    Authors: Isvoranu, Theodor; Dabîca, Mircea;

    În cursul cercetărilor sistematice întreprinse în Sectorul Sud al sitului Histria în perioada 2013– 2017, au fost recoltate 85 de piese monetare, dintre care au fost identificate 68 exemplare (80%). Săpăturile au vizat limita nord‐ vestică a sectorului, corespunzând părții de vest a incintei și compartimentărilor unui important edificiu identificat încă din anii 2011– 2012. Dimensiunile lotului monetar indică o anumită dinamică a prezenței monetare într‐ o zonă probabil intens locuită din Histria romană între a doua jumătate a secolului al II‐ lea p. Chr. şi sfârşitul Tetrarhiei. Datorită restrângerii incintei fortificate şi implicit a suprafeţei urbane în perioada Imperiului târziu, zona fostului edificiu monumental a ajuns în partea extra muros și a fost suprapusă de două niveluri ale necropolei. Cele 68 monede sunt repartizate cronologic după cum urmează : șase exemplare din perioada anterioară stăpânirii romane, 40 monede din perioada Principatului (șapte denari, 18 antoninieni, un sestertius, un dupondius și 13 emisiuni provinciale), 16 monede din perioada romană târzie și șase monede bizantine din secolul al VI‐ lea. Alături de emisiuni deja atestate în descoperirile de la Histria, au fost înregistrate și rarități, precum : o monedă din perioada târzie a autonomiei atelierului istrian, purtând o contramarcă inedită (nr. 6) ; emisiuni istriene puțin cunoscute de la Antoninus Pius și Caracalla (nr. 8 şi 13) respectiv o monedă pseudoautonomă cu legenda ICTPI gravată într‐ un mod neobișnuit (nr. 14) ; 4 assaria de la Nicopolis ad Istrum cu revers de tip încă neatestat pentru perioada când L. Aurelius Gallus a fost guvernator al Moesiei Inferior, mai precis anii 202– 205 (nr. 12) ; unicul antoninian de la Gordian III înregistrat până acum la Histria (nr. 27) ; un antoninian emis de Vabalathus (nr. 38). Structura lotului confirmă în general observațiile anterioare – prilejuite de publicarea în 2014 a unui prim lot de monede – privind prezența monetară în sudul Histriei. Cele mai multe monede au apărut în poziție secundară, neavând semnificație stratigrafică. Excepție fac unele exemplare găsite în dărâmătura zidurilor și pe nivelul de călcare contemporan edificiului cercetat, cel puțin 16 dintre ele putând fi folosite ca repere cronologice. Materialul monetar indică o ipotetică ridicare a marelui edificiu, probabil de utilitate publică, în prima parte a secolului al III‐ lea p. Chr. După o posibilă distrugere prin incendiere în timpul „ războiului scitic”, acesta a fost probabil parţial refăcut, eventual în vremea lui Aurelian sau Probus şi a funcţionat cel puţin până la începutul celui de‐ al doilea deceniu al secolului al IV‐ lea, când a fost devastat definitiv, aparent în cursul unui alt incendiu. Monedele pătrunse sporadic ulterior nu mai reflectă o locuire a zonei, ci sunt de pus în relaţie mai curând cu amenajări funerare din a doua jumătate a secolului al IV‐ lea şi mai târzii. Pentru o imagine generală, este anexată lista completă a descoperirilor monetare de la Histria – Sectorul Sud. During the 2013– 2017 systematic research undertaken in the South Sector of the archaeological site Histria, 85 coins were collected, out of which 68 pieces (80%) were identified. The excavations have been focused on the northwest boundary of the sector, corresponding to the western part of the enclosure and the compartments of an important edifice identified since 2011– 2012. The size of the coin batch indicates a certain dynamic of monetary presence in an area probably intensely inhabited in the Roman Histria between the second half of the 2nd century AD and the end of the Tetrarchy. Due to the restriction of the fortified enclosure and implicitly of the urban area during the Late Roman Empire, the area of the great edifice was abandoned to the extra muros zone and was overlapped by two levels of necropolis. The 68 coins are chronologically distributed as follows : six coins from the Greek period, 40 coins from the period of Principate (seven denars, 18 antoninians, one sestertius, one dupondius, 13 provincial coins), 16 Late Roman coins and six Byzantine coins from the 6th century AD. Along with monetary issues already documented in the finds at Histria, there are also rarities such as : a coin from the late period of the city''s autonomy, bearing an uncommon countermark (No. 6) ; Istrian coins by Antoninus Pius and Caracalla, of less known types (Nos. 8 and 13), respectively a pseudo‐ autonomous coin with the ICTPI legend engraved in an unusual way (No. 14) ; a piece of 4 assaria of Nicopolis ad Istrum, with a type of reverse not yet documented for the time when L. Aurelius Gallus was governor of Moesia Inferior, more precisely 202– 205 AD (No. 12) ; the single one antoninianus from Gordian III so far registered at Histria (No. 27) ; an antoninianus issued by Vabalathus (No. 38). The structure of the batch generally confirms the previous remarks – occasioned by the publication of the first batch of coins in 2014 – about the monetary presence in the southern area of Histria. Most of the coins were found in a secondary position, with no stratigraphic significance. Exceptions are made by some pieces found in the debris of the walls and on the treading level of the excavated building, at least 16 of which could constitute chronological points of reference. The numismatic material indicates a hypothetical building of the great edifice, probably of public utility, in the first part of the 3rd century AD. After a possible destruction by fire during the “ Scythian War”, it was probably partially rebuilt during the reigns of Aurelian or Probus and functioned until the beginning of the second decade of the 4th century AD, when it was finally devastated, apparently in the course of another fire. The coins sporadically penetrated later do not testify the habitation of the area but are related rather to the funerals during the second half of the 4th century AD and later. For a general overview, the full list of the coin finds at Histria – South Sector is attached. Isvoranu Theodor, Dabîca Mircea.     Authors: Isvoranu, T.; Dabîca, M.;

    During the systematic archaeological investigations taking place in the southern side of Histria in 2011– 2012, several dozens of ancient coins were discovered in the main trenches located between the “Southern Sector” and the “Basilica extra muros Sector”. Among the 37 identified ones, six were Greek coins issued before the Roman rule at Histria, 27 were Greek and Roman coins from the age of the Principate, three coins were dated to the Late Roman Empire and a single one to the Early Byzantine period. Most coins were found among the remains of a large building, constructed perhaps at the beginning of the 3rd century AD, and which was affected by the events of the “ Scythian war”, being definitively destroyed by fire during the first two decades of the 4th century AD, as indicated by the monetary pieces captured under its ruins, the latest one from the end of the Tetrarchy. Several provincial and imperial coins bear traces of burning, melted metal depositions, sometimes portions of their surface being heavily melted. From another context comes the most recent coin, dating to Justinian I, found in the zone of the cobblestone platforms from the southern extremity of the site, presumably related to the harbor development during the 6th century AD. Rezumat : În cursul cercetărilor sistematice desfăşurate în sudul staţiunii arheologice Histria în perioada 2011– 2012 au rezultat câteva zeci de monede antice, descoperite în secţiunile magistrale efectuate între sectoarele Sud şi Basilica extra muros. Dintre cele 37 de monede identificate, şase sunt emisiuni greceşti din perioada anterioară stăpânirii romane la Histria, 27 de monede greceşti şi romane din epoca Principatului, trei din Imperiul târziu şi o piesă din perioada protobizantină. Cele mai multe piese monetare provin din zona de identificare a rămăşiţelor unui mare edificiu ridicat probabil la începutul secolului III, afectat de evenimentele „ războiului scitic” şi probabil distrus definitiv de un incendiu în cursul primelor două decenii ale secolului IV, aşa cum indică monedele surprinse sub dărâmăturile sale, cea mai târzie datând de la sfârşitul Tetrarhiei. Mai multe monede provinciale şi imperiale poartă urme de ardere, porţiuni topite sau depuneri de metal topit. De un alt context se leagă o monedă de la Iustinian I, găsită în zona platformelor de piatră din extremitatea sudică a sitului, bănuite a aparţine unei amenajări portuare din secolul VI.     The report presents the results of the excavation that took place in 2007 at the medieval fortress of Feldioara/ Marienburg. The primary objective was to obtain samples of environmental data – animal and plant remains – from identifiable, transitional contexts, assessing the ecological impact of the castle’s construction. Five trenches were opened at the fortress site, yielding prehistoric (Neolithic, Bronze Age, Hallstatt, La Tène) and medieval pottery, a few metal objects, animal bones and a coin issued during the reign of Carol Robert. In one of the trenches was re-identified the wall dating from the first phase assigned to the Teutonic Knights. Raportul prezintă rezultatele sondajelor efectuate în 2007 la cetatea Feldioara/ Marienburg cu scopul obţinerii de date privind mediul înconjurător (oase de animale, resturi de plante) şi impactul ecologic al construirii fortificaţiei, în special a primei faze, considerate a aparţine cavalerilor teutoni. Au fost efectuate cinci scurte secţiuni din care s-au recoltat fragmente ceramice preistorice (Neolitic, Epoca Bronzului, Hallstatt, La Tène) şi medievale, mici obiecte metalice, oase de animale şi o monedă emisă de Carol Robert. Într-una dintre secţiuni a fost reidentificat zidul fazei I atribuit teutonilor. Pluskowski Aleks, Ioniţă Adrian, Seetah Krish. Excavations at the Medieval Fortress in Feldioara/Marienburg, 2007.     Authors: Oţa, Silviu; Oţa, Liana; Georgescu, Migdonia; Popa, Elek;

    Cercetările arheologice întreprinse în cetatea de la Caraşova-Grad (com. Caraşova, jud. Caraş-Severin), în anii 1998, 2000 şi 2001, au dus la descoperirea unui număr relativ important de piese de metal, sticlă, os şi piatră. Dat fiind caracterul cercetărilor (fortificaţia este în stare avansată de degradare din cauza intervenţiilor căutătorilor de comori), dar şi faptului că încetarea funcţionării ei a survenit ca urmare a unor distrugeri violente în cursul secolului al XVI-lea, cea mai mare parte a pieselor de metal, os, piatră şi sticlă nu provine din contexte stratigrafice clare. Cele mai multe obiecte mărunte aparţin secolelor XV– XVI, fiind datate în ultimele faze de funcţionare a cetăţii. Locurile în care au fost descoperite, precum şi poziţia stratigrafică a pieselor aflate in situ confirmă că cetatea a fost supusă unor atacuri şi a suferit distrugeri masive în special în secolul al XVI-lea. During the archaeological excavations made in Caraşova-Grad fortress (comm. Caraşova, Caraş-Severin County) in 1998, 2000 and 2001, a relatively great number of metal, glass, bone and stone items was discovered. The majority of these items were not found in doubtless stratigraphic contexts, due to some reasons : the character of the field researches (today, the fortress is in a precarious condition, as a consequence of the destructions, mostly belonging to treasure hunters) ; the fact that Caraşova ceased to function after violent destructions during the 16th century. The majority of the small finds was dated in the 15th– 16th centuries, belonging to the last phases of the fortress. The places of discoveries, and the stratigraphic context of the items found in situ confirm the supposition that Caraşova was attacked and suffered massive destructions, especially during the 16th century.     Un număr de 42 de monede greceşti (cele mai multe emise şi/ sau în circulaţie la Histria de‐ a lungul perioadei autonome, precum şi câteva emise de Histria de‐ a lungul perioadei romane) au fost descoperite în cursul campaniilor arheologice 2013‐ 2016 din Sectorul Acropolă Centru‐ Sud de la Histria. Monedele, realizate din cupru şi aliaje ale cuprului, au constituit subiectul unei analize compoziţionale non‐ destructive utilizând un spectrometru cu fluorescenţă de raze X (XRF) portabil, cu scopul de a determina trenduri şi alegeri tehnologice în producerea monedelor. Compoziţia acestor piese a fost comparată cu cea a unui lot de monede provenind din săpături mai vechi efectuate la Histria. A number of 42 Greek coins (most of them issued and/ or circulated at Histria during the autonomous period of the city and several issued by Histria during Roman times) were found during the 2013‐ 2016 archaeological campaigns conducted in the Acropolis Centre‐ South Sector. The coins, made of copper and copper‐ based alloys, were subject to a non‐ invasive compositional analysis using a portable X‐ Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer, in order to determine trends and technological choices in the coinage production. The composition of these items was compared to that characterising a batch of coins found at Histria during older excavations. Ţârlea Alexandra, Georgescu Migdonia, Vîlcu Aurel. The compositional analysis of copper and bronze Greek coins found at Histria (Acropolis Centre-South Sector) using a portable X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer.     Authors: Oţa, Silviu; Dragotă, Aurel; Rustoiu, Gabriel T.;

    Prezentul studiu face o analiză a brăţărilor torsionate şi a celor împletite cu plăcuţe la capete. Prima parte prezintă istoricul cercetării în România. Urmează repertoriul descoperirilor sistematizat pe provincii, tipul descoperirilor, materialele de execuţie şi tehnicile utilizate. În funcţie de tehnicile de execuţie a corpului brăţărilor, a formelor şi decorului plăcuţelor au fost stabilite tipologia pieselor pentru teritoriul actual al României. Spre final, este realizată o cronologie relativă şi una absolută a brăţărilor, fiind luat în considerare în special şi spaţiul Bulgariei şi Serbiei estice. Au fost clasificate astfel brăţări care au corpul torsionat şi cele cu corpul împletit. Primele cuprind trei mari tipuri şi câteva subtipuri. Brăţările care au corpul împletit cuprind şi ele trei tipuri. În final, au fost stabilite ariile de difuzare cronologică şi spaţială a tipurilor de brăţări stabilite în sud-estul Europei. În ceea ce priveşte brăţările care au corpul torsionat, se disting mai multe arii sau zone de difuzare. Avem astfel un grup de brăţări (Dinogetia) databil în secolele X– XI din Dobrogea, cu analogii în spaţiul rusesc şi Bulgaria. Urmează o brăţară caracteristică zonei estice a Balcanilor datată în a doua jumătate a secolului al XIII-lea şi începutul celui următor (Mihail Kogălniceanu). Cel de-al treilea grup este format de piesele din Moldova de la Oţeleni şi Voineşti, databile în a doua jumătate a secolului XIII. Un alt grup este contituit din piese din diferite regiuni ale României (Transilvania, Dobrogea, Moldova), datate din a doua jumătate a secolului al XIII-lea până la mijlocul celui următor (Păcuiul lui Soare, Amnaş, Voineşti). Cel mai târziu grup este format de piesele de la Basarabi, Jiana Mare şi piesele din Banat. Ele se datează la sfârşitul veacului al XIV-lea şi probabil începutul celui următor. Lor li se mai adaugă şi piese fără analogii directe cum ar fi cele de le Runcu (sec. XIII), Schela Cladovei (cca. 1325– 1420). Brăţările din sârme împletite, mai puţin utilizate, se concentrează în Oltenia la Gogoşu (sfârşitul secolului al XIV-lea şi începului secolului al XV-lea) şi Şuşiţa (sfârşitul secolului al XIV-lea) şi un exemplar în Moldova la Voineşti (a doua jumătate a secolului al XIII-lea). This paper analyses the torsioned bracelets, and the knitted bracelets, with plaques at the ends. The first part synthesizes the stage of the research in Romania. The catalogue of the discoveries, systematized on provinces, type of the findings, materials and techniques used for bracelets are the following parts. According to the execution techniques used for the bracelets, and to the shapes and ornaments of the plaques it was proposed a typology of the items for the present-day territory of Romania. The relative and absolute chronology of this type of bracelets is also discussed, taking into account the discoveries from Bulgaria and eastern Serbia, too. The bracelets were divided into torsioned items, and knitted items. The torsioned bracelets are divided in three main types and some sub-types. The typology of the knitted bracelets includes three types. Finally, the chronological and the diffusion areas were determined for the south-eastern Europe. Several diffusion areas of the torsioned bracelets could be defined. The first group (Dinogetia) was dated in the 10th – 11th centuries in Dobruja, with analogies in Bulgaria and the Russian territory. The next bracelet (Mihail Kogălniceanu) is characteristic to the eastern Balkans, and it is dated in the second half of the 13th century and the beginning of the following century. The third group includes the items found in Moldavia, in Oţeleni and Voineşti, dated in the second half of the 13th century. Another group is formed by the items from different regions of Romania (Transilvania, Dobruja, Moldavia), dated between the second half of the 13th century until the middle of the 14th century.(Păcuiul lui Soare, Amnaş, Voineşti). The bracelets from Basarabi, Jiana Mare and those found in Banat are the latest group, dated late 14th and perhaps early 15th century. Bracelets without direct analogies, such as Runcu (13th century) and Schela Cladovei (cca 1325– 1420) are also discussed. Bracelets made of knitted wires, less used, are concentrated in Oltenia, at Gogoşu (end 14th – early 15th century) and Şuşiţa (late 14th century), and only one found in Moldavia, at Voineşti (second half of the 13th century).     Authors: Palincaș, N.;

    Scopul acestui raport preliminar asupra săpăturilor preventive desfășurate în 2019– 2020 în Așezarea B a cunoscutei dave de la Popești (jud. Giurgiu) – situl identificat de Radu Vulpe ca Argedava din izvoarele antice – este acela de a atrage atenția asupra nevoii de a modifica imaginea noastră cu privire la structura davei, precum și asupra faptului că zona din sit care este sursa acestor noi informații – respectiv cimitirul satului actual – este distrusă treptat de înmormântări, în timp ce resursele disponibile pentru salvarea informației arheologice sunt disproporționat de reduse după orice standarde, și cu atât mai mult prin comparație cu importanța descoperirilor in discuție. Locuirile pre‑ și post‑dava nu vor fi tratate aici. Chiar și acelea aparținând davei sunt prezentate selectiv și în principal pe baza observațiilor făcute în timpul săpăturii, deoarece, până acum, cea mai mare parte a artefactelor nu au putut fi curățate și deci cu atât mai puțin interpretate. Ce rezultă din săpăturile din 2019– 2020 din aria cimitirului este că Aşezarea B nu era o zonă utilizată exclusiv pentru locuire de către populaţia de rând, aşa cum s‑a crezut anterior, ci avea cartiere specializate pe ritualuri publice (cu clădiri mari şi vetre decorate), probabil metalurgia fierului, sigur producţie şi comerţ cu vin. Astfel, dava în întregul său devine o aşezare urbană de complexitate mult sporită faţă de ce s‑a ştiut anterior. Aceste date contribuie la mai buna înţelegere a proceselor economice, sociale şi politice care au făcut posibilă extraordinara realizare care a fost formarea primului stat dac. Totuşi, dacă nu se vor lua rapid măsuri pentru conservare sau/ şi cercetare adecvată, mare parte a acestui potenţial de informaţie va fi pierdut. The aim of this preliminary report on the preventive excavations carried out in 2019– 2020 in Settlement B of the well‑known dava at Popești (Giurgiu County, in southern Romania) – the site identified by Radu Vulpe with Argedava – is to draw attention to the changes that need to be made to our previous image of the structure of the dava as well as to the fact that the area that is the source of this new information – the cemetery of the modern village – is gradually being destroyed by ongoing burials while the resources available for the rescue of the archaeological data are meagre in comparison to the importance of the findings. The pre‑ and post‑dava habitations will not be discussed here. Even those belonging to the dava period are presented selectively, and based mainly on the observations made during the excavations, as so far the vast majority of the artefacts could not be cleaned, let alone interpreted. What emerged from the 2019– 2020 excavations in the cemetery area is that Settlement B was not used exclusively for habitation by commoners, as previously believed, as it had specialized neighbourhoods for public rituals (with large buildings and decorated hearths), possibly iron metallurgy, and certainly wine production and trade. Thus, the dava is a much more complex urban settlement than previously envisaged. These data potentially contribute to a better understanding of the economic, social and political processes that led to the extraordinary achievement that was the formation of the first Dacian state. However, unless urgent measures for preservation and/ or research are taken, a large part of the still available information will be lost forever. Palincaş Nona. The new structure of the dava at Popeşti (Giurgiu County, southeastern Romania, 2nd century BC – ca. AD 6), based on the 2019–2020 preventive excavations. The first data.     Authors: Petrică, Florin-Gabriel; Cârciumaru, Marin; Claudiu Năstase, Mihai;

    The present study discusses the results of the archaeological research conducted at the Strâmbeanu Family chapel from Pitaru, Potlogi commune, Dâmbovița County. The lack of written documentary sources regarding the family’s genealogy (with some of its members featuring the votive picture in the narthex of the chapel) and the uncertainties related to the year of the chapel’s construction, represent shortages that the study of the archaeological artefacts and the anthropological research tried to overcome. Carried out between December 2019 and January 2020, as part of the preliminary stage of the church’s restoration project, the archaeological excavations managed to offer new historical meanings to a definitory monument of Wallachia’s religious architecture at the dawn of modernity. Seven funerary complexes with several individuals have been uncovered, a situation largely triggered by the re-burials in a relatively narrow space. Two graves had funerary inventories consisting of seal rings with heraldic representations, clothing accessories and coins. Studiul prezintă rezultatele cercetărilor arheologice efectuate la Biserica Strâmbeanu din satul Pitaru, comuna Potlogi, jud. Dâmbovița. Lipsa unor surse documentare edite sau a unor studii privind genealogia membrilor familiei Strâmbeanu, ale căror chipuri se văd în tabloul votiv din pronaos, incertitudinile legate de anul fondării lăcașului de cult sunt probleme care au încercat să fie surmontate de cercetarea arheologică. Desfășurate în perioada decembrie 2019 – ianuarie 2020, ca urmare a inițierii proiectului de restaurare a bisericii, săpăturile arheologice au reușit să ofere noi valențe istorice unui ansamblu definitoriu pentru arhitectura religioasă munteană de la începuturile modernității. Au fost scoase la iveală şapte complexe funerare conţinând mai mulţi indivizi, situaţie datorată în mare parte reînhumărilor într-un spațiu relativ mic. Două morminte au avut inventar funerar constând în inele digitale cu reprezentări heraldice, accesorii vestimentare şi monede. Petrică Florin-Gabriel, Cârciumaru Marin, Claudiu Năstase Mihai.     Authors: Isvoranu, Theodor; Dabîca, Mircea;

    În cursul cercetărilor sistematice întreprinse în Sectorul Sud al sitului Histria în perioada 2013– 2017, au fost recoltate 85 de piese monetare, dintre care au fost identificate 68 exemplare (80%). Săpăturile au vizat limita nord‐ vestică a sectorului, corespunzând părții de vest a incintei și compartimentărilor unui important edificiu identificat încă din anii 2011– 2012. Dimensiunile lotului monetar indică o anumită dinamică a prezenței monetare într‐ o zonă probabil intens locuită din Histria romană între a doua jumătate a secolului al II‐ lea p. Chr. şi sfârşitul Tetrarhiei. Datorită restrângerii incintei fortificate şi implicit a suprafeţei urbane în perioada Imperiului târziu, zona fostului edificiu monumental a ajuns în partea extra muros și a fost suprapusă de două niveluri ale necropolei. Cele 68 monede sunt repartizate cronologic după cum urmează : șase exemplare din perioada anterioară stăpânirii romane, 40 monede din perioada Principatului (șapte denari, 18 antoninieni, un sestertius, un dupondius și 13 emisiuni provinciale), 16 monede din perioada romană târzie și șase monede bizantine din secolul al VI‐ lea. Alături de emisiuni deja atestate în descoperirile de la Histria, au fost înregistrate și rarități, precum : o monedă din perioada târzie a autonomiei atelierului istrian, purtând o contramarcă inedită (nr. 6) ; emisiuni istriene puțin cunoscute de la Antoninus Pius și Caracalla (nr. 8 şi 13) respectiv o monedă pseudoautonomă cu legenda ICTPI gravată într‐ un mod neobișnuit (nr. 14) ; 4 assaria de la Nicopolis ad Istrum cu revers de tip încă neatestat pentru perioada când L. Aurelius Gallus a fost guvernator al Moesiei Inferior, mai precis anii 202– 205 (nr. 12) ; unicul antoninian de la Gordian III înregistrat până acum la Histria (nr. 27) ; un antoninian emis de Vabalathus (nr. 38). Structura lotului confirmă în general observațiile anterioare – prilejuite de publicarea în 2014 a unui prim lot de monede – privind prezența monetară în sudul Histriei. Cele mai multe monede au apărut în poziție secundară, neavând semnificație stratigrafică. Excepție fac unele exemplare găsite în dărâmătura zidurilor și pe nivelul de călcare contemporan edificiului cercetat, cel puțin 16 dintre ele putând fi folosite ca repere cronologice. Materialul monetar indică o ipotetică ridicare a marelui edificiu, probabil de utilitate publică, în prima parte a secolului al III‐ lea p. Chr. După o posibilă distrugere prin incendiere în timpul „ războiului scitic”, acesta a fost probabil parţial refăcut, eventual în vremea lui Aurelian sau Probus şi a funcţionat cel puţin până la începutul celui de‐ al doilea deceniu al secolului al IV‐ lea, când a fost devastat definitiv, aparent în cursul unui alt incendiu. Monedele pătrunse sporadic ulterior nu mai reflectă o locuire a zonei, ci sunt de pus în relaţie mai curând cu amenajări funerare din a doua jumătate a secolului al IV‐ lea şi mai târzii. Pentru o imagine generală, este anexată lista completă a descoperirilor monetare de la Histria – Sectorul Sud. During the 2013– 2017 systematic research undertaken in the South Sector of the archaeological site Histria, 85 coins were collected, out of which 68 pieces (80%) were identified. The excavations have been focused on the northwest boundary of the sector, corresponding to the western part of the enclosure and the compartments of an important edifice identified since 2011– 2012. The size of the coin batch indicates a certain dynamic of monetary presence in an area probably intensely inhabited in the Roman Histria between the second half of the 2nd century AD and the end of the Tetrarchy. Due to the restriction of the fortified enclosure and implicitly of the urban area during the Late Roman Empire, the area of the great edifice was abandoned to the extra muros zone and was overlapped by two levels of necropolis. The 68 coins are chronologically distributed as follows : six coins from the Greek period, 40 coins from the period of Principate (seven denars, 18 antoninians, one sestertius, one dupondius, 13 provincial coins), 16 Late Roman coins and six Byzantine coins from the 6th century AD. Along with monetary issues already documented in the finds at Histria, there are also rarities such as : a coin from the late period of the city''s autonomy, bearing an uncommon countermark (No. 6) ; Istrian coins by Antoninus Pius and Caracalla, of less known types (Nos. 8 and 13), respectively a pseudo‐ autonomous coin with the ICTPI legend engraved in an unusual way (No. 14) ; a piece of 4 assaria of Nicopolis ad Istrum, with a type of reverse not yet documented for the time when L. Aurelius Gallus was governor of Moesia Inferior, more precisely 202– 205 AD (No. 12) ; the single one antoninianus from Gordian III so far registered at Histria (No. 27) ; an antoninianus issued by Vabalathus (No. 38). The structure of the batch generally confirms the previous remarks – occasioned by the publication of the first batch of coins in 2014 – about the monetary presence in the southern area of Histria. Most of the coins were found in a secondary position, with no stratigraphic significance. Exceptions are made by some pieces found in the debris of the walls and on the treading level of the excavated building, at least 16 of which could constitute chronological points of reference. The numismatic material indicates a hypothetical building of the great edifice, probably of public utility, in the first part of the 3rd century AD. After a possible destruction by fire during the “ Scythian War”, it was probably partially rebuilt during the reigns of Aurelian or Probus and functioned until the beginning of the second decade of the 4th century AD, when it was finally devastated, apparently in the course of another fire. The coins sporadically penetrated later do not testify the habitation of the area but are related rather to the funerals during the second half of the 4th century AD and later. For a general overview, the full list of the coin finds at Histria – South Sector is attached. Isvoranu Theodor, Dabîca Mircea.     Authors: Isvoranu, T.; Dabîca, M.;

    During the systematic archaeological investigations taking place in the southern side of Histria in 2011– 2012, several dozens of ancient coins were discovered in the main trenches located between the “Southern Sector” and the “Basilica extra muros Sector”. Among the 37 identified ones, six were Greek coins issued before the Roman rule at Histria, 27 were Greek and Roman coins from the age of the Principate, three coins were dated to the Late Roman Empire and a single one to the Early Byzantine period. Most coins were found among the remains of a large building, constructed perhaps at the beginning of the 3rd century AD, and which was affected by the events of the “ Scythian war”, being definitively destroyed by fire during the first two decades of the 4th century AD, as indicated by the monetary pieces captured under its ruins, the latest one from the end of the Tetrarchy. Several provincial and imperial coins bear traces of burning, melted metal depositions, sometimes portions of their surface being heavily melted. From another context comes the most recent coin, dating to Justinian I, found in the zone of the cobblestone platforms from the southern extremity of the site, presumably related to the harbor development during the 6th century AD. Rezumat : În cursul cercetărilor sistematice desfăşurate în sudul staţiunii arheologice Histria în perioada 2011– 2012 au rezultat câteva zeci de monede antice, descoperite în secţiunile magistrale efectuate între sectoarele Sud şi Basilica extra muros. Dintre cele 37 de monede identificate, şase sunt emisiuni greceşti din perioada anterioară stăpânirii romane la Histria, 27 de monede greceşti şi romane din epoca Principatului, trei din Imperiul târziu şi o piesă din perioada protobizantină. Cele mai multe piese monetare provin din zona de identificare a rămăşiţelor unui mare edificiu ridicat probabil la începutul secolului III, afectat de evenimentele „ războiului scitic” şi probabil distrus definitiv de un incendiu în cursul primelor două decenii ale secolului IV, aşa cum indică monedele surprinse sub dărâmăturile sale, cea mai târzie datând de la sfârşitul Tetrarhiei. Mai multe monede provinciale şi imperiale poartă urme de ardere, porţiuni topite sau depuneri de metal topit. De un alt context se leagă o monedă de la Iustinian I, găsită în zona platformelor de piatră din extremitatea sudică a sitului, bănuite a aparţine unei amenajări portuare din secolul VI.     The report presents the results of the excavation that took place in 2007 at the medieval fortress of Feldioara/ Marienburg. The primary objective was to obtain samples of environmental data – animal and plant remains – from identifiable, transitional contexts, assessing the ecological impact of the castle’s construction. Five trenches were opened at the fortress site, yielding prehistoric (Neolithic, Bronze Age, Hallstatt, La Tène) and medieval pottery, a few metal objects, animal bones and a coin issued during the reign of Carol Robert. In one of the trenches was re-identified the wall dating from the first phase assigned to the Teutonic Knights. Raportul prezintă rezultatele sondajelor efectuate în 2007 la cetatea Feldioara/ Marienburg cu scopul obţinerii de date privind mediul înconjurător (oase de animale, resturi de plante) şi impactul ecologic al construirii fortificaţiei, în special a primei faze, considerate a aparţine cavalerilor teutoni. Au fost efectuate cinci scurte secţiuni din care s-au recoltat fragmente ceramice preistorice (Neolitic, Epoca Bronzului, Hallstatt, La Tène) şi medievale, mici obiecte metalice, oase de animale şi o monedă emisă de Carol Robert. Într-una dintre secţiuni a fost reidentificat zidul fazei I atribuit teutonilor. Pluskowski Aleks, Ioniţă Adrian, Seetah Krish. Excavations at the Medieval Fortress in Feldioara/Marienburg, 2007.     Authors: Oţa, Silviu; Oţa, Liana; Georgescu, Migdonia; Popa, Elek;

    Cercetările arheologice întreprinse în cetatea de la Caraşova-Grad (com. Caraşova, jud. Caraş-Severin), în anii 1998, 2000 şi 2001, au dus la descoperirea unui număr relativ important de piese de metal, sticlă, os şi piatră. Dat fiind caracterul cercetărilor (fortificaţia este în stare avansată de degradare din cauza intervenţiilor căutătorilor de comori), dar şi faptului că încetarea funcţionării ei a survenit ca urmare a unor distrugeri violente în cursul secolului al XVI-lea, cea mai mare parte a pieselor de metal, os, piatră şi sticlă nu provine din contexte stratigrafice clare. Cele mai multe obiecte mărunte aparţin secolelor XV– XVI, fiind datate în ultimele faze de funcţionare a cetăţii. Locurile în care au fost descoperite, precum şi poziţia stratigrafică a pieselor aflate in situ confirmă că cetatea a fost supusă unor atacuri şi a suferit distrugeri masive în special în secolul al XVI-lea. During the archaeological excavations made in Caraşova-Grad fortress (comm. Caraşova, Caraş-Severin County) in 1998, 2000 and 2001, a relatively great number of metal, glass, bone and stone items was discovered. The majority of these items were not found in doubtless stratigraphic contexts, due to some reasons : the character of the field researches (today, the fortress is in a precarious condition, as a consequence of the destructions, mostly belonging to treasure hunters) ; the fact that Caraşova ceased to function after violent destructions during the 16th century. The majority of the small finds was dated in the 15th– 16th centuries, belonging to the last phases of the fortress. The places of discoveries, and the stratigraphic context of the items found in situ confirm the supposition that Caraşova was attacked and suffered massive destructions, especially during the 16th century.     Un număr de 42 de monede greceşti (cele mai multe emise şi/ sau în circulaţie la Histria de‐ a lungul perioadei autonome, precum şi câteva emise de Histria de‐ a lungul perioadei romane) au fost descoperite în cursul campaniilor arheologice 2013‐ 2016 din Sectorul Acropolă Centru‐ Sud de la Histria. Monedele, realizate din cupru şi aliaje ale cuprului, au constituit subiectul unei analize compoziţionale non‐ destructive utilizând un spectrometru cu fluorescenţă de raze X (XRF) portabil, cu scopul de a determina trenduri şi alegeri tehnologice în producerea monedelor. Compoziţia acestor piese a fost comparată cu cea a unui lot de monede provenind din săpături mai vechi efectuate la Histria. A number of 42 Greek coins (most of them issued and/ or circulated at Histria during the autonomous period of the city and several issued by Histria during Roman times) were found during the 2013‐ 2016 archaeological campaigns conducted in the Acropolis Centre‐ South Sector. The coins, made of copper and copper‐ based alloys, were subject to a non‐ invasive compositional analysis using a portable X‐ Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometer, in order to determine trends and technological choices in the coinage production. The composition of these items was compared to that characterising a batch of coins found at Histria during older excavations. Ţârlea Alexandra, Georgescu Migdonia, Vîlcu Aurel. The compositional analysis of copper and bronze Greek coins found at Histria (Acropolis Centre-South Sector) using a portable X-Ray fluorescence spectrometer.     Authors: Oţa, Silviu; Dragotă, Aurel; Rustoiu, Gabriel T.;

    Prezentul studiu face o analiză a brăţărilor torsionate şi a celor împletite cu plăcuţe la capete. Prima parte prezintă istoricul cercetării în România. Urmează repertoriul descoperirilor sistematizat pe provincii, tipul descoperirilor, materialele de execuţie şi tehnicile utilizate. În funcţie de tehnicile de execuţie a corpului brăţărilor, a formelor şi decorului plăcuţelor au fost stabilite tipologia pieselor pentru teritoriul actual al României. Spre final, este realizată o cronologie relativă şi una absolută a brăţărilor, fiind luat în considerare în special şi spaţiul Bulgariei şi Serbiei estice. Au fost clasificate astfel brăţări care au corpul torsionat şi cele cu corpul împletit. Primele cuprind trei mari tipuri şi câteva subtipuri. Brăţările care au corpul împletit cuprind şi ele trei tipuri. În final, au fost stabilite ariile de difuzare cronologică şi spaţială a tipurilor de brăţări stabilite în sud-estul Europei. În ceea ce priveşte brăţările care au corpul torsionat, se disting mai multe arii sau zone de difuzare. Avem astfel un grup de brăţări (Dinogetia) databil în secolele X– XI din Dobrogea, cu analogii în spaţiul rusesc şi Bulgaria. Urmează o brăţară caracteristică zonei estice a Balcanilor datată în a doua jumătate a secolului al XIII-lea şi începutul celui următor (Mihail Kogălniceanu). Cel de-al treilea grup este format de piesele din Moldova de la Oţeleni şi Voineşti, databile în a doua jumătate a secolului XIII. Un alt grup este contituit din piese din diferite regiuni ale României (Transilvania, Dobrogea, Moldova), datate din a doua jumătate a secolului al XIII-lea până la mijlocul celui următor (Păcuiul lui Soare, Amnaş, Voineşti). Cel mai târziu grup este format de piesele de la Basarabi, Jiana Mare şi piesele din Banat. Ele se datează la sfârşitul veacului al XIV-lea şi probabil începutul celui următor. Lor li se mai adaugă şi piese fără analogii directe cum ar fi cele de le Runcu (sec. XIII), Schela Cladovei (cca. 1325– 1420). Brăţările din sârme împletite, mai puţin utilizate, se concentrează în Oltenia la Gogoşu (sfârşitul secolului al XIV-lea şi începului secolului al XV-lea) şi Şuşiţa (sfârşitul secolului al XIV-lea) şi un exemplar în Moldova la Voineşti (a doua jumătate a secolului al XIII-lea). This paper analyses the torsioned bracelets, and the knitted bracelets, with plaques at the ends. The first part synthesizes the stage of the research in Romania. The catalogue of the discoveries, systematized on provinces, type of the findings, materials and techniques used for bracelets are the following parts. According to the execution techniques used for the bracelets, and to the shapes and ornaments of the plaques it was proposed a typology of the items for the present-day territory of Romania. The relative and absolute chronology of this type of bracelets is also discussed, taking into account the discoveries from Bulgaria and eastern Serbia, too. The bracelets were divided into torsioned items, and knitted items. The torsioned bracelets are divided in three main types and some sub-types. The typology of the knitted bracelets includes three types. Finally, the chronological and the diffusion areas were determined for the south-eastern Europe. Several diffusion areas of the torsioned bracelets could be defined. The first group (Dinogetia) was dated in the 10th – 11th centuries in Dobruja, with analogies in Bulgaria and the Russian territory. The next bracelet (Mihail Kogălniceanu) is characteristic to the eastern Balkans, and it is dated in the second half of the 13th century and the beginning of the following century. The third group includes the items found in Moldavia, in Oţeleni and Voineşti, dated in the second half of the 13th century. Another group is formed by the items from different regions of Romania (Transilvania, Dobruja, Moldavia), dated between the second half of the 13th century until the middle of the 14th century.(Păcuiul lui Soare, Amnaş, Voineşti). The bracelets from Basarabi, Jiana Mare and those found in Banat are the latest group, dated late 14th and perhaps early 15th century. Bracelets without direct analogies, such as Runcu (13th century) and Schela Cladovei (cca 1325– 1420) are also discussed. Bracelets made of knitted wires, less used, are concentrated in Oltenia, at Gogoşu (end 14th – early 15th century) and Şuşiţa (late 14th century), and only one found in Moldavia, at Voineşti (second half of the 13th century).     Authors: Palincaș, N.;

    Scopul acestui raport preliminar asupra săpăturilor preventive desfășurate în 2019– 2020 în Așezarea B a cunoscutei dave de la Popești (jud. Giurgiu) – situl identificat de Radu Vulpe ca Argedava din izvoarele antice – este acela de a atrage atenția asupra nevoii de a modifica imaginea noastră cu privire la structura davei, precum și asupra faptului că zona din sit care este sursa acestor noi informații – respectiv cimitirul satului actual – este distrusă treptat de înmormântări, în timp ce resursele disponibile pentru salvarea informației arheologice sunt disproporționat de reduse după orice standarde, și cu atât mai mult prin comparație cu importanța descoperirilor in discuție. Locuirile pre‑ și post‑dava nu vor fi tratate aici. Chiar și acelea aparținând davei sunt prezentate selectiv și în principal pe baza observațiilor făcute în timpul săpăturii, deoarece, până acum, cea mai mare parte a artefactelor nu au putut fi curățate și deci cu atât mai puțin interpretate. Ce rezultă din săpăturile din 2019– 2020 din aria cimitirului este că Aşezarea B nu era o zonă utilizată exclusiv pentru locuire de către populaţia de rând, aşa cum s‑a crezut anterior, ci avea cartiere specializate pe ritualuri publice (cu clădiri mari şi vetre decorate), probabil metalurgia fierului, sigur producţie şi comerţ cu vin. Astfel, dava în întregul său devine o aşezare urbană de complexitate mult sporită faţă de ce s‑a ştiut anterior. Aceste date contribuie la mai buna înţelegere a proceselor economice, sociale şi politice care au făcut posibilă extraordinara realizare care a fost formarea primului stat dac. Totuşi, dacă nu se vor lua rapid măsuri pentru conservare sau/ şi cercetare adecvată, mare parte a acestui potenţial de informaţie va fi pierdut. The aim of this preliminary report on the preventive excavations carried out in 2019– 2020 in Settlement B of the well‑known dava at Popești (Giurgiu County, in southern Romania) – the site identified by Radu Vulpe with Argedava – is to draw attention to the changes that need to be made to our previous image of the structure of the dava as well as to the fact that the area that is the source of this new information – the cemetery of the modern village – is gradually being destroyed by ongoing burials while the resources available for the rescue of the archaeological data are meagre in comparison to the importance of the findings. The pre‑ and post‑dava habitations will not be discussed here. Even those belonging to the dava period are presented selectively, and based mainly on the observations made during the excavations, as so far the vast majority of the artefacts could not be cleaned, let alone interpreted. What emerged from the 2019– 2020 excavations in the cemetery area is that Settlement B was not used exclusively for habitation by commoners, as previously believed, as it had specialized neighbourhoods for public rituals (with large buildings and decorated hearths), possibly iron metallurgy, and certainly wine production and trade. Thus, the dava is a much more complex urban settlement than previously envisaged. These data potentially contribute to a better understanding of the economic, social and political processes that led to the extraordinary achievement that was the formation of the first Dacian state. However, unless urgent measures for preservation and/ or research are taken, a large part of the still available information will be lost forever. Palincaş Nona. The new structure of the dava at Popeşti (Giurgiu County, southeastern Romania, 2nd century BC – ca. AD 6), based on the 2019–2020 preventive excavations. The first data.     Authors: Petrică, Florin-Gabriel; Cârciumaru, Marin; Claudiu Năstase, Mihai;

    The present study discusses the results of the archaeological research conducted at the Strâmbeanu Family chapel from Pitaru, Potlogi commune, Dâmbovița County. The lack of written documentary sources regarding the family’s genealogy (with some of its members featuring the votive picture in the narthex of the chapel) and the uncertainties related to the year of the chapel’s construction, represent shortages that the study of the archaeological artefacts and the anthropological research tried to overcome. Carried out between December 2019 and January 2020, as part of the preliminary stage of the church’s restoration project, the archaeological excavations managed to offer new historical meanings to a definitory monument of Wallachia’s religious architecture at the dawn of modernity. Seven funerary complexes with several individuals have been uncovered, a situation largely triggered by the re-burials in a relatively narrow space. Two graves had funerary inventories consisting of seal rings with heraldic representations, clothing accessories and coins. Studiul prezintă rezultatele cercetărilor arheologice efectuate la Biserica Strâmbeanu din satul Pitaru, comuna Potlogi, jud. Dâmbovița. Lipsa unor surse documentare edite sau a unor studii privind genealogia membrilor familiei Strâmbeanu, ale căror chipuri se văd în tabloul votiv din pronaos, incertitudinile legate de anul fondării lăcașului de cult sunt probleme care au încercat să fie surmontate de cercetarea arheologică. Desfășurate în perioada decembrie 2019 – ianuarie 2020, ca urmare a inițierii proiectului de restaurare a bisericii, săpăturile arheologice au reușit să ofere noi valențe istorice unui ansamblu definitoriu pentru arhitectura religioasă munteană de la începuturile modernității. Au fost scoase la iveală şapte complexe funerare conţinând mai mulţi indivizi, situaţie datorată în mare parte reînhumărilor într-un spațiu relativ mic. Două morminte au avut inventar funerar constând în inele digitale cu reprezentări heraldice, accesorii vestimentare şi monede. Petrică Florin-Gabriel, Cârciumaru Marin, Claudiu Năstase Mihai.
