Blogpost, http://www.martingrandjean.ch/mapping-unesco-intangible-cultural-heritage/; The creation of a list of intangible cultural elements to preserve (ICH, UNESCO) should be understood as a kind of reaction to the vast World Heritage List (WHC, UNESCO), highly politicized “wonders of the world” directory. For many reasons, related to the preservation of ancient monuments, the Western-centric definition of the terms “cultural” or “heritage” or because we find many European countries actively involved in United Nations programs, Europe is over-represented in the World Heritage list.

Nancy Ing is perhaps best known to Western readers for her translations of the short stories of Chen Jo-hsi, the Taiwanese writer who settled on the mainland, but later left to relate her experiences of life during the Cultural Revolution. This collection of poetry written by Chinese on Taiwan, not as contemporary as the sub-title would have us believe, is not likely to have a similar impact, despite Mrs. Ing's competent translations. The poems were originally translated over a number of years for inclusion in The Chinese Pen quarterly. Unfortunately, as poets who trans- lated their own work do not feature in this collection, the book is less representative than it might be, but it is nevertheless a worthwhile addition to the library shelves and the dual language text will be a useful aid for some.
