    Such techniques of Natural Language Processing as information extraction and semantic text labelling had been widely utilised in recruitment sphere to decrease the labour and time resources needed to analyse CVs or labour market’s trends. However, the application of such techniques and establishing link between demand for the workforce and education providing organizations is yet to be established. In the current thesis the ideas on processing educational courses descriptions texts is provided in attempt to facilitate the information exchange between the needs of the labour market and skills supply from the educational establishments. In the literature review the analysis of the most recent methods in natural language processing methods is provided (Word2Vec, NER, Sentence Transformers) as well as commentary on their current implementations in labour market related spheres. In the empirical section state-of-the-art SBERT language model is applied to the collected open university courses’ descriptions in order to extract concrete skills from the and then the performance of the SBERT model is accessed through such metrics as precision, recall and f-score, yielding the F-score of 70.4%. As a result, an example of comparison between the skills supplies as identified by Finnish open universities educational courses and demand as identified by the job descriptions data is provided. In conclusion, research paper’s possible managerial applications and theoretical contribution are included.

    Authors: Rolamo, Jani;

    This thesis examines Japanese castle reconstructions in the Heisei (1989–2019) and Reiwa eras (2019–) and links them to the ideas of cultural heritage and authenticity in traditional architecture. Japanese castles are opportune for examining the development of the role of architecture in cultural heritage throughout history. The role of castles as symbols of authority and later as symbols of local culture and history has changed according to the fluctuations of time and the needs of the contemporary people and thoughts. After majority of the feudal castles were demolished during Japan’s modernization, there have been three distinctive “booms” during which castles have been reconstructed. In the post-war era, dozens of ahistorical concrete replicas of castles were rebuilt concrete as local town symbols, and to many they symbolized the rebuilding of post-war Japan. From the early 1990s, however, a new castle boom has taken place, with the reconstructions emphasizing on using wood and historical evidence. Most notable of these reconstruction projects is the Nagoya Castle reconstruction project, in which the post-war concrete castle tower is to be demolished and rebuilt from wood using original methods and historical plans. This thesis examines these reconstructions in contemporary Japan, aiming to understand how authenticity and cultural heritage are related to this ongoing boom. In this study, a country-wide visitor survey on 10 Japanese castle sites was conducted, supported by two expert interviews from supervisors of two Heisei era castle reconstructions in Ōzu and Kakegawa cities. The findings supported the hypothesis, which suggested that the current appeal of castles is linked not only to their symbolic value to the castle towns, but also their value as objects of cultural heritage. This is why “authentic”, wooden reconstructions are preferred, which was evident from the visitor surveys, as all the respondents favored wooden reconstructions over concrete ones. Furthermore, majority of the respondents wished for more authentic castle reconstructions to be built.

    Authors: Ewe, Emmaline;

    This thesis focused on the subgenre of abstract expressionist moving image. The works of three contemporary moving image artists, Stan Brakhage, Pipilotti Rist and Bill Viola, were analysed to exemplify traits of abstract expressionist video art. Along with this study, a video installation titled Highway 88 was created. The study was conducted to explicate the context in which the moving image artwork was created. Data for this thesis were collected from a variety of relevant sources such as articles, books, videos, and interviews. Artworks for analysis were sourced from the artists’ own websites or YouTube for this study. The study explored and defined abstract expressionist moving image as an art style along with what artwork this genre constituted of. The study encouraged artists to experiment with an often overlooked genre by demystifying works in the field showing that abstract expressionist moving image works has its place in the context of fine art.

    Culture is a complex and multidimensional concept that has been studied extensively in various disciplines. The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage recognized the im-portance of intangible culture, defining the responsibilities of the State Members. In 2018, the UNESCO emphasizes the synergy between tourism and culture, and so understanding the intangible elements of culture is crucial for developing sustainable and responsible tourism practices while protecting cultural heritage. The tourism industry has shifted towards experience-based services and products. While understanding the relationship of culture with authenticity, tourism, and meaningful experiences, cultural tourism becomes arguably one of the most optimal tourism practices to develop to succeed, create a profitable business, and protect and safeguard intangible cultural heritage. The case which is analysed under the concept mentioned is the Finnish tango. Finnish tango is a distinct representation of Finnish culture that blends traditional Finnish practices with the emotional intensity of Argentine tango. The objective of this research was to identify what aspects of Finnish tango make it suit-able for further development as a cultural and tourism asset. First, a theoretical framework was studied, following with the implementation of qualitative case study approach, using in-depth interviews with Finnish tango experts and observations of the Finnish tango landscape in the present. Results were formed using thematic analysis, discovering several themes relating to stakeholder perspective of tango within the Finnish context. The conclusions arrived at are there is a reduced interest in Finnish tango in its current context. Strengths of Finish tango are in its historic societal importance, accessibility through its ease of learning and per-forming, the desire to dance with a partner, the physicality, and the intimacy derived from Finnish tango, the desire of stakeholders to collaborate and work within the community, and its strength as a tourism experience. Opportunities for development include the use of storytelling to market Finnish tango and its authenticity, the inclusion of Finnish tango in the UNESCO intangible heritage list, development of Finnish tango as a packaged experience similar to Argentinean tango, and the inclusion of Finnish tango in the public education system. There is also a need to acknowledge language barriers and the need for instruc-tion and marketing in English, as well as exporting Finnish tango as a tourism asset. These aspects provide context for further development and advocation of Finnish tango as an undiscovered tourism asset. The study has significant relevance for the field of cultural tourism, as it contributes to the understanding of Finnish tango as a potential tourism experience.

    Authors: Hauer, Katharina;

    Choice is an important factor in video games. Narrative driven games continuously offer choices to the player in different ways. Through narrative decisions, gameplay style and character creation players get encouraged to make an array of choices. These choices increase the replay value of games. This study aimed to deconstruct the structure of narrative driven games to properly examine how replay value can be increased by choice. Choices come in many forms; some offer more value to the player than others. Case studies of the three games: Detroit: Become Human (2018), Disco Elysium (2019) and Monster Prom (2018), examined how choice is implemented. A quantitative survey was conducted in Spring 2022 to research the likes and dislikes of players in a wide range of age groups. The survey provided valuable information on the importance of choice to the player, and discovered which types of choice are more popular. It also showcased the likelihood of replay value from the players depending on the choices available in a video game. Future research about replay value benefits companies and consumers alike. By adding replay value the consumer will be rewarded and the company can increase the satisfaction of its customers.

    The purpose of this study was to establish a foundational understanding and academic framework for utilizing art-making as a method of knowledge-making within an academic context. Specifically, a/r/tography, an arts-based research methodology, was identified as a viable tool for inquiring into complex subjects. Furthermore, arts-based research was recognized as an innovative research paradigm with profound implications for society, knowledge, art, and academia. Various of sources, primarily relevant peer-reviewed articles, books, and interviews, contributed to the data collection. In addition to these contemporary references, older sources dating back to the 1990s were incorporated for the historical context of arts-based research. This set of sources was employed to define, offer illustrative examples of, and present a practical framework for conducting arts-based research. As the practical and final part of this thesis, Mechanics of Consciousness, an original arts-based research project by the author, was presented. The collection of artworks featured in Mechanics of Consciousness was exhibited at Galleria Himmelblau during the 2022 Tampere University of Applied Sciences Fine Arts Degree Show Embers. As this is an aesthetic inquiry, the “result” of this thesis is the process of this thesis.

    Authors: Hotti, Helmiina;

    Diagrams are a mode of communication that offers challenges for its computational processing. The challenges arise from the multimodal nature of diagrams. This means that diagrams combine several types of expressive resources to achieve their communicative purposes, such as textual elements, connective elements such as arrows and lines, and illustrations. Humans interpret diagrams by judging how these different expressive resources work together to reach the communicative goals set for the diagram. In order to do that, humans make inferences of the diagram layout and the implicit relations that exist between different parts of the diagram. In order to build computational methods for diagram understanding, large amounts of data annotated with these implicit relations is required. Traditionally, these types of discourse structure annotations have been annotated by experts, due to the difficulty of the task and the requirement that the annotator is familiar with the theoretical framework used for describing discourse relations. The chosen theory for modeling discourse relations in diagrams is Rhetorical Structure Theory, originally developed for modeling textual coherence but applicable to multimodal data as well. This thesis explores the possibility to gather discourse relation annotations for multimodal diagram data with crowdsourcing; employing naive workers on crowdsourcing platforms to complete annotation tasks for a monetary reward. Adapting the task of discourse relation annotation to be feasible for naive workers has been proven challenging by past research concerned with only textual data, and the multimodality of the data adds to the complexity of the task. This thesis presents a novel method for gathering multimodal discourse relation annotations using crowdsourcing and methods of natural language processing. Two approaches are explored: adopting an insertive annotation task where the workers are asked to describe the relationship between two diagram elements in their own words and adopting a multiple-choice task, converting the formal definitions of Rhetorical Structure Theory to understandable phrases to annotate with. Natural language processing is used in the first approach to validate the language and structure of the crowdsourced descriptions. The results of the first approach highlight the difficulty of the task: the workers show tendencies of relying heavily on example descriptions shown in the task instructions and difficulty of grasping the differences of the more fine-grained relations. The multiple-choice approach seems more promising, with annotation agreement with expert annotators higher than in previous research concerned with discourse relations in textual data. The manual inspection of the annotated diagrams show that the disagreement of the crowdworkers and expert annotators is often justifiable; both annotations represent a valid interpretation of the discourse relation. This highlights one of the main challenges of the task, which is the ambiguity of some of the relations. Future work is encouraged to consider this by adopting an approach that is less concerned with a pre-defined set of relations and more interested in how the different discourse relations are actually perceived.

    Authors: Rolamo, Jani;

    Authors: Ewe, Emmaline;

    Authors: Carey, Jonathan;

    Authors: Hotti, Helmiina;
