This collection contains a the datasets created as part of a masters thesis. The collection consists of two datasets in two forms as well as the corresponding entity descriptions for each of the datasets.The experiment_doc_labels_clean documents contain the data used for the experiments. The JSON file consists of a list of JSON objects. The JSON objects contain the following fields: id: Document idner_tags: List of IOB tags indicating mention boundaries based on the majority label assigned using crowdsourcing.el_tags: List of entity ids based on the majority label assigned using crowdsourcing.all_ner_tags: List of lists of IOB tags assigned by each of the users.all_el_tags: List of lists of entity IDs assigned by each of the users annotating the data.tokens: List of tokens from the text.The experiment_doc_labels_clean-U.tsv contains the dataset used for the experiments but in in a format similar to the CoNLL-U format. The first line for each document contains the document ID. The documents are separated by a blank line. Each word in a document is on its own line consisting of the word the IOB tag and the entity id separated by tags.While the experiments were being completed the annotation system was left open until all the documents had been annotated by three users. This resulted in the all_docs_complete_labels_clean.json and all_docs_complete_labels_clean-U.tsv datasets. The all_docs_complete_labels_clean.json and all_docs_complete_labels_clean-U.tsv documents take the same form as the experiment_doc_labels_clean.json and experiment_doc_labels_clean-U.tsv.Each of the documents described above contain an entity id. The IDs match to the entities stored in the entity_descriptions CSV files. Each of row in these files corresponds to a mention for an entity and take the form:{ID}${Mention}${Context}[N]Three sets of entity descriptions are available:1. entity_descriptions_experiments.csv: This file contains all the mentions from the subset of the data used for the experiments as described above. However, the data has not been cleaned so there are multiple entity IDs which actually refer to the same entity.2. entity_descriptions_experiments_clean.csv: These entities also cover the data used for the experiments, however, duplicate entities have been merged. These entities correspond to the labels for the documents in the experiment_doc_labels_clean files.3. entity_descriptions_all.csv: The entities in this file correspond to the data in the all_docs_complete_labels_clean. Please note that the entities have not been cleaned so there may be duplicate or incorrect entities.

A list of Place Names extracted from the ǂKhomani San | Hugh Brody Collection held by the University of Cape Town (UCT) Library.Effort has been made to geocode as many place names as possible with their geographic coordinates (Latitude & Longitude).The data set is available in three formats:• a comma separated values table (CSV); • a KMZ spatial data layer, compatible with Google Maps, Google Earth and most GIS packages; • a ZIP archive of an ESRI shapefile, compatible with most GIS packagesThis data set is incomplete. Not all resources in the collection have been processed, additional place names may be missing from the list. Geocoding was performed as accurately as our reference resources allowed, but some locations may have been misplaced.We would like to thank African Tongue and the communities of the region for their assistance with the creation of this data set.The ǂKhomani San are the first people of the southern Kalahari. They lived as hunters and gatherers in the immense desert in the northwest corner of South Africa. For them, it is a land rich in wildlife, plants, trees, great sand dunes and dry riverbeds. When the ǂKhomani San share their history, they tell a story of dispossession from their lands, erasure of their way of life, and disappearance of their language. To speak of their past is to search in memory for all that was taken from them in the colonial, apartheid and post-apartheid era. They also tell a story of reclamation and recovery of lands, language, and even of memory itself. This master metadata spreadsheet documents all of the Gede ruins heritage items published by the Zamani Project.The ruins of Gede (also Gedi), a traditional Arab-African Swahili town, are located just off Kenya’s coastline, some 90km north of Mombasa. Gede was a small town built entirely from stones and rocks, and most of the original foundations are still visible today.Remaining structures at the site include coral stone buildings, mosques, houses and a palace. The town was abandoned in the early 17th century, and Gede’s buildings date back to the 15th century, although it is believed that the site could have been inhabited as early as the 11th or 12th century.The Zamani Project spatially documented the Gede ruins in 2010. In addition to the three principal structures of the Great Mosque, the Small Mosque and the Palace, remains of other structures in the immediate vicinity were also documented.The Zamani Project seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of tangible cultural heritage in Africa and internationally by creating metrically accurate digital representations of historical sites. Digital spatial data of cultural heritage sites can be used for research and education, for restoration and conservation and as a record for future generations. The Kua ruins are all that remains of a medieval Swahili town located on Juani Island in the Mafia Archipelago. The ruins offer insights into an island civilization that saw Portuguese and Omani control as well as independence, enslavement, and eventual abandonment. Indicators of early settlement and trade—including Islamic and Chinese ceramics dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and currency from mainland Tanzania—have been found in the ruins, while Portuguese accounts from the sixteenth century note the great wealth of the Kua people. The Zamani Project spatially documented some of the Kua ruins in 2018.The Zamani Project seeks to increase awareness and knowledge of tangible cultural heritage in Africa and internationally by creating metrically accurate digital representations of historical sites. This is a GIS file set of the Gede ruins. The data was generated from laser scans, photogrammetric techniques and GPS data. The data maps the site of the Gede ruins in Kilifi County in Kenya. All data is in either the unprojected Geographic (GCS WGS84) or the projected Universal Transverse Mercator 37 South (UTM37S WGS84) coordinate system.The data is packaged as an ESRI Map Package (.mpk). If you are not an ESRI user and wish to unpack the package please rename the file extension to .zip and use a programme, such as 7-Zip, to unpack the package. The package contains shapefiles and images which are compatible with most GIS software. The aims of this collaborative research study between University of Cape Town and University of Sheffield study were to explore the contemporary play environments of children in order to identify the ways in which children’s play is shaped by technology, to examine the relationship between digital play, learning and creativity, and to explore the role of adults in mediating digital play. One of the five objectives was to understand the dynamics operating across the digital ecology of children’s play (in homes, communities and schools) in terms of synergies, dissonance and transfer, and to identify the implications for learning.The study adopted a mixed-methods approach. Parents of 3-11 year-olds were invited to complete a survey, and 30 parents then took part in telephone interviews in order to follow-up themes from the survey in greater detail. Case studies with families were undertaken. In the case studies, parents and children were interviewed and videoed. Parents also filmed their children using technologies, and they and their children were asked questions about the videos. Parents were invited to share images and videos with researchers using WhatsApp. In addition, children in the families were given diaries to record their use of social media and television, and used Go-Pro cameras to record their digital play. Further, children were invited to build a toy they would like to be invented using LEGO bricks. Children were invited to create concept maps on a number of questions relating to play, technology and learning. In addition, the children were observed in schools using technology, and were also observed in a regular after-school club or community venue they visited. In each case, the child’s class teacher and the community/ after school club leader were interviewed. Finally, children in schools took part in focus group interviews in which they were invited to create collages, complete concept maps and build a toy they would like to be invented using LEGO bricks.In this study, we started with 10 families (one family with twins) from 9 schools in the Cape Town area, that is, 11 case-study children (see Table 1), who were selected by the teachers and observed in school. After the school visits, one family (case-study child Fahiema) decided not to participate in the family visits part of the field work. The transcripts for each of the case-study children and the telephonic interviews of 30 parents on follow-up themes from the survey is shared. To protect identities of participants, pseudonyms are used.The following qualitative data is shared: interviews with their teachers; focus-group discussions; community visits; family visits and telephonic parent interviews.
