description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Preprint 2020Publisher:Research Square Platform LLC Authors: Xiaoyan Yang; Juzhi Hou; Feixue San;Xiaoyan Yang; Juzhi Hou; Feixue San;Abstract Continental chemical weathering has been suggested to affect the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide that influences global climate change at different time scales. Various indices for chemical weathering have been adopted to investigate past change in chemical weathering intensity and climate change on oceanic and lacustrine sediment archives. The reliability of the chemical weathering indices has been questioned as most sediments likely originate from multiple types of bedrock that may experience various degrees of chemical weathering and can thus be reliably robust indicators of climate and paleoclimate. Here we present Sr-type (e.g. Rb/Sr Sr/Ba) and Na-type (e.g. CIA CIW PIA CPA) chemical weathering indices for top soils across the southern Tibetan Plateau to discuss the chemical weathering characteristic in the Tibetan Plateau and to examine their response to regional climate variation. The results of chemical indices and the A-CN-K ternary plot show that the southern Tibetan Plateau is under the carbonate control of the primary chemical weathering stage with the cold-dry climate. Correlation analyses show shat Sr-type indices co-vary with mean annual temperature and annual precipitation while Na-type indices show little consistence with regional climate. The climate condition is the dominant control of Sr-type indices of top soils in the study area and the bedrock may be the dominant control for the Na-type indices. We also compared the corresponding indices at a Holocene lacustrine sediment profile in the Qaidam Basin in the northeast Tibetan Plateau with regional climatic records which strongly supports our observation in the top soils. The results of the study suggest that for the relative cold and dry climate in Tibetan Plateau the Sr-type indices are more sensitive to climate condition than Na-type indices. This suggests that the Sr-type indices are likely more suitable than Na-type indices to reflect the change of climate on the Tibetan Plateau. Caution should be taken for using the Na-type indices for reconstructing the past change in climate for the study area.

According to the formation pressure framework, genetic types of petroleum and characteristics of conduit systems, three dynamic systems of petroleum accumulation were identified in the vertical profile in the Nanpu depression, Bohai Bay basin. The deeper DSPA (including formations Es3 to Es2) is a sealed system with high‐overpressure and high‐mature self‐sourced oil. Most of the crude oil in the system accumulated in the periods of late Oligocene (23.5 Ma) and late Pliocene (2.4 Ma). The middle DSPA (including formations Es1 to Ed1) is an overpressured half‐sealed system with mature or lower‐mature self‐sourced oil. The accumulation of oil in the system also occurred in the late Oligocene (23.5 Ma) and late Pliocene (2.4 Ma). The shallower DSPA (including formations Ed2 to Q) is a hydrostatic system with lower‐mature alien‐sourced oil from the middle system. Oil within this system accumulated only in the late Pliocene period. The oil in the shallower system migrated vertically along the faults from the formerly accumulated oil in the middle system by lateral migration along the sandbodies, whereas petroleum accumulation in the deeper system was mainly derived from the system itself by lateral migration along the sandbodies and rarely migrated out of the system. In this case, it seems that the deeper system is a more potential exploration prospect in addition to the other two proved favorable systems.

However, the MODIS LST products are often obscured by clouds and other atmospheric disturbances, resulting in severe data loss. Traditional interpolation methods cannot be effectively applied when there is large area of missing data. Thus, in this study, an effective LST interpolation method is developed to address this issue and is used to interpolate MODIS/Terra LST data on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in 2005. This method assumes that some pixels with spatially valid LSTs may follow a change trend over time similar to the null pixels, and the focus thus becomes to locate those similar pixels to interpolate each null pixel. First, LST images with a small amount of missing data, chosen as the reference images, were interpolated using a traditional interpolation method. Then, for each null pixel, other pixels with similar temporal changes of LST were identified by a similarity function. Finally, a transfer function for each null pixel was established based on those pixels most similar to it in the interpolated image and the corresponding reference image. The results were found to be much superior to those interpolated by traditional methods, such as regression Kriging, ordinary Kriging, and IDW. A specially designed experiment on an area that had ample valid LSTs confirmed that the proposed method can produce more favorable results than the other methods, and performed especially well when there was a significant lack of data.

El-Etr;Abstract Sand dunes and interdune sediments around Al Ain city have markedly high carbonate contents which increase towards Jabal Hafit mountain and the Arabian Gulf coast. The dunes are composed predominantly of well-sorted fine sands, consisting of unstrained quartz and carbonate grains together with minor proportions of chert and feldspars. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination reveals that quartz grains display various mechanically- and chemically-formed surface textures. The heavy minerals are dominated by opaques and pyroxenes with minor tourmaline, garnet, rutile, epidote, monazite, zircon, hornblende and staurolite. Interdune sediments consist of fine and very fine, poorly- to extremely poorly-sorted sands together with small concentrations of gravel, silt and clay. The light sand fractions compositionally resemble those of dunes but contain, in addition, gypsum, anhydrite, halite and celestite. Percentages of pyroxenes are higher whereas those of zircon, tourmaline and rutile are lower than in dunes. X-ray diffractometry reveals that the clay fractions consist solely of palygorskite. Generally, interdune sediments are much less mature texturally and mineralogically than dune sands; the maturity of both types of sediments decreases toward the NE of the study area. Sand dunes in the various districts of the greater Al Ain area are genetically related. Also, there is a partial genetic relationship between the dunes and interdune sediments; both are mainly multicyclic. Their major parts were brought mainly by the dominant north-west (El Shamal) winds from older dune fields in other localities in U.A.E., Qatar and El-Rub El-Khali. Local contributions to the dune fields from Jabal Hafit mountain, the Oman Mountains and the calcareous coast of the Arabian Gulf were, in cases, significant. Also, authigenesis by groundwater under highly evaporitic conditions played a major role in the formation of interdune sediments through the genesis of the clay and some nonclay minerals.

Retene and methylretene have been identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of Silurian carbonate extracts of the Michigan Basin. Retene identified in pre-Devonian carbonates indicates that the compound not only is the biomarker of higher plants but also derived from alga or bacterium. The geochemical significance of methylretene has been discussed.

To determine metallogenic material source, the geological characteristics and genesis of the Yulu deposit of NE Yunnan are summarized according to lithofacies paleogeograph, the ore deposit, and isotope geochemical characteristics. From the result, this ore deposit is formed by the eruption deposit of marine volcanism and the later reformation. The gas–liquid for later alteration may be related to large area Emeishan basaltic magma eruption.

AbstractWe presented a new local particle filter named the localized weighted ensemble Kalman filter (LWEnKF), which was tested and verified using a simple high‐dimensional Lorenz 96 model. A revised LWEnKF, the proposal weights calculation of which is modified through localization to prevent filter degeneracy for real geophysical models, is explored further in this article and shows lots of potential in the implementation of real complex models. For geophysical models, the ocean dynamics changes slowly compared with that of the atmosphere. With a relatively low resolution, it is weakly nonlinear in the surface layers of the ocean model used in this article, which fits the linear and Gaussian assumptions of the EnKF but could be a challenge for particle filters in the data assimilation process. With only 50 particles, the LWEnKF assimilates the sea‐surface temperature (SST), sea‐surface height (SSH), temperature, and salinity profiles with affordable computational cost, providing a reasonable forecast. Moreover, the LWEnKF is compared with the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and the local particle filter (PF). For observed variables, the LWEnKF performs comparably to the EnKF, as the observation operator is linear. For unobserved variables, the LWEnKF provides more accurate forecasts than the EnKF, since the latter considers only the correlations, while the former considers higher‐order moments. The local PF ensemble does not converge to the observed solution in an ample amount of time in this study, which needs further investigation.

Various indices for chemical weathering have been adopted to investigate past change in chemical weathering intensity and climate change on oceanic and lacustrine sediment archives. The reliability of the chemical weathering indices has been questioned as most sediments likely originate from multiple types of bedrock that may experience various degrees of chemical weathering and can thus be reliably robust indicators of climate and paleoclimate. Here we present Sr-type (e.g. Rb/Sr Sr/Ba) and Na-type (e.g. CIA CIW PIA CPA) chemical weathering indices for top soils across the southern Tibetan Plateau to discuss the chemical weathering characteristic in the Tibetan Plateau and to examine their response to regional climate variation. The results of chemical indices and the A-CN-K ternary plot show that the southern Tibetan Plateau is under the carbonate control of the primary chemical weathering stage with the cold-dry climate. Correlation analyses show shat Sr-type indices co-vary with mean annual temperature and annual precipitation while Na-type indices show little consistence with regional climate. The climate condition is the dominant control of Sr-type indices of top soils in the study area and the bedrock may be the dominant control for the Na-type indices. We also compared the corresponding indices at a Holocene lacustrine sediment profile in the Qaidam Basin in the northeast Tibetan Plateau with regional climatic records which strongly supports our observation in the top soils. The results of the study suggest that for the relative cold and dry climate in Tibetan Plateau the Sr-type indices are more sensitive to climate condition than Na-type indices. This suggests that the Sr-type indices are likely more suitable than Na-type indices to reflect the change of climate on the Tibetan Plateau. Caution should be taken for using the Na-type indices for reconstructing the past change in climate for the study area.

According to the formation pressure framework, genetic types of petroleum and characteristics of conduit systems, three dynamic systems of petroleum accumulation were identified in the vertical profile in the Nanpu depression, Bohai Bay basin. The deeper DSPA (including formations Es3 to Es2) is a sealed system with high‐overpressure and high‐mature self‐sourced oil. Most of the crude oil in the system accumulated in the periods of late Oligocene (23.5 Ma) and late Pliocene (2.4 Ma). The middle DSPA (including formations Es1 to Ed1) is an overpressured half‐sealed system with mature or lower‐mature self‐sourced oil. The accumulation of oil in the system also occurred in the late Oligocene (23.5 Ma) and late Pliocene (2.4 Ma). The shallower DSPA (including formations Ed2 to Q) is a hydrostatic system with lower‐mature alien‐sourced oil from the middle system. Oil within this system accumulated only in the late Pliocene period. The oil in the shallower system migrated vertically along the faults from the formerly accumulated oil in the middle system by lateral migration along the sandbodies, whereas petroleum accumulation in the deeper system was mainly derived from the system itself by lateral migration along the sandbodies and rarely migrated out of the system. In this case, it seems that the deeper system is a more potential exploration prospect in addition to the other two proved favorable systems.

However, the MODIS LST products are often obscured by clouds and other atmospheric disturbances, resulting in severe data loss. Traditional interpolation methods cannot be effectively applied when there is large area of missing data. Thus, in this study, an effective LST interpolation method is developed to address this issue and is used to interpolate MODIS/Terra LST data on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in 2005. This method assumes that some pixels with spatially valid LSTs may follow a change trend over time similar to the null pixels, and the focus thus becomes to locate those similar pixels to interpolate each null pixel. First, LST images with a small amount of missing data, chosen as the reference images, were interpolated using a traditional interpolation method. Then, for each null pixel, other pixels with similar temporal changes of LST were identified by a similarity function. Finally, a transfer function for each null pixel was established based on those pixels most similar to it in the interpolated image and the corresponding reference image. The results were found to be much superior to those interpolated by traditional methods, such as regression Kriging, ordinary Kriging, and IDW. A specially designed experiment on an area that had ample valid LSTs confirmed that the proposed method can produce more favorable results than the other methods, and performed especially well when there was a significant lack of data.

El-Etr;Abstract Sand dunes and interdune sediments around Al Ain city have markedly high carbonate contents which increase towards Jabal Hafit mountain and the Arabian Gulf coast. The dunes are composed predominantly of well-sorted fine sands, consisting of unstrained quartz and carbonate grains together with minor proportions of chert and feldspars. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination reveals that quartz grains display various mechanically- and chemically-formed surface textures. The heavy minerals are dominated by opaques and pyroxenes with minor tourmaline, garnet, rutile, epidote, monazite, zircon, hornblende and staurolite. Interdune sediments consist of fine and very fine, poorly- to extremely poorly-sorted sands together with small concentrations of gravel, silt and clay. The light sand fractions compositionally resemble those of dunes but contain, in addition, gypsum, anhydrite, halite and celestite. Percentages of pyroxenes are higher whereas those of zircon, tourmaline and rutile are lower than in dunes. X-ray diffractometry reveals that the clay fractions consist solely of palygorskite. Generally, interdune sediments are much less mature texturally and mineralogically than dune sands; the maturity of both types of sediments decreases toward the NE of the study area. Sand dunes in the various districts of the greater Al Ain area are genetically related. Also, there is a partial genetic relationship between the dunes and interdune sediments; both are mainly multicyclic. Their major parts were brought mainly by the dominant north-west (El Shamal) winds from older dune fields in other localities in U.A.E., Qatar and El-Rub El-Khali. Local contributions to the dune fields from Jabal Hafit mountain, the Oman Mountains and the calcareous coast of the Arabian Gulf were, in cases, significant. Also, authigenesis by groundwater under highly evaporitic conditions played a major role in the formation of interdune sediments through the genesis of the clay and some nonclay minerals.

Retene and methylretene have been identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of Silurian carbonate extracts of the Michigan Basin. Retene identified in pre-Devonian carbonates indicates that the compound not only is the biomarker of higher plants but also derived from alga or bacterium. The geochemical significance of methylretene has been discussed.

From the result, this ore deposit is formed by the eruption deposit of marine volcanism and the later reformation. The gas–liquid for later alteration may be related to large area Emeishan basaltic magma eruption.

AbstractWe presented a new local particle filter named the localized weighted ensemble Kalman filter (LWEnKF), which was tested and verified using a simple high‐dimensional Lorenz 96 model. A revised LWEnKF, the proposal weights calculation of which is modified through localization to prevent filter degeneracy for real geophysical models, is explored further in this article and shows lots of potential in the implementation of real complex models. For geophysical models, the ocean dynamics changes slowly compared with that of the atmosphere. With a relatively low resolution, it is weakly nonlinear in the surface layers of the ocean model used in this article, which fits the linear and Gaussian assumptions of the EnKF but could be a challenge for particle filters in the data assimilation process. With only 50 particles, the LWEnKF assimilates the sea‐surface temperature (SST), sea‐surface height (SSH), temperature, and salinity profiles with affordable computational cost, providing a reasonable forecast. Moreover, the LWEnKF is compared with the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and the local particle filter (PF). For observed variables, the LWEnKF performs comparably to the EnKF, as the observation operator is linear. For unobserved variables, the LWEnKF provides more accurate forecasts than the EnKF, since the latter considers only the correlations, while the former considers higher‐order moments. The local PF ensemble does not converge to the observed solution in an ample amount of time in this study, which needs further investigation.
