    The subject “Science and Technology in the First World War” has so far been treated from the perspective on inventions and the development of new weapons, and often the focus has been on the topic of chemical warfare at the expense of other important dimensions. The approach of this Archival Research Guide, by contrast, comes from the social sciences and focuses on the establishment of relevant scientific, military and governmental bodies and on the personal networks established during the war. By examining these institutions and networks country by country, comparisons between them can be drawn, enabling further research with regard to the sociology of institutions. By pointing to the connections and channels of exchange between the nations and institutions under consideration, this approach opens up a transnational perspective and supports the paradoxal insight that transnational ties can dissolve national obstacles while simultaneously strengthening the nation-states themselves. On the individual level, the ARG takes the role of intellectuals into account, for whom scientific objectivity / neutrality and patriotic commitment seemed to have been no contradiction. It is remarkable that the First World War led to the establishment of several institutions aiming at funding science through the state, most notably in the case of France (CNRS), the U.S. (NACA/NASA) and Russia (KEPS).     The aim of the presentation is to discuss the ongoing study of the polychromy on marble sculptures from the villa of Chiragan (Martres-Tolosane, France), exposed at the Saint-Raymond Museum in Toulouse. This exceptional collection, dating from the long period of occupation of the villa (1st - 4th century), is composed by sixty portraits, mainly in oriental marble, as well as by a group of mythological sculptures and architectural decorations in local marble (Saint-Béat), including ornamental elements and masks. Pilasters, clipei and masks – some bacchic, others from theatrical repertoire – will be, here, examined. Following an analytical protocol, coupling visual observation through white light, UVL and IR, optical videomicroscopy and MA-XRF analysis, we confirm the presence of the pictorial finishing and the compositional nature of the preserved colours. In order to better understand and interpret the results of the physico-chemical analyses, and to sketch some elements of restitution, the analysed objects are systematically compared to the same objects represented in other coloured supports (wall paintings, mosaics or even the real materials in which the represented elements were made). The results of this work in progress may provide a better understanding of the initial appearance of certain works and, from a museographic point of view, a renewed reflection on the presentation of these works in the Musée Saint-Raymond in Toulouse and their visual impact.

    Construction processes require monitoring to ensure safety and to control the new and existing structures. Traditional monitoring is based on land surveys and geotechnical instruments and only allows for point-like measurements. Ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) is a remote sensing radar installed in the ground that offers the possibility of acquiring measurements in 2D covering areas of up to a few square kilometers in a single acquisition. Because the GB-SAR technology measures phase shifts along the Line-of-Sight, it only allows for measurements in the longitudinal direction. Moreover, this technology requires coherence between subsequent acquisitions. These restrictions can be a limitation to the usage of GB-SAR for monitoring a construction process because in this context, the movements of soil and existing structures occur in any direction and at a very fast pace. This paper aims to test the GB-SAR suitability to measure movements during construction. To do so, an experiment was performed in the future railway station of La Sagrera, Barcelona (Spain), in which GB-SAR was used to accurately quantify wall displacements induced by dewatering and proved to be helpful to understand structural deformations and to identify vulnerable areas. The results were compared to traditional monitoring data and numerical models to confirm the reliability of the GB-SAR measurements.

    In "Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis" Valentino Gasparini and Richard Veymiers present a collection of reflections on the individuals and groups which animated one of Antiquity’s most dynamic, significant and popular religious phenomena: the reception of the cults of Isis and other Egyptian gods throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. These communities, whose members seem to share the same religious identity, for a long time have been studied in a monolithic way through the prism of the Cumontian category of the “Oriental religions”. The 26 contributions of this book, divided into three sections devoted to the “agents”, their “images” and their “practices”, shed new light on this religious movement that appears much more heterogeneous and colorful than previously recognized.     Digitally acquired 3D models of cultural assets are not always ready for further processing. Sometimes, the digital surface presents geometric or topological defects that may hinder downstream surface analysis algorithms. Furthermore, the high resolution meshes provided by acquisition might pose complexity issues to the processing afterwards. Preprocessing models can be a tedious and sometimes manual work. We present the processing needs for a set of cultural artifacts in the framework of the GRAVITATE project and describe a fully automatic procedure to fix and adaptively simplify 3D models of cultural interest.

    Abstract Blind tests provide an objective means to evaluate the accuracy of functional interpretations based on the presence of use-wear and residue traces on stone tools. Previous blind tests have highlighted interpretive errors commonly associated with use-wear and residue analyses leading to significant methodological developments in each of the respective fields. While a number of blind tests have been performed on flaked stone tools, only a single blind test has been published for use-wear on grinding tools. We present the results of a two-part blind test performed on 15 experimental grinding implements that were used in a controlled setting, designed to evaluate the relative importance of residue analysis for determining the worked material (1) when contextual information is available and (2) when contextual information is absent. We argue that use-wear and residue analyses are successful procedures to identify the use of grinding stones, and that residue analysis may be a particularly valuable means for determining the worked material on tools that have insufficient use-wear development. We suggest that residues should be sufficiently abundant to infer use, if we are to avoid the potential confusion caused by contamination. Evohaft

    Trained models for UDPipe used to produce our final submission to the Vardial 2017 CLP shared task (https://bitbucket.org/hy-crossNLP/vardial2017). The SK model was trained on CS data, the HR model on SL data, and the SV model on a concatenation of DA and NO data. The scripts and commands used to create the models are part of separate submission (http://hdl.handle.net/11234/1-1970). The models were trained with UDPipe version 3e65d69 from 3rd Jan 2017, obtained from https://github.com/ufal/udpipe -- their functionality with newer or older versions of UDPipe is not guaranteed. We list here the Bash command sequences that can be used to reproduce our results submitted to VarDial 2017. The input files must be in CoNLLU format. The models only use the form, UPOS, and Universal Features fields (SK only uses the form). You must have UDPipe installed. The feats2FEAT.py script, which prunes the universal features, is bundled with this submission.     The aim of the presentation is to discuss the ongoing study of the polychromy on marble sculptures from the villa of Chiragan (Martres-Tolosane, France), exposed at the Saint-Raymond Museum in Toulouse. This exceptional collection, dating from the long period of occupation of the villa (1st - 4th century), is composed by sixty portraits, mainly in oriental marble, as well as by a group of mythological sculptures and architectural decorations in local marble (Saint-Béat), including ornamental elements and masks. Pilasters, clipei and masks – some bacchic, others from theatrical repertoire – will be, here, examined. Following an analytical protocol, coupling visual observation through white light, UVL and IR, optical videomicroscopy and MA-XRF analysis, we confirm the presence of the pictorial finishing and the compositional nature of the preserved colours. In order to better understand and interpret the results of the physico-chemical analyses, and to sketch some elements of restitution, the analysed objects are systematically compared to the same objects represented in other coloured supports (wall paintings, mosaics or even the real materials in which the represented elements were made). The results of this work in progress may provide a better understanding of the initial appearance of certain works and, from a museographic point of view, a renewed reflection on the presentation of these works in the Musée Saint-Raymond in Toulouse and their visual impact.

    Construction processes require monitoring to ensure safety and to control the new and existing structures. Traditional monitoring is based on land surveys and geotechnical instruments and only allows for point-like measurements. Ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) is a remote sensing radar installed in the ground that offers the possibility of acquiring measurements in 2D covering areas of up to a few square kilometers in a single acquisition. Because the GB-SAR technology measures phase shifts along the Line-of-Sight, it only allows for measurements in the longitudinal direction. Moreover, this technology requires coherence between subsequent acquisitions. These restrictions can be a limitation to the usage of GB-SAR for monitoring a construction process because in this context, the movements of soil and existing structures occur in any direction and at a very fast pace. This paper aims to test the GB-SAR suitability to measure movements during construction. To do so, an experiment was performed in the future railway station of La Sagrera, Barcelona (Spain), in which GB-SAR was used to accurately quantify wall displacements induced by dewatering and proved to be helpful to understand structural deformations and to identify vulnerable areas. The results were compared to traditional monitoring data and numerical models to confirm the reliability of the GB-SAR measurements.

    In "Individuals and Materials in the Greco-Roman Cults of Isis" Valentino Gasparini and Richard Veymiers present a collection of reflections on the individuals and groups which animated one of Antiquity’s most dynamic, significant and popular religious phenomena: the reception of the cults of Isis and other Egyptian gods throughout the Hellenistic and Roman worlds. These communities, whose members seem to share the same religious identity, for a long time have been studied in a monolithic way through the prism of the Cumontian category of the “Oriental religions”.     Digitally acquired 3D models of cultural assets are not always ready for further processing. Sometimes, the digital surface presents geometric or topological defects that may hinder downstream surface analysis algorithms. Furthermore, the high resolution meshes provided by acquisition might pose complexity issues to the processing afterwards. Preprocessing models can be a tedious and sometimes manual work. We present the processing needs for a set of cultural artifacts in the framework of the GRAVITATE project and describe a fully automatic procedure to fix and adaptively simplify 3D models of cultural interest.

    Abstract Blind tests provide an objective means to evaluate the accuracy of functional interpretations based on the presence of use-wear and residue traces on stone tools. Previous blind tests have highlighted interpretive errors commonly associated with use-wear and residue analyses leading to significant methodological developments in each of the respective fields. While a number of blind tests have been performed on flaked stone tools, only a single blind test has been published for use-wear on grinding tools. We present the results of a two-part blind test performed on 15 experimental grinding implements that were used in a controlled setting, designed to evaluate the relative importance of residue analysis for determining the worked material (1) when contextual information is available and (2) when contextual information is absent. We argue that use-wear and residue analyses are successful procedures to identify the use of grinding stones, and that residue analysis may be a particularly valuable means for determining the worked material on tools that have insufficient use-wear development. We suggest that residues should be sufficiently abundant to infer use, if we are to avoid the potential confusion caused by contamination. Evohaft

    Trained models for UDPipe used to produce our final submission to the Vardial 2017 CLP shared task (https://bitbucket.org/hy-crossNLP/vardial2017). The SK model was trained on CS data, the HR model on SL data, and the SV model on a concatenation of DA and NO data. The scripts and commands used to create the models are part of separate submission (http://hdl.handle.net/11234/1-1970). The models were trained with UDPipe version 3e65d69 from 3rd Jan 2017, obtained from https://github.com/ufal/udpipe -- their functionality with newer or older versions of UDPipe is not guaranteed. We list here the Bash command sequences that can be used to reproduce our results submitted to VarDial 2017. The input files must be in CoNLLU format. The models only use the form, UPOS, and Universal Features fields (SK only uses the form). You must have UDPipe installed. The feats2FEAT.py script, which prunes the universal features, is bundled with this submission.
