In the Eurasian Upper Paleolithic after about 35,000 years ago, abstract or depictional images provide evidence for cognitive abilities considered integral to modern human behavior. Here we report on two abstract representations engraved on pieces of red ochre recovered from the Middle Stone Age layers at Blombos Cave in South Africa. A mean date of 77,000 years was obtained for the layers containing the engraved ochres by thermoluminescence dating of burnt lithics, and the stratigraphic integrity was confirmed by an optically stimulated luminescence age of 70,000 years on an overlying dune. These engravings support the emergence of modern human behavior in Africa at least 35,000 years before the start of the Upper Paleolithic. International audience

Demetrias flourished from third until the first centuries BCE when its importance started to diminish. In the present study we examine the chemical composition of finished glass objects from the north cemetery of ancient Demetrias dated to the Hellenistic times looking at the specific chemical signature in order to better understand the various compositional groups of the period.

The Lateglacial (14,700-11,700 cal BP) is a key climate period marked by rapid but contrasted changes in the Northern Hemisphere. Indeed, regional climate differences have been evidenced during the Lateglacial in Europe and the Northern Mediterranean areas. However, past climate patterns are still debated since temperature and precipitation changes are poorly investigated towards the lower European latitudes. Lake Matese in Southern Italy is a key site in the Central Mediterranean to investigate climate patterns during the Lateglacial. This study aims to reconstruct climate changes and their impacts at Matese using a multi-proxy approach including magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry (XRF core scanning), pollen data and molecular biomarkers like branched Glycerol Dialkyl Glycerol Tetraethers (brGDGTs). Palaeotemperatures and -precipitation patterns are quantitatively inferred from pollen assemblages (multi-method approach: Modern Analogue Technique, Weighted Averaging Partial Least Squares regression, Random Forest, and Boosted Regression Trees) and brGDGTs calibrations. The results are compared to a latitudinal selection of regional climate reconstructions in Italy to better understand climate processes in Europe and in the circum-Mediterranean region. A warm Bølling–Allerød and a marked cold Younger Dryas are revealed in all climate reconstructions inferred from various proxies (chironomids, ostracods, speleothems, pollen, brGDGTs), showing no latitudinal differences in terms of temperatures across Italy. During the Bølling–Allerød, no significant changes in terms of precipitation are recorded, however, a contrasted pattern is visible during the Younger Dryas. Slightly wetter conditions are recorded south of latitude 42°N whereas dry conditions are recorded north of latitude 42°N. During the Younger Dryas, cold conditions can be attributed to the southward position of North Atlantic sea-ice and of the Polar Frontal JetStream whereas the increase of precipitation is Southern Italy seems to be linked to relocation of Atlantic storm tracks into the Mediterranean, induced by the Fennoscandian ice sheet and the North European Plain. By contrast, during the Bølling–Allerød warm conditions can be linked to the northward position of North Atlantic sea-ice and of the Polar Frontal JetStream. International audience

IN the obituary notice of Prof. Robert Koch in NATURE of June 2 (p. 404), it is stated that “Koch suggested that the crocodile might be the reservoir host of the trypanosome that gives rise... to sleeping sickness”. This is a statement that has been made very often, especially in the daily Press, but which I, for my part, have never been able to verify, although I have some acquaintance with Koch's writings on the subject of sleeping sickness. Since this idea has been attributed so often to Koch, it is doubtless safe to assume that there is some foundation for doing so, and I should be very glad to learn when and where Koch made the suggestion that the crocodile is a reservoir host for sleeping sickness. The point is merely one of historical and bibliographical interest, since in his latest writings Koch expressly repudiated the idea of any such connection between crocodiles and sleeping sickness (see NATURE, February 18, 1909, p. 458, and May 5, 1910, p. 279; also the Bulletin of the Sleeping Sickness Bureau, No. 11, November 5, 1909, p. 421, footnote).

In particular, the article will focus on how perceptions of musicians’ national and post-migrant identities vary according to their location on either side of the Channel but also according to how the musicians themselves choose to present their music, depending on whether they are based in France or Britain. In addition to the individual strategies adopted by musicians, the article also considers how the shifting socio-political contexts in post-9/11 France and Britain have affected the choices and opportunities available to artists of North African origin in both national contexts.

The International System of Units (SI) is to be redefined with implementation set to be on World Metrology Day (20th May 2019). Under the auspices of the Consultative Committee of Thermometry (CCT) the world thermometry community has been working together to ensure a smooth and effective redefinition of the kelvin. A large part of that activity has been coordinated through the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research: "Implementing the new kelvin" projects. This paper describes the InK2 project contribution.
