In an age where female political representation is far from guaranteed, even in the most gender-oriented Western democracies, I would like to bring the example of a forceful and proud female Ancien Régime ruler: Elisabeth Farnese, the “Termagant Queen of Spain”, who, together with her feeble husband Philip V, “esclavo de sus mujeres”, ruled the Iberian peninsula and the Spanish colonies in both of the Indies, and terrified her native Italian peninsula. Elisabeth has the image of a “strong” and “ambitious”, but also unreliable and outright irrational woman. Philip had found in her his second wife. The already numerous children from his first marriage would precede those of his Italian bride. Yet, Elisabeth’s relentless quest for a dominion for her children, or of a dowry for herself as “administratrix”, kept the European state system in suspense from the end of the Spanish (1701-1714) to the end of the Austrian War of Succession (1740-1748). The multiple twists and turns of Spanish foreign policy are attributed to the de facto absolute government Elisabeth held over her “Imbecile” husband. However, as her legal status was concerned, she was but the spouse of the ruling monarch, who personally incarnated sovereignty. Recent historians have called for a reassessment of Philip’s mental lability (e.g. Henry Kamen), or of the aggressive Spanish foreign policy, or new “Risorgimento” in Italy (Christopher Storss), where the Spanish monarchy succeeded in founding two secondary branches (Parma-Piacenza and Naples), against all odds. Elisabeth correctly understood the Balance of Power in European relations after the Treaty of Utrecht. Yet, there was more than mere political shrewdness. If the Queen was capable of bullying male sovereigns into submission, she exploited legal arguments as well. Not only the historical Spanish presence in Italy, but foremost her position as relative ofthe extinct Farnese and Medici-dynasties, were the trump card in Philip’s hand. She managed to bend and bow Imperial succession law, excluding women, to plant the Bourbon flag in the heart of Habsburg dominated Italy.

The experience of forced migration undergone by African people brought to the Americas might have dispossessed them from their ancestral tongues, but it did not prevent them from aspiring to use language, be it the language of the former slave owner, to express their identity and shared historical experience. Using the example of American poet Langston Hughes and his Cuban peer Nicolás Guillén, this article will highlight the way poets from the African diaspora have influenced and translated each other as a way of bridging the linguistic and cultural gap brought about by history. The literature of the diaspora might well lie in that very rift, which calls for continued translation and rewriting of each other.

This IS is associated with software which helps to reassemble the fragmented reliefs (a digital interactive puzzle), constituting a real tool for researchers and providing the knowledge needed to produce and validate hypotheses about the structures and dimensions of the buildings. The database is then enriched with images of the temple’s extrapolated decoration, which involves 3D modelling of these extrapolations. Talatat indexing was based on the Multilingual Egyptian Thesaurus conventions regarding “passport” data, including iconographic description using descriptive operators called unicos. In the spirit of the international movement in favour of open access to scientific data, the talatat metadata and images are accessible online to researchers working on the proto-Amarna or Amarna periods. The talatat metadata is published using RDFa data model mapping for embedding RDF triples within the XHTML of our web pages, which can be extracted by compliant user agents. This corpus is stored in a secured warehouse with strong human and digital infrastructure for preservation of the images and of their metadata.

However, it does not reflect a monolithic cultural ‘identity’ but rather a real blended cultural practice reconciled at regional levels through ongoing interactions between collective and individual symbolic concepts. In Central Iberia, recent studies of the Bell Beaker funerary contexts have revealed recurrent practices, such the use of artificial caves and hypogea and the extraction and movement of human bones, as in the well-known Camino de las Yeseras site (San Fernando de Henares, Madrid). Our aim is to shed new light on the distribution of Bell Beaker ceramics in funerary structures through "Social Network Analysis". For example, are we able to establish relationships between the decoration of Bell Beaker vases and the individuals buried in single or collective graves, using similarity indexes between ceramics and network representations? Is the presence of some decorations linked to age or gender? Do stylistic identities have any relation to DNA heritage? The degree of similarity between the decorations executed on the vases from single graves and those deposited in collective graves could help to highlight specific burial categories or personae involved in the spread of particular collective decorative patterns. Network analysis tools can lead us to visualise these intra-site interactions, and gain greater understanding of the social context and the diversity of burial dynamics. The vessels analysed belong to eight Bell beaker tombs documented in Camino de las Yeseras during the second half of the third millennium BCE. In relation to the topic of this paper, we want to highlight the presumed impact of intra-site relations that Bell Beaker customs and funerary rituals could have on the consolidation of social inequalities among the first metallurgical societies of the Central Iberian Peninsula.
