Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.The Northern Ireland Social Attitudes (NISA) survey series began in 1989, and was conducted every year in which the British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey was fielded until 1996. Supported initially by the Nuffield Foundation, the Central Community Relations Unit (CCRU) and the Policy Planning Research Unit (PPRU - now the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency), the NISA series is currently funded by all of the main Northern Ireland Departments. NISA has not been conducted since 1996, but was replaced by the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey series (NILT), held at UKDA under SN:33312, which began in 1998, and its corresponding Young Life and Times Survey (YLT) series (held under GN:33313), which surveys young people aged 12-17 living in the households of adults interviewed for NILT. Like its companion survey, British Social Attitudes, NISA was designed to complement large-scale government surveys (such as the Continuous Household Survey and the Quarterly Labour Force Survey) which collect mainly factual and behavioural data. Its main purpose was to allow the monitoring of patterns of continuity and change, and the examination of the relative rates at which attitudes, in respect of a range of social issues, change over time. NISA thus allows direct comparison of the attitudes, values and beliefs held by UK citizens on either side of the Irish Sea. Data users should, however, note that the two sets of data cannot be combined to produce UK data. Main Topics: Alongside a `core' number of questions on (for example) public spending, welfare benefits, the labour market and community relations - and all the demographic and other classificatory variables - the NISA surveys also contained many of the questionnaire modules asked in that year's BSA survey, including questions (modules) on a range of social, economic, political and moral issues - some asked regularly, others less of ten. In addition, each year the NISA questionnaire included a special module of questions on topics close to the particular concerns of the province, such as constitutional arrangements, security measures, the perceived evenhandedness of institutions and community relations. Some of these questions were asked in Great Britain too, so allowing comparison of the attitudes of those living in Northern Ireland with the attitudes of people in Great Britain. See GN:33168 for the BSA surveys. The 1996 questionnaire covered health, housing, and political trust. The questionnaire also included the module on role of government devised by the International Social Survey Programme. Standard Measures The questionnaires contain three scales developed by researchers involved in the British Social Attitudes survey series and the British Election Study (BES) series. These are: `libertarian/authoritarian'; `left/right'; and `welfarist '. For details see the documentation. Multi-stage stratified random sample The sampling frame is the rating list. Geographical stratification (into three areas) followed by simple (ie unclustered) random sample of address, and random selection of one adult at each address. Face-to-face interview Self-completion Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) from 1993

    ERASMUS Intensive Programme. University of Salamanca. Our project offers an attractive proposal to study the built heritage and its preservation from different perspectives: Geological, Historical and Cultural points of view. Scientific specific tools give us a multidisciplinary background to transmit to our students the necessity to preserve our heritage within a sustainable perspective. If we know what we have and what it was, we will know how to work in its preservation. Academic staff from areas such as Geology, Engineering Geology, Informatics and History lead our program. The IP includes lectures, fieldwork and e-learning methodologies. The latter uses several forms of technology sustaining information yielding media, from virtual platforms to interactive technologies. The staff/student ratio is around 1/3. Several members of the teaching staff are involved into ERASMUS coordination programs, which facilitates the multilingual and multicultural experience. The ERASMUS IP programme intends to facilitate quantitatively and qualitatively the European mobility system. During these two weeks of IP we will aim to gain a major objective: to learn how to work as a group. Student teamwork is enhanced, both on-site and in a virtual base, once the course is finished and everybody is back at home. A memory of the course will be presented and several activities will be evaluated, individually and by groups, to get the course certificate. Another important objective of our IP is to make a reality out of the Lifelong Learning. We hope to get a link among students and professors during and after the course.

    Authors: Cassidy, Catherine Anne; Aitken, Jacquie; Oliver, Iain; Miller, Alan;

    A 3D model of a spindle whorl for spinning raw wool, made from a grey schist-like rock with central perforation used as a weight for a wooden drop spindle. The weight helped give the spindle momentum in the twisting, or spinning, of raw wool fibers into yarn, for later making into textiles. Dated 500BC-500AD. Physical object held at the Timespan Museum. Part of the Iron Age Kildonan reconstruction. A collaborative project between Open Virtual Worlds, a research team within the School of Computer Science, University of St Andrews and Timespan Museum. 3D digitisation was done by Catherine Cassidy and Iain Oliver with archaeological assistance provided by Jacquie Aitken. Digitisation funded by the EU Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme 2014-2020 through the “Connected Culture and Natural Heritage in a Northern Environment” (CINE) project.

    Authors: World Bank;

    In conformity with its objective of functioning as a local Government, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) sought the assistance of the World Bank for the preparation of a City Development Strategy (CDS) for Kathmandu. The various sectoral as well as integrated strategies presented in this document seem to be an overwhelming demand on KMC with its limited manpower and money. However, a CDS is essential if KMC is to focus its development potential. The optimism lies in political leadership, enabling environment and necessary support that will be rendered to KMC from civil society. The vision for Kathmandu stresses the need to develop the valley as administrative, cultural and tourism center. The strategy to move towards that vision through improvement in the overall situation of the KMC, however, is likely to be a long drawn struggle, yet achievable. The urban planning study strongly recommends that Kathmandu should be accorded special status as a capital city and large polluting and manufacturing industries should be discouraged immediately and if possible, re-location plans be drawn for existing industries in the near future. Alternatively, service and light industries should be promoted to replace the economic opportunities. Urban areas in KMC are not designated by a functional and occupational structure or contiguity criteria for managing housing and squatter settlements. Housing problems are a serious challenge in a situation where a historically planned city is fast transforming itself into a trade-cum-service center. On the other hand, it is encouraging to note that despite the absence of city specific policies and programs for housing, slums and squatters, the communities are highly organized and are gradually improving their conditions at their own costs, which show their potential for mobilization in participatory home improvement programs.

    Authors: Castells Puig, Gala; Klæbel, Birgitte; Šulskus, Mantautas; Hjorth, Liza;

    Through this paper, we examine the redesign process that the building of Nikolaj Church has gone through from the 1960ies, to how it appears today, as Nikolaj Kunsthal. The traces and layers have visible signs of a random design process through time. Nowadays the art centre aims for a coherent atmosphere and sense of place in an upcoming design process. Our analysis of textual data gathered from relevant documents and interviews with key stakeholders, relies on the development of a sociotechnical perspective. This perspective allows us to recognise the various agencies and networks in connection to the design process that emerge from the technical and social aspects, which are analysed. The findings emphasize the building as an actant and a network, that plays a crucial part in the design process.

    Authors: Cassidy, Catherine Anne; Aitken, Jacquie; Oliver, Iain; Miller, Alan;

    Authors: World Bank;

    Authors: Castells Puig, Gala; Klæbel, Birgitte; Šulskus, Mantautas; Hjorth, Liza;
