies, and undifferentiated connective tissue disease) based on at least two relevant billing diagnostic codes (within 2 years, with at least 1 billing from a rheumatologist), or at least one relevant hospitalization diagnostic code. Estimated PM2.5 and ozone concentrations (derived from remote sensing and/or chemical transport models) were assigned to subjects based on residential postal codes, updated throughout follow-up. Cox proportional hazards models with annual exposure levels were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) for SARDs incidence, adjusting for sex, age, urban-versus-rural residence, and socioeconomic status. Results The adjusted HR for SARDS related to one interquartile range increase in PM2.5 (3.97 µg/m3) was 1.12 (95% confidence interval 1.08–1.15), but there was no clear association with ozone. Indirectly controlling for smoking did not alter the findings. Conclusions We found associations between SARDs incidence and PM2.5, but no relationships with ozone. Additional studies are needed to better understand interplays between the many constituents of air pollution and rheumatic diseases.

Description of input MODIS AOD data The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometers aboard the Terra and Aqua earth-observing satellites provide daily measures of the aerosol optical depth of the atmosphere at a 3km spatial resolution everywhere in the world. Data is available in ���granules��� which describe five minutes of satellite time. These granules are available, more or less continuously, from February 24, 2000 for the Terra satellite and from July 4, 2002 for Aqua. During September of 2018, we downloaded all available granules for Terra and Aqua until August 31, 2018 and subsequently consolidated them into daily rasters describing global AOD. In August 2020, we processed additional Terra data. This archive therefore contains daily rasters for Aqua (from 2002-07-04 to 2018-08-31) and Terra (from 2000-02-24 to 2020-07-31). We note that February 2005 data are missing for the Aqua satellite. We use source products MOD04_3K (https://doi.org/10.5067/MODIS/MOD04_L2.006) and MYD04_3K (https://doi.org/10.5067/MODIS/MYD04_L2.006). The product files are stored in Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) and we use the "Optical Depth Land And Ocean" layer, which is stored as a Scientific Data Set (SDS) within the HDF file, as our measure of aerosol optical depth. The "Optical Depth Land And Ocean" dataset contains only the AOD retrievals of high quality. We convert all HDF formatted granules to GIS compatible formats using the HDF-EOS To GeoTIFF Conversion Tool (HEG) provided by NASA���s Earth Observing System Program. We consolidate GeoTIFF granules into a global raster for each day using ArcGIS. First, we keep only AOD values that do contain information. The missing value is -9999 in AOD retrievals. Second, we create a raster catalog with all the granules for a given day and calculate the average AOD value using the Raster Catalog to Raster Dataset tool. The code used to accomplish this is included for reference purposes in ���dofiles/old_work��� of the main replication archive at https://doi.org/10.3886/E126401V1. The pollen record suggests continuous long-term cooling, which parallels the decline in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. This cooling trend is overlaid by several rather quick transitions towards cooler conditions (ca. 5540/5350, 1550, and 390 cal BP) and one distinct decadal-scale cold event around 4130 cal BP. These shifts, on one hand, correspond with major hemispherical or global-scale climate transitions/events, including the 'Holocene Climate Transition', the onset of the 'Dark Ages Cold Period' main phase, the 'Little Ice Age', and the '4.2 kiloyear event', respectively. On the other hand, the shifts partly coincide with transformations in the Hokkaido prehistoric cultural sequence including the onset of the Middle Jomon (ca. 5000 cal BP), the Middle/Late Jomon transition (ca. 4000 cal BP), the immigration of Okhotsk culture groups (from ca. 1500 cal BP), and the establishment of the Classic Ainu culture (ca. 350 cal BP). AMS radiocarbon dating of charred macrobotanical remains from Hamanaka 2 suggests three discontinuous occupational periods ca. 390–50 BCE, 420–970 CE, and from 1640 CE, which correspond to the northern Hokkaido Epi Jomon (ca. 300–100 BCE), Okhotsk (ca. 500–1000 CE), and Classic Ainu (ca. 1600–1868 CE) cultural phases, respectively. While impact on the island's natural environments (forest clearance) was marginal during the Epi Jomon phase, it became significant during the Okhotsk and the Classic Ainu culture phases. This dataset contains 3 Supplemental files including (i) absolute counts of surface pollen samples collected across Rebun Island (Hokkaido, northern Japan), (ii) a photographic documentation of the most common fossil pollen and spore taxa recorded in the upper part (10.4 m, ca. 6000-270 cal BP) of the RK12 sediment core extracted from Lake Kushu (northern Rebun Island), and (iii) dimensional and weight measurements of charred barley grains recovered from cultural layers of the Hamanaka 2 archaeological site (northern Rebun Island). The pollen record suggests continuous long-term cooling, which parallels the decline in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. This cooling trend is overlaid by several rather quick transitions towards cooler conditions (ca. 5540/5350, 1550, and 390 cal BP) and one distinct decadal-scale cold event around 4130 cal BP. These shifts, on one hand, correspond with major hemispherical or global-scale climate transitions/events, including the 'Holocene Climate Transition', the onset of the 'Dark Ages Cold Period' main phase, the 'Little Ice Age', and the '4.2 kiloyear event', respectively. On the other hand, the shifts partly coincide with transformations in the Hokkaido prehistoric cultural sequence including the onset of the Middle Jomon (ca. 5000 cal BP), the Middle/Late Jomon transition (ca. 4000 cal BP), the immigration of Okhotsk culture groups (from ca. 1500 cal BP), and the establishment of the Classic Ainu culture (ca. 350 cal BP). AMS radiocarbon dating of charred macrobotanical remains from Hamanaka 2 suggests three discontinuous occupational periods ca. 390–50 BCE, 420–970 CE, and from 1640 CE, which correspond to the northern Hokkaido Epi Jomon (ca. 300–100 BCE), Okhotsk (ca. 500–1000 CE), and Classic Ainu (ca. 1600–1868 CE) cultural phases, respectively. While impact on the island's natural environments (forest clearance) was marginal during the Epi Jomon phase, it became significant during the Okhotsk and the Classic Ainu culture phases. This dataset contains 3 Supplemental files including (i) absolute counts of surface pollen samples collected across Rebun Island (Hokkaido, northern Japan), (ii) a photographic documentation of the most common fossil pollen and spore taxa recorded in the upper part (10.4 m, ca. 6000-270 cal BP) of the RK12 sediment core extracted from Lake Kushu (northern Rebun Island), and (iii) dimensional and weight measurements of charred barley grains recovered from cultural layers of the Hamanaka 2 archaeological site (northern Rebun Island).
