AbstractObjectivesThis study characterizes patterns of cranial trauma prevalence in a large sample of Upper Paleolithic (UP) fossil specimens (40,000–10,000 BP).Materials and MethodsOur sample comprised 234 individual crania (specimens), representing 1,285 cranial bones (skeletal elements), from 101 Eurasian UP sites. We used generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to assess trauma prevalence in relation to age‐at‐death, sex, anatomical distribution, and between pre‐ and post‐Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) samples, while accounting for skeletal preservation.ResultsModels predicted a mean cranial trauma prevalence of 0.07 (95% CI 0.003–0.19) at the level of skeletal elements, and of 0.26 (95% CI 0.08–0.48) at the level of specimens, each when 76–100% complete. Trauma prevalence increased with skeletal preservation. Across specimen and skeletal element datasets, trauma prevalence tended to be higher for males, and was consistently higher in the old age group. We found no time‐specific trauma prevalence patterns for the two sexes or age cohorts when comparing samples from before and after the LGM. Samples showed higher trauma prevalence in the vault than in the face, with vault remains being affected predominantly in males.DiscussionCranial trauma prevalence in UP humans falls within the variation described for Mesolithic and Neolithic samples. According to our current dataset, UP males and females were exposed to slightly different injury risks and trauma distributions, potentially due to different activities or behaviors, yet both sexes exhibit more trauma among the old. Environmental stressors associated with climatic changes of the LGM are not reflected in cranial trauma prevalence. To analyze trauma in incomplete skeletal remains we propose GLMMs as an informative alternative to crude frequency calculations.

Ocean-going ships were key to rising maritime economies of the Early Modern period, and understanding how they were built is critical to grasp the challenges faced by shipwrights and merchant seafarers. Shipwreck timbers hold material evidence of the dynamic interplay of wood supplies, craftmanship, and evolving ship designs that helped shape the Early Modern world. Here we present the results of dendroarchaeological research carried out on Batavia���s wreck timbers, currently on display at the Western Australian Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle. Built in Amsterdam in 1628 CE and wrecked on its maiden voyage in June 1629 CE in Western Australian waters, Batavia epitomises Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or VOC) shipbuilding. In the 17th century, the VOC grew to become the first multinational trading enterprise, prompting the rise of the stock market and modern capitalism. Oak (Quercus sp.) was the preferred material for shipbuilding in northern and western Europe, and maritime nations struggled to ensure sufficient supplies to meet their needs and sustain their ever-growing mercantile fleets and networks. Our research illustrates the compatibility of dendrochronological studies with musealisation of shipwreck assemblages, and the results demonstrate that the VOC successfully coped with timber shortages in the early 17th century through diversification of timber sources (mainly Baltic region, L��beck hinterland in northern Germany, and Lower Saxony in northwest Germany), allocation of sourcing regions to specific timber products (hull planks from the Baltic and L��beck, framing elements from Lower Saxony), and skillful woodworking craftmanship (sapwood was removed from all timber elements). These strategies, combined with an innovative hull design and the use of wind-powered sawmills, allowed the Dutch to produce unprecedented numbers of ocean-going ships for long-distance voyaging and interregional trade in Asia, proving key to their success in 17th-century world trade. In this endeavour data reuse is seen as a key indicator for a return on investment in research projects, data repositories and networking infrastructure. The impact of this expectation is increasingly felt also in the archaeological research and data management community. This contribution to the session will focus on what is known about the sharing, access to and reuse of archaeological data from the largest available surveys of the ARIADNE data infrastructure initiative. Surveys have been carried out in 2013 and 2019 with participation of researchers, directors of research organisations and project and repository data 422 managers. A survey in 2021 also specifically investigated how well archaeological repositories comply with the FAIR principles. From this rich record of surveys results concerning requirements for open and FAIR archaeological data and emerging practices will be presented, for example, identified patterns in researchers’ sharing and reuse of different data resources or what would help repositories most to support open data access and reuse (e.g., in terms of policies and standards). The presentation will provide insights into the landscape of archaeological data sharing and reuse as a background for examples of specific cases.

The reconstruction of land use practices in hyper-arid Saharan Africa is often hampered by the accuracy of the available tools and by unconscious biases that see these areas as marginal and inhospitable. Considered that this has been for a long time the living space of pastoral mobile communities, new research is showing that agriculture might have been more important in these areas than previously thought. In this paper, after a review of present-day land use strategies in Saharan Africa, we show how ethnographic and ethnoarchaeological data can offer us a different point of view and help in better defining land use and food production strategies in this area. Ultimately, these insights can be integrated into the ongoing efforts to reconstruct past land use globally. Within the scope of the Central Zagros Archaeological Project, excavations have been conducted at two Early Neolithic sites in the Kurdistan region of Iraq: Bestansur and Shimshara, as well as survey in the region of the Epipalaeolithic site of Zarzi since 2012. Bestansur represents an early stage in the transition to sedentary, agricultural life, where the inhabitants pursued a biodiverse strategy of hunting, gathering, herding and cultivating, maximising the new opportunities afforded by the warmer climate of the Early Holocene. They also constructed a substantial settlement of mudbrick, including a major building with a minimum of 78 human individuals buried under its floor in association with hundreds of beads. These buildings and human remains provide new insights into social relations, mortuary practices, demography, diet, health and disease during the early stages of sedentarisation. The material culture of Bestansur and Shimshara is rich in imported items such as obsidian, carnelian and sea-shells, indicating the extent to which Early Neolithic communities were networked across the Eastern Fertile Crescent and beyond along routes that later became the Silk Roads. This volume includes final reports by a large-scale interdisciplinary team on a wealth of new data from excavations at Bestansur and Shimshara, through application of state-of-the-art scientific techniques, integrated ecological and social approaches and sustainability studies. The net result is to re-emphasise the enormous significance of the Eastern Fertile Crescent in one of the most important episodes in human history: the Neolithic transition.

The emotional content of jingju (aka Beijing or Peking opera) arias is conveyed through pre-defined metrical patterns known as banshi, each of them associated with a specific expressive function. In this paper, we first report the work on a comprehensive corpus of jingju lyrics that we built, suitable for text mining and text analysis in a data-driven framework. Utilizing this corpus, we propose a novel approach to study the expressive functions of banshi by applying text analysis techniques on lyrics. First we apply topic modeling techniques to jingju lyrics text documents grouped at different levels according to the banshi they are associated with. We then experiment with several different document vector representations of lyrics in a series of document classification experiments. The topic modeling results showed that sentiment polarity (positive or negative) is better distinguished between different shengqiang-banshi (a more fine grained partition of banshi) than banshi alone, and we are able to achieve high accuracy scores in classifying lyrics documents into different banshi categories. We discuss the technical and musicological implications and possible future improvements. In other words, storytelling tools aim at giving space for diverse narratives to emerge and spread in the digital sphere. As facilitators of imagining and communicating ideas, they may also be considered incubators of rethinking societal challenges. The three storytelling tools developed in the framework of the HORIZON2020 SO-CLOSE project allow users to create and publish multimedia, multilingual and accessible digital cultural heritage projects. In this demonstration, we present the three tools: the interactive story map, the immersive web doc and the participatory virtual exhibition. We showcase the publishing interfaces (front-end), the authoring and content management system (back-end) and a use-case application (project). The present prototypes will be publicly released by the end of the project (December 2022). SO-CLOSE is a three-year project that aims at enhancing social cohesion through sharing the cultural heritage of forced migrations. Based on theories of cultural heritage-making, the project works towards exposing the commonalities of past and present experiences with the mediation of innovative digital tools and collaborative approaches. The act of storytelling becomes a premise for the potential of a better understanding between local communities and newcomers. In this context, the three tools are conceived and developed to empower cultural institutions and communities in building and publishing their digital stories. To achieve this, end-users were intensively involved in the design process, through participatory methodologies. Starting from a state-of-the-art tools analysis, the project collaborated with cultural institutions, NGOs, refugees and asylum seekers, local communities, researchers and policy makers in the requirements elicitation process (interviews and focus groups), co-design workshops and validation surveys. Overall, the users of the storytelling tools can create projects based on journeys, chapters or exhibitions, use modules that can be selected, shuffled and repeated, populate them with their own content – including 360 videos and images and 3D models – and carry out crowdsourcing calls. The projects are published online, with integrated features for accessibility, interactivity and data interoperability with other repositories. Stemming from digital religion scholarship, the research presented in this paper relate to a study of the philosophy and functioning of an innovative Catholic media enterprise called Christian Media Center (CMC). Based in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the CMC was established through the cooperation between the long-standing Franciscan Order and the technology-savvy Brazilian community of Canção Nova. Accordingly, this paper asks: which forms of interdenominational negotiation are involved in the functioning of the CMC? Drawing on interviews conducted during three years, this research will outline the process of internal negotiation required by the development of this Catholic new media project and propose possible directions for future research.

AbstractObjectivesThis study characterizes patterns of cranial trauma prevalence in a large sample of Upper Paleolithic (UP) fossil specimens (40,000–10,000 BP).Materials and MethodsOur sample comprised 234 individual crania (specimens), representing 1,285 cranial bones (skeletal elements), from 101 Eurasian UP sites. We used generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to assess trauma prevalence in relation to age‐at‐death, sex, anatomical distribution, and between pre‐ and post‐Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) samples, while accounting for skeletal preservation.ResultsModels predicted a mean cranial trauma prevalence of 0.07 (95% CI 0.003–0.19) at the level of skeletal elements, and of 0.26 (95% CI 0.08–0.48) at the level of specimens, each when 76–100% complete. Trauma prevalence increased with skeletal preservation. Across specimen and skeletal element datasets, trauma prevalence tended to be higher for males, and was consistently higher in the old age group. We found no time‐specific trauma prevalence patterns for the two sexes or age cohorts when comparing samples from before and after the LGM. Samples showed higher trauma prevalence in the vault than in the face, with vault remains being affected predominantly in males.DiscussionCranial trauma prevalence in UP humans falls within the variation described for Mesolithic and Neolithic samples. According to our current dataset, UP males and females were exposed to slightly different injury risks and trauma distributions, potentially due to different activities or behaviors, yet both sexes exhibit more trauma among the old. Environmental stressors associated with climatic changes of the LGM are not reflected in cranial trauma prevalence. To analyze trauma in incomplete skeletal remains we propose GLMMs as an informative alternative to crude frequency calculations.

Ocean-going ships were key to rising maritime economies of the Early Modern period, and understanding how they were built is critical to grasp the challenges faced by shipwrights and merchant seafarers. Shipwreck timbers hold material evidence of the dynamic interplay of wood supplies, craftmanship, and evolving ship designs that helped shape the Early Modern world. Here we present the results of dendroarchaeological research carried out on Batavia���s wreck timbers, currently on display at the Western Australian Shipwrecks Museum in Fremantle. Built in Amsterdam in 1628 CE and wrecked on its maiden voyage in June 1629 CE in Western Australian waters, Batavia epitomises Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, or VOC) shipbuilding. In the 17th century, the VOC grew to become the first multinational trading enterprise, prompting the rise of the stock market and modern capitalism. Oak (Quercus sp.) was the preferred material for shipbuilding in northern and western Europe, and maritime nations struggled to ensure sufficient supplies to meet their needs and sustain their ever-growing mercantile fleets and networks. Our research illustrates the compatibility of dendrochronological studies with musealisation of shipwreck assemblages, and the results demonstrate that the VOC successfully coped with timber shortages in the early 17th century through diversification of timber sources (mainly Baltic region, L��beck hinterland in northern Germany, and Lower Saxony in northwest Germany), allocation of sourcing regions to specific timber products (hull planks from the Baltic and L��beck, framing elements from Lower Saxony), and skillful woodworking craftmanship (sapwood was removed from all timber elements). These strategies, combined with an innovative hull design and the use of wind-powered sawmills, allowed the Dutch to produce unprecedented numbers of ocean-going ships for long-distance voyaging and interregional trade in Asia, proving key to their success in 17th-century world trade. In this endeavour data reuse is seen as a key indicator for a return on investment in research projects, data repositories and networking infrastructure. The impact of this expectation is increasingly felt also in the archaeological research and data management community. This contribution to the session will focus on what is known about the sharing, access to and reuse of archaeological data from the largest available surveys of the ARIADNE data infrastructure initiative. Surveys have been carried out in 2013 and 2019 with participation of researchers, directors of research organisations and project and repository data 422 managers. A survey in 2021 also specifically investigated how well archaeological repositories comply with the FAIR principles. From this rich record of surveys results concerning requirements for open and FAIR archaeological data and emerging practices will be presented, for example, identified patterns in researchers’ sharing and reuse of different data resources or what would help repositories most to support open data access and reuse (e.g., in terms of policies and standards). The presentation will provide insights into the landscape of archaeological data sharing and reuse as a background for examples of specific cases.

This white-paper expresses common requirements of Research Communities seeking to leverage Identity Federation for Authentication and Authorisation. Recommendations are made to Stakeholders to guide the future evolution of Federated Identity Management in a direction that better satisfies research use cases. The authors represent research communities, Research Services, Infrastructures, Identity Federations and Interfederations, with a joint motivation to ease collaboration for distributed researchers. The content has been edited collaboratively by the Federated Identity Management for Research (FIM4R) Community, with input sought at conferences and meetings in Europe, Asia and North America.

The reconstruction of land use practices in hyper-arid Saharan Africa is often hampered by the accuracy of the available tools and by unconscious biases that see these areas as marginal and inhospitable. Considered that this has been for a long time the living space of pastoral mobile communities, new research is showing that agriculture might have been more important in these areas than previously thought. In this paper, after a review of present-day land use strategies in Saharan Africa, we show how ethnographic and ethnoarchaeological data can offer us a different point of view and help in better defining land use and food production strategies in this area. Ultimately, these insights can be integrated into the ongoing efforts to reconstruct past land use globally. Within the scope of the Central Zagros Archaeological Project, excavations have been conducted at two Early Neolithic sites in the Kurdistan region of Iraq: Bestansur and Shimshara, as well as survey in the region of the Epipalaeolithic site of Zarzi since 2012. Bestansur represents an early stage in the transition to sedentary, agricultural life, where the inhabitants pursued a biodiverse strategy of hunting, gathering, herding and cultivating, maximising the new opportunities afforded by the warmer climate of the Early Holocene. They also constructed a substantial settlement of mudbrick, including a major building with a minimum of 78 human individuals buried under its floor in association with hundreds of beads. These buildings and human remains provide new insights into social relations, mortuary practices, demography, diet, health and disease during the early stages of sedentarisation. The material culture of Bestansur and Shimshara is rich in imported items such as obsidian, carnelian and sea-shells, indicating the extent to which Early Neolithic communities were networked across the Eastern Fertile Crescent and beyond along routes that later became the Silk Roads. This volume includes final reports by a large-scale interdisciplinary team on a wealth of new data from excavations at Bestansur and Shimshara, through application of state-of-the-art scientific techniques, integrated ecological and social approaches and sustainability studies. The net result is to re-emphasise the enormous significance of the Eastern Fertile Crescent in one of the most important episodes in human history: the Neolithic transition.

The emotional content of jingju (aka Beijing or Peking opera) arias is conveyed through pre-defined metrical patterns known as banshi, each of them associated with a specific expressive function. In this paper, we first report the work on a comprehensive corpus of jingju lyrics that we built, suitable for text mining and text analysis in a data-driven framework. Utilizing this corpus, we propose a novel approach to study the expressive functions of banshi by applying text analysis techniques on lyrics. First we apply topic modeling techniques to jingju lyrics text documents grouped at different levels according to the banshi they are associated with. We then experiment with several different document vector representations of lyrics in a series of document classification experiments. The topic modeling results showed that sentiment polarity (positive or negative) is better distinguished between different shengqiang-banshi (a more fine grained partition of banshi) than banshi alone, and we are able to achieve high accuracy scores in classifying lyrics documents into different banshi categories. We discuss the technical and musicological implications and possible future improvements. In other words, storytelling tools aim at giving space for diverse narratives to emerge and spread in the digital sphere. As facilitators of imagining and communicating ideas, they may also be considered incubators of rethinking societal challenges. The three storytelling tools developed in the framework of the HORIZON2020 SO-CLOSE project allow users to create and publish multimedia, multilingual and accessible digital cultural heritage projects. In this demonstration, we present the three tools: the interactive story map, the immersive web doc and the participatory virtual exhibition. We showcase the publishing interfaces (front-end), the authoring and content management system (back-end) and a use-case application (project). The present prototypes will be publicly released by the end of the project (December 2022). SO-CLOSE is a three-year project that aims at enhancing social cohesion through sharing the cultural heritage of forced migrations. Based on theories of cultural heritage-making, the project works towards exposing the commonalities of past and present experiences with the mediation of innovative digital tools and collaborative approaches. The act of storytelling becomes a premise for the potential of a better understanding between local communities and newcomers. In this context, the three tools are conceived and developed to empower cultural institutions and communities in building and publishing their digital stories. To achieve this, end-users were intensively involved in the design process, through participatory methodologies. Starting from a state-of-the-art tools analysis, the project collaborated with cultural institutions, NGOs, refugees and asylum seekers, local communities, researchers and policy makers in the requirements elicitation process (interviews and focus groups), co-design workshops and validation surveys. Overall, the users of the storytelling tools can create projects based on journeys, chapters or exhibitions, use modules that can be selected, shuffled and repeated, populate them with their own content – including 360 videos and images and 3D models – and carry out crowdsourcing calls. The projects are published online, with integrated features for accessibility, interactivity and data interoperability with other repositories. The use-case that will illustrate the tools application will be a pilot project of Greek Forum of Refugees, co-created together with three different refugee communities living in Greece and the Contemporary Social History Archives. posters & demos: 142

Stemming from digital religion scholarship, the research presented in this paper relate to a study of the philosophy and functioning of an innovative Catholic media enterprise called Christian Media Center (CMC). Based in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, the CMC was established through the cooperation between the long-standing Franciscan Order and the technology-savvy Brazilian community of Canção Nova. Accordingly, this paper asks: which forms of interdenominational negotiation are involved in the functioning of the CMC? Drawing on interviews conducted during three years, this research will outline the process of internal negotiation required by the development of this Catholic new media project and propose possible directions for future research.
