In April 2017, Uppsala University Campus Gotland performed an archaeological investigation at Västergarn, 25 kilometers southwest of Visby, as part of an advanced field course in archaeology. In total, two trenches and one test pit were investigated, covering an area of 59m 2. The purpose of the investigation was to, by using a non-invasive investigation method, to trace whether or not the Viking Age/early Medieval settlement that earlier excavations has shown to exist extended further to the north within the semi-circular wall area. The results show that there are good reasons to assume that the settlement that was active here between ca AD 1050-1400 had a larger extension within the wall than previously known. Findings such as cultural layers, decorated pottery, pearls and a coin embossed for the Swedish king Magnus Eriksson around AD 1340, strengthens the image of a complex and active medieval settlement. The goal of this paper is to study and compare the usage of banknotes and coins in Japan and Sweden during the time period 1980–2015. Using the stakeholder theory, a theory that operationalizes the identification of different actors, stakeholders, and their influences, the development of the banknote and coin usage will be studied. Three different stakeholders are then identified for both countries, the central banks, the banks, and the customers. These stakeholders background and ability to influence are then analyzed. It becomes clear that the customers are the most important stakeholder because they are the stakeholder from which the demand and supply for banknotes and coins arises from. The background in Sweden contra Japan concludes that the japanese customers have less trust in the banks and central banks, which leads them to prefer banknotes and coins over other payment alternatives, while the case in Sweden is the opposite. Therefore, the banknote and coin usage is high in Japan, while it is low in Sweden.

The purpose with this work is to try and see an economic development on Gotland during the Viking Age, where society went from a weight-based economy, to a monetary economy with its own coins. The aim is to try and distinguish a pattern in the investigated depots. How has the deposit structure changed during the Viking era when it comes to the minted and unminted silver? The research about the silver deposits aim on the dating of the coins in order to create an approximate closing period for the contents of the depots. The development of the silver structural change in the silver depots during the Viking Age makes it possible to study how the dominance of the early Islamic coins, in both coin and fragmented form, is phased out to be replaced by mainly English and German coins. The English and German coins that are found on Gotland could be seen as a model for the coins and the minting that began at the end of the Viking Age on the island.
