    The iconographic, formal and technical analysis of the decoration elements of El Castillo and La Pasiega (Cantabria) highlights a heterogeneous distribution of the main themes, with distribution logics that are very different in each of the caves. In El Castillo, the main themes appear in distinct sectors, each one containing a central area with a high density of motifs and an end that sets its limit. Consequently, the decoration appears as a mosaic formed of small sets of motifs. In contrast, using the same analysis criteria for the cave of La Pasiega shows that, besides motifs of the same type spread in the network space, there are more structured decorated sets. The set of Gallery A shows an increasing number of motifs from the beginning to the end of the sector, with a maximum density at the level of the back areas. In turn, the set of Gallery B comprises animal figures that stood out all the more to the viewers that they were illuminated by natural light. Whereas the decoration of Gallery A is organised in the manner of deep sanctuaries, the ornamentation of the Salle du Mégacéros of Gallery B falls rather in the logic of open-air sanctuaries. info:eu-repo/semantics/published SCOPUS: ar.j

    This paper presents an analysis of glazes of vessels unearthed in archaeological excavation in the Vega of Granada (south-east Spain) and that can be dated between the 9th and the 12th centuries AD. The material analysed includes the first glazed ceramics produced in Al-Andalus after the Islamic occupation of the Peninsula. From a very early period (mid to late-9th century) there is a coexistence of lead-alkaline monochrome (green and honey) glazed vessels, and of polychrome decorated (green, white and brown) tin-glazed, wares early examples of the so called green and manganese wares. From the 10th century onwards honey lead-alkaline glazed vessels often with manganese-painted decorations are found. The chemical composition of the ceramic pastes, glazes and decorations as well as of the microcrystallites present in the glazes is obtained from polished cross sections of the glazes by SEM-EDS, OM and EPM. Information about the materials and methods of production is discussed and compared to contemporary productions from other areas in Al Andalus and also to later productions.

    Authors: Pioffet, Hélène; Ard, Vincent;

    The British Neolithic transition, occurring around 4000 BC, at least one millennium after the continental part of Northwest Europe, is still subject to important debate these days. Various studies suggest that the Neolithic start involved farming immigrants from various parts of the Continent. However, ceramics of the Early Neolithic of Britain became increasingly distinct from their Continental roots, particularly in the Southwest and Southeast of England. We recently completed two important projects, one on Early Neolithic British and Irish pottery and the other on Peterborough Ware, integrating a new way of considering these early productions through a technological approach and the observation of various steps of the chaîne opératoire. This paper is the opportunity to present preliminary results which shed a new light on the evolution of pottery wares during the fourth millennium BC in Southern Britain. It specifically highlights strong connections between Early Neolithic and Middle Neolithic pottery, in terms of style, but above in terms of manufacturing techniques.

    Authors: Dumons, Bruno;

    En choisissant de mettre à l’honneur des citoyens modèles, notamment grâce à la technique des décorations, la Troisième République a recours à une pédagogie par l’exemple pour installer durablement une culture méritocratique dans la société française. Pour cela, elle invente de nouvelles médailles tout en s’appropriant celles qui avaient été créées sous les régimes précédents comme la plus prestigieuse d’entre elles : la Légion d’Honneur (1802). Si l’historiographie des usages symboliques de la République a été rendue solide avec les travaux de Maurice Agulhon sur la Provence, moins connues sont ces « élites de l’honneur » dont les archives publiques ont conservé les traces. En explorant le célèbre « Var rouge », il nous a été permis de cerner le profil de ces élites méditerranéennes que l’État républicain a souhaité honorer entre 1870 et 1940. Parmi celles-ci, se distingue la catégorie des maires, en particulier ces « bons maires » qui œuvrent pour la « républicanisation » de la société. Ce sont quelques-unes de ces personnalités qui seront présentées dans ce chapitre. In designating model citizens through processes like decorations, the French Third Republic set examples to establish a culture of meritocracy in French society. It invented new medals and appropriated existing ones created by former regimes, including the most prestigious of all: the Légion d’Honneur (1802).Although the historiography of the Republic’s symbolic practices has been augmented by Maurice Agulhon’s works on Provence, this “elite of honour” whose trace remained in public archives is not well known. We explored the “Var rouge” (the predominantly left-wing Var département) to study the profiles of this Mediterranean elite which was honoured by the Republican state between 1870 and 1940. These include the category of mayors, in particular the “bons maires” who contributed to the “republicanisation” of society. This chapter presents a few of these personalities.

    International audience; The aim of this study was to examine and document the wall paintings in theChâteau de Germolles. Situated in Burgundy, France, Germolles is the best preservedresidence of the Dukes of Burgundy and was listed as a monument ofnational importance in 1989.The medieval wall decoration of the Château de Germolles was rediscoveredunder the nineteenth-century plasters during World War II. Medieval accounts ofthe château provide a detailed list of the materials acquired to make the muraldecoration, but this list is incongruous when compared with the current appearanceof the paintings. The discrepancy between the archival and material evidence,and also the need to understand the complexity of the painting technique usedwere the main motivations for undertaking the case study described in this chapter.Imaging alongside more traditional examination techniques were utilized torecord and document the mural decoration. The objectives of the case study wereto distinguish the original materials from those applied during restoration, identifythose materials, and correlate them with the archives. We also tried to understandthe medieval painting techniques used and assess the condition of the paintingsand stabilization requirements. Finally we aimed to find a sustainable solution forthe management of the various types of data collected. Various techniques andinvestigations offered valuable insights into the materials and the painting techniqueused. To improve visitor experience, based on the information gained in thecourse of this study, a 3D virtual representation of the original decoration is currentlyproposed for display to the public visiting the Château de Germolles.

    Authors: Sacha Kacki; Erik Trinkaus; Eline M.J. Schotsmans; Patrice Courtaud; +6 Authors

    International audience; The Mid-Upper Paleolithic (Gravettian) karstic Grotte de Cussac (France) contains two areas of human remains in the context of abundant (and spectacular) parietal engravings. The first area (loci 1 and 2) includes the skeleton of a young adult male in a bear nest, rearranged by postdecomposition inundation, and the variably fragmentary remains of at least two individuals distributed across two bear nests, sorted anatomically and with most of the elements constrained to one side of one nest. The second area (locus 3) retains remains of two adults and an adolescent, in upper hollows and variably distributed down the slope, largely segregated into upper versus lower body groups. The only decoration associated with the human remains is red pigment on some of the bones or underlying sediment. The human remains indicate variable nonnatural deposition and manipulation of human bodies, body portions, and skeletal elements of at least six individuals. Moreover, Cussac is unusual in the association of these remains with exceptional parietal art. The complex Cussac mortuary pattern joins growing evidence from other Gravettian sites of variable treatment of individuals after death, within and across sites, in terms of formal deposition of the body versus postmortem manipulation versus surface abandonment. It provides a window onto the social diversity and the complex interactions of the living and the dead among these successful Late Pleistocene foragers.

    Authors: Castelluccio, Stéphane;

    La richesse des gisements archéologiques du site du château de Marly est tout aussi intéressante que frustrante. Les nombreux fragments exhumés confirment les textes d’archives et les descriptions quant aux techniques employées pour la construction des pavillons et pour leur décor intérieur. En revanche, à quelques rares exceptions, l’identification des éléments d'architecture et leur localisation dans les intérieurs demeurent souvent difficiles en raison de leur petitesse et de leur manque de caractéristique. La destruction systématique des bâtiments pendant le Premier Empire explique sans doute ces menus morceaux. The wealth of the archaeological deposits of the Château de Marly site is as interesting as it is frustrating. The many exhumed fragments confirm the archival texts and the descriptions of the techniques used for the construction of the pavilions and for their interior decoration. On the other hand, and with few exceptions, the identification of architectural elements and their location inside often remain difficult because of their small size and their lack of defining characteristics. The systematic destruction of the buildings during the First Empire undoubtedly explains these small pieces.

    International audience; The opening of the Deux-Ouvertures cave is on the left bank of the Ardèche River, just before the canyon exit on the land of the village of Saint-Martin d’Ardèche in the Southwest of France. Although it has been known since 1896, the deep part of one of the galleries was not discovered until 1985. The surface of this gallery was covered by animal bones, 90% of which belonged to Ursus spelaeus. In 2007, two osseous human fragments were discovered: the distal part of an adult humerus and the diaphysis of a radius belonging to a young individual. These two specimens are the topic of the present paper. Although the date of the humerus (34,440–33,730 cal BP) corresponds to the period when bears frequented the caves, the dates of the diaphysis of the radius (4410–4570 cal BP), found at the heart of the “decorated Paleolithic sector”, lead us to assume that it was transported there, perhaps deliberately. The study of the two human bones originating in the Deux-Ouvertures cave illustrates that the diaphysis of the radius, belonging to a young individual of the Neolithic period, does not exhibit any differences in comparison to modern radii. By contrast, the distal part of the adult humerus, although it is incomplete and altered, is the first example that has been dated in the Ardèche of adult human remains associated with a decorated Paleolithic cave. This specimen, aside perhaps from the width of its median column, is rather slender and does not present any significant difference in relation to other upper Paleolithic humeri.; La grotte des Deux-Ouvertures s’ouvre en rive gauche peu avant la sortie des gorges de l’Ardèche, sur le territoire de la commune de Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. Bien que connue depuis 1896, ce n’est qu’en 1985 qu’était découverte la partie profonde du réseau : une galerie qui présentait des ossements éparpillés sur le sol, dont plus de 90 % appartiennent à Ursus spelaeus. En 2007, deux fragments osseux humains – une partie distale d’un humérus adulte et une diaphyse de radius appartenant à un jeune sujet – ont été également mis au jour. Ils font l’objet de cet article. La datation de l’humérus (34 440–33 730 cal BP) s’inscrit au sein de la phase de fréquentation par les ours des cavernes, alors que la datation de la diaphyse du radius (4410–4570 cal BP) en plein cœur du « secteur orné paléolithique » laisse supposer qu’il a été déposé, peut-être, de façon délibérée. L’étude des deux os humains provenant de la grotte des Deux-Ouvertures montre que la diaphyse radiale, appartenant à un sujet jeune, d’âge Néolithique, ne présente pas de différence en regard de radius modernes. En revanche, la partie distale de l’humérus d’un sujet adulte, bien qu’incomplète et altérée, est le premier reste humain d’adulte, associé à une grotte ornée paléolithique en Ardèche, à avoir été daté. Ce dernier, exception faite peut-être pour la largeur du pilier médian, est plutôt gracile et ne présente pas de différence significative avec les autres restes du Paléolithique supérieur.

    International audience; Recently, several sites dating from the Early Neolithic were discovered in the extreme North of France, in a region where this period had been unknown up until now. The ten sites presented here all date from the Blicquy/Villeneuve-Saint-Germain (BVSG) chrono-cultural horizon, in a geographic sector located between the Oise valley to the east, the Somme valley to the south and the shores of the Channel/North Sea to the northwest. These sites are rather late for an Early Neolithic, compared to the more imposing Linear Pottery Culture settlements in Belgian Hainaut or the Paris basin, which are several centuries older. The synopsis of these studies defines the typo-chronological framework of these settlements, in parallel with the radiocarbon results and a techno-functional approach to the different objects. Comparisons with Early Neolithic sites from the Paris basin and Belgium contribute to the discussion on the links between the different regions and the broader question of regional axes of Linear Pottery Culture and BVSG.; La découverte récente de plusieurs gisements datés du Néolithique ancien dans l’extrême Nord de la France s’est faite dans une région où cette période n’était pas attestée. Les dix sites présentés ici, sont tous datés de l’horizon chrono-culturel Blicquy/Villeneuve-Saint-Germain (BVSG) et sont implantés dans un secteur géographique compris entre les vallées de l’Oise à l’est, de la Somme au sud et des rivages de la Manche/Mer du Nord au nord-ouest. Cet effectif faible est aussi tardif pour un premier néolithique comparé aux occupations rubanées reconnues, dans le Hainaut belge ou le Bassin parisien, plus importantes mais aussi plus anciennes de quelques siècles. La synthèse des études a permis de préciser le cadre typo-chronologique de ces occupations à l’aide d’approches techno-fonctionnelles sur les différents mobiliers en les mettant en parallèle avec les mesures radiocarbone. Les comparaisons avec les sites du Néolithique ancien du Bassin parisien et de Belgique viendront alimenter la discussion sur les liens entretenus entre les différentes régions et permettront finalement de revenir sur les apports de ces sites dans l'étude plus générale des axes régionaux de colonisation néolithique rubanés et BVSG.

    The Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave (Ardèche, France), famous for its remarkable rock art, also contains unique thermal-alterations such as rock spalling and color changes on the walls. These alterations resulted from intense fires that have not been observed in the other decorated caves thus far discovered. The functions of these unusual fires challenge archaeologists. To characterize these combustions, we used a numerical tool, previously validated with experimental data, to study the thermo-alterations in the Megaceros Gallery. This unprecedented approach in cave art research enabled us to assess the wood quantities and locations of the hearths responsible for the thermo-alterations. We report here that at least ten fires took place in the Megaceros Gallery while burning more than 170 kg of wood. Both simulation and in situ observations suggest that the branches were arranged in a tepee shape and purposefully positioned, some distance from the walls. This method therefore enables further analysis of the functions of these fires.

    Authors: Pioffet, Hélène; Ard, Vincent;

    Authors: Dumons, Bruno;

    Authors: Castelluccio, Stéphane;
