We present unpublished observations of Comet Donati 1858 V recently recovered in an old storage facility at the University Observatory in Oslo. Carefully-made drawings reveal temporal changes in the appearance of this comet. Fine structures in the tail were noted, some of which were short lived. Envelopes in the comet's head, apparently due to outgassing from the nucleus, were monitored over several days. Astrometric positions of the comet's head derived by various combinations of telescopes and micrometers reveal a standard deviation of ± 6". Visual polarimetry of the coma and tail revealed polarized light and determined that the polarization plane contained the comet and the Sun. Thus the polarized light from the comet was reflected sunlight. The observations are discussed in relation to contemporary publications. Made available with permission from the journal.

This article investigates the use and non-use of objects with six transitive verbs in a corpus of English football match reports. The verbs were selected on the basis of their frequency as well as their lexico-grammatical features of “footballness” and transitivity. The study suggests that object omission may not be as pervasive as hinted at in previous studies (e.g. Bergh and Ohlander 2016; Ruppenhofer and Michaelis 2010). Regarding potential reasons for object omission, it is uncovered that the football verbs-net, save, play-are more prone to object omission than the general verbs: feed, create, take. This is attributed to the strong attraction of the former to recurrent collocates such as goal and ball. This suggests that verbs used to report on unremarkable and canonical situations (to the game of football) more readily omit the object, albeit not on a general basis, as individual differences between the verbs also emerge.

Its project is to draw detailed maps of syntactic configurations but its place lies in a broader research project, namely the study of functional (or grammatical) categories, their content, number and order. Cartography is inspired by and contributes to research in comparative syntax and typology. It adheres to the view that syntactic structures are uniform, locally simple and both necessary and sufficient to structurally represent the grammatical or functional information relevant for semantic/pragmatic interpretation. Like Minimalism, it attributes a cardinal role to features in syntax but whereas Minimalism focuses on the driving force of uninterpretable features, Cartography is concerned with the inventory of interpretable ones. Cartography contributes to a growing affinity between research in syntactic theory, semantics, discourse and information structure.

Studies within this field of research have the potential to enlighten the puzzle posed by past societies, for example in the field of history, history of science and technology, or fields related to material culture. The military aspects of history are still to be considered among the most popular themes of modern times, generating huge public interest. In the last few decades, serious HEMA study groups have started appearing all over the world – focusing on re-creating a lost martial art. The terminology “Historical European Martial Arts” therefore also refers to modem-day practices of ancient martial arts. Many of these groups focus on a “hands-on” approach, thus bringing practical experience and observation to enlighten their interpretation of the source material. However, most of the time, they do not establish inquiries based on scientific research, nor do they follow methodologies that allow for a critical analysis of the findings or observations. This paper will therefore propose and discuss, ideas on how to bridge the gap between enthusiasts and scholars; since their embodied knowledge, acquired by practice, is of tremendous value for scientific inquiries and scientific experimentation. It will also address HEMA practices in the context of modern day acceptance of experimental (or experiential) processes and their value for research purposes and restoration of an historical praxis. The goal is therefore to sketch relevant methodological and theoretical elements, suitable for a multidisciplinary approach, to HEMA, where the “H” for “historical” matters.

The Senjojiki Bowl has a typical avalanche terrain consisting of8 avalanche tracks. During the last 25 years 16 alpinists and ropeway workers in total have been killed by avalanches. Since no reliable avalanche warning is issued by the Meteorological Agency, the ropeway company and an alpine guide has collected data on avalanches in the bowl since 1987 forthe safety oftheir guests. Using the data over the last three winters, we have analyzed the meteorological conditions leading to larger avalanches descending. It was Dund that the larger avalanches occurred only under the Dllowing simple conditions: l. cold snow storm type in high-winter, 2. warmer snowy type in high-winter, 3. wet snowy type in late winter and 4. rain storm type.

To be fully human in the Greco-Roman world was to be a member of a city. This is unsurprising as cities were the building blocks of Greek and Roman culture and society. The urban landscape of post-Roman Western Europe looked dramatically different, with smaller, less economically diverse cities which played a smaller role in administration. Despite this, Greco-Roman ideas of humans as city-beings remained influential. This article explores this by investigating early medieval descriptions of cynocephali, which sought to determine whether the dog-headed men were human or not. Accounts of the cynocephali that presented them as human showed them living in urban settlements, whereas in reports of non-human cynocephali there are no cities. In exploring interactions between cynocephali and urban settings through ethnographic portrayals and hagiography, this article traces the lingering importance of the city for concepts of humanity.

Examining the boundaries of state–society–citizen–environment after the federal restructuring in Nepal, we ask how do people claim authority or citizenship rights? We theorise state power through the socio-environmental state framework as a set of socio-natural relations in the making, formed by struggles over authority, recognition and environment. Using qualitative data from Barpak, the epicentre of the 2015 earthquake, we capture the politics of natural resource governance that (re)emerged during earthquake reconstruction and local-level elections, illustrating how control over resources is negotiated, disputed, and inscribed in law (land titles and water sources) and landscapes (water sources, earthquake resettlement area, an open-air museum).
