    Actors are often praised and lauded for their ability to seamlessly transform into characters that are very different from themselves. It is why method acting is so appealing to many of us actors and why the Oscar awards are usually given to those who disappear behind their character. But does divulging deeply into a character have psychological effects on actors? If so, what are those effects? In applying to graduate school, I wanted to attend a program that could help me learn a process of transformation and full character embodiment. I was able to fully explore this process in my performance of Fick in Balm in Gilead. In preparation to play a heroine addict, I watched numerous documentaries, explored physical movement transformation through Anterior Head Carriage (a condition where the head is improperly aligned with the neck and shoulders), and I read psychological studies on the thought processes of addicts. By the final performance, I was totally immersed in a character so unlike myself that I began to think, move, and engage with the world around me, as Fick would, outside of performances and rehearsals. I found my confidence deteriorating and it became difficult to sleep and think clearly. A Royal Society Open Science study states that “changes in embodiment can lead to neural changes in networks associated with perspective taking and role change”. Essentially an actor’s brain changes fundamentally with different roles. And with Fick’s negative thought patterns, I began to become depressed. And all of these symptoms I experienced of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and life stress are indicative of what the Journal of Alzheimers Disease calls RNT. It is habit of negative thinking over a prolonged period of time that can have harmful effects on the brain’s capacity to think, reason, and form memories. I was completely overcome both mentally and physically. What I have found is that, much like the placebo effect, an actor’s imagination of character and embodiment does cause some neurological effects on the actor. It took me a long time to readjust myself and find my center again even months after the performances were over. I believe that is why some actors, i.e. Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman, process this decentering through drug use and oftentimes overdose. What I hope for is a more indepth teaching of closing processes for actors and more therapy integrated into acting curriculums so that the cost of transformation is not one that demands sacrifice of our well-being that affects the performer beyond the performance.

    TextDescriptives is a Python package for calculating a large variety of statistics from text. It is built on top of spaCy and can be easily integrated into existing workflows. The package has already been used for analysing the linguistic stability of clinical texts, creating features for predicting neuropsychiatric conditions, and analysing linguistic goals of primary school students. This paper describes the package and its features.

    This collection of photographs was compiled as part of the MaltaPot project at the University of Malta. This project aims to enhance the understanding of pottery technology and provenancein Neolithic Malta, mainly dating to the Għar Dalam, Skorba (Early Neolithic), and Zebbuġ (Late Neolithic) phases. This collection presents sherds from the Għar Dalam phase, photographs, and microphotographs and lists their archaeological contexts and form. This collection was prepared thanks to the information from the National Museum of Archaeology (NMA), Malta, and the FRAGSUS project. The project used multiple techniques to characterise the pottery sherds, such as microscopy, polarised light microscope, X-Ray Fluorescence or X-Ray Diffraction. This collection presents the sherds which were not analysed using these destructive techniques, although they had a section ground flat for microphotography. Data collection was carried out between 2018-2020 by Dr Brogan. The document was compiled by 2023 Ms Richard-Trémeau. Photographs can be used if credited. This upload contains a PDF document and two zip files with the macroscopic photograph (Exterior surface) and the microphotographs.

    Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.The Participation Survey is a continuous push-to-web survey of adults aged 16 and over in England. It serves as a successor to the Taking Part survey, which ran for 16 years as a continuous face to face survey. Paper surveys are available for those not digitally engaged. Fieldwork started in October 2021 and it is envisaged that the survey will be a key evidence source for Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and its sectors by providing statistically representative national estimates of adult engagement with the DCMS sectors. The survey’s main objectives are to: Provide a central, reliable evidence source that can be used to analyse cultural, digital, and sporting engagement, providing a clear picture of why people do or do not engage. Provide data at a county level to meet user needs, including providing evidence for the levelling up agenda. Underpin further research on driving engagement and the value and benefits of engagement.Further information on the survey can be found on the gov.uk Participation Survey webpage. Three versions of the Participation Survey 2022-2023 are available:An open access version (SN 9126). This version is freely available to download and does not require UK Data Service registration. This safeguarded dataset (SN 9125), which includes some additional detail. It is only available to registered UKDS users who have agreed to abide by the conditions of the End User Licence. A Secure Access version containing all years (SN 9014), which contains further detailed information. Access to this version is very restricted and requires UKDS registration, completion of an extensive application form, approval from the depositor, and successful completion of a Safe Researcher Training course before access can be granted. Ancient Greek painted pots, due to their descriptive imagery, constitute a tremendous source of information about all sorts of matters regarding the functioning and mentality of Greek society. With a review of the depictions and details making reference to sports and other athletic activities on pots from the Geometric period to the Classical one, I intend to provide an overview of the Greek perspective and view towards athletic activity throughout these periods and the role played by athletic activities and how they relate to the present.

    This dissertation focuses on the formation of multiethnic Pan-Asianism in modern art in Manchuria under the Japanese occupation in the first half of the twentieth century. Responding to the rapidly changing political conditions from the era of the informal empire (1906–⁠1932) to the Manchukuo period (1932–1945), artists of settler and local communities sought to transform artistic practice by bringing their colonial and native identities into the state-endorsed visual productions. Rather than viewing the art of Manchukuo as a dark valley of wartime stagnation or as a confrontation/assimilation between the colonized and the colonizer, my approach is to recover the historical moment when the notion of transnational modernity in art was shaped, contested, and reappropriated not only by state actors but by unstable, multi-dimensional social relations. I pay special attention to the state art exhibitions in Manchukuo as the last piece of Japan’s intra-imperial salon network involving colonial Korea and Taiwan, which exposed and reproduced the subjugation and dynamics of intersectional identities: race, ethnicity, genealogy, gender, and class. Case studies throughout four chapters demonstrate how the field of power in the art scene shifted from “cosmopolitan” Dalian to “ultra-modern” Changchun after the birth of Manchukuo in 1932, and how artists selectively claimed their Asiatic traditional and modern identities amid the political shift. The first chapter examines the development of metropolitan art productions in Dalian shaped by settler communities under powerful railway imperialism and local government by appropriating visual spectacles of Chinese labor and ethnic culture. The second chapter explores the deployment of the state art exhibition in Changchun and the anti-state exhibition in Fengtian, which revealed multifaceted interactions between Japanese and Chinese. The third chapter provides a case study of settler artist Kai Mihachirō (1903–1979) and his research on Manchurian folklore and folk arts in demonstrating how Manchukuo’s local characters were appropriated by Japanese settlers and the state in classifying, collecting, and curating races. In the fourth chapter, I address Manchukuo’s machine aesthetics, featured in the state art exhibitions, as an embodiment of Pan-Asian modernity and Japanese imperialism engendered by advanced technology and science, which became mobilized as wartime rhetoric.

Here we present a case study, a sample of 3D models from a large collection of well-preserved medieval ceramics from the excavations of the Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea, Greece. This growing digital collection can illustrate the advantages, potential, and challenges presented by the incorporation of 3D technology into archaeological practice. 3D modeling technology can facilitate documentation, interpretation, and publication of archaeological datasets. However, the longevity of these datasets remains uncertain and require extensive dialogue and collaboration, as storage space requirements, support of current digital infrastructure, and long-term data accessibility and preservation are matters that do not have standardized solutions. More effort needs to be invested in preserving these large datasets before 3D modeling can become fully incorporated into archaeological practice.

    Actors are often praised and lauded for their ability to seamlessly transform into characters that are very different from themselves. It is why method acting is so appealing to many of us actors and why the Oscar awards are usually given to those who disappear behind their character. But does divulging deeply into a character have psychological effects on actors? If so, what are those effects? In applying to graduate school, I wanted to attend a program that could help me learn a process of transformation and full character embodiment. I was able to fully explore this process in my performance of Fick in Balm in Gilead. In preparation to play a heroine addict, I watched numerous documentaries, explored physical movement transformation through Anterior Head Carriage (a condition where the head is improperly aligned with the neck and shoulders), and I read psychological studies on the thought processes of addicts. By the final performance, I was totally immersed in a character so unlike myself that I began to think, move, and engage with the world around me, as Fick would, outside of performances and rehearsals. I found my confidence deteriorating and it became difficult to sleep and think clearly. A Royal Society Open Science study states that “changes in embodiment can lead to neural changes in networks associated with perspective taking and role change”. Essentially an actor’s brain changes fundamentally with different roles. And with Fick’s negative thought patterns, I began to become depressed. And all of these symptoms I experienced of depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and life stress are indicative of what the Journal of Alzheimers Disease calls RNT. It is habit of negative thinking over a prolonged period of time that can have harmful effects on the brain’s capacity to think, reason, and form memories. I was completely overcome both mentally and physically. What I have found is that, much like the placebo effect, an actor’s imagination of character and embodiment does cause some neurological effects on the actor. It took me a long time to readjust myself and find my center again even months after the performances were over. I believe that is why some actors, i.e. Heath Ledger and Philip Seymour Hoffman, process this decentering through drug use and oftentimes overdose. What I hope for is a more indepth teaching of closing processes for actors and more therapy integrated into acting curriculums so that the cost of transformation is not one that demands sacrifice of our well-being that affects the performer beyond the performance.

The package has already been used for analysing the linguistic stability of clinical texts, creating features for predicting neuropsychiatric conditions, and analysing linguistic goals of primary school students. This paper describes the package and its features.

    This collection of photographs was compiled as part of the MaltaPot project at the University of Malta. This project aims to enhance the understanding of pottery technology and provenancein Neolithic Malta, mainly dating to the Għar Dalam, Skorba (Early Neolithic), and Zebbuġ (Late Neolithic) phases. This collection presents sherds from the Għar Dalam phase, photographs, and microphotographs and lists their archaeological contexts and form. This collection was prepared thanks to the information from the National Museum of Archaeology (NMA), Malta, and the FRAGSUS project. The project used multiple techniques to characterise the pottery sherds, such as microscopy, polarised light microscope, X-Ray Fluorescence or X-Ray Diffraction. This collection presents the sherds which were not analysed using these destructive techniques, although they had a section ground flat for microphotography. Data collection was carried out between 2018-2020 by Dr Brogan. The document was compiled by 2023 Ms Richard-Trémeau. Photographs can be used if credited. This upload contains a PDF document and two zip files with the macroscopic photograph (Exterior surface) and the microphotographs.

It serves as a successor to the Taking Part survey, which ran for 16 years as a continuous face to face survey. Paper surveys are available for those not digitally engaged. Fieldwork started in October 2021 and it is envisaged that the survey will be a key evidence source for Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and its sectors by providing statistically representative national estimates of adult engagement with the DCMS sectors. The survey’s main objectives are to: Provide a central, reliable evidence source that can be used to analyse cultural, digital, and sporting engagement, providing a clear picture of why people do or do not engage. Provide data at a county level to meet user needs, including providing evidence for the levelling up agenda. Underpin further research on driving engagement and the value and benefits of engagement.Further information on the survey can be found on the gov.uk Participation Survey webpage. Three versions of the Participation Survey 2022-2023 are available:An open access version (SN 9126). This version is freely available to download and does not require UK Data Service registration. This safeguarded dataset (SN 9125), which includes some additional detail. It is only available to registered UKDS users who have agreed to abide by the conditions of the End User Licence. A Secure Access version containing all years (SN 9014), which contains further detailed information. Access to this version is very restricted and requires UKDS registration, completion of an extensive application form, approval from the depositor, and successful completion of a Safe Researcher Training course before access can be granted. Ancient Greek painted pots, due to their descriptive imagery, constitute a tremendous source of information about all sorts of matters regarding the functioning and mentality of Greek society. With a review of the depictions and details making reference to sports and other athletic activities on pots from the Geometric period to the Classical one, I intend to provide an overview of the Greek perspective and view towards athletic activity throughout these periods and the role played by athletic activities and how they relate to the present.

    This dissertation focuses on the formation of multiethnic Pan-Asianism in modern art in Manchuria under the Japanese occupation in the first half of the twentieth century. Responding to the rapidly changing political conditions from the era of the informal empire (1906–⁠1932) to the Manchukuo period (1932–1945), artists of settler and local communities sought to transform artistic practice by bringing their colonial and native identities into the state-endorsed visual productions. Rather than viewing the art of Manchukuo as a dark valley of wartime stagnation or as a confrontation/assimilation between the colonized and the colonizer, my approach is to recover the historical moment when the notion of transnational modernity in art was shaped, contested, and reappropriated not only by state actors but by unstable, multi-dimensional social relations. I pay special attention to the state art exhibitions in Manchukuo as the last piece of Japan’s intra-imperial salon network involving colonial Korea and Taiwan, which exposed and reproduced the subjugation and dynamics of intersectional identities: race, ethnicity, genealogy, gender, and class. Case studies throughout four chapters demonstrate how the field of power in the art scene shifted from “cosmopolitan” Dalian to “ultra-modern” Changchun after the birth of Manchukuo in 1932, and how artists selectively claimed their Asiatic traditional and modern identities amid the political shift. The first chapter examines the development of metropolitan art productions in Dalian shaped by settler communities under powerful railway imperialism and local government by appropriating visual spectacles of Chinese labor and ethnic culture. The second chapter explores the deployment of the state art exhibition in Changchun and the anti-state exhibition in Fengtian, which revealed multifaceted interactions between Japanese and Chinese. The third chapter provides a case study of settler artist Kai Mihachirō (1903–1979) and his research on Manchurian folklore and folk arts in demonstrating how Manchukuo’s local characters were appropriated by Japanese settlers and the state in classifying, collecting, and curating races. In the fourth chapter, I address Manchukuo’s machine aesthetics, featured in the state art exhibitions, as an embodiment of Pan-Asian modernity and Japanese imperialism engendered by advanced technology and science, which became mobilized as wartime rhetoric.

    This paper explores the link between archaeology and the digital humanities, especially the adoption of 3D modeling technology, which is becoming an integral part of archaeological practice. Here we present a case study, a sample of 3D models from a large collection of well-preserved medieval ceramics from the excavations of the Sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea, Greece. This growing digital collection can illustrate the advantages, potential, and challenges presented by the incorporation of 3D technology into archaeological practice. 3D modeling technology can facilitate documentation, interpretation, and publication of archaeological datasets. However, the longevity of these datasets remains uncertain and require extensive dialogue and collaboration, as storage space requirements, support of current digital infrastructure, and long-term data accessibility and preservation are matters that do not have standardized solutions. More effort needs to be invested in preserving these large datasets before 3D modeling can become fully incorporated into archaeological practice.
