Purpose The purpose of the current study was to determine the effect of neighborhood density and syntactic class on word recognition in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and typical development (TD). Method Fifteen children with SLI ( M age = 6;5 [years;months]) and 15 with TD ( M age = 6;4) completed a forward gating task that presented consonant–vowel–consonant dense and sparse (neighborhood density) nouns and verbs (syntactic class). Results On all dependent variables, the SLI group performed like the TD group. Recognition performance was highest for dense words and nouns. The majority of 1st nontarget responses shared the 1st phoneme with the target (i.e., was in the target's cohort). When considering the ranking of word types from easiest to most difficult, children showed equivalent recognition performance for dense verbs and sparse nouns, which were both easier to recognize than sparse verbs but more difficult than dense nouns. Conclusion The current study yields new insight into how children access lexical–phonological information and syntactic class during the process of spoken word recognition. Given the identical pattern of results for the SLI and TD groups, we hypothesize that accessing lexical–phonological information may be a strength for children with SLI. We also discuss implications for using the forward gating paradigm as a measure of word recognition.

Acceptability judgments have been an important tool in language research. By asking a native speaker whether a linguistic token is acceptable, linguists and psycholinguists can collect negative evidence and directly test predictions by linguistic and psycholinguistic theories, which provide important insight into the human language capacity. In this paper, we first give a brief overview of this method including: (1) the linking hypothesis for this method, (2) the controversy about the test, and (3) limitations of the current analysis of the results. Then, we propose a new way of analyzing the data: Signal Detection Theory. Signal Detection Theory has been used in many other psychological research areas such as recognition memory and clinical assessments. In this paper, using two examples, we show how Signal Detection Theory can be applied to judgment data. The benefits of this approach are that it can: (1) show how well participants can differentiate the acceptable sentences from unacceptable ones and (2) describe the participant’s bias in the judgment. We conclude with a discussion of remaining questions and future directions.

Successful language acquisition hinges on organizing individual words into grammatical categories and learning the relationships between them, but the method by which children accomplish this task has been debated in the literature. One proposal is that learners use the shared distributional contexts in which words appear as a cue to their underlying category structure. Indeed, recent research using artificial languages has demonstrated that learners can acquire grammatical categories from this type of distributional information. However, artificial languages are typically composed of a small number of equally frequent words, while words in natural languages vary widely in frequency, complicating the distributional information needed to determine categorization. In a series of three experiments we demonstrate that distributional learning is preserved in an artificial language composed of words that vary in frequency as they do in natural language, along a Zipfian distribution. Rather than depending on the absolute frequency of words and their contexts, the conditional probabilities that words will occur in certain contexts (given their base frequency) is a better basis for assigning words to categories; and this appears to be the type of statistic that human learners utilize.

This essay discusses the three most recent posthumous publications of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. With the 2019 release of Classification Struggles, coming after On the State (2014) and Manet (2017), and covering Bourdieu’s first lectures as the Chair in Sociology at the Collège de France from 1981 to 1982, this emerging oral tradition marks an opportune moment to re-examine Bourdieu’s oeuvre in light of a mode of presentation and knowledge transference that is unprecedented in scope within the sociological canon. Taken together, these series of lectures, but also notes, essays by his collaborators, and even an unfinished book length manuscript, constitute a fascinating process of analysis of the wide range of topics that Bourdieu tackled throughout his career. As such, these works lend important insights that should aid readers in re-evaluating Bourdieu’s more polished works. However, beyond the additional insights that may lead international sociologists to a more thorough understanding of Bourdieu’s best-known theories, one finds, when examined chronologically, the slow march of Bourdieu’s progress towards a fully-fledged theory of the state, a topic that he did not begin to formally analyze until he began lecturing at the Collège de France.

We focus on two aspects of embodied cognition understood in its strong sense: explicit motoric processes related to performance, and neuronal processes rooted in bodily and action processes, and describe their role in imagining. The paper argues that these two aspects of strongly embodied cognition can play distinctive and positive roles in constraining imagining, thereby complementing Amy Kind's argument for the epistemic relevance of imagination "under constraints" and Magdalena Balcerak Jackson's argument for justification by imagination.

The paleoclimate and ecosystem variability in Africa during the Plio/Pleistocene has received considerable attention due to its potential links to hominid evolution. However, the reconstruction of this variability hinges critically upon highly temporally resolved proxy data from continuous, well-dated sediment archives. In light of these requirements we use a new XRF core-scanning record from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1478 off the Limpopo River mouth (Mozambique Channel, SW Indian Ocean) spanning the past c. 4 Ma to identify the climate variability in SE Africa. Our results show that the elemental distribution in the Site U1478 cores is mainly controlled by the rate of terrigenous input and – to a lesser extent – by bottom-current transport and post-depositional processes such as propagation of paleoredox boundaries and diagenesis across some intervals. The log(Ti/Ca) ratio, which is used as a tracer of terrigenous sediment input, shows quasi-cyclical variability across the entire record that closely matches the periods of orbital parameters. However, the cyclical behaviour of the log(Ti/Ca) signal varies through time, with the uppermost 106 m of the sequence (0–1.07 Ma) displaying a mix of precession and obliquity signals, the intervals 106–223 m (1.07–2.80 Ma) and 240–257 m (3.68–4.05 Ma) being dominated by precession, and the interval 223–240 m (2.80–3.68 Ma) being controlled by eccentricity. To refine the available chronology for Site U1478, which is based on shipboard biostratigraphic and paleomagnetic data, we have tuned the log(Ti/Ca) record to the LR04 benthic oxygen isotope record, summer insolation at 25° S, and orbital eccentricity depending on the dominant cyclicities in the XRF dataset across individual time intervals. The resulting chronology enables us to evaluate the XRF data as well as the previously available shipboard sedimentological and geochemical datasets within a regional and global climatic context. This allows the connection of a c. 7-m-thick contourite deposit and a prominent paleoredox boundary to hydroclimate and ocean-circulation changes during the early Pleistocene and across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, respectively. Moreover, a decoupling of the log(Ti/Ca) and the log(Ti/K) records, with the latter indicating the degree of sediment weathering, from 3.2 to 2.8 Ma points to an increased delivery of highly weathered sediments to Site U1478. We attribute this to temporarily wetter and warmer conditions in the catchment of the Limpopo River and/or a change in the sediment source, perhaps associated with the tectonically driven enlargement of the Zambezi River catchment during the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene.

Pragmatic theories and computational models of reference must account for people's frequent use of redundant color adjectives (e.g., referring to a single triangle as "the blue triangle"). The standard pragmatic view holds that the informativity of a referential expression depends on pragmatic contrast: Color adjectives should be used to contrast competitors of the same kind to preempt an ambiguity (e.g., between several triangles of different colors), otherwise they are redundant. Here we propose an alternative to the standard view, the incremental efficiency hypothesis, according to which the efficiency of a referential expression must be calculated incrementally over the entire visual context. This is the first theoretical account of referential efficiency that is sensitive to the incrementality of language processing, making different cross-linguistic predictions depending on word order. Experiment 1 confirmed that English speakers produced more redundant color adjectives (e.g., "the blue triangle") than Spanish speakers (e.g., "el triangulo azul"), but both language groups used more redundant color adjectives in denser displays where it would be more efficient. In Experiments 2A and 2B, we used eye tracking to show that pragmatic contrast is not a processing constraint. Instead, incrementality and efficiency determine that English listeners establish color contrast across categories (BLUE SHAPES > TRIANGULAR ONE), whereas Spanish listeners establish color contrast within a category (TRIANGLES > BLUE ONE). Spanish listeners, however, reversed their visual search strategy when tested in English immediately after. Textbook Question Answering is a complex task in the intersection of Machine Comprehension and Visual Question Answering that requires reasoning with multimodal information from text and diagrams. For the first time, this paper taps on the potential of transformer language models and bottom-up and top-down attention to tackle the language and visual understanding challenges this task entails. Rather than training a language-visual transformer from scratch we rely on pre-trained transformers, fine-tuning and ensembling. We add bottom-up and top-down attention to identify regions of interest corresponding to diagram constituents and their relationships, improving the selection of relevant visual information for each question and answer options. Our system ISAAQ reports unprecedented success in all TQA question types, with accuracies of 81.36%, 71.11% and 55.12% on true/false, text-only and diagram multiple choice questions. ISAAQ also demonstrates its broad applicability, obtaining state-of-the-art results in other demanding datasets. Accepted for publication as a long paper in EMNLP2020

The resulting chronology enables us to evaluate the XRF data as well as the previously available shipboard sedimentological and geochemical datasets within a regional and global climatic context. This allows the connection of a c. 7-m-thick contourite deposit and a prominent paleoredox boundary to hydroclimate and ocean-circulation changes during the early Pleistocene and across the Mid-Pleistocene Transition, respectively. Moreover, a decoupling of the log(Ti/Ca) and the log(Ti/K) records, with the latter indicating the degree of sediment weathering, from 3.2 to 2.8 Ma points to an increased delivery of highly weathered sediments to Site U1478. We attribute this to temporarily wetter and warmer conditions in the catchment of the Limpopo River and/or a change in the sediment source, perhaps associated with the tectonically driven enlargement of the Zambezi River catchment during the late Pliocene/early Pleistocene.

Pragmatic theories and computational models of reference must account for people's frequent use of redundant color adjectives (e.g., referring to a single triangle as "the blue triangle"). The standard pragmatic view holds that the informativity of a referential expression depends on pragmatic contrast: Color adjectives should be used to contrast competitors of the same kind to preempt an ambiguity (e.g., between several triangles of different colors), otherwise they are redundant. Here we propose an alternative to the standard view, the incremental efficiency hypothesis, according to which the efficiency of a referential expression must be calculated incrementally over the entire visual context. This is the first theoretical account of referential efficiency that is sensitive to the incrementality of language processing, making different cross-linguistic predictions depending on word order. Experiment 1 confirmed that English speakers produced more redundant color adjectives (e.g., "the blue triangle") than Spanish speakers (e.g., "el triangulo azul"), but both language groups used more redundant color adjectives in denser displays where it would be more efficient. In Experiments 2A and 2B, we used eye tracking to show that pragmatic contrast is not a processing constraint. Instead, incrementality and efficiency determine that English listeners establish color contrast across categories (BLUE SHAPES > TRIANGULAR ONE), whereas Spanish listeners establish color contrast within a category (TRIANGLES > BLUE ONE). Spanish listeners, however, reversed their visual search strategy when tested in English immediately after. Textbook Question Answering is a complex task in the intersection of Machine Comprehension and Visual Question Answering that requires reasoning with multimodal information from text and diagrams. For the first time, this paper taps on the potential of transformer language models and bottom-up and top-down attention to tackle the language and visual understanding challenges this task entails. Rather than training a language-visual transformer from scratch we rely on pre-trained transformers, fine-tuning and ensembling. We add bottom-up and top-down attention to identify regions of interest corresponding to diagram constituents and their relationships, improving the selection of relevant visual information for each question and answer options. Our system ISAAQ reports unprecedented success in all TQA question types, with accuracies of 81.36%, 71.11% and 55.12% on true/false, text-only and diagram multiple choice questions. ISAAQ also demonstrates its broad applicability, obtaining state-of-the-art results in other demanding datasets. Accepted for publication as a long paper in EMNLP2020
