    Authors: Waksman, S.Y.; Carytsiotis, Marie-Myriam;

    International audience; The Türbe excavations provided information about the Byzantine and Turkish periods of Ephesos / Ayasuluk. Chemical analyses confirm the presence of several categories of ceramic imports belonging to the main "middle Byzantine production" that were widespread in the Mediterranean and date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Ephesos is part of the distribution area of this production, together with several other Western Anatolian sites such as Pergamon and the nearby castle of Anaia/Kadikalesi, where it is present in significant quantities. Pottery was also manufactured in Anaia. It was diffused not only at a regional level, as shown here through examples found in Ephesos, but also reached the Crusader states as seen by its noticeable presence in Saint-Jean-d'Acre.Ceramic production in Ephesos is documented in the Türbe excavations through the discovery of rubefied layers, kiln furniture and wasters (Parrer, this volume). Several local groups, showing different chemical features, were identified thanks to local reference samples. These groups do not differ from those previously defined in a preliminary study of the Artemision material. The present study complements the previous chemical characterization and further illustrates the local manufacture of various types of table wares, from coarsely potted plain glazed to more "sophisticated" ceramics of "Islamic" types (turquoise glazed and molded wares). The latter would correspond to the introduction in the local repertoire of new stylistic and technological traditions, a phenomenon which would have occurred at the Beylik period in other Western Anatolian sites as well, such as Milet and Sardis. In Ephesos, the association of turquoise glaze or molded decoration with low-calcareous pastes, instead of calcareous ones, suggests an adaptation of the initial pottery traditions, as may be observed for example in Syria.The high degree of fragmentation of the sherds in the Türbe excavations on the one hand, and the fluvial disturbances of the stratigraphy on the other hand, made it difficult to reconstruct the typo-chronological features of the local repertoire. Some connections could be made with the better preserved material from the Artemision, but were limited within our sampling. It is hoped that further sampling and analyses of ceramics coming from other excavations in Ephesos / Ayasuluk (Tribune, Isa Bey Hammam, etc...) will make it possible for us to give further insight into these questions.

    Authors: Morelle, Nicolas;

    International audience; The Castle of Kantara, a key to the evolution of active defence in the 13th century between the Eastern and the Western Worlds 1 Nicolas Morelle Abstract : Set on a rocky outcrop, this fortress in Cyprus has stood the test of centuries facing the sea and the Mesaoria plain. Despite being abandoned in the 16th century, it still remains a well preserved castle in Cyprus. Today, it serves as an attraction to a few tourists, almost deflecting attention from the political conflict that has divided the island since 1974. (fig. 1) This island in the eastern Mediterranean, off the coasts of Levant and Anatolia was successively in the hands of Romans, then the Arabs and the Byzantines, until the Latins took over in the Middle-Ages. It helps us to develop the discussion on the military evolution that took place between the Ancient period and the present. Geographically, the island is well placed so as to be at the heart of the political, economic and military history of the Mediter-ranean, between the Oriental and the Occidental worlds. It can be seen that the control of Cyprus was important to powerful empires for strategic reasons. The study of Cypriot fortification therefore requires a knowledge and comparative analysis of all the fortified networks along the Mediterranean coasts. This would help define the cultural melting point of technical exchanges and trace the evolution of the art of warfare (poliorcetics) and military architecture during the Middle-Ages in the Mediterranean belt (fig. 2).Through the study of the system of Cypriot fortification, we shall deal with the notions of frontier lines and coastal fortification, compared to Rhodes and Byzantine frontiers.

    Cette étude se centre sur le texte de Melo da Fonseca, en mettant l’accent sur le rôle qu’y joue le castillan. Ainsi, bien que l’on tienne compte de l’ensemble du texte, l’objet principal sera le chapitre III, intitulé « Comparase a nossa lingua com a Castelhana em algumas meudezas ». À travers le repérage et l’interprétation des références de Fonseca au castillan, on essaiera de comprendre les représentations sous-jacentes de cette langue dans le cadre de la tradition historiographique du portugais, en essayant de déterminer dans quelle mesure ces références prolongent (ou pas) le discours métalinguistique préexistant au castillan. O presente estudo aborda o texto de Melo da Fonseca, incidindo sobre o papel aí assumido pelo castelhano. Assim, embora se tenha em conta a globalidade do texto, o principal objeto de atenção será o capítulo III, intitulado «Comparase a nossa lingua com a Castelhana em algumas meudezas». Através do levantamento e interpretação das referências ao castelhano no texto de Fonseca, procurar-se-á aqui aferir o significado das representações a elas subjacentes no quadro da tradição historiográfica do português, tentando determinar em que medida tais referências dão ou não continuidade ao discurso metalinguístico anterior sobre o castelhano.

    The production rates and the inclusive cross sections of the isovector meson $\pi^0$, the isoscalar mesons $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime(958)$, the strange meson $\mathrm{K^0_S}$ and the $\Lambda$ baryon have been measured as functions of scaled energy in hadronic events two-jet events and each jet of three-jet events from hadronic Z decays and compared to Monte Carlo models. The analysis is based on 3.7~million hadronic events collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=91.2$~GeV. The JETSET modelling of the gluon fragmentation into isoscalar mesons is found to be in agreement with the experimental results. HERWIG fails to describe the $\mathrm{K^0_S}$ spectra in gluon-enriched jets and the $\Lambda$ spectra in quark jets.
