Aineistossa vastaajat kertovat omasta arjestaan ja kokemuksistaan lemmikkien kanssa niin lapsuudessa kuin nykyhetkessä. Suurin osa muistoista koskee kissoja ja koiria, mutta monella on ollut myös muita eläimiä lemmikkinä, esimerkiksi kaloja, kaneja, hamstereita, lintuja ja kilpikonnia. Kirjoittajat ovat kertoneet muisteluissaan esimerkiksi lemmikin roolista perheessä, vuorovaikutuksesta eläimen kanssa, ja minkälaisia tavaroita ja ruokia lemmikille on hankittu. Vastaajat ovat myös kertoneet tarinoita tilanteista, joissa lemmikistä on joutunut eroon tai kun lemmikki on täytynyt lopettaa, sekä näihin tilanteisiin liittyvistä tunteista. Monet ovat muistelleet lapsuudenkodin eläimiä ja arvioineet, miten suhtautuminen kotieläimiin on muuttunut vuosikymmenten aikana. Toiset ovat kirjoittaneet lemmikeistä koko oman elämäntarinansa kautta, toiset taas vain yksittäisen mieleen painuneen muiston. Aineisto sisältää 72 kirjoitusta. Osa vastaajista on lähettänyt muistelunsa mukana myös valokuvia lemmikeistään. Keruun järjesti Suomen Akatemian tutkimushanke Eläintentoimijuus yhteiskunnassa: näkökulmia Suomesta 1890 – 2040, Itä-Suomen yliopiston Ihmistieteellisen eläintutkimuksen tutkimusryhmä, kirjailija Reetta Niemelä ja Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. Vastaajien taustatietoja ovat ikä, sukupuoli, ammatti ja asuinpaikka. Aineistosta on tehty jatkokäyttäjälle html-versio, jonka hakemiston avulla kirjoituksia on helppo selata. This dataset contains written responses about Finnish people's experiences with pets in childhood and in the present. Most of the memories concern cats and dogs, but stories about other pets are included as well. The respondents wrote about the role of the pet in the family and interaction with the pet, for instance. They also wrote about having to give up the pet or put it down as well as emotions relating to these situations. Many respondents reminisced pets in childhood homes and how their attitudes towards pets had changed over decades. The dataset comprises 72 responses. Some respondents also attached pictures of their pets. The data collection was organised by the Academy of Finland's research project "Animal Agency in Human Society: Finnish Perspectives, 1890 - 2040", Human-Animal Studies network at the University of Eastern Finland, author Reetta Niemelä, and Finnish Literature Society. Background information includes age, gender, occupation and place of residence. The data were organised into an easy to use html version at FSD. The dataset is only available in Finnish. This special issue of the journal Photography & Culture (volume 14, issue 3) calls for the development of research into the various local and global political circumstances that have influenced the absorption of historical photographs into the realm of digital heritage, alongside the study of the digital photographic heritagization practices triggered by this very process. Presenting case studies from Australia, Britain, Israel, Palestine, Russia and South Africa, it analyses how historical photographs, digital heritage, and cultural conflicts have become interlocked in multiple countries around the globe since the post-Cold War rising prevalence of digital technology, global interconnectedness, and liberal democracy. These related conditions, it is suggested, have informed the growing digital heritagization of historical photographs and the methods used for their digitization, safeguarding and dissemination. Therefore, as a whole, the special issue argues that the confluence of historical photographs and digital heritage must not be understood as a mere response to technological progress but as an articulation of politically-charged aspirations to capitalize on the common association of photographs with the past, to administer approaches to differing cultural values in a time of imposing liberal-democratic politics of consensus.
