The method combines a systematic description of transformations, qualification and classification of references, and visualisation tools that support reasoning tasks inside an object’s lifeline, and across the whole collection of objects. In this section some fundamental epistemological issues will be discussed (diachronic bias, intersubjectivity, historical criticism, etc.). Details will be given on the choices we made in order to describe architectural transformations and to cope with classic uncertainty problems (trustworthiness, precision, credibility, etc.). Section one is concluded by a chapter presenting the set of time-oriented data visualisations designed for section two of the catalogue, and by an overview of that catalogue’s general layout. Rozdział pierwszy porusza podstawowe zagadnienia epistemologiczne związane z analizą ewolucji obiektów architektonicznych (analiza diachroniczna, intersubiektywność, krytyka historyczna, ...) i przedstawia opracowaną przez nas metodę. Poruszamy tu między innymi problem zróżnicowanej precyzji i wiarygodności danych historycznych, klasyfikację transformacji jakim podlegają obiekty architektoniczne, czy rolę wizualizacji w procesach analizy danych historycznych.

L.; Szurek, Boris;Transcription activator-like effectors (TALEs) from the genus Xanthomonas are proteins with the remarkable ability to directly bind the promoters of genes in the plant host to induce their expression, which often helps bacterial colonization. Metaphorically, TALEs act as spies that infiltrate the plant disguised as high-ranking civilians (transcription factors) to trick the plant into activating weak points that allow an invasion. Current knowledge of how TALEs operate allows researchers to predict their activity (counterespionage) and exploit their function, engineering them to do our bidding (a Manchurian agent). This has been possible thanks particularly to the discovery of their DNA binding mechanism, which obeys specific amino acid-DNA correspondences (the TALE code). Here, we review the history of how researchers discovered the way these proteins work and what has changed in the ten years since the discovery of the code. L’article offre un survol des principaux écrits théoriques que Celati a consacré, depuis les années 1970, au problème de l’art et de la peinture : par l’analyse de ces textes, on tente de montrer comment les liens entre image et écriture littéraire sont indissociables chez cet auteur. Nonostante la loro natura frammentaria e spesso inconclusa, gli scritti che Celati ha dedicato negli anni alle arti e alla pittura rivelano, se letti nel loro insieme, una sostanziale continuità di fondo, e un’innegabile concordanza rispetto al più generale pensiero estetico dello scrittore. Il saggio si propone di ripercorrere i brani che, dagli anni Settanta ad oggi, l’autore ha dedicato ad artisti e pittori, dimostrando quanto a fondo la riflessione sull’immagine si leghi in Celati a una parallela meditazione sull’uso e sulla natura della scrittura letteraria.

Ampuero;The versatility and cost efficiency of fibre-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technologies facilitate geophysical monitoring in environments that were previously inaccessible for instrumentation. Moreover, the spatio-temporal data density permitted by DAS naturally appeals to seismic array processing techniques, such as beamforming for source location. However, the measurement principle of DAS is inherently different from that of conventional seismometers, providing measurements of ground strain rather than ground motion, and so the suitability of traditional seismological methods requires in-depth evaluation. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a DAS array in the task of seismic beamforming, in comparison with a co-located nodal seismometer array. We find that, even though the nodal array achieves excellent performance in localising a regional ML 4.3 earthquake, the DAS array exhibits poor waveform coherence and consequently produces inadequate beamforming results that are dominated by the signatures of shallow scattered waves. We demonstrate that this behaviour is likely inherent to the DAS measurement principle, and so new strategies need to be adopted to tailor array processing techniques to this emerging measurement technology. One strategy demonstrated here is to convert the DAS strain rates to particle velocities by spatial integration using the nodal seismometer recordings as a reference, which dramatically improves waveform coherence and beamforming performance and warrants new types of “hybrid” array design that combine dense DAS arrays with sparse seismometer arrays.

In the context of a reform of the French highschool curriculum, teachers were unexpectedly required to use history of mathematics in the classroom, without being instructed how to, and with almost no standard resourcessuch as official guidelines or textbooksto work with. This provides an opportunity to study the work of teachers as designers of teaching material. We set out a research protocol in which five teachers agreed to (independently) design teaching sessions starting from the same document, namely an extract from Euler's Elements of algebra on the numerical approximation of square roots. This paper aims to establish the relevance of this document in this research context.

It has been used in several experiments and end-user applications. We describe its design principles and data and workflow models, then we discuss interoperability challenges in the context of the OpenMinTeD project. The objective of OpenMinTeD (EC/H2020) is to create an infrastructure for Text and Data Mining (TDM) of scientific and scholarly publications. In order to offer to the infrastructure users a single entry point and the widest range of tools as possible, the major European corpus processing engines will be made interoperable, including Argo, DKPro, and GATE. We show that AlvisNLP/ML can be fully integrated into the OpenMinTeD platform while maintaining its originality.

Historians continuously gather data related to their scholarly research from archival visits and background search. Organising and making sense of all this data can be challenging as many historians continue to rely on analog or basic digital tools. We built an integrated note-taking environment for historians which unifies a set of func-tionalities we identified as important for historical research including editing, tagging, searching, sharing and visualization. Our approach was to involve users from the initial stage of brainstorming and requirement analysis through to design, implementation and evaluation. We report on the process and results of our work, and conclude by reflecting on our own experience in conducting user-centered visual analytics design for digital humanities.

This region is one of the few to have allowed human occupations during the dry Marine Isotope Stage 2 and is therefore key to understanding how human populations adapted to environmental changes at this time. This paper focuses on two sites located in Upper Egypt, excavated by the Combined Prehistoric Expedition: E71K18, attributed to the Afian industry and E71K20, attributed to the Silsilian industry. It aims to review the geomorphological and chronological evidence of the sites, present a technological analysis of the lithic assemblages in order to provide data that can be used in detailed comparative studies, which will allow discussion of technological variability in the Late Palaeolithic of the Nile Valley and its place within the regional context. The lithic analysis relies on the chaîne opératoire concept combined with an attribute analysis to allow quantification. This study (1) casts doubts on the chronology of E71K18 and related Afian industry, which could be older or younger than previously suggested, highlights (2) distinct technological characteristics for the Afian and the Silsilian, as well as (3) similar technological characteristics which allow to group them under a same broad techno-cultural complex, distinct from those north or south of the area. ispartof: PLOS ONE vol:12 issue:12 ispartof: location:United States status: published

The method combines a systematic description of transformations, qualification and classification of references, and visualisation tools that support reasoning tasks inside an object’s lifeline, and across the whole collection of objects. In this section some fundamental epistemological issues will be discussed (diachronic bias, intersubjectivity, historical criticism, etc.). Details will be given on the choices we made in order to describe architectural transformations and to cope with classic uncertainty problems (trustworthiness, precision, credibility, etc.). Section one is concluded by a chapter presenting the set of time-oriented data visualisations designed for section two of the catalogue, and by an overview of that catalogue’s general layout. Rozdział pierwszy porusza podstawowe zagadnienia epistemologiczne związane z analizą ewolucji obiektów architektonicznych (analiza diachroniczna, intersubiektywność, krytyka historyczna, ...) i przedstawia opracowaną przez nas metodę. L.; Szurek, Boris;Transcription activator-like effectors (TALEs) from the genus Xanthomonas are proteins with the remarkable ability to directly bind the promoters of genes in the plant host to induce their expression, which often helps bacterial colonization. Metaphorically, TALEs act as spies that infiltrate the plant disguised as high-ranking civilians (transcription factors) to trick the plant into activating weak points that allow an invasion. Current knowledge of how TALEs operate allows researchers to predict their activity (counterespionage) and exploit their function, engineering them to do our bidding (a Manchurian agent). This has been possible thanks particularly to the discovery of their DNA binding mechanism, which obeys specific amino acid-DNA correspondences (the TALE code). Here, we review the history of how researchers discovered the way these proteins work and what has changed in the ten years since the discovery of the code. L’article offre un survol des principaux écrits théoriques que Celati a consacré, depuis les années 1970, au problème de l’art et de la peinture : par l’analyse de ces textes, on tente de montrer comment les liens entre image et écriture littéraire sont indissociables chez cet auteur. Nonostante la loro natura frammentaria e spesso inconclusa, gli scritti che Celati ha dedicato negli anni alle arti e alla pittura rivelano, se letti nel loro insieme, una sostanziale continuità di fondo, e un’innegabile concordanza rispetto al più generale pensiero estetico dello scrittore. Il saggio si propone di ripercorrere i brani che, dagli anni Settanta ad oggi, l’autore ha dedicato ad artisti e pittori, dimostrando quanto a fondo la riflessione sull’immagine si leghi in Celati a una parallela meditazione sull’uso e sulla natura della scrittura letteraria.

Ampuero;The versatility and cost efficiency of fibre-optic distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technologies facilitate geophysical monitoring in environments that were previously inaccessible for instrumentation. Moreover, the spatio-temporal data density permitted by DAS naturally appeals to seismic array processing techniques, such as beamforming for source location. However, the measurement principle of DAS is inherently different from that of conventional seismometers, providing measurements of ground strain rather than ground motion, and so the suitability of traditional seismological methods requires in-depth evaluation. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a DAS array in the task of seismic beamforming, in comparison with a co-located nodal seismometer array. We find that, even though the nodal array achieves excellent performance in localising a regional ML 4.3 earthquake, the DAS array exhibits poor waveform coherence and consequently produces inadequate beamforming results that are dominated by the signatures of shallow scattered waves. We demonstrate that this behaviour is likely inherent to the DAS measurement principle, and so new strategies need to be adopted to tailor array processing techniques to this emerging measurement technology. One strategy demonstrated here is to convert the DAS strain rates to particle velocities by spatial integration using the nodal seismometer recordings as a reference, which dramatically improves waveform coherence and beamforming performance and warrants new types of “hybrid” array design that combine dense DAS arrays with sparse seismometer arrays.

In the context of a reform of the French highschool curriculum, teachers were unexpectedly required to use history of mathematics in the classroom, without being instructed how to, and with almost no standard resourcessuch as official guidelines or textbooksto work with. This provides an opportunity to study the work of teachers as designers of teaching material. We set out a research protocol in which five teachers agreed to (independently) design teaching sessions starting from the same document, namely an extract from Euler's Elements of algebra on the numerical approximation of square roots. This paper aims to establish the relevance of this document in this research context.

It has been used in several experiments and end-user applications. We describe its design principles and data and workflow models, then we discuss interoperability challenges in the context of the OpenMinTeD project. The objective of OpenMinTeD (EC/H2020) is to create an infrastructure for Text and Data Mining (TDM) of scientific and scholarly publications. In order to offer to the infrastructure users a single entry point and the widest range of tools as possible, the major European corpus processing engines will be made interoperable, including Argo, DKPro, and GATE. We show that AlvisNLP/ML can be fully integrated into the OpenMinTeD platform while maintaining its originality.
