This article presents new archaeological observations and multidisciplinary research from Dor, Israel to establish a more reliable relative sea level for the Carmel Coast and Southern Levant between the Middle Bronze Age and the Roman period (ca. 3500–1800 y BP). Our record indicates a period of low relative sea level, around -2.5 m below present, from the Middle Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period (ca. 3500–2200 y BP). This was followed by a rapid rise to present levels, starting in the Hellenistic period and concluding during the Roman period (ca. 2200–1800 y BP). These Roman levels agree with other relative sea-level indications from Israel and other tectonically stable areas in the Mediterranean. Several relative sea-level reconstruction models carried out in the current study provide different predictions due to their parameters and do not model the changes observed from field data which points to a non-isostatic origin for the changes. Long-term low stable Iron Age relative sea level can be seen in Dor, where Iron Age harbor structures remain around the same elevation between ca. 3100–2700 y BP. A similar pattern occurs at Atlit, the Iron Age harbor to the north used continuously from ca. 2900 y BP to the beginning of the Hellenistic period (ca. 2200 y BP). An examination of historical and archaeological sources reveals decline and occasional disappearance of Hellenistic sites along the coast of Israel at ca. 2200 y BP (2ndcentury BCE), as in the case of Yavneh Yam, Ashdod Yam, Straton’s Tower, and tel Taninim. In Akko-Ptolemais, the large harbor installations built in the Hellenistic period were never replaced by a substantial Roman harbor. The conclusions of this research are thus relevant for the sea-level research community and for the historical analyses of the Israeli and South Levantine coastline.

The essay wants to introduce a mapping base, currently in progress, relative to museums, archives of fashion, costume galleries, present in Italy, such as constituent elements for the construction of a tourist guide, dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of knowledge Italian heritage, as well as a possible "offer" to create new spaces for Heritage and Tourism. The data presented here are drawn from the research “Galleries of Costume and Fashion History Museum: Italian Opportunities for International Tourism and Local Development”, planned in Rimini Campus University of Bologna. The general plan of research was officially presented during the 5th International Congress “Science and Technology for the Safeguard of Cultural Heritage in the Mediterranea Basin”, Istanbul Turkey 22-25 November 2011. Given the current research, the general outlines of the project and some initial data provided by the work of historians are provided below without claim of completeness. Abstract Geochemical differentiation of sediment packages framed by surfaces of chronostratigraphic significance represents an effective tool to unravel the stratigraphic architecture of multi-sourced sediment-supply systems on a variety of temporal scales and through a wide spectrum of lithofacies assemblages. Sediment provenance shifts were examined across three-orders of bounding surfaces, arranged in a hierarchy of 105 to 103 years sediment packages, from late Quaternary alluvial, deltaic, coastal and shallow-marine strata of the Po Basin, where controlling factors of sedimentary evolution are firmly constrained by strong age control. A total of 150 samples were analyzed for bulk-sediment geochemistry by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). Geochemically unique catchment lithologies, such as ultramafic rocks and dolostones, were used as end-member grain assemblages to assess clear geochemical signatures, and chemostratigraphic correlations were generated on the basis of key element abundances and ratios. Sequence boundaries originating in response to tectonic uplift and related to 105 years sediment packages are associated with marked, basin-wide changes in sediment composition that reflect phases of substantial basin rearrangement, with strong modification of the drainage patterns. On an intermediate temporal scale (104 years depositional units), large magnitude sea-level fluctuations had a major impact on sediment pathways, producing sharp provenance shifts on a systems tract scale. The Holocene transgressive surface records a substantial change in clastic sediment flux, as the alluvial system turned into a wave-dominated estuary. On the other hand, no notable changes in composition were observed across the maximum flooding surface. Finally, identifiable provenance variations developed on a short-term, facies tract scale (103 years sediment packages) and revealed by lower-rank bounding surfaces denote dramatic changes in sediment dispersal patterns in response to simple autogenic processes, such as channel avulsion and delta lobe switching. In the stratigraphic context provided by the ancient record, such provenance shifts could easily be misinterpreted as the sedimentary expression of higher-rank bounding surfaces. This study supports the robustness of a comprehensive geochemical approach to an improved interpretation of the subsurface geological record across a hierarchy of depositional elements. It shows, however, that provenance shifts at chemofacies boundaries alone cannot be used to infer allogenic or autogenic controls on sedimentation. High-resolution facies analysis within stratigraphically constrained time intervals needs to be considered before promoting predictive relationships between provenance shifts and basin evolution.

The contribution that materials science has made to the understanding of ancient glassmaking is unquestionable, as research undertaken in recent decades has extensively demonstrated. Archaeological glass is far from being a homogeneous class of materials, encompassing objects made for different uses, manufactured in different periods and geographic areas, with a variety of tools and working techniques. If all these factors are not adequately considered when approaching the study of ancient glasses from an archaeometric perspective, data obtained by analyses can incur the risk of being less informative or even misinterpreted. Moving from previously performed research, this paper is aimed at reflecting on the potential of synergistic approaches for the study of archeological glasses, based on the interrelation among different disciplines and fostering the integration of archaeological and historical knowledge with data-driven scientific analyses.

In 2014, a painting attributed to the seventeenth century Dutch artist Jan Ruyscher appeared on the art market. Despite a prestigious career, Ruyscher, who possibly was a pupil of Rembrandt and Hercules Seghers, vanished from art history after his death and was only rediscovered in the 1930s. In this research paper, the combination of multiple analytical techniques ranging from radiocarbon dating of the support material to multispectral imaging and spectroscopic analyses (XRF, SEM-EDS, FTIR and Raman) of the pictorial layer offers a comprehensive analysis of the object. Radiocarbon analyses of the wooden panel indicated that the tree was probably cut down in the mid-eighteenth century, whereas spectroscopic analyses pinpointed the twentieth century as a timeframe for the application of the pictorial layers. The applied methodology sheds new light on the story of the object itself. The painting was created at the earliest in the 1930s possibly as a consequence of the rediscovery of Ruyscher, and the deliberate use of an aged panel supports an intent to deceive and hence classifies the object as a forgery. The painting under study was furthermore compared with artworks of renowned forgers in an attempt to identify the forger in disguise. ISSN:0197-1360 ISSN:1945-2330

AbstractThis paper deals with two teeth (an upper right M1 and an upper right dM2) from the Epigravettian found in the site of Paglicci (Southern Italy) showing interproximal grooves that are situated below the crown, on the root walls just apical to the cementum–enamel junction. These grooves have been examined on a digital microscope which displays 3D images of the analysed surfaces. The images obtained made it possible to interpret these interproximal grooves as tooth picking activities that can be interpreted as an attempt to alleviate sore gums. The comparison with experimental images from available literature made it possible to form hypotheses concerning the nature of the probes that might have been used by the humans.
