    Authors: Ramirez, Jorge Omar;

    This dissertation, examines how rhizomatic cultural production in late twentieth-century Tijuana-San Diego responded to processes of deterritorialization from the two nations that struggled to consolidate their shared border. It investigates how the region’s Mexican, Mexican-American and Chicano writers and artists from the 1950s to the 1990s constructed their aesthetic projects and social subjectivities by engaging multidirectional nationalistic forces from both sides of the border. Specifically, this community spread aesthetic and discursive rhizomes in a line of flight from a post-revolutionary centralist Mexico and across a settler-colonialist United States that had increasingly criminalized immigration. In the process, these artists and writers engaged countercultural movements; so doing, I conclude, they nurtured the artistic and political ties required to resist state violence at and across the U.S.-Mexico border. My chapters focus on art and literature produced by these artists, but also concerns the politics that shaped the region’s culture-producing landscapes and institutions. The first chapter traces a move away from early twentieth century perception of the borderlands as dominated by cultural emptiness. As the chapter shows, Fernando Jordán’s El otro México; biografía de la Baja California (1951) counters this belief as he shapes an early approach of Baja California as an alter-nation. The second chapter probes the region’s emergency poetics from the first know poetic text produced in and about California in 1740s to the early 1980s. The third chapter analyzes visual art production from the 1950s to the 90s as a fronterhizomatic art practice particular to the border shaped by institutional processes of modernization. The forth chapter restages the vertiginous theoretical shift in the 1990’s from postmodernism to necropolitics. Ultimately, this project represents an alternative history of the Tijuana-San Diego border region. It attends to nationalist arborescent politics at both sides of the border but digs deeper to confirm the artistic rhizomes that continue to flourish across the divided land.

    Authors: Ortiz, Manuel;

    Los anfípodos constituyen uno de los grupos de crustáceos peracáridos más importantes, tanto a nivel mundial como en Cuba. Se presentan los resultados de los estudios realizados sobre la taxonomía de los anfípodos cubanos. En la actualidad se registran cerca de 200 especies marinas, dulciacuícolas y troglobias. El archipiélago cubano, puede ser considerado como la zona del trópico americano donde el grupo resulta mejor conocido. También, donde se cuenta con un número mayor de especies nuevas descritas. Los anfípodos hipéridos (Suborden Hyperiidea), en particular, han permanecido muy poco estudiados en el país. Los bentónicos (Subórdenes Colomastigidea, Senticaudata y Amphilochidea) han sido el principal objeto de atención hasta el presente. Se presenta una breve historia, la morfología general de estos crustáceos, así como las claves y las 208 figuras originales para la clasificación de 197 especies distribuídas en 14 familias, 23 géneros y 35 especies de hipéridos; una familia, un género y siete especies de colomastígidos; 27 familias, 27 géneros y 98 especies de senticaudados y 19 familias, 30 géneros y 56 especies de anfiloquídeos. Lo anterior, hace un total de 61 familias, 81 géneros y 197 especies. Además, se registra por primera vez Dulichiella terminos, para Cuba. Finalmente, se adjunta, una tabla con las especies citadas hasta que comenzaron los estudios, en 1976, así como un glosario de términos. Amphipods constitute one of the most important groups of peracarid crustaceans, both globally and in our country. The results of the studies carried out, since the beginning of our taxonomic investigations, of these interesting and abundant peracarid crustaceans are presented. Currently, slightly less than 200 marines, freshwater and troglobian species are registered. The Cuban archipelago can be considered as the area of the American tropics where the group is best known. Also, where there is a greater number of new species described. The hyperiid (Suborder Hyperiidea), in particular, have remained very little studied in the country. The benthic ones (Suborders Colomastigidea, Senticaudata and Amphilochidea), have been the main object of attention, until the present. A brief history, the general morphology, as well as the keys and the 208 original figures, for the classification of 197 species, distributed in 14 families, 23 genera and 35 Hyperiid species; a family, a genus and seven species of Colomastigids; 27 families, 27 genera and 98 species of Senticaudads, and 19 families, 30 genera and 56 species of Ampilochids, are presented. So a total of 61 families, 81 genera and 197 species are pointed out. In addition, Dulichiella terminos, is registered for the first time in Cuba. Finally, a table with the species cited until this studies began, in 1976, as well as a glossary of terms are offered. Published Refereed

    Authors: Giraldo-Hoyos, Nicolás;

    RESUMEN El hecho científico conocido como “penicilina” se ha considerado tradicionalmente como el producto del ingenio de Alexander Fleming, ganador del Premio Nobel por descubrir esta “droga milagrosa”. Apartándose de esta idea popular, se hace necesario resaltar el desarrollo de la penicilina como un constructo social, producto del trabajo invaluable de varios científicos, sumado a un contexto social excepcional que motivó la voluntad política y el apoyo de la industria farmacéutica; en ausencia de cualquiera de estos, la penicilina no sería lo que significa hoy para nosotros o, simplemente, no existiría en el arsenal terapéutico. Los conceptos epistemológicos de “estilo de pensamiento” y “colectivo de pensamiento” como fundamentos en la construcción del conocimiento, presentes en la obra epistemológica de Ludwick Fleck, apoyan la conclusión, a partir del recuento histórico, de la necesidad de apartarnos de la penicilina como el producto de un descubrimiento de un único héroe, para verla como una construcción social, que además es un ejemplo clásico de serendipia. La penicilina, además, tiene otras facetas menos conocidas históricamente como el uso de ella de manera cruda, producida y usada por médicos generales, o la búsqueda de información para su producción durante la segunda guerra mundial; estas se abordan en este breve recuento histórico. SUMMARY The scientific breakthroug we know as “penicillin”, has been traditionally considered as the result of the genius of Alexander Fleming, awarded with the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the “miracle drug”. Standing aside from this popular idea, it is important to highlight the development of penicillin as a social construct and the product of the invaluable work of several scientists, in addition to an exceptional social framework that raised the political desire and the pharmaceutical industry support; without any of these, penicillin wouldn’t even have the meaning it has today, or it wouldn’t even exist. The epistemological concepts of “style of thinking” and “collectivity of thought” as basis in the construction of knowledge, present in Ludwick Fleck’s epistemological work, support the conclusion, based the historical account, about the need of standing aside from the idea of penicillin as the discovery of a single hero, and considering it a social construction instead, and a classical example of serendipity. Other aspects less known about penicillin history, such as the use of crude penicillin by general practitioners, or the seeking of information about how to produce it during World War II, which are addressed in this brief historical account.

    Authors: García, Luis F.;

    RESUMEN Mundialmente la inmunología es una de las ciencias biomédicas con mayor desarrollo en la segunda parte del siglo xx y principios del siglo xxi, además ha tenido un desarrollo muy importante en Antioquia a partir de los años sesenta del siglo xx. En la presente reseña histórica, el autor, quien ha participado activamente durante cincuenta años como estudiante y profesor de inmunología en la Universidad de Antioquia, relata los momentos más significativos y el papel que han desempeñado algunos distinguidos profesores en el desarrollo de la investigación y la docencia de pregrado y posgrado en esta disciplina. En esta primera parte se relatan los antecedentes y los eventos que en las décadas de 1960 y 1970 permitieron establecer la inmunología como una disciplina biomédica independiente en la Universidad de Antioquia. SUMMARY Immunology is one of the biomedical sciences that had undergo, worldwide, a greater development in the last part of the XX century and the beginning of the XXI century. In Antioquia, immunology also had important developments that began the 1960s. In this historical review, the author who have actively participated in these developments in the Universidad de Antioquia, as an undergraduate and graduate student and later on as faculty member, describes the more significant local events and the role played by some distinguished faculty members in research, and in undergraduate and graduate teaching of immunology. The first part describes the historical events that occurred in the 1960 and 1970 decades that lead to the establishment of immunology as an independent biomedical.

    Authors: Ehrlich, M.D.;

    Con motivo de la renovación de la flota del Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), surgió inmediatamente qué nombre se pondría al nuevo barco que se estaba construyendo en el Astillero Armón de Vigo, España, desde marzo de 2016. El nombre a un barco es como darle un nombre al hijo, donde los padres procuran homenajearlo con una designación significativa. En general los nombres de buques científicos se refieren a lugares geográficos, nombres en latín de organismos marinos interesantes y el nombre de algún investigador relacionado con las ciencias marinas a quien se desea recordar. En septiembre de 2016 la Dirección del INIDEP convocó a todo el personal para que propusieran posibles nombres para el nuevo barco. Posteriormente se hizo una votación sobre la lista presentada y resultó elegido el nombre "Víctor Angelescu". Las siguientes líneas se proponen mostrar quien fue el Dr. Víctor Angelescu a través de su actuación, sus trabajos, su personalidad y la opinión de quienes tuvimos el placer de conocerlo personalmente.     Authors: Ramirez, Jorge Omar;

    Authors: Ortiz, Manuel;

    Authors: Giraldo-Hoyos, Nicolás;

    Con motivo de la renovación de la flota del Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP), surgió inmediatamente qué nombre se pondría al nuevo barco que se estaba construyendo en el Astillero Armón de Vigo, España, desde marzo de 2016. El nombre a un barco es como darle un nombre al hijo, donde los padres procuran homenajearlo con una designación significativa. En general los nombres de buques científicos se refieren a lugares geográficos, nombres en latín de organismos marinos interesantes y el nombre de algún investigador relacionado con las ciencias marinas a quien se desea recordar. En septiembre de 2016 la Dirección del INIDEP convocó a todo el personal para que propusieran posibles nombres para el nuevo barco. Posteriormente se hizo una votación sobre la lista presentada y resultó elegido el nombre "Víctor Angelescu". Las siguientes líneas se proponen mostrar quien fue el Dr. Víctor Angelescu a través de su actuación, sus trabajos, su personalidad y la opinión de quienes tuvimos el placer de conocerlo personalmente.
