    Abstract Sunken lanes are roads or tracks, 2 m or more wide, that are incised at least 0.5 m, but often by several meters, below the general level of the surrounding land surface. They are formed by the passage of people, animals, vehicles and erosion by water and gravity. Although these anthropogenic landforms are quite common worldwide they received limited interest by the international scientific community. This comprehensive review analyzed all available information on their characteristics, development and functions in landscapes. Most research on sunken lanes has been conducted in Europe, whereas sunken lanes have been occasionally reported in other continents as well. Major topics addressed are spatial distribution, origin and development, morphology, erosion rates, hydrology, ecology, management, geotourism and research needs. Mean dimensions of sunken lanes reported for various regions vary widely: i.e. 30–2300 m for their length; 0.6–12.5 m for their depth and 2–36 m for their top width. Typical sunken lane densities in European regions (10 to 100 km2 large) characterized by such landforms range between 0.2 and 0.5 km km−2 but for smaller areas ( Sunken lane formation results from interactions between natural factors (i.e. lithology and soils, topography, climate, vegetation) and anthropogenic factors (i.e. traffic, land use and management). Rock type, weathering status and soil types control the erodibility of hillslope materials and hence the development and preservation of sunken lanes. Sunken lanes have been reported in several lithologies but most have been studied in loess regions. Sunken lanes, can be initiated at topographic landscape positions with a much lower slope gradient and corresponding contributing area than those needed to initiate classical gullies, due to the combined action of natural (i.e. concentrated flow erosion and mass movements) and anthropogenic processes (i.e. erosion by animal and human trampling, wheel traffic and digging). Once formed, medium to long-term average incision rates of unpaved bare sunken lanes are 1 to 5 cm year−1 often exceeding erosion rates on nearby cropland by at least one order of magnitude. Sunken lanes perform many functions in landscapes i.e. microclimatological, hydrological, geomorphological, ecological, transport, aesthetic, geotouristic, educational, scientific, strategic, and historical functions. Sunken lanes represent long-standing heritage of past agricultural landscapes and, taking into account their natural and cultural assets, justifies their protection. Unfortunately in several regions, sunken lanes are threatened by urban sprawl, agricultural intensification or land consolidation programs. It remains a challenge for environmental planners to conserve this characteristic geomorphosite for the Anthropocene and to reconcile its competing functions.

    A mastodon tooth has been found at Husnicioara coal open pit, in Mehedinţi district (southwestern Romania). It originates from the Lower Pliocene (Dacian) gravel and sand deposits lying just above the coal bed IV, mined in this quarry. The tooth exposing zygodont features undoubtedly belongs to Mammut borsoni (“Borson’s mastodont”). Although this species is very common in the Pliocene vertebrate faunas from this part of Europe, until now it was missing from the Lower Pliocene (Dacian) assemblage’s lists in our country.

    Superconducting polycrystalline samples (Bi6Pb0.4)(Sr1.8Ba0.2)(Ca1_xSmx)2Cu3Oy with 0^le; x ≤ 0.05 were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction measurements showed the influence of Sm concentration on the phase purity of samples. The influence of partial substitution of Ca by Sm on the normal state properties and the flux dynamics were investigated by electrical resistance versus temperature and systematic a.c. susceptibility measurements function of temperature and Hac field amplitude. The evolution of some parameters sensitive to Sm concentration were evaluated from resistivity data and a.c. susceptibility data.     International audience; In mid-latitude Eurasia, loess-paleosol sequences (LPS) provide the most widespread sedimentary records of Quaternary paleoenvironmental evolution. In the Middle Danube Basin (MDB), these archives cover at least the last million years of climate history, and occasionally contain archeological findings. The studied Zemun LPS is located on the right bank of the Danube in Northern Serbia. The site was declared as a protected site, based on Paleolithic artifacts found on the riverbank and stemming from unknown stratigraphic levels of the loess cliffs exposed along the Danube. The present study aims to provide a stratigraphic, paleoenvironmental, and temporal context for the Zemun LPS by means of environmental magnetic and colorimetric methods. Our investigations result in a chronostratigraphic scheme allowing direct comparison with other well-established reference records in the MDB and elsewhere. Two potential tephra layers tentatively assigned to the so-called L2 and Bag tephras, which are both widespread in the MDB and beyond were investigated for their bulk magnetic properties. The resulting integrated age model suggests that the Zemun LPS records a detailed history of a quasi-continuous accumulation of mineral dust from Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 11–5a (c. 430–60 ka). The outcome of our integrative approach indicates a continuous aridification over the last four interglacial/glacial cycles and we discuss potential changes in seasonality over time.

    The purpose of this study is to identify and characterise some of the raw materials in NW Romania which have been suggested as having been used for knapping tools. The basic characteristics of the materials, obtained by macroscopic, microscopic, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) investigations provide a reference database useful in provenance studies on individual artefacts or whole assemblages. An assessment of each material is made regarding its quality as a knappable material.

    The paper documents a conodont fauna from Lower Triassic deposits of Paleotethys-issued North Dobrogea Orogen. The studied strata exposed in the Tulcea Veche Quarry are characterized by the presence of diversified molluscs, including the ammonoid Tirolites cassianus (Quenstedt) and the bivalve Crittendenia decidens (Bittner). The site also represents the type locality of the coelacanth fish Dobrogeria aegyssensis Cavin & Grădinaru. The recovered conodont fauna is marked by Icriospathodus crassatus (Orchard), Neospathodus robustispinus Zhao & Orchard, Novispathodus abruptus (Orchard), Nv. brochus (Orchard), Nv. aff. brochus (Orchard), Tr. ex gr. homeri (Bender), Tr. hungaricus (Kozur & Mostler), Tr. ex gr. hungaricus (Kozur & Mostler), Tr. symmetricus (Orchard), Tr. aff. symmetricus (Orchard), and Triassospathodus sp. that is correlated with the Tr. symmetricus Zone.

    Abstract The neutron and gamma imaging facility placed at the tangential channel of the TRIGA-ACPR from INR was used for tomography investigations on a test object with good results and shortly followed its involvement for tomography investigations on prehistoric statues of clay from the Arges County Museum. This activity was performed in connection with a research contract with IAEA with title “The neutron and gamma imaging method combined with neutron-based analytical methods for cultural heritage research”, in the frame of a current CRP, that helps curators to reveal the internal structure and composition of the objects. The detector system has been developed based on two interchangeable scintillators, one for thermal neutrons and the other one for gamma radiations, a mirror of float glass coated with aluminum and two interchangeable CCD cameras. Experiments of tomography imaging for two prehistoric statues of clay with CCD STARLIGHT XPRESS SXV-H9 camera with XD-4 type image intensifier are presented in this paper. The tomography reconstructions with Octopus software have shown the potential of good results even for 100 projections/180 0 . This was a good opportunity for the dissemination of the investigation methods based on neutrons for cultural heritage and beyond this area.

    In the Middle Anisian the opening of the Neo-Tethys started and this is characterized by a significant change in deposition in the whole Western Tethys Realm. In the Dinarides the Middle to Late Anisian tectonostratigraphic and basin evolution is mirrored by their sedimentary successions. In the Middle Anisian, the evolution of the shallow-water Ravni Carbonate Ramp ended relatively abrupt in the late Pelsonian: a rapid decrease of carbonate production is accompanied by formation of a horst-and-graben topography. This change is expressed by the change in deposition from shallow-water carbonates to deepwater sedimentary rocks, i.e. the Ravni Carbonate Ramp experienced a drowning. Contemporaneously neptunian dikes were formed in the underlying Ravni Formation, filled with deep-water limestones. In the grabens, near to the newly formed escarpments mass transport deposits accumulated. During the time span late Pelsonian to middle Illyrian a general deepening trend is mirrored in the sedimentological trend and the microfacies characteristics. Fossilla - gerst?tten (mainly cephalopods) and hardgrounds occur widespread in the deeper-water red nodular limestones formed widespread above the Ravni Carbonate Ramp. Around the middle/late Illyrian boundary a second intense pulse of tectonic motions, related to the onset of volcanic activity, resulted in a crosscut of the older horst-and-graben topo graphy. A second generation of neptunian dikes was formed, the blocks tilted, and again mass transport deposits accumulated near to escarpments. The late Illyrian is characterized by an overall deepening trend expressed also in a change in the microfacies characteristics to radiolarian-rich wacke- to packstones. In cases even radio larites or silicified limestones are characteristic sedimentary rocks in late Illyrian to Ladinian times beside silicified volcano-sedimentary rocks. This paper will define the late Middle-Late Anisian red nodular limestones and related sedimentary rocks with mass transport deposits overlying the Ravni Carbonate Ramp on base of new sedimen tological, stratigraphic and micro facies data following the international rules and standards. The palaeo geographic position together with characteristic litho- and microfacies features cause the lithostratigraphic definition of the different units. Included in the newly introduced Bulog group are: 1) the emended and formalized Bulog Formation and 2) the newly introduced and defined komarani Formation. The type section of the Bulog Formation east of Sarajevo (Han vidovic, central Bosnia and Herzegovina) is revisited. The komarani Formation is introduced with the type section in komarani village (Zlatar Mt. in SW Serbia). The reference sections for the Bulog Formation in SW Serbia (klisura quarry on Zlatibor Mt.), Bosnia and Herzegovina (Pridvorica locality at Romanija Mt.) and in Montenegro (Boljevici near virpazar), are defined. In the reference sections some characteristic lithological and microfacies features are better preserved as in the type-section and included in the emendation and formalization of the Bulog Formation. The Bulog Formation at the type-section and all reference sections are in the Late Triassic overlain by the shallow-water carbonates of the Wetterstein and Dachstein Carbonate Platforms. Age and facies equivalent red nodular limestones deposited in the outer shelf region are part of the Middle to Late Triassic Hallstatt Limestone succession. In the type-region of the Hallstatt Limestones these late Middle to Late Anisian red nodular limestones are named Schreyeralm Limestones. The name Schreyeralm Limestone was introduced earlier as the name Bulog Limestones. It is discussed if also in the Dinarides the name Schreyeralm Limestone should be used for such Anisian red nodular limestones deposited in the outer shelf region, for priority reasons, or if they should be included into the Bulog Formation to avoid confusion, for historical reasons.

    The deep polar ice cores provide reference records commonly employed in global correlation of past climate events. However, temporal divergences reaching up to several thousand years (ka) exist between ice cores over the last climatic cycle. In this context, we are hereby introducing the Antarctic Ice Core Chronology 2012 (AICC2012), a new and coherent timescale developed for four Antarctic ice cores, namely Vostok, EPICA Dome C (EDC), EPICA Dronning Maud Land (EDML) and Talos Dome (TALDICE), alongside the Greenlandic NGRIP record. The AICC2012 timescale has been constructed using the Bayesian tool Datice (Lemieux-Dudon et al., 2010) that combines glaciological inputs and data constraints, including a wide range of relative and absolute gas and ice stratigraphic markers. We focus here on the last 120 ka, whereas the companion paper by Bazin et al. (2013) focuses on the interval 120-800 ka. Compared to previous timescales, AICC2012 presents an improved timing for the last glacial inception, respecting the glaciological constraints of all analyzed records. Moreover, with the addition of numerous new stratigraphic markers and improved calculation of the lock-in depth (LID) based on δ15N data employed as the Datice background scenario, the AICC2012 presents a slightly improved timing for the bipolar sequence of events over Marine Isotope Stage 3 associated with the seesaw mechanism, with maximum differences of about 600 yr with respect to the previous Datice-derived chronology of Lemieux-Dudon et al. (2010), hereafter denoted LD2010. Our improved scenario confirms the regional differences for the millennial scale variability over the last glacial period: while the EDC isotopic record (events of triangular shape) displays peaks roughly at the same time as the NGRIP abrupt isotopic increases, the EDML isotopic record (events characterized by broader peaks or even extended periods of high isotope values) reached the isotopic maximum several centuries before. It is expected that the future contribution of both other long ice core records and other types of chronological constraints to the Datice tool will lead to further refinements in the ice core chronologies beyond the AICC2012 chronology. For the time being however, we recommend that AICC2012 be used as the preferred chronology for the Vostok, EDC, EDML and TALDICE ice core records, both over the last glacial cycle (this study), and beyond (following Bazin et al., 2013). The ages for NGRIP in AICC2012 are virtually identical to those of GICC05 for the last 60.2 ka, whereas the ages beyond are independent of those in GICC05modelext (as in the construction of AICC2012, the GICC05modelext was included only via the background scenarios and not as age markers). As such, where issues of phasing between Antarctic records included in AICC2012 and NGRIP are involved, the NGRIP ages in AICC2012 should therefore be taken to avoid introducing false offsets. However for issues involving only Greenland ice cores, there is not yet a strong basis to recommend superseding GICC05modelext as the recommended age scale for Greenland ice cores. © Author(s) 2013.     Abstract Sunken lanes are roads or tracks, 2 m or more wide, that are incised at least 0.5 m, but often by several meters, below the general level of the surrounding land surface. They are formed by the passage of people, animals, vehicles and erosion by water and gravity. Although these anthropogenic landforms are quite common worldwide they received limited interest by the international scientific community. This comprehensive review analyzed all available information on their characteristics, development and functions in landscapes. Most research on sunken lanes has been conducted in Europe, whereas sunken lanes have been occasionally reported in other continents as well. Major topics addressed are spatial distribution, origin and development, morphology, erosion rates, hydrology, ecology, management, geotourism and research needs. Mean dimensions of sunken lanes reported for various regions vary widely: i.e. 30–2300 m for their length; 0.6–12.5 m for their depth and 2–36 m for their top width. Typical sunken lane densities in European regions (10 to 100 km2 large) characterized by such landforms range between 0.2 and 0.5 km km−2 but for smaller areas ( Sunken lane formation results from interactions between natural factors (i.e. lithology and soils, topography, climate, vegetation) and anthropogenic factors (i.e. traffic, land use and management). Rock type, weathering status and soil types control the erodibility of hillslope materials and hence the development and preservation of sunken lanes. Sunken lanes have been reported in several lithologies but most have been studied in loess regions. Sunken lanes, can be initiated at topographic landscape positions with a much lower slope gradient and corresponding contributing area than those needed to initiate classical gullies, due to the combined action of natural (i.e. concentrated flow erosion and mass movements) and anthropogenic processes (i.e. erosion by animal and human trampling, wheel traffic and digging). Once formed, medium to long-term average incision rates of unpaved bare sunken lanes are 1 to 5 cm year−1 often exceeding erosion rates on nearby cropland by at least one order of magnitude. Sunken lanes perform many functions in landscapes i.e. microclimatological, hydrological, geomorphological, ecological, transport, aesthetic, geotouristic, educational, scientific, strategic, and historical functions. Sunken lanes represent long-standing heritage of past agricultural landscapes and, taking into account their natural and cultural assets, justifies their protection. Unfortunately in several regions, sunken lanes are threatened by urban sprawl, agricultural intensification or land consolidation programs. It remains a challenge for environmental planners to conserve this characteristic geomorphosite for the Anthropocene and to reconcile its competing functions.

    A mastodon tooth has been found at Husnicioara coal open pit, in Mehedinţi district (southwestern Romania). It originates from the Lower Pliocene (Dacian) gravel and sand deposits lying just above the coal bed IV, mined in this quarry. The tooth exposing zygodont features undoubtedly belongs to Mammut borsoni (“Borson’s mastodont”). Although this species is very common in the Pliocene vertebrate faunas from this part of Europe, until now it was missing from the Lower Pliocene (Dacian) assemblage’s lists in our country.

    Superconducting polycrystalline samples (Bi6Pb0.4)(Sr1.8Ba0.2)(Ca1_xSmx)2Cu3Oy with 0^le; x ≤ 0.05 were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction measurements showed the influence of Sm concentration on the phase purity of samples. The influence of partial substitution of Ca by Sm on the normal state properties and the flux dynamics were investigated by electrical resistance versus temperature and systematic a.c. susceptibility measurements function of temperature and Hac field amplitude. The evolution of some parameters sensitive to Sm concentration were evaluated from resistivity data and a.c. susceptibility data.
