This paper analyzes the relationship between permanent monuments and temporary art projects, as temporality is one of the strategies employed by Romanian artists to counterbalance the support that the Romanian state has shown only towards monuments and memorials dedicated to affirming its value. The complex nature of public art requires a careful consideration of the different dimensions this practice employs, and for that the Western debate on this matter can be a reference point in understanding Romanian public art. We will be looking at possible aspects of the functions of these two main directions in Romanian public art, as they stand methodically one in opposition to the other, in connection with the texts of Piotr Piotrowski (Art and Democracy in Post-communist Europe, 2012) and Boris Groys (Art Power, 2008).

This paper analyses the novel A Swallow of 1000 Years by Tonči Petrasov Marović. The topic of a neglected girl and her parents’ marriage problems is intertwined with the Mediterranean fairytale and mythical dimension, since the girl and her father are aided by personified helpers: a swallow, butterflies and a tree. The real social context after the Second World War is also outlined. The affiliation of helpers to the earthly and celestial dimension creates the totality of the world, which is understood by children’s logic. On the other hand, the linguistic layer introduces the adult logic. The narrative structure of the novel is complex: in the framework story, the narrator waits for a serious surgery and meets a girl whose life is narrated to him by a tree which he can see through the hospital window. As the main narrative line, the tree’s story introduces several focalisers: a girl, her deceased father, butterflies, and a swallow which the girl’s father saved in his childhood. The novel is closed by its framework story: the girl leaves her cold-hearted mother and stepfather and goes with the narrator to Dalmatia, which was also her father’s homeland. A happy outcome was already announced by her father’s dreams. In the analysis of the narrative structure and stylistic features of the novel, the paper considers the function of fairytale and mythical elements, which intertwine children’s logic with the wisdom of mature human age.

This paper explores an unsupervised approach to learning a compositional representation function for multi-word expressions (MWEs), and evaluates it on the Tratz dataset, which associates two-word expressions with the semantic relation between the compound constituents (e.g. the label employer is associated with the noun compound government agency) (Tratz, 2011). The composition function is based on recurrent neural networks, and is trained using the Skip-Gram objective to predict the words in the context of MWEs. Thus our approach can naturally leverage large unlabeled text sources. Further, our method can make use of provided MWEs when available, but can also function as a completely unsupervised algorithm, using MWE boundaries predicted by a single, domain-agnostic part-of-speech pattern. With pre-defined MWE boundaries, our method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art performance on the coarse-grained evaluation of the Tratz dataset (Tratz, 2011), with an F1 score of 50.4%. The unsupervised version of our method approaches the performance of the supervised one, and even outperforms it in some configurations.

This paper presents the work done towards developing a speech corpus for Romanian, for automatic speech recognition for the banking domain. This work is done in the context of the Speech2Process project, which aims at creating a system which allows interaction between customers and agents in the contact center much easier. The application to use the banking corpus will provide automatic response to client requests, received through voice communication protocols, in costumer support services.

Vandalism of the content has always been one of the greatest problems for Wikipedia, yet only few completely automatic solutions for solving it have been developed so far. Volunteers still spend large amounts of time correcting vandalized page edits, instead of using this time to improve the quality of the content of articles. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new vandalism detection system, that only uses natural language processing and machine learning techniques. The system has been evaluated on a corpus of real vandalized data in order to test its performance and justify the design choices. The same expert annotated wikitext, extracted from the encyclopedia's database, is used to evaluate different vandalism detection algorithms. The paper presents a critical analysis of the obtained results, comparing them to existing solutions, and suggests different statistical classification methods that bring several improvements to the task at hand.

Abstract The end-Triassic mass extinction is one of the five big extinction events in the Phanerozoic, and its impact on marine organisms has been extensively studied. However, whether the terrestrial ecosystem had begun to deteriorate or even collapsed prior to the end-Triassic mass extinction remains controversial and the related studies in Asia are very limited. In this study, we provide a comprehensive investigation of the sedimentary environments, their implications for floral changes, and the paleoecology during the Norian–Rhaetian transition in Xuanhan area, northeastern Sichuan Basin, Southwest China. The sedimentary environments and climatic conditions changed coupling the transgression and regression caused by the tectonic movements. Climatic oscillations were identified during the Norian–Rhaetian transition in the Xuanhan area, including a short-term cooling event. The diversity and composition of the plant communities changed through the Norian–Rhaetian transition in Xuanhan area, but the terrestrial ecosystem as a whole didn’t collapse or deteriorate prior to the end-Triassic mass extinction.

Rughiniş discusses three controversial issues with regard to surveys of the Romani population: ethnonym use, self-identification versus hetero-attribution of Romani ethnicity, and the use of variables in reference to Romani settlements. She uses data sets from ten surveys of Romanian Roma between 2000 and 2008 as well as the 2002 Romanian Census to compare two types of samples, and to explore the consequences of several research choices for the quality of the data. In addition to specific methodological issues, Rughiniş addresses the relevance to such surveys of qualitative research in Romani communities.
