Single, isolated mounds occur on the SE margin and are mainly found on the upper slope between 900 and 650 m water depth, while large mound clusters are found on the SW margin in water depths between 600 and 1,000 m, in a narrow zone almost parallel to the slope. Sedimentation rates on the mounds are higher than on the surrounding seabed as a result of baffling of biogenic carbonate debris and siliciclastic particles by the coral framework covering the mounds. This is confirmed by 210Pb measurements. The individual coral growth rate can be three times higher then the vertical growth rate of the coral cover (±10 mm year−1) which in turn is more than an order of magnitude higher then the present-day overall mound growth rate (±0.25 mm year−1). The presence of extensive hardgrounds and firmgrounds and the three-dimensional coral framework are considered to be responsible for the stability of the relatively steep slopes of the mounds. High current velocities in the intramound areas result in local non-sedimentation and erosion, as is shown by the presence of IRD (ice-rafted debris) lag deposits on the seabed and moats around some of the mounds. The morphology and sedimentology of cold-water coral-covered (mainly Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) mounds on the southern Rockall Trough margins (NE Atlantic Ocean) is discussed and a model describing the development of these mounds is presented.

The kind of information sought concerns the stakeholders, sentiments, geographic information, and everything else related to the territory. However, it is extremely challenging to link sentiments to the three dimensions that constitute geographic information (location, time, and theme). After highlighting the limitations of existing proposals and discussing issues related to textual data, we present a method called OPILAND (OPinion mIning from LAND-use planning documents) designed to semi-automatically mine opinions related to named-entities in specialized contexts. Experiments are conducted on a Thau lagoon dataset (France), and then applied on three datasets that are related to different areas in order to highlight the relevance and the broader applications of our proposal.

This study investigates the factors controlling the differentiation between the microporous and tight facies, and proposes a diagenetic model for the development and preservation of the microporosity in these limestones. The petrophysical properties are not related to the depositional texture, the petrographical content or the mineralogical composition. However, the tight layers contain indications of emersion (e.g.: bird eyes, keystone vugs, and desiccation cracks). The sedimentation in very shallow conditions up to emersion is confirmed by the covariant more positive values of oxygen and carbon isotopes. The microporous intervals systematically occur a few meters below the tight layers affected by emersion. This position strongly suggests the importance of meteoric water input rapidly after sedimentation in the differentiation between tight and microporous limestones. The diagenetic model proposed for the development and preservation of the microporous facies involves partial early cementation of the interstitial mud, mainly composed of low-Mg calcite crystals (sedimentation during a calcite sea period), inside a meteoric phreatic lens by in situ dissolution–reprecipitation processes (“hybrid Ostwald ripening”). This early cementation partly preserves the original microfabric and intercrystalline microporosity and allows the carbonate sediment to resist compaction during burial. The identification of the conditions favorable to the development of microporosity in these Urgonian limestones may improve the knowledge and modeling of some microporous carbonate reservoir rocks.

Herein, we report on an original fabrication route to OER electrocatalysts based on graphitic carbon nitride. In particular, the target systems were deposited on conductive glass substrates via a simple electrophoretic technique and functionalized with highly dispersed noble metals (Au, Ag or Au + Ag) in low amounts by radio frequency (RF)-sputtering under mild conditions. An advanced material characterization revealed the possibility of tailoring carbon nitride morphology as a function of the used precursor and of achieving a homogeneous spatial distribution of the functionalizing metals. The latter ranged from atomically dispersed (silver), to low-sized nanoaggregates (gold) or partially alloyed core-shell nanoparticles (gold+silver), with an intimate metal-nitride interfacial contact. Functional tests evidenced a remarkable sensitivity to Vis light even at low applied potentials, and photoelectrocatalytic performances directly dependent on the nature of metal species and on the features of the underlying carbon nitride deposit. These evidences, rationalized mainly on the basis of Schottky junctions and the possible concurrence of surface plasmon resonance (SPR), candidate the proposed strategy as a versatile route to cheap and efficient OER electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Yet, to date, no study accounts specifically for interferences induced by climate conditions or exogenous disturbances and which can, potentially, affect the quality of tree-ring based process reconstructions. In this paper, we develop a specific procedure allowing evaluation of the quality of reconstructions in five avalanche paths at Oberwald (Swiss Alps). The study is based on possible interferences between snow avalanches, climatic conditions and ecological signals in the tree-ring series. Analysis of past events was based on tree-ring series from 564 heavily affected, multi-centennial European larch trees (Larix decidua Mill.) growing near or next to the avalanche paths. A total of 2389 growth disturbances, such as scars, tangential rows of traumatic resin ducts, compression wood as well as abrupt growth suppressions or releases, were identified in the samples, indicating 43 destructive snow avalanches since AD 1780. At the same time, 31 potential events, which were detected with the conventional Shroder index value, were rejected from the final reconstruction due to potentially strong interferences between the different signals. This high rejection rate underlines the necessity to systematically and carefully discriminate ecological and climatic noise from avalanche-related disturbances. This discrimination is even more so crucial as a significant proportion of dendrogeomorphic studies in the Alps are based on L decidua trees which are cyclically affected by larch budmoth outbreaks. At the tree scale, identification of past mass movements was typically based on the presence of growth anomalies and focused on the presence of scars, tilted or buried trunks, as well as on apex decapitation. In terms of sampling strategy, however, clear guidelines have been largely missing. Most previous work was based either on the sampling of visibly disturbed trees irrespective of their position at the study site or on the systematic sampling of trees evenly distributed along transects. Based on a dense dataset of 323 trees growing on an active landslide body, this study aims at defining guidelines for future tree-ring sampling of landslides. Using random extractions of trees and iterative mapping, we investigate subsets of the full tree-ring sample to define optimal sampling strategy, sample depth and trees for the development of frequency maps of landslide reactivations. We demonstrate that (i) the sampling of 50-100 trees can be sufficient to obtain satisfactory results on landslide frequency without including noise to the dendrogeomorphic record; (ii) increasing growth disturbance thresholds should be adjusted to sample size and are preferable to fixed values; (iii) an even distribution of sampled trees is crucial to increase the reliability of frequency maps, even more so if the reconstruction is based on small sample sizes; and that (iv) the selection of the most frequently disturbed trees is key to reduce uncertainties in the frequency maps. The optimization of sample sizes and the adjustment of sampling strategy will not only facilitate fieldwork and render analyses and interpretation more reliable, but will also ultimately allow reconstruction of time series of past mass movements with reasonable temporal efforts and excellent cost-benefit ratios. Ammonoid taxonomy and a detailed biostratigraphy for this locality are reported herein. One new genus (Palominoceras) and one new species (?Pseudosageceras bullatum) are described. Additionally, based on new data from Palomino Ridge and previous data from neighboring localities in Utah, we porvide here the first quantitative Smithian ammonoid biochronological scheme for the western US basin. This new zonation is based on the Unitary Associations (UA) method. The biochronical sequence comprises five unitary association zones that can be correlated with other localities from the Northern Indian Margin (Salt Range, Pakistan, Spiti, northern India and Tulong, South Tibet). Three unitary association zone (UAZ1, UAZ2 and UAZ3) are defined for the early Smithian, one (UAZ4) spans the entire middle Smithian and one (UAZ5) signifies the first part of the late Smithian. Finally, a hypothetical UAZ6 would represent the second part of the late Smithian.

Plans for the European Proteomics Association (EuPA) were conceived and established during 2004 and 2005, and culminated in the formal inception of the organisation during the 4th HUPO World Congress held in Munich in 2005. The mission from the outset has been three-tiered and is to: i) strengthen the national Proteomics organizations in their efforts; ii) to co-ordinate and provide educational programs, and iii) to advance the networking of scientists through meetings, workshops and student exchange. Linked to the mission were objectives to emphasise the benefits and contributions of Proteomics to biological and industrial researchers, the general public and science policy makers in Europe. In addition, the EuPA set out to promote scientific exchange for all applications and technology development related to Proteomics, and coordinate joint activities of national Proteomics societies at the European level. To achieve these tasks an organisational structure was conceived whereby four Activity Committees (Conferences/Communications, Education, EuPA-HUPO-Interactions and Funding) were implemented and a General Council consisting of all member countries. This paper describes a system facilitating information retrieval in a set of textual documents by tackling the automatic titling and subtitling issue. Automatic titling here involves providing both informative and catchy titles. We thus propose two different approaches based on NLP, text mining, and Web Mining techniques. The first one (POSTIT) consists of extracting relevant noun phrases from texts as candidate titles. An original approach combining statistical criteria and noun phrase positions in the text helps in collecting informative titles and subtitles. The second approach (NOMIT) is based on various assumptions made on POSTIT and aims to generate both informative and catchy titles. Both approaches are applied to a corpus of news articles, then evaluated according to two criteria, i.e. informativeness and catchiness.

Single, isolated mounds occur on the SE margin and are mainly found on the upper slope between 900 and 650 m water depth, while large mound clusters are found on the SW margin in water depths between 600 and 1,000 m, in a narrow zone almost parallel to the slope. Sedimentation rates on the mounds are higher than on the surrounding seabed as a result of baffling of biogenic carbonate debris and siliciclastic particles by the coral framework covering the mounds. This is confirmed by 210Pb measurements. The individual coral growth rate can be three times higher then the vertical growth rate of the coral cover (±10 mm year−1) which in turn is more than an order of magnitude higher then the present-day overall mound growth rate (±0.25 mm year−1). The presence of extensive hardgrounds and firmgrounds and the three-dimensional coral framework are considered to be responsible for the stability of the relatively steep slopes of the mounds. High current velocities in the intramound areas result in local non-sedimentation and erosion, as is shown by the presence of IRD (ice-rafted debris) lag deposits on the seabed and moats around some of the mounds. The morphology and sedimentology of cold-water coral-covered (mainly Lophelia pertusa and Madrepora oculata) mounds on the southern Rockall Trough margins (NE Atlantic Ocean) is discussed and a model describing the development of these mounds is presented.

The kind of information sought concerns the stakeholders, sentiments, geographic information, and everything else related to the territory. However, it is extremely challenging to link sentiments to the three dimensions that constitute geographic information (location, time, and theme). After highlighting the limitations of existing proposals and discussing issues related to textual data, we present a method called OPILAND (OPinion mIning from LAND-use planning documents) designed to semi-automatically mine opinions related to named-entities in specialized contexts. Experiments are conducted on a Thau lagoon dataset (France), and then applied on three datasets that are related to different areas in order to highlight the relevance and the broader applications of our proposal.

This study investigates the factors controlling the differentiation between the microporous and tight facies, and proposes a diagenetic model for the development and preservation of the microporosity in these limestones. The petrophysical properties are not related to the depositional texture, the petrographical content or the mineralogical composition. However, the tight layers contain indications of emersion (e.g.: bird eyes, keystone vugs, and desiccation cracks). The sedimentation in very shallow conditions up to emersion is confirmed by the covariant more positive values of oxygen and carbon isotopes. The microporous intervals systematically occur a few meters below the tight layers affected by emersion. This position strongly suggests the importance of meteoric water input rapidly after sedimentation in the differentiation between tight and microporous limestones. The diagenetic model proposed for the development and preservation of the microporous facies involves partial early cementation of the interstitial mud, mainly composed of low-Mg calcite crystals (sedimentation during a calcite sea period), inside a meteoric phreatic lens by in situ dissolution–reprecipitation processes (“hybrid Ostwald ripening”). This early cementation partly preserves the original microfabric and intercrystalline microporosity and allows the carbonate sediment to resist compaction during burial. The identification of the conditions favorable to the development of microporosity in these Urgonian limestones may improve the knowledge and modeling of some microporous carbonate reservoir rocks.

Herein, we report on an original fabrication route to OER electrocatalysts based on graphitic carbon nitride. In particular, the target systems were deposited on conductive glass substrates via a simple electrophoretic technique and functionalized with highly dispersed noble metals (Au, Ag or Au + Ag) in low amounts by radio frequency (RF)-sputtering under mild conditions. An advanced material characterization revealed the possibility of tailoring carbon nitride morphology as a function of the used precursor and of achieving a homogeneous spatial distribution of the functionalizing metals. The latter ranged from atomically dispersed (silver), to low-sized nanoaggregates (gold) or partially alloyed core-shell nanoparticles (gold+silver), with an intimate metal-nitride interfacial contact. Functional tests evidenced a remarkable sensitivity to Vis light even at low applied potentials, and photoelectrocatalytic performances directly dependent on the nature of metal species and on the features of the underlying carbon nitride deposit. These evidences, rationalized mainly on the basis of Schottky junctions and the possible concurrence of surface plasmon resonance (SPR), candidate the proposed strategy as a versatile route to cheap and efficient OER electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Yet, to date, no study accounts specifically for interferences induced by climate conditions or exogenous disturbances and which can, potentially, affect the quality of tree-ring based process reconstructions. In this paper, we develop a specific procedure allowing evaluation of the quality of reconstructions in five avalanche paths at Oberwald (Swiss Alps). The study is based on possible interferences between snow avalanches, climatic conditions and ecological signals in the tree-ring series. Analysis of past events was based on tree-ring series from 564 heavily affected, multi-centennial European larch trees (Larix decidua Mill.) growing near or next to the avalanche paths. A total of 2389 growth disturbances, such as scars, tangential rows of traumatic resin ducts, compression wood as well as abrupt growth suppressions or releases, were identified in the samples, indicating 43 destructive snow avalanches since AD 1780. At the same time, 31 potential events, which were detected with the conventional Shroder index value, were rejected from the final reconstruction due to potentially strong interferences between the different signals. This high rejection rate underlines the necessity to systematically and carefully discriminate ecological and climatic noise from avalanche-related disturbances. This discrimination is even more so crucial as a significant proportion of dendrogeomorphic studies in the Alps are based on L decidua trees which are cyclically affected by larch budmoth outbreaks. At the tree scale, identification of past mass movements was typically based on the presence of growth anomalies and focused on the presence of scars, tilted or buried trunks, as well as on apex decapitation. In terms of sampling strategy, however, clear guidelines have been largely missing. Most previous work was based either on the sampling of visibly disturbed trees irrespective of their position at the study site or on the systematic sampling of trees evenly distributed along transects. Based on a dense dataset of 323 trees growing on an active landslide body, this study aims at defining guidelines for future tree-ring sampling of landslides. Using random extractions of trees and iterative mapping, we investigate subsets of the full tree-ring sample to define optimal sampling strategy, sample depth and trees for the development of frequency maps of landslide reactivations. We demonstrate that (i) the sampling of 50-100 trees can be sufficient to obtain satisfactory results on landslide frequency without including noise to the dendrogeomorphic record; (ii) increasing growth disturbance thresholds should be adjusted to sample size and are preferable to fixed values; (iii) an even distribution of sampled trees is crucial to increase the reliability of frequency maps, even more so if the reconstruction is based on small sample sizes; and that (iv) the selection of the most frequently disturbed trees is key to reduce uncertainties in the frequency maps. The optimization of sample sizes and the adjustment of sampling strategy will not only facilitate fieldwork and render analyses and interpretation more reliable, but will also ultimately allow reconstruction of time series of past mass movements with reasonable temporal efforts and excellent cost-benefit ratios. Ammonoid taxonomy and a detailed biostratigraphy for this locality are reported herein. One new genus (Palominoceras) and one new species (?Pseudosageceras bullatum) are described. Additionally, based on new data from Palomino Ridge and previous data from neighboring localities in Utah, we porvide here the first quantitative Smithian ammonoid biochronological scheme for the western US basin. This new zonation is based on the Unitary Associations (UA) method. The biochronical sequence comprises five unitary association zones that can be correlated with other localities from the Northern Indian Margin (Salt Range, Pakistan, Spiti, northern India and Tulong, South Tibet). Three unitary association zone (UAZ1, UAZ2 and UAZ3) are defined for the early Smithian, one (UAZ4) spans the entire middle Smithian and one (UAZ5) signifies the first part of the late Smithian. Finally, a hypothetical UAZ6 would represent the second part of the late Smithian.

Plans for the European Proteomics Association (EuPA) were conceived and established during 2004 and 2005, and culminated in the formal inception of the organisation during the 4th HUPO World Congress held in Munich in 2005. The mission from the outset has been three-tiered and is to: i) strengthen the national Proteomics organizations in their efforts; ii) to co-ordinate and provide educational programs, and iii) to advance the networking of scientists through meetings, workshops and student exchange. Linked to the mission were objectives to emphasise the benefits and contributions of Proteomics to biological and industrial researchers, the general public and science policy makers in Europe. In addition, the EuPA set out to promote scientific exchange for all applications and technology development related to Proteomics, and coordinate joint activities of national Proteomics societies at the European level. To achieve these tasks an organisational structure was conceived whereby four Activity Committees (Conferences/Communications, Education, EuPA-HUPO-Interactions and Funding) were implemented and a General Council consisting of all member countries. This paper describes a system facilitating information retrieval in a set of textual documents by tackling the automatic titling and subtitling issue. Automatic titling here involves providing both informative and catchy titles. We thus propose two different approaches based on NLP, text mining, and Web Mining techniques. The first one (POSTIT) consists of extracting relevant noun phrases from texts as candidate titles. An original approach combining statistical criteria and noun phrase positions in the text helps in collecting informative titles and subtitles. The second approach (NOMIT) is based on various assumptions made on POSTIT and aims to generate both informative and catchy titles. Both approaches are applied to a corpus of news articles, then evaluated according to two criteria, i.e. informativeness and catchiness.
